Butter London Spring/Summer 2012 Collection (swatches, comparisons & review) – Happy Easter!
Butter London (does’t that name simply just roll off the tongue so easily?!) has released five fresh, yet totally unique shades, just in time for the spring/summer season that is upon us. With provocative-sounding names to further sweeten the deal – half the fun is in figuring out what they all mean – these vibrant hues can be mixed & matched for some fabulous mani/pedi combinations … be ready for some major compliments! All swatches are with base and top coats.
‘Bossy Boots‘ [a derogatory name for someone who is pushy or bossy, usually reserved for children], is a medium-thick formula pale celadon green crème hue, with pistachio-yellow undertones in its base, that levelled off fairly well for a pastel but not without some work involved. Two coats can give decent coverage, but I applied 3 here for swatching purposes and to ensure that the surface was free of any patchiness. Beautiful high-gloss finish at the end.

Three of the lacquers in my collection that I felt would be closest to ‘Bossy Boots’, and how they compared:
- index finger – Illamasqua’s ‘Milf’ (previously reviewed here): 2 coats, similar viscosity but more minty green
- middle finger – ‘Bossy Boots’
- ring finger – Essie’s ‘Da Bush’ (previously reviewed here): 3 coats, thinnest formula and more grey leaning
- pinkie finger – Essie’s ‘Navigate Her’ (previously reviewed here): 3 coats, similar flow but yellower undertones

‘Trout Pout‘ [slang for a woman who has overdone collagen lip injections, lending her a somewhat fishy face], is a paradoxically vivid yet dusty-looking salmon crème hue with some coral hints in the base for added depth. The formula was simply spectacular, flowing easily, levelling off perfectly and leaving a gorgeous glossy finish behind. With 2 coats you can reach good coverage, but I applied 3 here for consistency in the swatches.

Looking through my collection, I was surprised to find that I only had one shade, Essie’s ‘Cute as a Button’ that came even remotely close to ‘Trout Pout’ – how they compared:
- middle & pinkie fingers – ‘Cute as a Button’: thinner, runnier formula almost jelly-like in consistency, colour more deeper pink based
- index & ring fingers – ‘Trout Pout’

‘Slapper‘ [Brit-speak for "slut"], is indescribably beautiful! A vivid teal/aqua crème-jelly hybrid that literally flows like silk across the nails, 2 coats would definitely give full coverage, but I prefer to apply 3 thin layers with this type of formula. Ultra glossy and levelling off perfectly smooth, this lacquer is THE epitome of a perfect summer shade. The most intense “Tiffany Blue” colour I’ve seen to date (and completely unique in my collection), this is nothing less than pure gorgeousness – LOVE!

‘Disco Biscuit‘ [a club term from the rave days of the early 90's for a tablet of ecstasy], has got to be one of the “happiest” lacquers I’ve ever come across! An über-vibrant fuchsia jelly hue filled with tiny prismatic glitter, the formula was a touch sheer, if somewhat gelatinous – needing at least 3 coats (as I applied here) to give a deeper opacity. While the shine at the end was fine, this shade definitely does not finish in a high gloss, and as the glitter seems to be suspended near the surface level, I recommend applying between 1-2 layers of top coat for a smooth surface. I absolutely love this colour; the vivid hue reminds me of the pink Popsicles of my youth, and the electric blue dots of light that come flashing from within its base, are totally mesmerizing!
NOTE: alternately, you can also apply ‘Disco Biscuit’ over a similarly hued crème base for a deeper tone.

‘Knackered‘ [to be tired or exhausted. "Wow, you look knackered - what did you get up to last night?"], is magical … it truly is! A chameleon-like shade, this is a sheer yet iridescent hue filled with ultra-fine polychromatic glitter that can flash either silver, turquoise, green or purple – depending on the light and your angle of view. For the following swatches I applied 3 coats, but I was surprised to find that good coverage was also achieved by the 2nd layer. As with ‘Disco Biscuit’, this varnish definitely benefits from at least 1-2 layers of top coat to really bring out all its intricate nuances.

Even though I already own a couple of shades similar to ‘Knackered’, I was surprised (and pleased!) to see how different they each were:
- index finger – OPI’s ‘Not Like the Movies’ (previously reviewed here): similar sheer formula but with a touch more heft to it, more green/grey leaning while its fine glitter is not prismatic
- middle & pinkie fingers – ‘Knackered’
- ring finger – Deborah Lippmann’s ‘Wicked Game’ (previously reviewed here): same sheerness, but more silvery/purple tinged, bearing no glitter and can be prone to some faint brush stroke marks

Lastly, I was curious to see how ‘Knackered’ would perform if layered over a black crème, and so reaching for my absolutely favourite ebony shade, a-england’s ‘Camelot’ (previously reviewed here), I began with 2 coats of this gorgeously luxurious glossy black, then added applied 2 coats of ‘Knackered’, topping it all off with a layer of base coat.
The verdict: Perfection! The deep black of ‘Camelot’ did everything right for ‘Knackered’, making all the colours that go into this unique duo chrome lacquer simply pop with a new dimension and vibrancy.

Final thoughts: There is not one shade from these five, that I wasn’t impressed with; ‘Bossy Boots’ can be a bit of trouble to apply, but its unique hue makes it worth the extra effort. I love the versatility of ‘Knackered’, and how you can opt to leave it sheer for just a light wash of colour, or deepened to a truly romatically gothic tone. ‘Disco Biscuit’ can perk up even the gloomiest of days, and as to ‘Trout Pout’ and ‘Slapper’? Well let’s just say that those two beauties will be getting plenty of attention from me this summer! Available the The Bay (Canada) and fine retailers across the US, please feel free to visit Butter London for more information – or to brush up on your Brit slang!

Happy Easter! (source) How awesome is it that these stunning eggs mirror the lacquers above?!

A polish similar to ‘knackered’ is essence’s ‘where is the party’.
lovely swatches, thanks!
Thanks you! Nice to know that there’s a less expensive option for those that are interested!
so pretty, trout pout, knackered and disco biscuits~ if only butter london were a bit more accessible, i’d buy them pronto!
They are pretty shades, I agree! There are several online e-tailers that perhaps can help with the availability, but you should also follow Butter London on facebook, as every so often they have sales that you could benefit from, be it a discount on the bottles or shipping discounts! Something to think about, at least!
thank you! will go stalk them now
LOL! These are all amazing! Love Butter London – love having fun with the names too!
Oh my….it seems aqua shades have taken a hold of me this season and won’t let go – I absolutely ADORE Slapper, and it looks fantastic on you (do I detect a bit of a tan going on with your skin – these polishes are looking extra-lovely!). I’m still not sure I can pull that kind of color off, but I’m going to make a valiant effort!! I’ve been eyeing Bossy Boots for months but haven’t made the plunge…I think I waited too long now and I’ll probably skip it, I’m into bright Summer shades now! Trout Pout is a lot prettier than I imagined it (it looked kind of granny-ish in other swatches – leave it to you to make it look stunning!), and Disco Biscuit IS super fun! The only shade I wouldn’t touch, ever, is Knackered – SO not my kind of shade, though you made it look better over black for sure. Thanks for doing these shades justice Eugenia! Great nail porn to come home to
Lol…thanks Toya and welcome back! I know what you mean about aqua shades — they definitely are my biggest weakness, especially as the weather starts to turn warmer! So glad you enjoyed the swatches and I had the same feeling about Trout Pout, until I saw it in person; then it was instant love! Doesn’t hurt that the formula is so phenomenal as well!
I’ve been curious about Trout Pout, you know I adore such colors. But sometimes I find them unflattering (love-hate relationship). And on some other sites they looked not too flattering on their respective swatcher (I think there should be such a title). However I feel I owe it to myself to do an in person viewing.
Also can you believe I do not own that sort of soft fatigue green? I have minty and bluish greens, but I feel that particular tone of green is missing. I’ve been looking at them a lot too lately. Now to find the right one. Which means, of course, that I will have to investigate Bossy Boots too. Plus I get to say Bossy Boots. It’s fun to say, Bossy Boots. See I did it again.
I was sure that Trout Pout would be your kind of shade, D….do give it a look-over in person – it’s worth it! And yes….saying “Bossy Boots” is rather addictive, isn’t it?! Lol! Going through a list of Butter London names is like a nail polish Rosetta Stone language learning cd!!!
I love Knackered! I thought it might be too close to NTLM or even Ascalon but it isn’t! It’ll have to be mine, mwa ha ha! xx
Lol….too funny, Cecilia! yes, by all means — go forth and snag this beauty!
WOW. That last mani was perfection!!!!! Ah this post also reminds me that I need more summer nail polishes. (I just got China Glaze Aquadelic
But I need paler polishes….excuses!)
Lol….thanks, Eileen! And for the record, a nail polish “connoisseur” never needs an excuse to pick up some seasonal shades!!! There — you’re absolved of any guilt!
Oh oh oh I own Knackered, it was gifted to me! I didn’t realize it was part of the Spring 2012 collection. Hehe, that’s kinda cool. It’s my first (and only) Butter London, and I love it a lot! I also thought it would be similar to the OPI Katy Perry shade but you’re right, Knackered is very unique. I’ve layered it over black if I wanted it intense, and then built it up on its own if I wanted it more sheer for a more delicate look. Either way, great post, and happy easter!
Thanks so much, Pryanka! What a nice surprise finding out that your one Butter London (here’s to more!) is also part of the new collection! It is a great shade, you’re right about that!
Happy Easter to you & yours as well…hope you had a fabulous day! Hugs!
I did in my own way
I got to show my little brother around the city – he was visiting me for the weekend! And I had great looking nails, so of course, all was well in the world!
Sounds wonderful! Glad you got to spend some time with your brother, and you obviously did it in such style!
You know it <3 I was just being Whimsical For Audrey, if you know what I mean
LOVE! I need Disco Biscuit both for it’s hilarious name and gorgeous uniqueness! Knackered is definitely on my list now too…I love it over black!!
What’s funny, is that as soon as I saw ‘Knackered’, I immediately thought to myself “this is something Maribeth would LOVE” — seriously! Would love to see your swatches, my friend! Hope you and your amazing family had a fabulous Easter! Hugs! xox
Happy Easter to you and your family
*hugs*
Thank you much, Amy! Wishing you and yours a Happy Easter as well! Hugs! xox
This is great! I wonder how Slapper compares to a-England Galahad or OPI Fly?
As I mentioned to another reader, the reason I didn’t add any comparisons to ‘Slapper’ is because I truly have nothing like it in my collection; you’d think that OPI’s ‘Fly’ would be almost identical, but it leans way more blue and ‘Galahad’ has a much more muted/dusty quality to it when placed next to ‘Slapper’…but good eye for you picking out those 2 shades (the same ones I thought of too!)
I’m ashamed to say that until I scrolled down this post I had forgotten that I purchased Knackered (embarrassing!). It got so many raves and I was in the mood to buy something one day so I bought it, tested it on one finger, and promptly forgot about it! Whoops hahaha. I really like it over black–if I ever get around to wearing it I think I’ll do that.
I really like Bossy Boots and Disco Biscuit; every time I pass the display at Ulta I am tempted. And this week they’re having a 20% off sale…although I’m trying to economize (hahahaha for the second time, I’m a terrible economizer) because I am going on a trip to visit my best friend on the 18th and I want to save my pennies. I like Trout Pout a lot too but my coral/salmon collection has exploded this Spring, quite unintentionally, so I don’t think I need yet another.
I’m late now, but I have an egg dyeing kit that includes GLITTER, so I’m very excited about that. And my mother made me the cutest Easter basket. What’s that you say? I’m an adult, you say? Humph, you’re never too old for glittery dyed Easter eggs and peeps!
Hahaha…Julia, you really kill me!!
How many times I’ve bought shades then promptly forgot about them….I don’t even want to go there! If you decide to give ‘Knackered’ another whirl, then you should definitely try it over a black crème…the results will astound you! Lucky you that has the option of benefitting from a 20% off sale (why can’t they have these sales here, I wonder?)…and even luckier that you get to go on a trip soon too!
And Julia? You’re so right; one is NEVER too old for dying eggs & peeps! Hope you and yours had a marvelous Easter! Hugs! xox
Oh, upon further inquiry the sale doesn’t extend to Butter London (darn restrictions!), so that helps with the economizing. I’ve been having a good laugh at myself all week for my polish denial because I’ve been doing nail wheel color comparisons. So, for example, I said to myself, “Oh, I’ll do green next, I don’t have THAT much green”. Then I proceeded to fill up an entire plastic shoebox with green polishes, and 4 green nail wheels later I’m still not done. And that doesn’t even include mint greens, which I regard as their own category!
Our Easter was wonderful! The weather here was beautiful and my mother made a dinner of lamb, grilled asparagus, orzo, mushrooms, and fresh strawberries. Everything delicious! I hope yours was lovely as well.
I can totally relate to the nail polish denial thing – I’ve fallen into that particular trap myself a few times, lol! Your Easter meal sounds amazing (and drool-worthy!) I will be celebrating next week, as the Greek Orthodox Easter is a week later this year – not so bad, as I get to buy a ton of chocolate on sale, lol! I do have to bolster my sanity & courage for the family get-together coming up – you don’t know crazy until you’ve been to a Greek Easter bash!!
Wow! These are amazing!
Slapper reminds me of OPI’s Fly from the Nicki Minaj collection.
They’re all beautiful! And I found a cheap dupe of Essie’s Navigate Her, a Sinful Colors for $1.99!
Lovely swatches & descriptions as always!
Thank you, Katelyn! I was thinking the same thing about ‘Slapper’, but the reason I didn’t show a comparison is because the two are really quite different; I wish my camera could capture the true vividness of ‘Slapper’ — it’s amazing! Great score on your part, finding a dupe for $1.99…love getting a deal, lol!
Beautiful swatches! And thanks for taking the extra work of making comparisons… I wanted to see how Bossy Boots compared to Navigate Her, which I already have, and I like BB more!! Boooo
I have Trout Pout and it really surprised me how bright and almost neon it dries. In the bottle it looks lighter and softer. I have to be brave and wear it now!!
And Slapper, you know me and my new acque blue obsession! i’ll wait to see your comparison with Dior St Tropez! But I can feel the start of a lemming… And i have a store that sell the collection 5 minutes from home… I have to be strong lol I bought way too many polishes lately!
Happy Easter! I hope you have a great day with your family
Thank you, Mara! ‘Trout Pout’ is a strange animal; looks so vibrant and yet, I also find it has a muted tone to it – so weird & hard to capture in words! I can tell you right now, and this without having laid eyes on St. Tropez yet, that ‘Slapper’ is so vibrant that it almost borders on electric! I’m fairly certain that there will be absolutely NO comparison to the Dior. I’m glad to hear that you now have easy access to Butter London lacquers (not so good for the wallet, though!)
Happy Easter to you and your lovely family as well! Hugs! xox
Oh wow, those look amazing!
And I really like your reviews and recommendations regarding the formulas!
Thanks so much!
You’re very welcome, Jin…glad you enjoyed them!
Bossy Boots is my favorite! I’ve been really wanting a pistachio shade lately. It’s on my wishlist
I also love the name, haha.
Lol…somehow, I don’t believe that that moniker ever applied to you, though! I would have sworn that I had at least 3 other similar shades, but nope – it’s an original, that’s for sure!
Another stellar post! Love how you do comparisons of lighting and with other brands. Makes my decisions clear and easy. Have been searching around for some comparisons between Knackered and Not Like The Movies and this is just great! I’ve always assumed they were very similar.
To layer Knackered over black is amazing. That could probably change my mind about not getting any from this collection!
Happy Easter, babe!
Thank you so very much for your lovely words *blushing*! I’m happy to be able to provide some direction and you’re so right about how Knackered looks over black – blew me away, I tell you! Happy, happy Easter to you & yours as well! hugs! xox
I used to be a big fan of silvers in high school, and for some reason I drifted away from them, into darker shades, usually of blue or green. But lately, I’ve been looking at silvers again, and I think Knackered is beautiful–my favorite of this line!
what’s so nice about this shade, is that it refuses to be pinned down; no matter which way you look at it, it’s colour doesn’t stand still, but that silvery gleam is always present just the same! Good choice!
