a-england – Ballerina Collection

a-england Ballerina opener

I will just go on the assumption that by now, you’ve all heard of the amazing-ness of a-england lacquers – if not, then I urge you to check out my reviews of this entire range by clicking on the sidebar tab … and I challenge you to not fall instantly in love with everything.

One reason that every collection from this brand is so eagerly anticipated, lies in how founder & creative genius, Adina Bodana, manages to merge a touch of culture & history with every release. Another reason is due to the formula: perfection – in every detail, from the flow to the colours.

This capsule collection draws its inspiration from Dame Margot Fonteyn, easily recognizable as one of the world’s most unparalleled classical dance ballerinas of all time, along with that of her lifelong career partner, the incomparable Rudolf Nureyev. These four shades are all takes on this theme – as ethereal and hauntingly beautiful as that of a perfectly executed pas de deux, with an overall elegance to each that cannot be denied.

A word on the formula: while some prismatic lacquers may need a specific base and/or top coat to amplify their effect, these four a-england shades apply ridiculously easily straight from the bottle, without any visible brush strokes and all ending with a high-gloss natural finish, while top coat seems to enhance, rather than diminish their holographic-ness.

In 1962, their first full-length ballet together, Giselle, received 30 curtain calls – an unprecedented achievement

When I was a little girl, I dreamed of being of ballerina (and a mermaid, and a princess), so anything classical-dance related has always had the ability to completely captivate me. The four shades of this latest a-england collection manage to make even the often-extravagantly flashy finish of holographic polish, appear elegant, sophisticated, and eminently wearable – at times as delicate as tulle, at others radiating a brilliant intensity as that of stage lights. I may never be a prima ballerina, but I will revel in wearing this magic across my fingers. Applause, welcome.

    • Eugenia says:

Thanks so much, Toya! Oh…how I wish I could have been a ballerina; the graceful movements, I have. Unfortunately, I have the flexibility of a hippo.LOL!

  3. audreychaix says:

Hi Eugenia – first comment here!
Growing more and more addicted to nail polish thanks to French bloggers like Pshiiit – whose online shop is a gift from God since we French nailistas can order A England little gems there, since we can’t from Adina’s website…
Thanks for the beautiful swatches. This new collection is just breathtaking.

    • Eugenia says:

Bonjour Audrey et Bienvenue! So happy to hear from you! It’s great that you have a ready source to pick up Adina’s babies and I’m 100% with you on how sad it is that we can’t order directly from her anymore – she’s bothered by that more than all of us put together, believe me! Glad you like the collection!

      • audreychaix says:

        Thanks for your prompt reply!
I have to confess that I’m not only a big fan of A England nail polishes shades and beauty, I also love all the stories Adina thinks up when she creates a collection. You feel like wearing history at the tip of your fingers!

      • Eugenia says:

Exactly! She channels art, beauty, culture & history so beautifully – I’ve loved that about her, from the very start!

  4. Angélina says:

Oh my God ! They are so beautiful ! Gorgeous, as always with that brand !

  5. Helena says:

Aand now I have to enter this giveaway. Your swatches are stunning!

  6. Another stunning collection from Adina!! I thought I needed just Dancing with Nureyev, but your swatches and review made me change my mind :-P (I love AEngland flawless formula).
BTW I really enjoyed to read also about Margot Fonteyn’s life!

Last but not least, thanks for the international giveaway, I will surely take my chances :D

  7. Patricia midory says:

Wow! This collection is beautiful!!! I love your swatches!! Make me want them even more!! I hope I win!!
First coment ever but, Always loved your blog! As a nail polish fanatic I thank you for every fantastic swatches you give to us!!

    • Eugenia says:

Thank you so much, Patricia and welcome! I’m always so happy when my readers take the time to leave a few words, and I appreciate your support! Glad you enjoyed the post!

  8. I need these in my hoard! I hope that eventually I will be able to order directly from A England again. I know there are some sites like Ninja Polish that stock them but I just live right over in Germany. Perhaps I will have to pick some up on my next trip back to the States & Canada.

    • Eugenia says:

It’s a real shame that Royal Mail put the kibosh on shipping nail polish – that was a huge blow to Adina, but she found a way around it. Hopefully things will once again settle down, but in the meantime, it’s good to know that there is a large list of stockists that can help!

      • Snail Polish says:

I doubt that Royal Mail will change their policy. It’s getting ridiculously prohibitive, and the at-counter grilling one must endure is on the verge of privacy infringement!

Anyway – lovely swatches. I think I like Rose Adagio the best, but it’s a tough call!

      • Eugenia says:

It’s a tough call, indeed – they’re all SO amazing! As to Royal Mail, I can understand your frustration – Canada Post is not any better AND they’re fazing out door to door service. Crazy times!

  9. Debbie says:

These colors are so lovely … thanks for the giveaway and making it available internationally; just sent in my entry. I love this brand – it’s always fantastic. Started out with Dragon and St George and fell in love with them. As always the formula is wonderful and colors so beautifully composed. Thanks for showing us such fantastic swatches and photos for all the collections — makes it easy to decide which polishes are must-haves for my collection! :D

  10. Julia says:

Gosh such a lovely collection. My favorites are the first two–so delicate yet sparkly at the same time. Plus lavender will always be a favorite of mine.

When my mother was pregnant my father suggested that they name me “Allegra”, after the ballerina Allegra Kent, but my mother didn’t care for it. Although it’s objectively a lovely name I am quite happy they didn’t choose it, as it now immediately calls to mind the allergy medicine :(.

    • Eugenia says:

Hahahaha! Can you imagine being confused with allergy medicine?! Glad you enjoyed the swatches, Julia and yes…lavender is just so lovely (and flattering!) :)

  11. Kat says:

    Adina has done it again!

  12. sobsessed says:

These photos and review made my heart skip a beat (or two)! Absolutely GORGEOUS, divine, fantastic… shall I go on?
I love how you captured the spirit of the mini-collection and gave us a little bit of a history lesson with each beautiful shade. And well… a-england… what is there to say but I can’t WAIT to have this set! Adina is amazingly talented and this collection is no different than all my other a-englands. MUST-haves. xo

    • Eugenia says:

Awww…thanks so much, Aire – it makes me so happy to hear that you enjoyed the post; it was actually hard trying to condense all that I wanted to say in just a few short paragraphs (ok..some maybe a little longer than others, lol!) as there’s nothing I love more than this merging of culture with beauty!

      • sobsessed says:

You’re so welcome :) All the info provided was perfect background to the beautiful collection!
And I know exactly what you mean… I love the backstory to each of the a england collections! xx

      • Eugenia says:

You’re a doll, my friend! Somehow that backstory makes each and every collection that much more personal and meaningful – in a society where so much is disposable, it’s nice to slow things down every now & then and truly appreciate!

  13. Ines Kennedy says:

I was literally WOW at the whole collection, but I have to say, “Dancing With Nureyev” really caught my eye. What a divine shade to the eye!

  14. Sara says:

    YES YES YESSSS!

  15. Terry N says:

Thanks for the giveaway your photo’s are stunning just like the polish!

  16. lykafae says:

AEngland…my favorite brand of polish. Those are flawless and so beautiful. They look absolutely stunning on you. I just love the story behind this collection. Thank you. :-)

  17. Louise Markussen says:

I need these beauties in my life!

  18. Maribeth says:

Oh my lord, I’ve been thinking about these since I spied your first pics on Instagram! They are gorgeous!!

  19. Lost the challenge at first sight. My heart skipped a beat when I saw these beauties!

  20. Wow! Such incredibly beautiful and subtle colours and perfect holo effect. The photos are so wonderful and your swatches are, as usual, perfection.

  21. Lorraine says:

Eugenia, thanks for a perfect post on this amazing collection! Loving all the ballet photos- I am a dance fan, and have read so much about these legendary figures. the most amazing part of their story is that her dancing with Nureyev came at a time when most ballerinas are put out to pasture. She showed the world that she still had so much to offer and created magic with an untried, younger partner, to the benefit of both. A testament to Fonteyn and to the power of the mature woman! Couldn’t wait for your full review, I had to order the entire collection on the preview swatches, so thanks for those, too. If anyone is wondering about Encore Margot- it is silvery, almost a neutral, and very flattering. The closest I have in my stash is butter London Dodgy Barnett, which is a similar idea, but much sheerer, with a cooler undertone.

    • Lorraine says:

I meant to say, Encore Margot has a cooler undertone than Dodgy Barnett. and Dodgy Barnett is way way sheerer. Different polishes, similar idea. Definitely not dupes.

      • Eugenia says:

That’s how I understood your words! And thanks for including the comparisons! My entire stash is pretty much boxed at the moment (I feel like it’s been boxed forever – can’t wait until my storage issues are finally over!) so I didn’t bother with comparisons – your descriptions will definitely help other readers, however!

    • Eugenia says:

Thank you for such an eloquent response, Lorraine – and for your take on Encore Margot’s shade, I really appreciate the input!

As to “the power of the mature woman” (I SO LOVE THAT), you are 100% correct; this incredible dancer sure showed the world, didn’t she? ;)

  22. innerpurple says:

Oh!!! So beautiful! Wonderful shades! Dancing with Nureyev is my favourite.

  23. Valery Felies says:

beautiful collection i wold love to have them thank you for the giveaway

  24. Emily B says:

Definitely love Dancing With Nureyev the most. and also like Her Rose Adagio. The others seem too silvery – not enough differentiation or uniqueness for me. But love a-england for formula, concepts, being such an amazing, professional, high quality indie brand. Lots of things :)

  25. Larie says:

They are all so delicately beautiful! And of course your swatches are exquisite, as always, Eugenia!

  26. That’s the first a-England collection I bought without any full-scale review, just trusting my previous experience with this brand – and, naturally, I am echanted once more :) Adina is a magician, and this collection is my best Christmas present… to myself :) I had some doubts on how different Encore Margot and Fonteyn are, but I’m glad I ordered both – now I see that you can’t mistake them.

    • Eugenia says:

That you would buy sight unseen, is a testament to the quality and integrity of this brand, and I’m so not surprised! Glad you ordered both Encore Margot & Fonteyn because while both on the lighter side, they still manage to be quite different one from the other – enjoy your beauties when they arrive!

  27. Sophie O. says:

Adina’s polishes, your swatches, the pics from Fonteyn and Nurerev you chose for this blog post, they’re all wonderful! *dreamy sigh*
I can’t wait for Santa to arrive and hopefully bring me these pretties!

  28. Chantal says:

These are all gorgeous!!! But then again I have never seen a polish from them that was not…! :-)

  29. Rebecca says:

I bought every one but Encore Margot, and now I think I have to have that one too!

  30. adina a-england says:

My heart jumped! This post is pure bliss! Thank you thank you Eugenia xx

  31. Katelyn says:

Beautiful mini collection! That last blue is just stunning! Thank you for holding this giveaway and making it international! ;)
