OPI – New York City Ballet Softshades Collection (swatches & review)

What could be more fitting for spring, than these six new OPI SoftShades for 2012, inspired by the New York City Ballet? The performances, the music, the costumes, the pageantry … the sheer romanticism of it all lends itself so perfectly to these soft yet totally modern lacquers.

Founded in 1948 by legendary choreographer George Balanchine along with Lincoln Kirstein, the New York City Ballet grew from the amalgamation of various other troupes, and has gifted the world with talents such as Maria Tallchief, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Gelsey Kirkland to name but a few, with retired principal dancer Peter Martins now holding the position of Ballet Master in Chief. The NYCB still has the largest repertoire of any American ballet company to this day, staging more than 80 ballet performances throughout the year.

With the exception of the fantasy top coat of OPI’s New York City Ballet 2012 SoftShades collection, the other five shades have several common factors: delicately sheer pastel hues, they almost seem to be an echo of more vibrant shades – ethereal, yet substantial at the same time. The “sorbet” formula on the five flowed exceptionally well, levelling off absolutely smooth and leaving behind an ultra-glossy cushiony appearance. For such pale colours, I was pleasantly surprised that there was no patchiness and while even at 3 thin coats as I applied here, they still remain somewhat translucent, on shorter nails I can see them looking slightly more opaque. Note that for all swatches, top coat was only applied over the ‘Pirouette My Whistle’ combinations.

‘Don’t Touch My Tutu!’ is a cloud like off-white hue in a medium thick formula that managed to flow incredibly easily across the nails. This shade is a fabulous way to wear white without fear of looking chalky, so clean looking but never harsh.

‘Barre My Soul’ is a dusty pale beige hue with subtle warm pink undertones in the base, in a slightly thinner formula than the rest. This colour reminds me so completely of the look of well-worn and broken in ballet slippers, but in a gorgeously glossy format.

‘You Callin’ Me A Lyre?’ (…seriously?!) in the same hybrid jelly-crème formula as the rest, is a leotard pink yet muted delicate rose hue. It manages to look dainty and yet something about its mirror shine, gives it a thoroughly modern vibe.

‘Care To Danse?’ (*I somehow always pronounce this with an exaggerated French accent – don’t ask*) is a cool toned hue in a whisper-thin lavender shade. With its brilliant shine, the colour seems to be somewhat less prominent, but I love the milky appearance it lends the nails.

‘My Pointe Exactly’ is an absolutely gorgeous dusty slate shade, that makes me think of lustrous sea glass. This antiqued Wedgewood blue shade has a diffused look to it, as though its being viewed through a filter – so incredibly unique. For some reason, this is the only one of the five that needed a touch more wait time between coats in order to avoid any dragging.

‘Pirouette My Whistle’ is quite original in a world where we’ve seen every version of glitter layering lacquer; a significantly thicker formula than the other shades of this collection, this has a denser suspension-like format, yet applies with relative ease. Filled with ultra fine diamond-like silver glitter dust, this also holds sparse larger opalescent hexagonal glitter pieces that add a unique visual depth to its finish. As this does not finish as glossy as the others of this collection, it can definitely benefit from top coat to really bring out all its many facets. Bonus: smooth to the touch, even before top coat was added.

Final thoughts: Even though these shades may not be the wheel reinvented, I can’t help but love them just the same. With easy-flowing formulas and a gloss you can see your reflection in, their “sheer” (pun intended!) wearability makes them so incredibly versatile. Saturated hues have their place as well, but every so often it’s nice to take things down a notch with something more neutral, although I have to say that the unexpected hue of ‘My Pointe Exactly’ has definitely got my number! As far as fantasy top coats go, ‘Pirouette My Whistle’ adds a beautiful counterpoint to the ethereal hues of this collection, and in my eyes, so perfectly embodies everything “ballet”. Available starting early April, get ready let out your inner prima ballerina!

Pirouette My Whistle seems perfect to layer with those boring straight dark colours. I wonder if layering it over a black shade would emulate the look of Dior’s Black Sequins. I loved that one, but since my best friend also loved it and my mother shamelessly stole it when I wasn’t looking, we went through that one real quick. I lament the loss of great shades.
First of all, time for you to plan your revenge and “steal” your precious bottle back, lol!
Without even swatching, I can tell you that unfortunately, that combo will not even remotely come close to Black Sequins; the OPI top coat has large matte silver hex glitter pieces in it which would effectively ruin the more evenly spread out silver glitter of the the Dior. Sorry!
I swear I had answered this already. Maybe not.
Unfortunetly, my bottle is really over. My mother is very smart, she literally uses my stuff when I’m not looking and I’m not going to say no to aone time only, right? Mother and all that… She did it plenty of times though, so that with me and my friend, the bottle is over.
It is a pity that it won’t be a fit. I was thinking of fishing out the large hexagonal pieces, but I suppose it’s true the glitter isn’t fine enough. Do you have any recommendations on silver / gold micro glitter suspended on transparent coats?
All I can say is thank God my mom would never wear a shade like ‘Black Sequins’ – or we’d probably go to war over its theft, lol! It’s a shame that it’s not part of Dior’s permanent lineup, but they’ve brought it back once before – maybe they will again *fingers crossed*. If you’ve seen Dior’s new ‘Diva’ from their Holiday collection (you can check out my review on it), that might be an option for you. Illamasqua came out with ‘Creator’ (again, refer to my review for photos) that bears similarities – still available now, but as it’s a limited edition shade, it won’t be around forever. As to any other combos, I can’t think of any off the top of my head, but I’ll be sure to update you if I do!
Absolutely gorgeous swatches and beautiful collection. This is the first Spring collection that really calls me. So many of the lines look like I’ve seen the colors before or else they are somehow off. These are all stunning. I love Waterlily, and I’ve cherry picked a single polish from the different CG collections, but otherwise it has been underwhelming, until this collection. I grew up in New York and as a teenager used to get student discount tickets to the ballet and would go all the time. This collection captures both the color and the mood of the ballet. It feels clear and clean and fresh after all the murky colors, and brilliants. Thanks so much.
Thank you, Alison, for such an eloquent response! I’m so pleased to hear that these shades called to you and that you enjoyed the swatches! They are all lovely, and you’re 100% correct when you say that have captured the spirit of the ballet!

‘Care To Danse?’ looks really cute layered with ‘Pirouette My Whistle’. Does ‘Care To Danse?’ have a hint of pink in it?
Actually, ‘Care To Danse’ is more like a sheer cool-toned lavender, but with some definite pink undertones. Hope that helps!

You know I was waiting for this swatches! And of course, you did such a beautiful job!!!
I think i´ll buy the entire collection, because I just moved to NY and I love OPI´s soft shades, this collection was meant for me!! Do you think that some of them could compare to previous shades? Like Funny Bunny, Bubble Bath, Samoan Sand?
Thanks for the amazing swatches and the “aura” you create with your pictures
Awww…thanks for such kind words, Mara! Hope your move was an easy one and that you enjoy your new city! While I don’t own either Samoan Sand or Funny Bunny, I do have Bubble Bath and I can tell you that these new SoftShades have a more translucent, jelly-like finish to them, as opposed to crème. The closest would be a couple from last year’s SoftShades, as they carried the same finish. That being said, at least 2 of these new ones have not been done in this format before (the violet and the grey) and the top coat is quite unique for OPI as well. I understand that a mini set consisting of 3 shades + the glitter top coat will be available, so perhaps that might be of interest to you! So glad you enjoyed the review!
All of them are so delicate and milky looking!! super gorgeous + amazing swatches!
Thanks Eileen! They’re absolutely luscious!!!
Shades are gorgeous even if I’m not a big fans of the grey hue… And I’m very curious about your french accent ^^
Hahaha! Even though living in Québec I do speak (read, write) french, the accent I was referring to was more of the “Inspecteur Clouseau” type! Something about that title brought that to mind….don’t ask! Glad you liked the shades; I am a sucker for greys and I’m glad that this sheer version actually translated as well as it did (it could so easily have just looked “dirty”)
Yeah yeah yeah that is the one I was imaniging ! Bon, alors, si tu lis parfaitement le français, je vais pouvoir venir t’embêter par ici dans ma langue natale, ce sera plus simple à gérer pour moi…
Des bises de France !
Merci, mon amie! Giant hugs back!
Oh wow! Thank you so much for this review and the swatches of these colors. I have been searching every night for the past 2 weeks waiting for swatches to come out for this collection, I am a sucker for sheers and I love to layer them on! This collection is gorgeous, just as beautiful as I had expected
You’re welcome, Rebecca…glad I could help you wrap up your search, lol! They are all amazing and in my opinion, one of the most fabulous collection of sheers I’ve come across in a while!

These look so beautiful on your nails!
Thank you, Kara!
I’m not a fan of sheers, but these looks so pretty and feminine! And you’re right, ‘My Pointe’ is absolutely GORGEOUS. I might pick that one up out of this lineup. The rest it’s unlikely I’d wear, but I agree that sometimes it’s nice to go with a more neutral shade at times to get a breather from all the color
This week I did exactly that, and I actually couldn’t stop admiring my nails. A lovely post Eugenia, I just feel prettier after reading it!
Thanks so much, my friend! Thanks to my informed and diligent readers, I learned that a mini set (which will include the grey) will be released – along with the top coat; could be a good way for you to test these “sheer” waters, wouldn’t you agree? Glad you gave your nails a breather – we all need to re-energize every now & then! So, so pleased you liked the post!
Just out of curiosity: do you know what inspired the name “You Callin’ Me a Lyre?”? I don’t get this!
A “lyre” is an antique hand-held harp, and has long been associated with music & the arts; it has also figured quite often and prominently as a logo/symbol for various ballet companies!
Oh, I just did some research and the mini-set contains the lavender, the white, the grey and the glitter top-coat, those are my favourites!! It is certain now, I will cave in! Thank you again for those beautiful swatches and the accompanying photos
Fabulous! *clapping enthusiastically* You get to pick up your favourites without breaking the budget! Love it when that happens!!
I would have loved to take dance classes when I was young (my parents brought me to swimming lessonsl instead
), and I’m still fascinated by ballet (and love ballet music as Čajkovskij one). So I really enjoyed the pictures you choose for this post! On polishes, I think they look great on you (I love the glossy surface) but I know I won’t like them on me because of sheerness (I’m not a fan of VNL)!
Oh…poor you! My parents had me taking some classes in things I never really cared for either, so I can understand the frustration; that being said, it’s never too late to still indulge!
I’m glad you enjoyed the post and let me just say that even though these beauties are sheer, you won’t see any VNL on short nails so don’t use my longer nails as a gauge for that (maybe that might help you decide better!)
Sometimes I think about taking adult lesson just for fun but then I find some excuses (already busy week schedule, including kid swimming lessons
but my son loves them, I swear) and do nothing about it.
I wear medium lenght nails so nail line would be visible…But I read in a comment above that there will be a mini kit with top coat and a couple of shades I like, maybe I should give it a try (I’m a polishaholic, after all)…But I should find a way to whiten my tips first…I’m a fan of green and dark polishes and my nails are not as perfectly white as yours!
You have three young boys, right? I can only imagine how incredibly busy that must be…
Yeah, the collection should also include some minis which is a great way to try them out without investing too much, then you can take it from there!
As to whitening the tips, you could try rubbing your nail ends in fresh lemon wedges and there’s also hydrogen peroxide which could help – that’s what I did (as well as a few acetone baths!) after the “Louboutin” mani experiment!
Hiya Eugenia,
I so love your blog, I love how you really delve deep into your subject, with the back stories and gorgeous photos, it’s a huge visual treat! It definitely satisfies the sensualist in me, (I can’t believe I just wrote that, but I’m sure everyone gets that!). It’s just so appealing, on so many levels. Thank you!
Of course, I want the entire collection
Yours is my favorite nail/beauty blog, pure gorgeousness!
I thank you so much for your amazing words of praise! I guess I can’t hide the fact that I have a massive passion for all things beauty, and I really love adding some extra visual interest along with any swatches. As to your inner sensualist, I think it’s perfectly fitting that someone who appreciates beauty would wish to be described that way – long live hedonism, lol!! This collection, while neutral, manages to be something more…I love it all as well! Thanks for your support, Nancy – means a lot and I appreciate it!
The polishes are gorgeous .. But I can’t take my eyes off how perfect your nails are! Can you recommend any good oils, lotions, etc to achieving such healthy nails? Mine used to grow so fast and ever since holiday glitter phase they’re not looking as healthy!
Love your blog, by far my favorite!
Wow…thank you so much, Ashley! I can understand about how the glitter polishes may have taken their toll on your nails; all that work to get them off! As to what I recommend, first of all, I’m a huge believer in proper moisturizing and I always have a little tube of hand lotion with me wherever I go (for some time now, I’ve been loving L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream). Lush’s Lemony Flutter’ is very emollient and I find that it really keeps your cuticles in line, and as far as oils go, the 3 I have in rotation are OPI’s Avoplex Cuticle OIl To Go, Essie’s Smooth Trick Deep Conditioning Cuticle Oil, and Poshé’s AHA Cuticle Care). I may just prepare a post on this (with pics) to give a more in depth idea..hope this all helps! Thank you so much for supporting my blog – I appreciate it!
Very pretty, delicious shades! But the photos you added give me goosebumps! Majestic post <3
I thank you deeply, Adina….that’s quite the compliment coming from you! They are rather juicy looking shades, aren’t they?!!! xox
You have some of THE best blog posts I’ve ever seen, and this is no exception. Your words are very descriptive and well-written, and your pictures are phenomenal! I especially love the multiple pictures per swatch. You’ve definitely now got me wanting to buy this whole collection – you should work on commission!! ;o)
Awww….thank you so much for your kind words! I’m glad that you enjoy my posts and let me just say that I fell in love with this entire collection too!
*sigh* Dear Eugenia, you’re killing me!!! I’m on no buy (quite a necessity after after in love with The Legend entire collection instead of the three I had originally planned) and there you go showing beauties that make me want to reach immediately for my credit card!
I don’t know what it is with me and nude shades. I have tons, and yet I never seem to be able to resist… Anyway, from the first talks of this collection, I knew I would get it sooner or later, be it only for my sister-of-heart and flatmate who’s a former classic dancer (before she decided to go save lives by studying medicine) and an absolute nude-lover. Now I’ll have to see which shades come into the mini-set! (does it show I’m really trying to be sensible there???)
Thank you, Lélie! Personally, I never allowed nude shades to turn my head, having always been attracted to moodier hues, but I confess to having fallen hard for these! I even love the top coat, and I’m the world’s worst glitter fan! I hope for your sake, that a mini-set is released!
YOU SWATCHED THE BALLET COLLECTION! Thank you so so so much, you’ve just enticed me into wanting what I thought was going to be a boring collection haha. I think Barre My Soul, You Callin Me A Lyre, My Pointe Exactly & Pirouette My Whistle are ending up in my collection sooner rather than later (: I want to finish the cost equivalent of those shades in makeup/nail products I own, and then I’ll buy them. I’ve realized that that’ll be a good way from going broke rofl.
Thanks so much! I knew how much you were looking forward to seeing this collection, so I tried to accommodate!
Excellent plan you have; this way, you can anticipate your soon-to-be acquisitions, without feeling too guilty about it!
Yep! And honestly, at this point I think I have more polishes than most small salons >< Need to do a blog sale soon or something.
I can relate; it’s starting to get a little crowded here as well, lol! A blog sale for you is a good option…it’ll give you some “wiggle” room!
Hehe it will indeed. First I need to start posting on it regularly and attract some readership though!
Sounds like a plan!
Thanks for all the swatches. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but looks like the only one I’ll be needing is the glittery shade. I just can’t resist glitter!
Hahaha! Then you will absolutely adore playing with this one, Kitty!
I….I kind of like these. Sheers! I kind of like sheers! Take my temperature; I must be ill. Okay, I don’t really think I’m going to go in for sheers, although “My Pointe Exactly” is rather tempting, but I do think your swatches look quite chic. I CAN see myself going for “Pirouette My Whistle” (lolz…I also like your outrage at “You Callin’ Me A Lyre?”). Plus the NYC Ballet theme is so apropos to a soft shades collection.
On another note, I’m semi-comatose from my four course (belated) birthday dinner. Tuna sashimi, shrimp and crab bisque, lobster tail, and the best pecan pie I’ve ever had. Mmmmmmmm! And birthday cake is yet to come. To throw in some polish news, I chose Chanel Peridot for my birthday nails. I haven’t worn it since it was brand new last June/July and it is every bit as stunning now as it was then! It is absolutely one of my favorite polishes.
Julia! Happy (belated) Birthday to you…happy (belated) birthday to you…..HAPPY (belated) BIRTHDAY, dear Julia….Happy (belated) Birthday to youuuuuuuuu!!! So glad you actually *gasp* liked the swatches, and I totally agree about the perfect synergy between a softshades collection and the ballet. Your meal sounds absolutely scrumptious – have a slice of cake for me too! PS: Kudos on choosing such a fab shade for your birthday mani! Hugs!
Oh Eugenia I am in love! These shades are so romantic. I also think I was always going to have a place for these pretties in my stash as I originally trained to be a professional dancer before the old body decided to pack it in and I decided to do something a little more “serious” with myself. Thanks for this beautiful post and I’m glad to see a reference to Balanchine… One of my absolute favourite choreographers! I was pleasantly surprised by ‘Pirouette My Whistle’ as I don’t usually get so excited by glittery things but it’s so subtle and beautiful
Thanks, Anneke! I envy you your “balletic” training – what an experience that must have been! (….the “old body”, lol!); something about Balanchine has always seemed synonymous with the ballet classics to me. As far as “glitter” top coats go, ‘Pirouette My Whistle’ is unique as it’s so understated and will basically enhance everything it’s layered over – glad you liked it!
yes maybe I will rephrase… the young body that feels old when I get up and hobble my way to the bathroom each morning! lol
As to the envy of the training… well lets just say there is very much a love/hate relationship with it in that I miss it dreadfully but it really did ruin my body. All this talk of Balanchine has just made me want to go and find some old DVD’s and videos to watch! If you enjoy watching ballet/dance, you should have a look at some Jiri Kylián choreography with Nederlands Dans Theatre. NDT are amazing – it is perfect ballet technique but very quirky and modern. I was lucky enough to perform one of his works, ‘Un Ballo’, in my graduation performance… so beautiful.
Ahhhh….thank you so much for the info, Anneke – I’ll definitely be sure to check it out! The last live ballet performance I saw, was The Bolshoi performing Swan Lake (here in Montreal) and I was in my teens; the performance featured principal dancer Alexander Godunov – his last before defecting to the US (those were the days!). I remember it still….stay young, my friend and never stop dancing!
Gorgeous, gorgeous post and really beautiful swatches. You have done the impossible: I now want pale nail polish. My wallet is not amused.
Hahaha! That’s the problem with wallets; they have no sense of humour!!! Thanks for the words of praise and I’m glad to hear you’re now an equal-opportunity polish colour lover!
So, I seem to have a love/hate with the “Soft Shades” each year. Half of me is like, “they all look the same…”, while the other half of me is screaming in delight at these polishes that manage to make one’s nails look ‘done’ without being ‘overdone’. I am always a sucker for a sheer polish that allows some visible nail line while making the nail look refined and “clean” somehow. I probably won’t get the entire set, (although, once I see them in person, who knows how I will react!) but I think the must haves for me are the topcoat (how cool! reminds me of my Nubar White Polka Dot but with more shimmer), “You Calling Me A Lyre?”, and “My Pointe Exactly”. Very cool!
I’m like you: every time I see a new deeper shade, I start drooling; then I see something more understated like this, and I start drooling! Either way, I may need to start wearing a bib at all times, lol! I’m actually afraid to pull out last year’s SoftShades – I don’t want to see any duplicates, but I must say that this year’s crop is all pretty impressive. The top coat is really something special; I actually thought of you as I was swatching & wondered what you’d make of it!
I adore the way you’ve put together the ballet images with the swatch photos. I am really not a fan of sheer nude/pink polishes on myself, but this post makes me want to try this kind of elegant, refined look.
And your NAILS. How do you get them looking so perfect??
Thank you so much, Maggie! You’re right: it IS an elegant & refined look, isn’t it? As to my nails, let’s just say that I have good genes to thank and the fact that I totally baby them!!
Big SIs this is one of the most gorgeous posts I’ve ever seen! I love these delicate shades-they are right up my alley actually. I actually prefer lighter shades on my nails as my nail beds are so short. I’ll be picking up a couple of these.
Seeing these ballet shots makes me miss dancing! I used to Ukrainian dance in my younger days and there was some ballet we took too. Sigh. I miss dancing! And I miss wearing tights and leg warmers too!
Lil Sis, then these will be perfect on you…and the gloss? Seriously? You almost don’t need a top coat (but don’t skip it!). Ahhhhh….dancing….I miss my Greek dancing days too. I even mis wearing tights and leg warmers – thank you 80′s!! I wish you lived closer; we would SO be taking a few classes together (painting, flamenco, you name it!) So glad you liked the post!
Hook, line, and sinker! I am a total sucker for sheer whites and your pictures show exactly why. Just look at your nails, pure perfection. Funny Bunny has become harder to find, so I am happy OPI came out with these. I am a happy camper.
Wooooooie! Coming from you, that’s quite the compliment! Thanks, my friend! Yeah…you and your sheer whites; I never “got” it before now, but now I’m a convert! Go get’em, you happy camper, you!
Loved this post, Eugenia! Love all the ballet facts and pieces and photos intertwined with shots of lovely, delicate nail colors. I think this is one of those collections where I would simply choose the one color that I liked best, as they are so similar.
Thanks, Larie…I appreciate the love! And I think you’re right; there isn’t that much colour variation, at least not blatantly visible, so picking the one that calls to you the most makes sense!
Are these really “sorbets” again? I liked the Texas collection sorbets, and I love that first white shade you swatched.I love Pirouette My Whistle, what a lovely white glitter, although it won’t satisfy my lem for Lynnderella Love,Lace, and Lilacs.I could wear all of these alot too,Eugenia! Thanks for swatching them!
You’re very welcome, Thalie! Yes, the finish is that OPI “sorbet” look they introduced with the Texas collection, although I’m not sure if it’s simply a new name – they have that hybrid crème-jelly look to them! ‘Pirouette My Whistle” is really pretty and I love how the large pieces are almost in a satin finish…so different!
You know I usually don’t go crazy for sheers but oh my these are really really pretty
loooove! Fab swatches as always
Lol….Thanks Pam! I don’t usually go for “ladylike” either, but think how awesome these would look against a tougher look?!!
While I very much appreciate the cohesiveness of this collection (I’ve been really stymied lately by the haphazard collection choices of many major companies), I’m kinda underwhelmed by this. I just wish there was a little more oomph or depth to these colors, but I imagine that being a collection inspired by ballet, that was the point. While these aren’t necessarily my cup of tea, I think you did a lovely job swatching these. As a native New Yorker, I love the photos you decorated this post with. As usual, fabulous and informative post!
Thanks, Amanda! You’re right; this collection was meant to capture the essence and spirit that one associates with ballet! Like I said, barring a couple of exceptions, these may not be the most original hues, but I loved the formula! Thanks for the “New York” thumbs up!
Gorgeousness!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m determined to go to the ballet for my birthday this month and this post fuels that desire even more.
I love the sweet, milky shades and the delicacy perfectly conjures up tutus, ballet slippers and all those beautiful costumes. That shot of Wendy Whelan is stunning. Thanks for another lovely lovely post, E!
Awww…thanks, Liz and I really hope you do get to attend a performance (PS: when is your birthday?) As a girl (and before I knew that I’d never be as flexible as a rubber band), I wanted to be a ballerina so badly (next to being a mermaid, of course!) so I do the next best thing instead: watch their performances and read about them!
March 21. Officially spring but the weather is always awful!
A friend of mine took adult ballet classes as light exercise and loved it. Maybe you can try something similar?
Duly noted! (putting the date in my agenda as we speak!)…as to trying out a class, I’d love to – as long as I have 911 on speed dial first, lol!
