The Oscars 2017 · Beauty & Style Roundup
Say what you will, but the 89th Academy Awards show that aired Sunday evening will certainly go down in the books as one of the most entertaining. With an uplifting opening number performed by Justin Timberlake (this man can do no wrong), host Jimmy Kimmel was outstanding and kept the audience totally entertained throughout the evening with his trademark dry humour — no cornball jokes or cheesy skits in sight. Then there was the by-now infamous SNAFU at the very end … oy.
The Oscars 2016 | Beauty & Style Round-up
The 88th Academy Awards presentation was held at the Dolby Theater in L.A. this past Sunday and even with controversy swirling, that old Hollywood saying never rang truer: the show must go on. Hosted by comedian Chris Rock (who did an amazing job and managed to successfully put out several fires while simultaneously cracking everyone up), there was no shortage of glamour present.
It’s become something of an ommorphia tradition to showcase some of my favourite red carpet looks of the event, and this year may just be my favourite yet; the gowns were elegantly spectacular without being over the top and while primary shades were abundant, there was also patterning seen via the use of sequins, strategic beadwork, as well as lace. Hairstyles were polished yet effortless, appearing eminently touchable and varied from softly classic updos to tousled beachy waves. Nails were – not surprisingly – seen mainly in nude tones, with [rare] pops of colour: nothing that would compete with the gown, right? The makeup looks can be summed up in one word: sublime. We saw a return to ‘pretty’ on so many faces, with any excesses either via a bold lip (that was balanced by neutral eyes) or heavy liner (again, balanced by neutral lips).
The highlight of the night, was undoubtedly Leonardo DiCaprio and his win for Best Actor. Can we all now breathe a collective sigh of relief? Apparently the 6th time is the charm, and he accepted his Oscar graciously and with a heartfelt plea to the world regarding the state of our planet. Congrats and well done, Leo – on all counts!
I hope you enjoy the following selections!
Charlize Theron. Seriously, how stunning is this woman?
wearing a Dior Couture gown accessorized with harry Winstone diamonds
Jennifer Lawrence, sporting a new platinum blonde angled bob (I approve!)
wearing a Dior Couture gown
Cate Blanchett (should have won for most flawless complexion)
Wearing Armani Privé embellished with Swarovski crystals, Tiffany & Co jewelry
Kate Winslet
wearing a black silk Ralph Lauren Gown (like wearing an oil slick – LOVE!)
Brie Larson, Best Actress (Room)
wearing a cobalt Gucci gown
Kerry Washington (lashes, brows, and liner totally on point)
wearing Atelier Versace (gladiator-chic. Fierce)
Naomi Watts
wearing a sequinned Armani gown (this mermaid effect is divine)
Olivia Wilde (making boho braids elegant + that pearl choker; WOW)
wearing a Valentino Couture gown
Margot Robbie (the no-makeup look we all wish we could recreate)
wearing Tom Ford (and perfectly channeling the Oscar statuette)
Alicia Vikander, Best Supporting Actress (The Danish Girl)
wearing custom Louis Vuitton (I swear – all I see is Disney’s Belle)
Reese Witherspoon (that gold liner is genius)
wearing an Oscar de la Renta indigo gown
Saris Ronan (I googled how to pronounce her name. Seriously) Also, loving the nod to her Irish roots via the two-toned earrings)
wearing an emerald sequinned Calvin Klein Collection gown
Julianne Moore
wearing CHANEL Couture
Rachel McAdams (revisiting her ‘Mean Girls’ blonde)
wearing a gown by August Getty
Jennifer Garner
wearing a bespoke Versace gown
Rooney Mara (she looks like a porcelain doll, no?)
wearing Givenchy Couture
Emily Blunt, radiant & glowing
proudly sporting her baby bump in a bejewelled Prada gown
Leonardo DiCaprio, Best Actor (The Revenant) wearing a Giorgio Armani tuxedo
Leo with bestie Kate (had to add this in)
Henry Cavill – he’s still Superman, even in a tux
Jared Leto in a Gucci suit – and a rose instead of a bowtie. Only Jared can do this.
Michael Fassbender in a Tom Ford tuxedo
Sam Smith, Best Original Song (Spectre) wearing a Dunhill tuxedo (and bearing an uncanny resemblance to Jude Law)
Lady Gaga in a Bandon Maxwell design (and the best of both worlds: pants + dress)
Sofia Vergara in a Marchesa gown (and the very definition of va-va-voom)
Priyanka Chopra in a Zuhair Murad embroidered lace gown
Chrissy Teigan wearing a Marchesa gown with husband John Legend
Matt & Luciana Damon, both wearing Versace (don’t they look like the sweetest couple?)
Naomi Watts with husband Live Schreiber (who can also double as the perfect bodyguard)
Sly Stallone & Jennifer Flavin (giving her best Angelina leg pose), both in Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane
Wrapping up this year’s Oscars, I have a few favourites; Cate Blanchett’s Armani gown was beyond breathtaking and brought to mind a colony of butterflies about to take flight (sounds odd, but think of the imagery). J-Law’s newly blondified locks totally rocked the red carpet, while Charlize Theron’s scarlet gown with its dangerously plunging neckline ruled. The men cleaned up beautifully as well (like being in a room stuffed with tuxedo-clad James Bonds), while several baby bumps were proudly on display. At the end of the day, I appreciate all the many components that have gone into getting the look just right – all for that one fleeting moment on the red carpet. Butterflies in flight, I tell you.

Beauty Award win for ommorphia beauty bar
This past November, I entered my blog in a competition sponsored by ‘made in blog‘ to be recognized as one of Canada’s best. In fact, I only realized on November 14th that this particular contest was going on — literally 4 days before registration closed! Making it just under the wire, I didn’t think I stood a chance, especially since most of the other entrants (over 172 in all) had registered weeks before I did.
Once the registration closed, the voting began; round one was open to the public and the top ten blogs with the highest number of votes, would then go on to the next round. To my delighted surprise, mine was voted in as one of the top 10! WHAT?!
The next round was up to a panel of judges, who then narrowed the field down to the top 3 blogs in each category. Drumroll, please…..
ommorphia beauty bar came in 3rd place for Best Beauty Blog in Canada!
To say I was stunned, would be THE UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEAR. I’m still sporting a huge smile on my face! I consider this a huge honour and I’m so proud that all my hard work has not gone unnoticed. Thank you to every single one of you fabulous readers, that took the time to place your votes (insert giant panda hugs to you all, here!). A special thank you also goes out to a very special person: Adina Bodana (of a-england lacquers) for her immense support & for encouraging her followers to vote for me – sending you all my love, cara!

The ommorphia Top 10 Beauty Faves
I was recently tagged with the Top Ten award by the incredibly witty Amy of Gotham Polish, and while I struggled to narrow my list down to just 10 items (it’s like asking a mother to choose between children!), I finally managed to cobble something together….but I did stretch the boundaries a bit, I’m afraid! So without further ado, I bring you the beauty products that make my life that much easier….and beautiful!
When Urban Decay introduced their ‘Naked’ palette last year, it became an instant hit and has now achieved icon/cult status…with good reason. The twelve shades run the gamut between neutral, light, shimmery and dark….enough for as many looks as I can come up with, and all I need when travelling.
There is only one foundation/base I have hit pan with…twice, as a matter of fact, and that is the MAC Studio Fix powder in C4. Convenient, portable, blends seamlessly with my skin tone, long-lasting, not to mention available in tons of shades…it’s my anchor!
Limited edition for Summer 2011, Dior Diorskin Nude Glow Healthy Glow Summer Powder in ‘Sunset’ (what a mouthful!) is magical; finely milled powder in a multi-shade latticework pattern with the most subtle and almost microscopic shimmer gives my skin a soft & natural sun-kissed appearance and only seems to develop even better with wear. LOVE this. (Note to self: buy a back-up).
Of course, it would be remiss of me if I didn’t include THE perfect brush for applying the above mentioned bronzing powder, and that would be the Sephora I.T. Round Powder Brush from their professional high-end line, made with the softest goat hair. Wonderful density yet with a wide enough surface and a long tapered handle for precision control, it helps my bronzer apply with the most realistic “faux glow”. The beach already misses me …
The Shu Uemura eyelash curler is the gold standard; a perfectly shaped curve forms easily around my eye using a protective rubber pad (which includes a refill) as it gently curls my lashes…this tool is not only an instant eye opener but sets the stage for long-lasting, curled lashes. How did I manage before this?
Once I’ve curled my lashes (see above!), the Giorgio Armani Eyes To Kill Intense mascara in black is what I’ll be wanting to put on them; this gives my lashes length, volume and curl, no smudging or flakiness, a deep, deep black shade with an almost waterproof finish (it passed the “my daughter’s prom/mom crying hysterically” test with flying colours!), and has now replaced my former mascara, Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes Mascara, as my new fave.
I have come to depend on primers for flawless eyeshadow application, and since I discovered this last year, the NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base is my secret weapon. An initial milky appearance on a soft & spongy doe-foot wand, a little goes a long way as it applies clear and dries fairly quickly. With my makeup applied over this, my look stays on with an iron will until I remove it many hours later. Another product I’ve already bought twice…what does that say?!
CHANEL Stylo Yeux Waterproof in Ébène has got to be hands down my favourite black eyeliner…EVER. It holds so well when used on the waterline that even 4 hours later, I don’t need to check and see if it’s still there. It won’t smudge or pill in the corner of my eyes (hate that) and the best part? It’s retractible so I need never worry about the cap falling off and the eyeliner tip doodling all over my purse/makeup bag, etc.
I’m always on the lookout for that perfect lip balm; one that won’t cause peeling, or has a waxy feel, that tastes good and is emollient with lasting results. Enter Khiel’s Lip Balm #1 in Vanilla with it’s light almost slippery formula, very subtle vanilla scent (it also comes in many other yummy scents – my daughter has it in coconut!) which gives my lips some much needed moisture with a light shine, and no nasty after-effects.
I love lip glosses for their ease of use (no mirror required to apply!) but hate how quickly they fade. CHANEL Glossimer #151 Aragonite from the Spring 2011 collection, manages to be many sided: neutral enough to go with everything but the multi coloured shimmer reflects subtle colour, lasts for hours and when it does finally begin to fade, it still leaves a slight glow behind. Awesome, awesome product…I now need to get another one, as you can clearly see!
Of course, as a good chunk of my beauty life revolves around nail polish, I have been hunting down the perfect building blocks: a-england’s The Knight base coat and The Shield top coat (also reviewed here) not only deliver, but have proven to be far superior to anything else available. While The Shield is slightly slower drying than Sèche Vite, it causes no polish shrinkage, stays super glossy even with moisturizer constantly slapped over my hands & nails and holds like iron….even 7 days later. Perfection.
Honourable Mention: I can’t end my list without giving props to a few other items that I have come to rely on, namely several Moroccanoil products beginning with the Moisture Repair Shampoo and Conditioner, Neutrogena’s Oil Free Eye makeup Remover which effortlessly and gently removes even my tenacious waterproof mascara, and finally my collection of makeup brushes that I lovingly take care of thanks to Laura Mercier’s gentle & thorough Brush Cleanser.
I know I was supposed to stick to just 10 items, but even paring it down to this, I feel like I achieved the impossible! Apart from playing around with numerous beauty products and getting the chance to put my opinions down for all to see, another reason I love blogging is because it has given me the opportunity to exchange thoughts and meet so many other interesting and fabulous bloggers all around the world. So I now pass the baton along to 10 other bloggers, but I’m switching it up a bit (I know…taking liberties again!) by tagging not just beauty afficionados, but bloggers who I find really interesting and hope you do too! After all, beauty is for everyone, right?
