CHANEL – Joues Contraste #88 Vivacité & #89 Canaille, limited edition

CHANEL Vivacite & Canaille opener

Launched with the recently released Perfection Lumière Velvet Collection from CHANEL, are two limited edition blushes in the Joues Contraste Powder Blush formula, #88 Vivacité and #89 Canaille – both highly pigmented and despite their vivid appearance, have the uncanny ability to suit a large variety of skin tones. I was immediately drawn to the lush magenta hue of #88 Vivacité, but #89 Canaille‘s unique warmth called to me as well – a couple of quick counter swatches later, and they were both on their way home with me.

CHANEL Vivacite

Joues Contraste Powder Blush #88 Vivacité (CAN $48.00) – A deep magenta hue in a velvet powder baked formula, scented with CHANEL’s signature rose fragrance (which doesn’t last past the initial application – at least not to my nose). While there’s no discernible shimmer or shine, this highly pigmented blush leaves a lush layer of colour on the skin; semi-matte but not flat looking. You would think that the purple undertones might make this shade appear cool-leaning, but its intensity helps it suit even warmer complexions. As #88 Vivacité is incredibly colour-saturated, a light hand in application is definitely advised – one light swipe of your brush, tapped first to remove any excess, can be all you need per cheek. Another option that I personally like, is to use a fan brush; this gives the most believable flush of colour.

I’ve seen #88 Vivacité applied on a variety of skin tones, and what impressed me from the start, is how incredibly brightening it is on everyone – as though it supplies luminosity to the face, along with a gorgeously youthful hue to the cheeks. This shade is even perfect for very dark complexions, as unlike other pink blushes, it will actually show up along the skin without any ashiness.

CHANEL Canaille

Joues Contraste Powder Blush #89 Canaille (CAN $48.00) – A rich cinnamon bark hue with ultra-fine pink/peach shimmer in CHANEL’s baked powder blush formula, and scented with the signature rose fragrance the brand is known for. As with #88 Vivacité, this shade is also incredibly colour saturated and a little goes a long way. Despite its warm-leaning tendencies, the finely milled shimmer adds a unique touch which should also help this colour suit cooler complexions as well. The beauty of #89 Canaille, is that it can perform double-duty both as a blush and/or a bronzer, making it a very versatile investment.

With the warmer weather finally here, this shade will be the perfect complement to lightly tanned skin, as it can add a light touch of colour (just make sure to not load up your brush first) as well as a subtle glow from the shimmer – and all you’ll need for skin that looks luminously sunkissed.

Somehow, and only as CHANEL can, this brand has managed to not only create two very original blush shades, but has taken what can appear as scary-pigmented colour and made it 100% workable. Understanding the limitations of such incredibly saturated hues goes a long way in how successfully you’ll apply them, where following the ‘”you can always add more, but you can’t take away” mantra will serve you well indeed. Do you need #88 Vivacité & #89 Canaille? Yes, if you’re a) a CHANEL addict fan and b) if you’re looking for unique additions to your personal collection. I can’t think of a good NO reason.

I purchased these at The Bay (Canada), but they are also available at Holt Renfrew – just bear in mind that they are limited edition.

  1. They are beautiful and I picked up both. This past month was such a beauty buffet!

    • Eugenia says:

A beauty buffet…love that! How can anyone in their beauty-loving mind resist these two? I was just doing a quick headcount of all the new blushes I’ve gotten lately, and it’s making me dizzy — may have to start slathering on the colours just to say that I used them all, lol! Bet these look awesome on you, Liz!

  2. The magenta looks gorgeous!

    • Eugenia says:

It is! It’s a colour rarely seen in blush format, especially from a luxury brand like CHANEL, but I absolutely love the fresh & bright colour it gives to the skin!

  3. Latoya says:

Both very pretty! I’ve never been fully allured by the Chanel blushes for some reason, but I can’t think of a good ‘no’ reason either LOL. But if I were to pick, it’d definitely be Vivacite!

    • Eugenia says:

My collection of CHANEL blushes may not be vast, but it’s a fairly good selection and I can honestly say that I never expected this brand to produce something like this – Vivacité will look killer on you!

  4. Lucy says:

Hi! I nominated you for the Sisterhood Award 😀

What are your thoughts, beautiful?
