MAC Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, Alluring Aquatic Collection Summer 2014

MAC Extra Dimension Eye Shadows opener

My last picks from the MAC Alluring Aquatic Summer 2014 Collection (see previous reviews here, here, and here), were the Extra Dimension Eye Shadows (CAN $22.50 each) — all 6 of them. Apart from the jewel-rich hues and the ever-impressive packaging, the formula on each is what really sold me; a liquid to powder finish, with absolutely amazing colour saturation.

The beauty of the Extra Dimension formula, is the options one has re: application. The texture is buttery smooth – almost gliding along the skin, which also helps each shade blend easily one into the other. The finish leans on the metallic side, but they all still manage to be quite wearable just the same, without fearing the dreaded shiny mirror-ball effect. Staying power is said to be about 6 hours, however as my lids tend to be oily, I always prime first and I was thus able to extend that time significantly. Even though each formula is quite silky, I recommend tapping the excess off your brush just the same, especially with the darker hues, to avoid any potential fallout. More expensive than MAC eye shadows of the permanent range, the CAN $4.50 price hike can definitely be attributed to their complex formula, über-unique packaging, and of course, their limited edition status.

As these shades can be worn either dry (as is) or wet (ie: a dampened brush), the swatches below show them all applied (from left to right): dry, wet, slightly blended out.

*Naturally, and as is usually the case with unique collections such as this, these eyeshadows were sold out in a heartbeat, but even so, a quick look at MAC.ca revealed at least one of these shades as still available.

MAC Lorelei

Lorelei Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, limited edition (CAN $22.50) – soft rose gold, that leans neither too warm nor cool. Perfect for a light wash of colour all across the lid, and can even double as a highlighter in a pinch.

MAC Silver Sun

Silver Sun Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, limited edition (CAN $22.50) – A complex sage green hue with greyish undertones, as well as being another one of those colours that can swing towards both cool and warm complexions. Really makes eyes stand out when worn along the bottom lash line and looks amazing blended with any of the darker shades of this collection.

MAC Sea Worship

Sea Worship Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, limited edition (CAN $22.50) – Described as a tarnished olive on the website, and which happens to be 100% accurate. Sea Worship looks spectacular swiped lightly along the lids and paired with bronzed cheeks – the only shade you’ll want to bring with you on holiday.

MAC Legendary Lure

Legendary Lure Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, limited edition (CAN $22.50) – This shade was probably one of the first to sell out, and I can understand why; a gunmetal hue with teal undertones, Legendary Lure can be sheered out for a light metallic wash, or applied deeper for a truly hypnotic smokey eye look.

MAC Fathoms Deep

Fathoms Deep Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, limited edition (CAN $22.50) – Described as blue on the website (uh, what?) Fathoms Deep pulls more plummy/purple against my skin tone. Totally complimentary paired with green eyes (like mine), this is a shade that looks mysterious and sensual no matter how its worn.

MAC Soul Serenade

Soul Serenade Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, limited edition (CAN $22.50) – A mink brown hue with plum undertones in the base warming it up, yet still manages to cast a silvery sheen (go figure). This is another one of those shades that makes a great alternative to the traditional black smokey eye, especially with its metallic sheen that both captures & reflects light.

Overall, I am quite pleased with my selections from this collection; believe me, it was very tempting to just scoop EVERYTHING up. The Extra Dimension formula is rather new to me, in fact, but I can now understand why others rave about it – these have got to be some of the easiest shadows I’ve ever worked with. So the lesson here: next time MAC releases a limited edition collection, or any collection for that matter, that includes this type of eye shadow, you definitely owe it to yourself to check them out. I know I’ll be keeping that in mind, especially after this experience.

Products purchased by me.

I read your post, then came back to read again a couple days later – I just couldn’t resist staring at the swatches!

I am still sad at missing out on this collection! Was already gearing up to buy the eyeshadows, then I totally forgot about it due to studying for my exams… I only remembered the launch at the end of the day and by the time I got to MAC’s website? BOO HOO, all sold out! Silly me, I should have placed a reminder on my phone!!!

Enjoy your haul, Eugenia! You have one super duper envious person here drooling over your swatches…

I’m so sad to hear that you missed out – I hate it when something like that happens to me. Take heart, my friend, that there will always be something newer (and usually better) to come along – hopefully next time there’s a similar collection, you’ll be able to indulge as you wish!

    These are so beautiful!

  4. Wow! You got ‘em all! Way to haul Big Sis! I didn’t get any of them. Like Toya, I haven’t been wearing eyeshadow a lot lately, so I skipped ‘em. They all look really lovely though! Are you going to depot them? I always struggle with deporting LE MAC stuffs.

    • Eugenia says:

And that wasn’t even the plan, lol! I thought my mega-hauling days were long gone, but I guess I wsa wrong, Lil Sis! As to depotting, I haven’t been able to bring myself to depot any of my MAC shadows that come in LE packaging – I have a large Ziploc baggie filled with them!

  5. Latoya says:

I picked up Soul Serenade, the only thing from the collection, but for the same reason – I’d heard so much good stuff about the ED formula I just had to try it out! As I don’t wear eyeshadow a ton lately, I couldn’t justify bringing home more than one…but darn it if they aren’t ALL SO PRETTY!

    • Eugenia says:

I know! My original thought was to pick up 3 (based on images I saw online) but as soon as I saw & swatched them, that went out the window. Yes, resistance was definitely futile that day!
