CHANEL: Soleil Tan de CHANEL Bronzing Makeup Base (swatches & review)
For the longest time, I stupidly resisted bronzers; blame the images of my youth, where women sported unflattering splotches of orange across their face and thought themselves “believably” bronzed – SO not a good look. Then a couple of years ago, something happened: I fell in love with the packaging of a cream bronzer – not even the product itself, mind you – and since that time, not only have I never looked back, but my collection now borders on obsession. About that same time, I began hearing such raves about ‘Soleil Tan de CHANEL’, that I finally had to see for myself what the fuss was all about. Holy Hot Tanned Tamale … this has got to be “the one to rule them all” … !
‘Soleil Tan de CHANEL Bronzing Makeup Base’ is an incredibly flattering bronzer that comes in a velvety smooth crème-gel formula, that literally seems to glide effortlessly on application, to melt seamlessly into your skin. This is a truly universal shade indeed - appearing neither too orange, red, or yellow, but a perfect amalgamation of hues that will suit practically every skin tone across the spectrum.
The plastic jar, which happens to be semi-transparent on the bottom, holds a generous amount of product (30 g/1 oz) and even if you were to apply it daily, it should still last quite a long time. Upon opening the jar, you’re presented with what looks like a swirled & whipped milk chocolate mousse, but upon application, you immediately notice its softly sleek texture and its delicate vanilla-rose scent, which quickly dissipates upon using. I’m not really a fan of shimmery type bronzers, and the matte versions I’ve seen have a tendency to look rather flat and one-dimensional; ‘Soleil Tan de CHANEL’, does not have any noticeable shimmer to it, although it manages to impart a gorgeously subtle glow nonetheless.
I was told that a foundation brush is best for application, but after playing with this product, I’ve noticed great results with several other tools: a cosmetic sponge, a paddle-style foundation brush, a stippling brush, a densely compact blush-style brush, as well as my fingers. The texture lends itself well to be laid down across the skin as the merest whisper, or easily built up for more coverage and impact. I love using this as a contouring medium as well, since the texture feels so light and when worn under a more translucent foundation/tinted moisturizer, you would not believe the healthy flush of colour it gives the skin – simply gorgeous!

Final thoughts: Picking up ‘Soleil Tan de CHANEL’ ranks as one of my better investments, not only for how much product you actually receive, but more for its stellar quality. On those days when I’m not up to heavy makeup, a few simple well-blended swipes of this bronzer, some mascara and a quick shot of gloss, are all that I need to get by and still look well-put together. The best part, is that this product is part of CHANEL’s permanent lineup and definitely not in any danger of being pulled from the shelves anytime soon – I really dislike seeing the words “limited edition”, especially when an item turns out to be THIS amazing. At CDN $51.00/US $48.00, I would have to say that this is a relative bargain as far as a CHANEL beauty product is concerned – now that the weather has warmed up, it pretty much guarantees that I’ll be turning to this beauty staple again and again!

Great review!I want to buy it for soooo long but it seems that every store here in greece is out of stock for this one.I’ve even heard from one s.a. that is about to be removed from the permanent line.
I used to think that it was a European exclusive and had been planning on asking my cousins in Greece to send it to me, lol! Imagine my surprise when I asked at my local CHANEL counter here, and found out that it was available here as well as permanent! I don’t think that the brand will be removing this any time soon, as it’s a staple for consumers and professionals alike!
of cource I didn’t believe her,I thought she was inventing excuses…well thank god you didn’t ask them,it’s nowhere to be found here!I’ve been searching it for so long!
Yea, um…I have to concur that this looks SMASHING!! I really want to check this out, it just looks so creamy and lovely, and the shade looks like the *perfect* bronze shade. Oh dear…THANK you Eugenia, but also – gulp!
Hahaha! Larie said that she wants to “poke” it, lol! If you get a chance, do check it out and let me know what you think!
You know, I keep picking this up and putting it down every time I’m at the Chanel counter. I admit a lot of my fascination stems from the obsession the Pixiwoo sisters seem to have with it, but when I swatch it, it seems like it’s going to be to warm. One of these days I’m going to have to try an application and commit either way.
Thank you for your thorough and beautiful post! You raise the bar, my friend. =)
Hahaha….the “Pixiwoo Obsession” is something I noticed as well, but I’ve been hearing great things about this product for years; I was on the fence about it just like you find yourself, but since I picked it up, I have to say that I’ve used it almost daily – it even played a pivotal role in the makeup look I gave myself this past weekend at my nephew’s wedding!
Thanks for the kind words, Maggie – what a truly nice thing to say! Hugs!!
That finish is so pretty – a wee bit too expensive for me, but a girl can dream
Glad you liked it, Sarah! A girl most certainly can dream….and sometimes those dreams even turn to reality! Here’s to positive thinking!
Omg… INSTANT LOVE!! i don’t have anything more to say haha
Hahaha! You’re so funny, Mara! I’ve been using this daily since I picked it up — it’s even fabulous for layering under a powder bronzer – really make it last all day!
Haha, I want to poke it, too. Heck, my fingers feel itchy just looking at it!
Is it just me or are Canadian Chanel prices not as inflated as other brands? Just another reason to shop more Chanel, it seems!
Lol….Can you imagine a huge vat of it that we can poke?! You’re 100%; Canadian CHANEL prices are only a couple of dollars different at best, from the US counterparts — now if only our taxes were equally low……sigh…
Thank you Eugenia for your high quality photos and in depth descriptions of Chanel products. It’s so helpful to be informed before I make a high end purchase. There is no Chanel counter close to my home, a blessing in disguise
, so my purchases are done online. Your website provides me with an invaluable service.
:-)
Apart from that, it’s so fun to read and your sweet personality shines through. I alwats feel a little thrill of anticipation when I’m opening your website every day,,,,,what does Eugenia have for us today? It really makes me happy!
Thank you!
Nancy
First of all, I want to begin by telling you that reading your lovely comment, totally made my day – thank YOU, Nancy! It really makes me happy if a review I’ve done can benefit someone in any way; it’s what I look for as well when I read other blogs. I had to laugh at your “blessing in disguise” line — how true that probably is! If you can appreciate CHANEL products the way it sounds like you do, then maybe it’s safer for your wallet to have some distance, lol! It doesn’t hurt to be picky when purchasing high end products, especially in today’s economic climate — this way you not only get the thrill of ownership, but the satisfaction of truly enjoying what it is you finally decide on. Thanks once more for reading and being a part of this journey with me! Hugs!
nice!
Thanks! Glad you like it!
Thanks for reviewing this. We’re on the same wave length it seems; you always review things I’m curious about when I’m curious about it
Great reviews and photos.
How eerie is that? But how cool that I could help out that way too!
Glad you enjoyed the review and thanks for the kind words, Naz!
Hey Big Sis! Gorgeous photos! I used to love this and used it all the time. But you know what? It broke me out. Every single time. And I couldn’t figure it out at first, but once I stopped using it I don’t get under my chin and jawline breakouts. So, yeah, not for me. But I did love the bronze glow it gave!
Wow…that’s such a shame, Lil Sis, but I’m glad you were able to figure out the culprit and fix the problem – I’m guessing it’s the parabens that must have done it. Anyway, there are plenty of other options out there for us bronzer lovers, right?!
I love the packaging of this! It looks delicious in the pot
Each year, I slowly become more comfortable with bronzing products. This looks creamy and very wearable!
It does look tasty, doesn’t it?! We’re alike in that respect, Maribeth — it took me a while to understand what the fuss was about bronzers, but now that I have, I absolutely love them! And the variety we have to choose from these days….heaven!
Hi Eugenia!
It’s India ! I recieved my Chanel Sable Beige Bronzer, and my eye duo. I’m very happy with both. I was wondering what other bronzer you would advise me to try, the Chanel Soleil Tan Bronzing Make-up Base, Guerlain Teracotta or a Dior bronzer ? xxx
Hi India – thanks for letting me know, and I’m so glad that they didn’t disappoint! Now that I’ve gotten into bronzers – with a vengeance – I like having an assortment, sometimes I mix & match as well. The CHANEL Soleil Tan Bronzer is excellent for a low-fuss look & can easily be fused with other cream/liquid products for a seamless natural look. Powders are fabulous for a light dusting, and even some with shimmer can add visual interest – as long as it’s done with a light hand. That being said, I have had good results with this CHANEL (as well as the Sable Beige that you picked up), and as to Guerlain, I’ve only recently started investing in their products and have yet to gain experience with them, but they are well-known for the quality of their powdered bronzers. The new Dior lineup of bronzers is also worth a look at the counter – in other words, maybe it would be best for you to narrow down what you’re really looking for, then take a trip to the cosmetics counters and test-drive a few to see what grabs you! Remember to swatch them, then walk away for a good 30 minutes to see how they react with your skin!
Thank you for posting the ingredients, Eugenia! I love your photos of this – it looks so smooth and new and I just want to poke it! Hahaha. The finish looks really lovely, as well.
Hahaha! Yes…let’s poke! I almost hate ruining a product when it looks so yummy upon opening, but then…what the hey! I love the finish – way more natural and realistic than a powder bronzer can ever hope to be!
