Demeter Fragrance Library – Vanilla Cookie Dough & Dark Chocolate
With a selection of over 250 fragrances to choose from, Demeter is absolutely correct in naming their vast collection a “library”; inspired by everyday objects and experiences – ‘Dirt’, anyone? How about ‘Zombie for Her’ and ‘Zombie for Him’? And who wouldn’t want ‘Clean Skin’? – there is nothing common or ordinary about these fragrances, and with such a selection to choose from, I dare you to try and narrow it down to just one favourite!
About Demeter fragrances: 95% natural ingredients, with alcohol naturally fermented from corn, no artificial colours, no pthalates, no binders or emulsifiers, and no extra packaging to discard.
These single note fragrances take their cue from life itself and each scent can either stand alone, be “layered” for longer lasting power (ie: body lotion before the actual scent), and even combined with other Demeter fragrances for a uniquely personal touch. Not meant to be as complex as designer options where you’re basically buying into a specific lifestyle being projected, these are instead focussed on a more personal level, meant to evoke and convey something meaningful to each & every user.

Demeter – Vanilla Cookie Dough & Dark Chocolate
Vanilla Cookie Dough (US $20.00 1.0 fl. oz/30 ml) – described as “dense, delicious, full-bodied and without that cloying sweetness that vanilla fragrances can develop”, is exactly that. There’s nothing to distract the nose from the absolutely mouth-watering vanilla cookie-dough scent, and you’re almost tempted to taste it – it’s THAT good! This scent was inspired by Demeter CEO, Mark D. Crame’s 13-year old daughter, who recently discovered the wonders of edible cookie dough (no eggs).
Initially, as with all fragrances, the scent is quite redolent, although it seems to quickly melt into a mellower version as body heat reacts with it. There was no bitterness or bizarre after-scent, and it simply faded away. Worn alone, I can’t say that lasting power is all that long – I got roughly 3 hours before I simply couldn’t detect it any more, but another quick spritz is all it takes for a pick-me-up.
Dark Chocolate (US $20.00 1.0 fl.0z/30 ml) – described as “A silky smooth, absolutely sensual and indulgent chocolate fragrance. Deep, rich and exotic”. Definitely. This scent is THE best way to wear chocolate, without physically resorting to slathering the stuff all over your body. Milk chocolate might have come across as too childlike and overly sweet; choosing to emulate dark chocolate, is nothing short of genius in its simplicity and warm luxury.
With a provenance that goes back at least 3000 years from the time this was a bitter drink in pre-historic South America, and the only form of chocolate available until the 19th century when milk was finally added to it, this scent is truly the history of dark chocolate itself.
As with Vanilla Cookie Dough, the initial spraying was very present, but contact with the skin rounds out any rough edges almost immediately. I found lasting power to be a little longer with this scent, but not by a significant stretch of time. I even layered the 2 together, and created a unique & complimentary vanilla-chocolate-cookie-dough scent … totally drool-worthy.
Below is a simple to make and incredibly tasty cookie recipe, provided by Demeter; I’ve already made these cookies twice, and it’s now part of my permanent recipe collection. If oat flour isn’t readily available, do what I did: I purchased organic oats and ground them using a food processor. Depending on your preferences, you could also increase the vanilla to 2 teaspoons, as I did. PS: The opening photo is with the cookies made using this recipe!

Final thoughts: When I first came upon Demeter Fragrances, it was a long time ago and when the selection was less than 20 – I used to pick them up and smell them in wonder; they actually smell like what they’re called – no guesswork needed to figure out their inspiration, that’s for sure. For the times when I’m looking to wear something simple, these single note fragrances are perfect and the fact that I’m not committing to an extra long-lasting scent, makes it easy to try several on in one day. The best part? I can have as much cookie dough and chocolate as I want – without gaining an ounce!
Demeter Fragrances are available through their website and at select Loblaws stores, including the Real Canadian Superstore in Canada.

These scents are definitely up my alley! I love gourmand scents and I’m fairly certain these would pass with flying colors in my home! I used to sniff Demeter fragrances every time I walked by but now they’re a little bit out of sight/out of mind for me. I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled – maybe I’ll actually give them a go this time!
Let me know if you find them and if so, which scents you decide to go for!
I’ve yet to hunt down Demeter at my local Loblaw’s but I really hope that they’re there. I’m not a huge fan of gourmand scents, but I’d love to sniff these two regardless! And now I’m hungry for cookies!
Even if you don’t find the scents to give them the old sniff test, you NEED to make the cookies on this recipe – they’re awesome!
I posted a comment earlier today but apparently it didn’t come through… Do you happen to know if Dark Chocolate is available online somwhere? Or could it be a Canada exclusive? I can’t seem to find it…
Your comment did come through – I was just a little busy & couldn’t answer at the time! See my earlier response!
I hadn’t heard of the brand so I checked them out a couple of days ago after seeing your picture on Instagram. I am a sucker for these type of fragrances so I just had to order a couple of different ones on FragranceX!! You don’t want to know what I have been spending on full nail polish collections and now perfume (!) since I started follwing your blog lol I have a feeling this might become a little addictive too… By the way, do you happen to know if Dark Chocolate is available online anywhere? I can’t find it, maybe it’s a Canada exclusive?
Hello Ruth, I am so happy to hear that you enjoy my posts – love hearing from readers, like yourself! I don’t know if your wallet is all that happy with me now, lol!
As to Demeter’s Dark Chocolate, I know that along with Vanilla Cookie Dough, the 2 were just released this month so perhaps the site hasn’t been updated yet? In any case, I have asked my rep and as soon as I hear back, I’ll be sure to let you know!
Thank you so much! And sorry for the double post, I didn’t realize it was awaiting moderation
