CHANEL Ombres Tracées Jardin Zen (LE), Jardin des Camélias Collection 2014

CHANEL Jardin Zen & Rose des Vents opener

Taking inspiration from Gabrielle Coco’s love of the camellia flower but fused with a Japanese Zen aesthetic, the latest capsule collection to be released from CHANEL, Jardin des Camélias, is an elegant and soft-spoken grouping of products. The Ombres Tracées Jardin Zen quad, showcased in today’s post, features a quartet of silky hues with an intricate embossing on its surface – reminiscent of a Japanese Zen Sand Garden with its undulating lines – and holds shades that range from satin, luminous, to semi-matte, in the European baked formula that can be applied either dry, or dampened for more emphasis.

This past Sunday was Mother’s Day, and I am fortunate to be blessed with a daughter who knows my weaknesses (CHANEL) well, and who gifted me with this stunning eyeshadow quad and accompanying Illusion d’Ombre #94 Rose des Vents, limited edition (to be reviewed soon).

CHANEL Jardon Zen quad

CHANEL Ombres Tracées Jardin Zen, Limited Edition (CAN $66.00) – The four shades of the quad are (clockwise from the top left): gray/mauve, champagne/oyster, glimmering ebony, and dusty pink. Bearing a finely milled texture, each shade (with the exception of the darkest) is a study is subtle colour when applied dry – although still buildable, but given much more drama when applied damp (see swatch photo). The colours all blend beautifully and easily, and I didn’t notice any significant powdery kickback when I swirled my brush in any of the shades. Each colour holds that sophisticated unique CHANEL shimmer, which may not be overt (definitely seen in the pan, however), but serves to add a beautiful overall depth of tone. Lasting power (on primed lids) extends easily past the 10 hour mark with no creasing or fading.

That this is an understated grouping of colours, is a given; it may also pass undetected by most, given the fact that no major fanfare seemed to accompany this collection. If its high-voltage impact you seek in your eyeshadows, then the Ombres Tracées Jardin Zen quad will fall short of expectations. In my opinion, however, this quartet of shades is actually quite sublime; their silky/satiny texture makes them eminently wearable, while the colours will suit a variety of skin tones and compliment eyes to the max. Then there’s the design: like miniature works of art for your eyes.
