China Glaze ‘Summer Neons’ Collection – part 1 (swatches & review)
For a self-professed “neon-avoider”, it may seem a little odd that not only is this my second collection of these über-bright hues, but that I’m actually really enjoying the jolt of colour that they provide. What sets China Glaze’s new ‘Summer Neons’ Collection apart from everything else out there, is that these attention-grabbing colours come with a nice surprise: shimmer! It’s like a 2-for-1!
Part 1 of this 12-piece collection of lacquers, focuses primarily on the more obvious “neon” shades of the group along with the pinks, and some of the characteristics they all have in common, namely:
- a medium-thick formula
- a brushstroke-free and self-levelling application
- ultra-fine shimmer
- a semi-matte/satin finish
- 2 coats for each shade for opaque coverage
The following swatches are all with Poshé Fast Drying Basecoat and Super-Fast Drying Topcoat – as stated, the final look is rather satiny/semi-matte; unless you prefer that finish, I recommend ending with a nice glossy top coat, as that really brings out every ounce of visual interest of each shade.
‘Sun-Kissed’ is a retina-searing “highlighter” yellow hue, infused with an ultra-fine pearly shimmer that’s a nice way of modernizing such a vivid neon shade. The formula was the thickest of the 6 here, although it still applied easily enough.

‘I’m with the Lifeguard’ is almost radio-active; a neon green so vibrant that you’d swear it glows in the dark, there’s almost a cartoonish “toxic-waste” eerie look to this hue, but it’s surprisingly flattering to wear. Bearing a slightly similar formula to ‘Sun-Kissed’, this shade nonetheless applied very well just the same and I absolutely loved the ribbons of pearly shimmer visible in both the bottle and on the nail.

‘Surfin’ for Boys’ is a high-octane pink filled with that same crushed pearly luminosity, and bears an excellently-flowing formula. While the shimmer is not as clearly visible with this shade as with the previous two, the coral flash you see along the nail edges more than makes up for that. There also seems to be an inner blue flame that becomes apparent in certain lights, adding a beautiful depth and overall tone to this unique colour. LOVE!

‘Orange You Hot?’, is a high-voltage orange which still manages to somehow appear rather dusty-looking. Like a sophisticated take on that well-known colour of our childhood, “school-bus orange”, the shimmery pearly strands in the base give this citrusy hue a nice depth and dimension. An interesting and lighter version of the colour of the year, ‘Tangerine Tango’.

‘Flirty Tankini’ has a secret; a more toned-down version of ‘Surfin’ for Boys’, the formula on this hot pink shade seemed to be more of a hybrid as it felt almost jelly-like. With an excellent flow, the pearl shimmer appears much less apparent to the naked eye, although the pale violet flash that shows up at certain angles and which compliments the light peachy/coral undertones, makes for a nice touch.

‘Pink Plumeria’ (love that name!) is a highly vibrant & saturated doll-pink hue, filled with an ultra-fine golden shimmer. The formula was unexpected as well; flowing with the consistency of raw egg white (sorry – I call ‘em as I see ‘em!), I did not expect the ease with which it applied. While it can appear as a less intense version of ‘Flirty Tankini’, the gold shimmer takes this hue in a completely new direction and can make it look at times rather warm leaning (think: flamingo pink), or cooler-toned (as in pink lemonade). A grown-up, beautiful & unique summery pink hue!

Final thoughts: I’ve documented in my numerous China Glaze posts, what a total fan I am of this brand; the permanent colour range is vast, the seasonal collections that are released offer totally wearable shades, with colours that generally meet everyone’s tastes, the formula is for the most part absolutely stellar and the best part? The price point is almost ridiculously low in comparison to all that you’re getting. This first half of the ‘Summer Neons’ Collection took me by surprise; I may have groaned upon viewing the lacquers, but that quickly faded when I actually began swatching – then couldn’t stop staring and taking photos! Even if you don’t manage to squeeze in any beach time, something tells me that a quick swipe of one of these happy hues can almost transport you there … I said “almost” !
Available now at all locations where China Glaze products are sold, feel free to visit the company’s website for further information and/or to view their entire lineup, and you could also follow them on twitter or their facebook page.

Pink Plumeria is probably one of my very favorite pinks right now. It’s looks like a fruity drink you’d have at the beach and looks amazing with a tan. I’m pretty impressed with the collection as a whole though, since China Glaze managed to make neons look new and interesting.
That’s exactly it: they managed to infuse neons with something fresh & vibrant — a whole new take on this genre, that’s for darn sure! And let’s not forget the fab pricing!!
I am loving’ Surfing For Boys! But I have a couple of favs in this collection.
I’m actually having a hard time choosing one favourite out of them all, but ‘Surfin’ for Boys’ is one of the first to catch my eye as well!
I have been methodically going through the shades since doing my swatchapalooza, and some of my opinions have changed on a few – on the whole I’m liking the collection (some shades I absolutely LOVE), though there are still some residual issues I have with application for a few, and the opacity, but overall it is a great collection. As always you made them all look entirely stand out Eugenia, great work my dear
Awwww, Toya….thanks so much! I feel bad that I still haven’t posted part 2 yet – to say that this past month has been hectic for me, would be a gross understatement! I must admit that the more I look at these shades, the more they grow on me and I have to say, that I was also pretty impressed with the formula on each; then again, I’ve yet to be let down by China Glaze! Glad you’re giving them another look and perhaps loving a few more in the process!

Big Sis seeing these colours makes me feel like I’m watching an episode of The Fresh Prince!
Hahaha! Brings back the gool ‘ole days, doesn’t it? These may be as “in-your-face” as that show used to be, but they’ve definitely been modernized for today, Lil Sis!
Hmm…I am intrigued my friend, I will investigate further.
Get your Sherlock cap on and investigate away, mon amie!
At the moment I am reading this, I am hungry and now I want a bag of skittles! Or I could lick your fingernails!
those are great colors even though I am not a neon fan myself. This seems to have the slight sophistication which allows them to be worn by us sophisticated adults!
Hahahaha! You may find the Skittles a lot tastier than my nails!!! And I like the “us sophisticated adults” line…very nice touch, lol!
Gorgeous swatches as always my dear! You know, I went from initially not wanting any of these to owning almost all of this collection. These are seriously the best neon polishes I’ve ever had the pleasure to use. The pigmentation is amazing, especially for polish ‘problem children’ that neons can be. They even nailed a yellow neon! Now that’s a feat!
Rie, you are so right when you say that these neons are amazing — and I love the twist China Glaze has given them with the inclusion of shimmer – nice surprise! And yellow…not just any yellow, but a total in-your-face kind of hue that just screams summer!! Love it!
China Glaze so rarely disappoints me. I thought the promos for this collection looked pretty boring (oohh, neons for summer, quelle surprise!), but I started to see swatches and I was convinced by the raves and the pretty shimmer. Then I went to the store and almost didn’t buy anything because they looked boring in the bottle, but I had a coupon and I decided to go for it. Good thing I did because I love them! A lot of polishes promise beauty in the bottle that they don’t deliver on the nail but these are the other way around for sure. From this set I only got Flirty Tankini but I’m thinking I might have to go back Lifeguard and/or Pink Plumeria, they’re just all so pretty!
You’re 100% correct when you say that a lot of brands, both high AND low-end, look so promising in the bottle then fizz once applied; it’s nice to know that a brand like China Glaze manages to be both cost-effective and able to deliver as well! Wait til I post my second half — then see which other shades you may like to pick up!
WOW! I didn’t think I liked any of these when I saw them in store. But the swatches came up amazingly! :O I really want to try all the coral-pink shades!
Glad you’re giving them a second look, Eileen! Wait til you see some of the super-bright beauties in part 2!
Oh these are pretty but for some reason, they look rather thick on the nail. Did you put a white under them or just layer on the coats? How many coats did it take? Hehe if you already specified, I didn’t see it. That’s what I get for skimming.
No white underneath – just base coat, 2 coats of polish then finished with top coat! Not sure why is seemed thick on the nail to you, but while the formula itself tends to be thicker than non-neons, it was still very easy to work with. All in all, I’m really impressed with these!
Iunno it’s probably the angle of your nails but it felt very thick D: I’m sure if I’m the only one with that comment, it’s an error/trick of the mind on my eyes only
I pooh pooh’ed this collection when it first came out but I must say, the swatches I see, the more o find myself needing these neons. And the names are great! That’s always an extra added bonus to any polish
While I hadn’t exactly “pooh-poohed” this collection (great term, lol!) I wasn’t exactly ecstatic either — that is, until I actually wore them! Even seeing other swatches wasn’t as convincing as seeing them live, and I’m really happy to be able to say so!
I still am not sure how I feel about this collection. Your swatches are beautiful, as always, of course
I think the shimmer makes them feel a bit retro, but is that good or bad? Hahaha!
Thanks, Larie and yeah….”retro” seems like a pretty good adjective for these; as to whether that’s good or bad, it depends on which side of the fence you’re sitting on, I guess — LOL!! Glad you liked the swatches, my friend!
I couldn’t believe how much I loved this collection. The shimmer just makes them so “WOW”. I have 8 of them and I think I just need to bite the bullet and complete my set, because they are that spectacular. Did I mention, I don’t like neons either? Hahaha. Fantastic swatches as always!
Thanks my friend! Every time I looked at your swatches, apart from reminding me that I was a tad behind in posting mine *doh*, I fell in love with this collection even more! Personally, I was impressed with all 12 – something to push you over the edge in completing your set perhaps?!
You always have THE best nail swatches!! Especially that you keep so clean around the edges and there’s not polish everywhere
I am ALL over this collection though!!!
Thank you so much Nikki, for your lovely compliment!
I never thought of myself as a neon kind of person, but this collection has changed all that!
What a very happy collection and descriptions are right on.
Lol….thank you for that — I love how you can appreciate that!
