Essie: Resort 2012 Collection – first look! (swatches & review)

The four travel-themed shades of Essie’s 2012 Resort Collection are set to transport you to that perfect getaway, whether real or imagined! Covering every facet from dainty, bold, shimmery and deeply brooding, this collection offers something for everyone in formulas that continue Essie’s standout style.  All swatches are with Essie’s All In One Base Coat and No Chips Ahead Top Coat.

‘Pink-A-Boo’ is a sheer, medium thick viscosity cool-toned baby pink hue, absolutely brimming with iridescent shimmery flakes, almost like irregularly shaped glass scales, that give off subtle blue and purple flashes in direct sunlight. I applied three thin coats here and you can see that full opacity was not reached, but the coverage is still quite good.  For those wanting a daintier look, two coats would be perfect and while this lacquer is smooth to the touch when dry, some care needs to be taken during removal as the shimmer does spread a bit. Wonderful shine at the end.

‘She’s Picture Perfect’ is a gorgeous grey-toned lavender, made beautifully unique by its ultra-fine vivid purple shimmer deep within.  The formula was a touch thicker than ‘Pink-A-Boo’ and while the first coat did leave some patchiness behind, the second coat evened everything out just perfectly.  This shade has some chameleon-like qualities, as you’ll see from the following swatches, going from a delicate lilac in direct sun to a super vivid violet in deeper light – amazing! I applied three very thin coats for complete coverage – incredible gloss at the finish.

‘Sure Shot’ is a deeply shimmering, blue-leaning fuchsia with incredibly fine hot pink shimmer, in a simply excellent formula. Flowing at an even consistency and completely self-levelling, full coverage was reached by the second coat. For a shimmery shade, I was taken by surprise as how ultra glossy this shade is, and the many-faceted reflections given off when viewed in full sunlight – it almost seems to vibrate!

‘No More Film’ is a KNOCK-OUT!! A true deep indigo hue, this is so colour-saturated and highly pigmented, that you can basically get away with one coat (if applied thickly enough), although I did two here.  The formula, while a touch on the thick side, nevertheless flowed super easy, and not only was this totally self-levelling, but the exceptional gloss at the end completely blew me away. What I absolutely loved about this inky hue, was that the purple hue in the base prevents it from ever appearing too dark or navy, and its blue tone is always apparent no matter the light.  One warning: you absolutely need base coat for this shade, as there’s the potential for some light staining. Other than that, this was pure LOVE!

Final thoughts: I can’t say often enough how impressed I am with this brand; from the shade selection, to the formula – everything just works! What I really enjoyed was that this was a small collection, enough to satisfy the urges for something new yet never getting to that overwhelming stage.  Each of the shades speaks a unique colour song, although I must confess that ‘No More Film’ has captured me this time around.  Available this month wherever Essie products are sold, this ‘Resort Collection’ is one trip you don’t want to miss out on!

  1. Beautiful shades..sexy…alluring..very delightful…

  2. Are those you’re real nails?

  3. OMG! I WANT THEM ALL!

  4. In love with She’s Picture Perfect & No More Film ! Is S’sPP darker than To Buy ot Not to Buy from the Navigate Her collection ?

    • She’s Picture Perfect is significantly darker than To Buy or not to Buy, as well as having that ultrafine duochrome shimmer, versus opalescent ultrafine glitter. They are in no way alike, so don’t feel guilty at having both! :)

      • Haha ! :D Thanks… Well, I don’t know, actually, some people told me that To Buy or Not to Buy wasn’t very pretty with my skin tone. I love that kind of “pastel” shades though and I can’t resist to nail polish :)

      • Whoever told you that, is NOT you! My advice is for you to judge for yourself, after all, what’s important is that YOU like it! Nail polish should not only be about enhancing your look, but also about making you happy!

  5. [...] Check out swatches from Ommorphia Beauty Bar HERE. [...]

  6. I feel like we have seen Sure Shot and something close to She’s Picture Perfect from Essie before in the past. Surprised that the Resort collection should be out this month – it’s March! Typically where I live it’s not seen until June. But we are really slow to get everything. We just this past week got the Spring Essies (the nautical theme ones).

    • I know the feeling, when you’re convinced you’ve seen the colour before; ‘Sure Shot’ may remind you of either ‘Super Bossa Nova’ from Essie’s Summer 2011 collection, or ‘Tour De Finance’ from this year’s spring collection, but they’re actually quite different (and lighter in tone than ‘Sure Shot), but if you have either of those two, you could skip this one (Sure Shot). As to ‘She’s Picture Perfect’, some have likened it to ‘Playdate’ or ‘Lilacism’, but since I don’t have either one, I can’t say for sure. It seems unique to me in terms of the shimmer it holds and I don’t have anything like it in my stash.
I actually remember resort collections launching before the spring ones, but now…I’ve lost track, lol! Where are you located? Believe me, we can be pretty slow in receiving collections here in Montreal as well!

  8. Great pics and reviews! I really like no more film but I am worried that it will end up looking black like most of the other dark polishes I love. Do you think that’s the case? Would you say this is like Essie’s bobbing for bobbles? Thx!

    • Thank you so much – happy to hear to liked it all! ‘No More Film’, while it definitely appears darker in shaded light, you’d never mistake it for black, that’s for sure. It differs quite a bit from ‘Bobbing for Baubles’ in it’s very obvious cobalt/purple tones….very unique and not a duplicate. Hope this helps!

  9. Ohhhh that last polish color truly is a knockout! I got 2 of the colors from the Navigate Her collection and I was just SOOO disappointed by the formula. I’m glad these colors are better! I love the darkened navy though. So gorgeous. I see it in my head with a gold french tip omg it would be so pretty. Great swatches as usual <3

    • I’m so sorry to hear that the shades you picked up from the Navigate Her collection were duds; you could try exchanging them for other bottles to see if that makes a difference, or even try a different base/top coat – failing which, I can understand how frustrating it becomes when things don’t work out like we hoped. Glad you liked ‘No More Film’ and yes, it’s all that and more! Great idea about the gold french tip – very unique!

      • I’m going to reapply them someday and have more patience between layers :P They were gifted so I don’t want to ask the friend for a receipt to exchange them, and I don’t want to offend her or anything. They’re gorgeous in the bottle though :P (A-Crewed Interest and Ole Caliente)

      • I can totally understand not being comfortable enough to as for a receipt, however, if the product isn’t performing and you make it clear that your intent isn’t to return but to exchange, I’m hoping your friend can understand! But before you do anything, I think the best thing is to try them with various base and/or top coats, wait a little longer between coats, and then take it from there! Glad you’re not giving up on them! (I agree: A Crewed Interest and Olé Caliente look so amazing in the bottle!)

  10. Whoa I had no idea that She’s Picture Perfect had that shimmer! Amazing! And I agree – No More FIlm is a serious polish. It would make a great base for layering polishes like CND Effects, flakies, etc!

  11. Oh now these beauties are weakening my resolve. I find that Essie has been doing some great collections, don’t you?

    • Essie has been totally hitting it out of the ballpark with each successive collection, and these four beauties are no exception!

      • I have been dying to do a bit of nail art, but I’ve got to let my nails grow again. I think I was changing polish too much and it wasn’t good for my nails so I have to let them breath a bit. But I really like the pink shade, it has that sort of Tokyo kawaii look.

      • Letting your nails breathe every so often is an excellent idea; I haven’t worn polish on my toes for over a month now! The times I don’t have a pressing new collection or set of polishes that need swatching, I usually prefer to leave my nails bare, and moisturize them non-stop!

      • I think I am going to have to kick the pampering up a notch and rub my nails with some nail oils that I have. I am really bad at leaving my tootsies bare.

      • Slather, slather, slather…that’s the way to do it! The more moisture you provide, especially before going to bed, the healthier your nails will look & the faster they’ll recover!

      • I do, then I like to pop on gloves so I don’t get it all over the place. Only problem is I am a fussy sleeper. Can’t sleep with things bothering me. So in the middle of the night off pops the little white gloves. You see them all over the place.

  12. So excited at seeing these new shades. Really love Essie products, they last so well. Really liking the look of “she’s picture perfect” and “no more film”. Truly gorgeous!

    • I love Essie products as well – and have for many years now! There’s a good reason they have such a strong following: they know what they’re doing! So glad you liked this collection – they’re all amazing shades!

  13. Thank you for your swatches! I know which ones to get now! I love them all!

  14. I’m loving “She’s Picture Perfect”, I can never get enough mauve/lilac shades and if there’s shimmer, I’m won over!! Well, I guess it makes another line on my “post-no-buy” buying list!!
Thanks for the swatches, as usual, they are gorgeous!

    • Now I feel guilty….well, at least a little, lol! I’m glad you liked the swatches and for the mauve/lilac fans, ‘She’s Picture Perfect’ is so beautiful….when the light hits it and that shimmer peeks through, it’s a “wow” moment!

  15. She’s Picture Perfect is yummy, i will definitely be picking that one up! your photos are always so gorgeous, too! Ria :)

  16. Thank you for the swatches so I have decided sure shot, no more film, and she’s picture perfect will be mine.

    • I like a woman with such strong convictions! It’s nice when we can choose so easily, am I right?! I hate not knowing which direction to follow, no matter the circumstances, lol!

  17. The pinks don’t grab me at all but the other two – wow! Picture Perfect is too pretty, though it resembles some of the Zoya polishes that have been released this winter. And as for the final navy stunner – I wonder how that compares with Dior Blue Label? It seems darker and bluer somehow.

    • I know that pinks aren’t really your cup of tea – I figured the dark shade would catch your eye ;) It’s actually more purple-y/blue compared to Blue Label, which is significantly deeper. The closest I have is OPI’s Sapphires In The Snow, which I think I’ll be pulling out to swatch & compare, but other than that, it’s a very unique blue in my collection!

  18. She’s Picture Perfect is so gorgeous! I’ve just tried a few Essie’s recently and have had terrible trouble with application. Strange because everyone, like you, says it’s usually great. I love their colours though so I shall persevere! :) Secretly I also LOVE No More Film but I can’t keep buying navy polishes (even though they’re my favourites – especially such a beautifully pure colour!)

    • Actually, ‘No More Film’ is not navy at all, but a deep inky blue – like a true indigo, just in case you needed more convincing ;) As to your recent trouble with application, it could very well be the bottles you had (are they new? were they swaps and previously used?) as some duds will crop up, or you might want to look at changing your base/top coat – that might be the culprit. I sure hope this doesn’t turn you off from this brand, as it’s truly wonderful!

      • I’m actually thinking base coat may be the culprit.. Am definitely going to have a play with some different combos. And as for the convincing… You may have just succeeded. Thanks! :)

      • Lol…I’ve been told that I’m a shameless enabler! But seriously, try switching the base coat and see if it works better; if not, consider returning the bottle for a new one.

  19. They’re so gorgeous! She’s Picture Perfect is just…perfect! I want it!

  20. OK, wow, wow WOW!! I haven’t been able to see any good swatches of these anywhere, so first and foremost – thanks Eugenia :) Secondly, I am loving ‘She’s Picture Perfect’, it looks so unique!! And pale enough to perhaps work with my skintone :) Lastly – No More Film is what I wanted ‘Piu Mosso’ to be, in terms of it’s base shade. Not so dark that it almost looks black, because I really dislike that in polish; you’re right, this is an absolute STUNNER. A total must have in my books, I can’t wait to get my hands on it!!! ~rubs hands greedily~

    • Hahaha! I had a visual of you twirling an imaginary moustache! I received this collection before Christmas and have been patiently waiting to show it, as I love all four shades – somehow, I knew that ‘No More Film’ would grab your fancy! I look forward to seeing it on you!

  21. Super pretty collection! I actually think that I have a very similar polish to “She’s Picture Perfect”–I was browsing around Ulta last week intending to pick up some OPI Holland polishes that I didn’t order online and I saw some new Essence Color & Go polishes. One of the ones I got looks like a pretty good match to “She’s Picture Perfect”! I like “Pink-a-Boo”, too, although it does remind me of a lighter version of OPI “Pedal Faster Suzi” (my bottle is en route!). I never thought the day would come but I’ve finally gotten to the point where my stash is so extensive that I frequently already have a cousin to new polishes! I’ll need to see these in person to determine which ones to pick up–unfortunately Ulta takes FOREVER to put out new Essie, boo.

    • That is an issue with us polish fanatics, isn’t it? Frequently, even though we fall in love with a collection or a particular shade, we know in the back of our minds that we probably already own something similar – quite frustrating! That doesn’t seem to stop us from buying more, right? Lol!

      • ME? Buy a…DUPE? Or even a…CLOSE COUSIN? NEVER. Never I say. Has never happened. Nope.

      • Hahaha! It’s happened to me that I come home with a particular shade, only to find I have 5 more like it stashed away – I guess we’re attracted to particular colours! I hope you stay successfully AWAY from any potential duplicates!

  22. I love Essie more than any other brand so I´m not gonna be fair, but I love the 4 ! ‘Sure Shot” and ‘She’s Picture Perfect’ are completely muy style, the colors I ussually wear, but I got Mesmerize and this new indigo seems to have the same great formula, si I want it and the pink one looks very sheer but very bright indeed so I think it would be great for layering

    • Lol! I can fully understand why you love this brand…it’s one of my favourites too! Every single one of these shades was so easy to work with!

  23. Love them all! Do you think ‘Pink-A-Boo’ is close to Nicole’s ‘Kim-pletely In Love’? I love the way Essie releases a few smaller collections, spread out through the season!

    • Now that you mention it, they do seem similar – I’ll have to actually swatch them to compare and definitely let you know! Good eye, my friend! PS: having a tough time trying to leave comments on your blog – I don’t think it likes WordPress all that much! :(

      • Oh no! I wonder what is wrong with it? :( I always look forward to your comments!!

      • Check with blogger – I understand they changed several things lately. I miss being able to write too; it’s been hit or miss – either my comments are accepted or it outright refuses!

  24. They are all nice but Sure Shot is totally great !!!

  25. I like She’s Picture Perfect and No More Film best! Still I’m wondering if they’re close to any other polish as they look somehow familiar?! Great swatches!

    • Thanks Sabine – I love those as well. In answer to your question, I feel like they are rather similar to some shades as well; OPI has a couple that are good look-alikes for ‘She’s Picture Perfect’ (I haven’t gone through my entire stash to see which ones exactly) and the only one I can think of that may be close to ‘No More Film’ is ‘Sapphires In The Snow’ by OPI, but I’d have to actually swatch them to know for sure. Either way, the formula on these Essie’s was fabulous!

  26. I love the first two! The pink is a must have for me!!
How does the pink compares to the one from OPI Holland collection? (I think is pedal faster suzi..)?

    • ‘Pink-A-Boo’ is several degrees lighter than OPI’s ‘Pedal Faster Suzi’, and also applies a touch more sheer. The finish ie: the glass flecks, appear to be quite similar in both, but they do have enough differences that you don’t have to feel you’re doubling up on shades!

  27. She’s Picture Perfect and No More Film screams out must haves for me, thanks for swatching!
