MAC |Aphrodite’s Shell & Delphic Extra Dimension Bronzing Powders, Alluring Aquatic Summer 2014

MAC Extra Dimension Bronzing Powders opener

Of the four bronzers released with MAC’s Alluring Aquatic Collection, I picked up Aphrodite’s Shell and Delphic, both limited edition and which come in the Extra Dimension ‘liquid powder’ formula (the other 2 bronzers of the collection, Golden & Refined Golden, are part of the regular lineup and as such are available year-round at a slightly lower price, but worth picking up just the same if you don’t already own them – most especially for the stunning packaging of this collection). From the unique water droplets on the exterior of the compacts, to the embossed and raised undulating pattern on the surface of the powders, no detail has been overlooked in their creation. Then there’s the names … as a Greek, how could I possibly resist?

MAC Aphrodite's Shell

Aphrodite’s Shell Extra Dimension Bronzing Powder, Limited Edition (CAN $33.00) – the lighter of the two and the shade which is meant to impart more of a tinted glow than a full-on tan, especially due to the pearlized sheen it provides. There’s a slight pink cast to Aphrodite’s Shell which may clash with darker skin tones, but will be absolutely perfect for those with fair skin. The formula is a hybrid gel/liquid/powder (as in the Estée Lauder Gelée Powder variety) and feels almost slippery to the touch, but transforms to a velvety finish upon application. While I didn’t notice any powdery kickback at all upon swirling my brush along the pan, I felt that this particular shade worked best when buffed in with a stiffer brush (such as a kabuki) once applied to the skin. Lasting power is said to be about 10 hours, but I found that I got at most a solid 8 hours before I noticed any significant fading – those with combination skin (such as mine, oily in the T zone), may need to apply a primer first to limit shine; I believe that the emollient nature of this product actually made my skin feel oilier, but overall I still managed to look glowy, and not greasy.

MAC Delphic

Delphic Extra Dimension Bronzing Powder, Limited Edition (CAN $33.00) – the darker of the two and the shade meant to be used as a true bronzer, there’s a hint of caramel in the base which provides an absolutely beautiful warmth to the skin. As with Aphrodite’s Shell, Delphic bears the same properties, with the exception of its lasting power which definitely went much further than the lighter hue. One thing I’ve noticed with basically all bronzers across the board – and these are no exception either – is that you need to pace yourself with application, as they almost seem to “develop” once they merge with the skin. Start by applying a light touch, wait about 5-10 minutes, then go in and see if you need more. That’s the best way to avoid leaning on the wrong side of “faux-glow”, and it helps to avoid any unnecessary corrections.

Online, these are shown as sold out, but I did come across both of them at a recent trip to a MAC counter. As with previous Summer MAC releases, the products featured in the Alluring Aquatic Collection seemed to have spawned a frenzy and were quickly snapped up; I was fortunate enough to pick mine up within a couple days of their launch, but if you happened to miss out, don’t feel too bad as there are plenty of other options available that come in more skin-compatible shades. The formula on both Aphrodite’s Shell and Delphic is amazingly buttery and smooth, but there’s also a bit of learning curve involved in understanding how to best apply them, as they happen to be slightly trickier to work with compared to drier ‘swipe-and-go’ type powders – well worth giving a look if you happen to chance upon them. For me in particular, and given my bronzer fixation which shows no signs of waning, these are both unique in my collection – both in terms of shade and formula. And let’s not forget the Greek connection …

Products were purchased.

  1. I adore my Aphrodite’s Shell too! I’m so glad I was able to get one since they sold out so fast. It’s pretty darn perfect! For some reason I get surprised when I really like something from MAC hahaha.

I know what you mean, Lil Sis — I’ve become over-saturated with the plethora of MAC collections, but their Summer ones are always the only ones I look out for! Glad you were able to snag one!
