essie – Summer 2013 Collection

essie Summer 2013 opener

When I first laid eyes (and hands!) on essie’s Summer 2013 Collection back in March, I was blown away by COLOUR! After a long & dreary Winter, I was so ready for the vivid happiness & warmth as embodied by these 6 shades, five of which hold a type of dancing shimmer within, while the last hue almost seems to jump out at me for attention. Make no mistake about it: you will definitely want to get your Summer on with these beauties …

Rock The Boat – a semi-sheer dusty cornflower blue shade with ultra fine silver & prismatic irregularly shaped glass-flecked shimmer that while subtle, is still quite visible in daylight. Bearing a hybrid jelly-crème formula, you do need to wait at least 1 1/2 minutes between coats to avoid any dragging or creating bald patches. Coats applied: 3 thin, plus top coat

Full Steam Ahead – a slightly cool-leaning lilac hue with dove grey undertones in its base, in the same formula and shimmer as ‘Rock The Boat’. Upon initial application, you could possibly see some clumpiness occuring if the polish is overworked, but that is completely resolved by any subsequent layers. Coats applied: 3 thin, plus top coat

The More The Merrier – an ultra vivid lime green hue that straddles a neon line, in a jelly-esque formula – – and the only shade without any shimmer of this collection. An absolutely unique colour that while vibrant, still manages to be quite wearable and finishes in a totally self-levelling and glossy shine. Coats applied: 3 ultra thin, plus top coat

Sunday Funday – a coral/pink hue with finely ground prismatic as well as irregularly shaped glass-flecked shimmer, in a jelly-esque formula that bears a higher colour saturation than the previous shades, making application very smooth & easy. Depending on your nail length, you could easily get away with 2 simple layers. Coats applied: 3 thin, plus top coat

The Girls Are Out – a rich magenta/fuchsia combination hue in a jelly-like formula and bearing the same finely ground prismatic and irregularly shaped glass flecked shimmer. Excellent colour pigmentation, application, and glassy shine at the finish – along with the ability to be worn by both cool & warmer skin tones equally. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat

Naughty Nautical – a spectacular turquoise/teal hue, slightly green-leaning and with the same prismatic and irregularly shaped glass flecked shimmer of the others in this collection. This hybrid crème-jelly formula made for the best flow and easiest application of the 6, with a stellar pigmentation and super glossy finish at the end. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat

Last word: From the 6 shades of this collection, ‘Rock The Boat’ and ‘Full Steam Ahead’, may seem similar to previous essie releases, although I must state that their shimmer does set them apart from earlier versions. Even ‘Sunday Funday’ and ‘The Girls Are Out’ may feel somewhat familiar, but in looking through my rather extensive essie stash, I realized that I own nothing like them. Of them all, I would have to say that ‘The More The Merrier’ stands out for its unusual and in-your-face tone, but for me, the winner of the bunch is ‘Naughty Nautical’, as much for the formula, its aquatically-themed colour, and the name. I’ll take anything naughty, thank you very much.

The essie Summer 2013 Collection will be available as of early June.

I don’t know if this has already been asked, but what top coat do you use?

    • Eugenia says:

As I mentioned to the previous commenter, I have several I like using, but I generally keep brands together. For all of these, Essie’s No Chips Ahead top coat was used

  2. Melinda says:

Love this! Can’t wait for it to come out here

  3. Naughty Nautical and Sunday Funday are SO pretty :) I think I will have to pick them up… I will have to wait until I get payed though 😉
You have an amazing blog. I love your swatch pictures :)
I have linked to this post in my newest post since you had the best pictures that I could find of The More the Merrier :)
Oh Im a new follower through bloglovin :)

  4. Cindy says:

I just picked up Sunday Funday, The Girls are Out and Full Steam Ahead. They are all beautiful and I love the jelly formulas. Sunday Funday is a shimmery California Coral ( which is one of my absolute favorites). Love them all!

  5. Aria Viamanis says:

    Where did you buy this?

  6. Grace says:

How close is The More the Merrier to China Glaze Def Defying from the Cirque du Soleil collection?

    • Eugenia says:

Unfortunately, I am away on holiday at the moment and can’t provide you with a true comparison, but if memory serves me right, Essie’s ‘The More The Merrier’ is a few degrees lighter in tone than China Glaze’s ‘Def Defying’, as well as being a touch more yellow-leaning. Sorry I couldn’t be more precise than this :(

    • Gina says:

I haven’t compared swatches, but I brought my bottle of Def Defying to the store to compare and they were very, very close. So close that I couldn’t justify purchasing the Essie. I may change my mind when I see actual swatch comparisons, but in the bottle I could not tell the difference.

      • Eugenia says:

I wish I could help you in more detail, but it won’t be until I return from my holiday. I do agree that the two are quite close, however.

      • Grace says:

Thanks, I figured they’d be very close. With some colors, even the slightest difference between two polishes is enough to make me want them both, but with neon chartreuse, I think one is enough for me!

      • Eugenia says:

I’d have to agree with that as well….neon chartreuse is not a colour that you’d want too many off; one is original enough!

  7. Courtney says:

These are so beautiful :) great swatches! I could probably do without the light blue and purple but I really want the rest! Naughty nautical and the girls are out are so pretty :)

  8. Kay says:

How does Rock the Boat compare to last year’s summer collection namesake Bikini So Teeny? They look quite similar, and both have that subtle shimmer to them…

    • Eugenia says:

Because I am away on holiday as I write this to you, I can’t really offer a detailed comparison (don’t have the shades with me!), but from what my swatches show & if memory serves me right, ‘Rock The Boat’ has much more visible shimmer and more of it than ‘Bikini So Teeny’ does — although they do appear to be close, it’s true. Wish I could help more than that :(

  9. Erin says:

Love these! I just picked up The Girls are Out and Naughty Nautical. I wanted Sunday Funday, but it’s quite close to Cute as a Button, just slightly more orange and with shimmer. Seeing as I have Dior Delice too, I probably can’t justify it. :)

  10. Natacha says:

These are absolutely GORGEOUS! Your swatches are perfect and I’m dying over this collection… I want every single colour!

  11. Deb says:

This collection was out at a hairdresser near my office today. I picked up The Girls Are Out and No Baggage Please. I came close to getting Naughty Nautical but thought I should probably pass it up since I’ve gone on a complete polish binge in the last two weeks. Somehow i doubt my restraint will last…

Thanks for the gorgeous swatches, although they completely enabled me. :)

    • Eugenia says:

LOL! You’re welcome, Deb — at least, I’m glad you like my swatches, but sorry for the binge-induction! Great shades you picked up – enjoy!

  12. Oh, I didn’t realize these had shimmer. Gah, the blue is so pretty. But the only one I would think of getting is Funday Sunday — kind of reminds me of the Dior spring shades except darker.

    • Eugenia says:

Someone else asked me if Sunday Funday was close to one of the new Diors, and when I pulled Délice to compare, you can immediately see that the essie is more peach/pink leaning versus the orange-y base of the Dior — even their shimmer is quite different. Good to know, especially if you’re looking for a reason to justify owning both, lol!

  13. Latoya says:

Fabulous collection here Eugenia! Love them all in their own right – four of the 6 I’d totally wear, and two I probably wouldn’t but can see why others would still fall for them (can you guess which two? :P).

  14. Mara says:

wow great collection! Naughty Nautical is a must have for sure, but I see many colors I love too!

  15. Sinead says:

I saw these at Target last night and the display was already ravaged! I didn’t buy anything, but I’m seriously considering Naughty Nautical and The More The Merrier, if they come back in stock. Of course, you make everything look great!

    • Eugenia says:

Awww…thanks, Sinead! :) It’s odd that some places are already showing the collection before they’re told to, but not much we can do about that. Hopefully you’ll find the shades that you want from these beauties!

  16. Angela says:

What a stunning summer collection *__* Of course, Naughty Nautical is my favourite of the bunch–I can never resist a good turquoise or teal!

  17. Oh my goodness…essie is doing it up this summer. First time in a long time I want the whole essie collection. Your swatches are beautiful. Can you see the shimmer in the shade?

    • Eugenia says:

Thanks so much! It’s a fabulous collection, to be sure! As to the shimmer, obviously the deeper shades display it better, but even with the two lighter shades you can still get hints of it. Not the totally invisible type, that’s for sure!

  18. Sunday Funday is gorgeous! Would you say the colour compares to Tarte Deco, or am I way off?

  19. francoamerica says:

I’ve been eagerly awaiting your review of this collection and I am not disappointed! I love the whole thing. It’s been a while since I’ve actually purchased an entire seasonal collection but I might have to end that streak. BUT OMG NAUGHTY NAUTICAL… SO PRETTY! Thanks so much for the swatches!

  20. Julia says:

Gorgeous collection. My favorites are Rock the Boat and Naughty Nautical. I actually think that the shimmer and Essie creme-jelly formula (it’s almost a signature of theirs at this point, no?) make this a unique collection, even if the base colors are reminiscent of others. I kept scrolling back up while typing my comment and I think I want to The Girls Are Out, too :).

    • Eugenia says:

Yes, I think you may be right in that essie has become known for this unique crème-jelly hybrid formula. Like I’ve said to other readers, no matter which shade you choose from this collection, you really can’t go wrong!

  21. Julie says:

I´m a Essie´s fan and this Collection looks amazing! I love Sunday Funday, Naughty Nautical and The girls are out. I hope I´ll get at least one of them online because here in Argentina we don´t have Essie :-(

  22. bmr says:

I think I need this entire collection, which I usually never say. These are lovely, especially naughty nautical. that’s the must have in this collection for me.

    great swatches. :)

  23. Michelle says:

I really love the addition of shimmer; it’s what really makes these polishes! Rock the Boat is such a pretty Cinderella color, and I have a weakness for corals. I’ll be looking out for Rock the Boat and Sunday Funday!

  24. Jennifer A. says:

Wow! I am rarely an Essie fan, but I love this collection. I want all the creme/shimmers!

  25. Rachael says:

Omg this collection is gorgeous! I’m wondering if China Glaze Exotic Encounters is similar to Naughty Nauticals minus the shimmer?

    • Eugenia says:

I didn’t swatch them to compare 100%, but it appear the China Glaze is a few tones deeper and without any turquoise hints like the essie has

  26. In love with ALL the shades. Thanks for this amazing post!

  27. Sarah says:

Oooh I love this entire collection. Can’t wait for it to show up in stores. I was never a huge essie fan but they have been knocking it out of the park lately.

    • Eugenia says:

I totally agree! When essie was bought out by L’Oréal, everyone hit the panic button, but in my humble opinion, I think that they’ve only gotten better!

  28. prysmatique says:

Sunday Funday reminds me a lot of OPI Lunch at the Delhi with the added unique shimmer that’s in this collection. Your swatches look awesome and I can’t wait till these are in stores near me :)

  29. These look amazing! The turquoise one is calling my name.

  30. Sarah says:

Oooh, I love all of these! I’m surprised that one of them is named Sunday Funday though, considering China Glaze just put out a polish by the same name

    • Eugenia says:

You must remember that while we see the collections all pop up around the same time, the brands actually work on them months in advance; it happens from time to time that their respective creative teams come up with the same name for a shade (oops!), but in this case, the China Glaze version is blue. Still, it can get confusing!

  31. Pinkpamalamma says:

Mmmm, Naughty Nautical! Be still my teal loving heart!! I’m really liking The Girls Are Out, as well!

    • Eugenia says:

It’s AWESOME! I mentioned that it was a turquoise, but to be fair it has more of a teal look, it’s true. The Girls Are Out is even more impressive in person, believe me!

  32. harapanien says:

The last essie Collections weren’t really great, but this here – I’m so in love with Sunday Funday! In Germany we’ll get this lovely polishes first in June. :-/

    • Eugenia says:

That’s good, as it’s only really being released in early June here in North America as well, although several places cheat and put them out earlier than they’re supposed to. You’ll love Sunday Funday!

  33. Ohh, they are all stunning. I think I have to get the whole collection. Gorgeous!

  34. Great swatches! I really like Naughty Nautical and Rock the Boat. I really liked the way you arranged the bottles in the first few shots. It was really creative :)

  35. This is a really great collection. I wonder how Sunday Funday compares to Dior Delice. I really love all of the shimmers.

What are your thoughts, beautiful?
