BB Couture ‘Saints of Ruin’ Collection
BB Couture may not be on everyone’s speed-dial, but it should; with a formula that boasts colour, base & top coats, as well as a nail strengthener inside, each shade is also made with natural pearl for an extra special luminosity. Another little known fact is their unisex appeal, as there are shades targeted but not limited to, men. Then there’s the fact of the quality of this formula … superb, comes to mind.
Based in California, BB Couture draws their inspiration for each collection from myriad sources; this particular collection was created for the goth band ‘Saints of Ruin’, where the shades were also worn by the band members. Since I don’t know anything at all about goth bands, I’ll focus on these luxurious hues instead!
All swatches are with base coat; top coat only where indicated.

Glampyre – a deep olive/bronze shimmer filled hue with antique gold overtones. With an excellent formula, opacity & natural gloss, there’s a “tiger’s eye” look to this rich & luxurious beauty. Coats applied: 2 plus top coat

Ashes – a charcoal/eggplant complex hue with ultra-fine silvery shimmer, some sparse pink shimmer, and a subtle duo chrome-like effect that’s seen more in the bottle than on the nail, although there appears to be a greenish halo-like effect in certain lighting. Self-levelling and glossy, the shimmer is two-tiered and multi-dimensional. Coats applied: 2 plus top coat

Dark Tommy – an intensely brooding grape jelly hue – both in colour/tone and consistency. The formula was a touch on the thick side with a spring-back effect, although still very easy to work with. The brown undertones in the base give this shade the look of the darkest chocolate, very decadent. Note that the swatches below are WITHOUT top coat – it’s THAT insanely glossy! Bonus: non staining upon removal. Coats applied: 2

Fairytale – a jewel-like sapphire blue with deep indigo hints and an ultra-fine silvery shimmer throughout. Brush stroke-free, shiny, self-levelling and with a formula that applies like silk, there was no staining upon removal. Coats applied: 2

Ruby Ruin – the deepest port-wine shade I’ve seen and in a jelly formula similar in density and flow to ‘Dark Tommy’, this ultra pigmented blackened red applies in a totally smooth manner, leaving nothing but this mirror like shine behind. There could be some very minimal staining, so don’t skip the base coat. Note: NO topcoat needed or applied here either! Coats applied: 2

Nightmare – an intensely deep blackened garnet filled with red glass-like fine shimmer, that appears to glow from just under the nail surface; think of banked & glowing embers – an unbelievable effect. Self-levelling, major colour saturation, and an ultra-high gloss thanks to the jelly formula, this non-staining beauty benefits from top coat for the smoothest surface. Coats applied: 2

Final thoughts: I don’t know this band, and so the significance of the names on each shade eludes me; what I do know, however, is that each & every varnish comes in BB Couture’s trademark amazing formula. Ruby Ruin reminded me very much of a-england’s ‘Lancelot’ (reviewed here), although they differ in formula. The glow that ‘Nightmare’ gives off is nothing short of spectacular, and must be seen in person to be appreciated. I understand that Glampyre was added almost a year later to this collection, and there appears to be one more shade – which I do not have to show. Yes, I know that we’re already seeing Spring & Summer collections, but it’s still winter and darker shades rule!

BB Couture: Fall 2011 ‘Eye Candy’ Collection – The Ladies (swatches & review)
BB Couture, an incredibly innovative brand that beats to its own drum, has released twelve new shades for Fall 2011: the “Eye Candy Collection”. Their unique twist is in how the collection is usually divided into two sets – men’s & women’s, the latter which I’m reviewing here today. These six shades all bear a shimmery secret; some seductively flaunting their assets, while others coyly reluctantly so. All swatches were done using Seche Base Ridge Filling Base Coat, two coats of lacquer (with the exception of ‘Trim & Tassled’ that I’m showing in both two and three coat versions), and Revlon Quick Dry Top Coat.
My version of “eye candy”… sweaty, dirty, buff, half-naked firefighters. Enough said!!
‘Feathered Vixen’ is one of the truest purple shades I’ve ever come across, leaning neither too blue nor too red. The silvery shimmer swimming deep inside is ultra fine and well dispersed through the polish, and while the hue itself appears almost crème-like in more subdued lighting, you can still catch tantalizingly shining glints when light reflects off the surface. The formula was thin and easily spreadable, giving a wonderful opacity at two coats, and had the benefit of being quite self-levelling and ultra glossy as well.
With full sun shining on this shade, it seems to pop with a vivid violet burst of colour, while the clearly visible shimmer dances quietly in the background, never overpowering.
Indirect lighting definitely cools down this shade and gives its inner shimmer a more secondary role, yet the colour never strays too far from its true purple base.
A view in shaded light lends ‘Feathered Vixen’ an almost grape-like tone, and now appears to be more blue based, yet still so richly pigmented.
A final view taken with flash shows the base colour to lean more towards lavender, while the shimmer really come into its own here.
‘Scorching Strawberry’, a blue based mid range pink with exceptionally subtle silver shimmer in its depths, has the look of a decadent fruit smoothie. The formula was amazing, being not only self-levelling, but bearing an intense glossy finish. Two coats were all that were needed to achieve full opacity, and while I don’t usually favour pink hues, something about this shade just makes me smile!
Seen in full sun, the hot pink side of ‘Scorching Strawberry’ appears somewhat subdued and dusty looking, lending it a lovely romantic aura. Note how you catch only the barest hint of any shimmer within.
When viewed in indirect light, this shade now takes on a bubble-gum pink tone, while definitely appearing more cool toned.
Shaded light lends a warmer air to this shade and serves to highlight the high gloss shine, while the shimmer becomes just a whisper.
A final view taken with flash lighten’s ‘Scorching Strawberry’s’ base shade to a vivid girly pink hue, with the shimmer harmonizing perfectly from within.
‘Junk In The Trunk’ is like nothing else in my arsenal of lacquers; a dusty yet also paradoxically vivid cyan blue, it’s just loaded with silver micro shimmer, giving it such an incredible depth. This formula was not only spot-on like the rest, but also intensely saturated in colour – so much so, that it could easily be a one-coater if applied slightly thicker.
A view in full sun highlights the intense sky blue tone of this polish, and while the shimmer is quite densely packed within, it compliments the base shade so beautifully.
Seen in indirect lighting, ‘Junk In The Trunk’ now appears more cool toned, while this light gives the shimmer a “just-floating-under-the-surface” appearance.
I love how shaded light adds a mantle of mystery over this shade, lending it more sophisticated touch, yet still enhancing its cerulean blue core.
Another way to fully appreciate the almost electric beauty of this shade, is to be seen with flash; that’s where the shimmer really comes out to play…so stunning!
‘Busty Bombshell’ is utterly sublime; a muted olive green base hue, it is made all the more unique by a foil like finish as well as the ultra fine holographic particles floating throughout, winking at you so seductively. The formula almost applied itself, it was that smooth, and its self-levelling capacity means no brush strokes will be left behind. The final result was more of a semi-gloss finish compared to the others, but easily adjusted with a layer of top coat.
When seen in sunlight, ‘Busty Bombshell’ appears to have an almost verdigris patina about it, possibly due to the green specks found throughout the base hue.
In this closeup photo, the golden sheen given off by the base shade is the perfect backdrop for the brilliant shimmer that fills this polish…absolutely mesmerizing!
The cooler appearance of this lacquer when seen in indirect light, adds a an element of sophistication to its now more muted mossy green hue.
It is this view seen in shaded light, that not only brings ‘Busty Bombshell’ back to a warmer level, but spotlights the spectacular surface effect of the holographic particles.
A final view taken with flash not only displays the incredible depth of tone this shade has, but reminds me of the rich & golden burnished threads found in beautifully crafted tapestries.
‘Sweet Silicone’ is a vivid aqua hue, made all the more interesting by the addition of ultra fine blue shimmer. This shade had the thickest formula of them all, but was still easily spreadable, as well as leaving a wonderfully smooth application behind. While not as glossy as most of the others in this collection, it had the quickest dry time of the group, as well as the added benefit of being completely non-staining….a definite plus when dealing with this colour family.
It is when seen in direct sunlight that one can appreciate the intense oceanic leanings of this shade, with the shimmer glinting like light off the distant waves.
Once more, indirect light lowers the temperature of this polish to a deeper Tiffany Box blue tone, with the reflected glints adding such visual appeal.
Shaded light, and ‘Sweet Silicone’ takes on an utterly hypnotic jewel-like semblance. The depth of tone found in this view is unparalleled and I love how this lighting adds a luxuriant emerald cape over the entire look.
A final view taken with flash gives this shade an almost candy-like vibe, with the shimmery aqua colour playfully lightened in tone.
‘Trim & Tassled’ is the sultry siren of the bunch, with the violet base playing host to a multitude of ultra fine multi-coloured and holographic glitter pieces scattered throughout. Definitely the sheerest formula of the collection, I appreciated how this finish gives so many options – you can apply it as thick or as thin as you like, or even layer it over another base hue to create an entirely new look. While never fully opaque even at three coats, it nevertheless had a fabulous formula, as smooth to apply as the rest, and the best part? No staining and a very easy removal (for a glitter!). The following swatch photos are shown with both two coats, directly followed by a three coat photo.
While my nail line is quite visible in this sunlight photo, there’s still enough opacity to showcase the lovely violet base hue of this shade, with the glitter clearly prominent.
At three coats and in full sun, everything becomes significantly denser, from the deeper purple base hue, to the multitude of starry glitter shining forth.
Seen at close range, the blue based leanings of ‘Trim & Tassled’ are revealed, with the spotlight remaining firmly on the glitter.
This closeup shot (with three coats) intensifies the base shade to a regal purple colour and brings out the more bluer particles to the forefront.
When seen in indirect light, this shade now appears more “grape jelly”-like as well as cooly muted in tone.
I love how at three coats, indirect light bathes ‘Trim & Tassled’ with a delicate twilight aura, gently encompassing the nails.
This view in shaded light appears to not only add more warmth to the overall shade, but drapes it with a unique and almost eerie blueish tinge.
I am in awe of how this view of three coats in shaded light, transforms this shade to the celestial appearance of the cosmos….totally captivating!
A final view taken with flash, but at two coats, lightens the base colour of this polish to a vivid lavender, and also serves to give off an almost playful vibe.
This final three coat flash view, shows off the exceptional holographic magnificence of the glitter, and emphasizes all the elements that make this lacquer not only visually stimulating, but so incredibly unique.
Final thoughts: The six polishes that make up the women’s half of this collection, are an eclectic range of colours to be sure, but in a world where its hard to find new and unheard of colours, it was refreshing to see BB Couture’s take on a Fall collection. As previously stated above, the formula on all was totally amazing, with a long, tapering yet flexible brush that has just enough “give” for goof-proof application. I need to mention here that the awesome Cindy, the woman behind BB Couture, wished to send me these shades herself but due to shipping restrictions, was unable to. Along came Kim Snyder of the fabulous online e-store Overall Beauty, to generously offer to assume the shipping responsibilities. Not only was this unprecedented, but it is highly indicative of the person Kim is and her wonderfully generous nature. She offers the same attention to detail to every single one of her customers, and if you haven’t visited her site yet, then I strongly urge you to hop over there and check it out, as well as join her on twitter! BB Couture’s ‘Eye Candy’ Collection is the perfect way to indulge…without any hazardous side effects!

BB Couture – A Touch of Greece part 2 ‘The Gods’ (swatches & review)

A few days ago, I showed you ‘The Goddesses’ (reviewed here), half of BB Couture’s summer 2011 collection; today, I bring you ‘The Gods’. What’s so unique about these six shades, is that while they were created for men (yes…some men actually DO wear nail polish!), they are also colours that will be highly coveted by women. Slightly dusty in tone, and all rather creamy looking (with the exception of one shade), these are all highly wearable and modern colours, infused with such a depth of pigment. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I look forward to having these ‘Gods’ at my fingertips! All swatches were done using Sèche Clear base coat and two coats of lacquer, no top coat.
Just like I did with ‘The Goddesses’, I begin my review with the first three gods, as well as their historical references: ‘Hades’ (pronounced “ah-thees” in Greek) is known as the god of the underworld, ruler of the dead as well as the king of all the hidden wealth of the earth. ‘Eros’ (pronounced “eh-ros” in Greek), portrayed in some myths as the child of ‘Aphrodite’, is the god of love. Also known as ‘Cupid’ by the Romans, he is always depicted with a bow, flinging arrows of love into the hearts of men & gods/goddesses alike. Lastly, there is ‘Uranus’ (pronounced “ou-ra-nos” in Greek) one of the primal deities in mythology and the god of the sky, consort to ‘Gaia’, the goddess of the earth.

Stripped of life giving colour, ‘Hades’ is represented by this muted shade of tan. What’s interesting is that even though this is a crème shade, there is the tiniest, almost hidden swirls of silver micro shimmer in its depths, as well as some random darker specks giving this hue a new and fresh twist. There also seems to be a tinge of yellow in the base, lending this colour a nice warmth which should make it wearable across a variety of skin tones. I love how sunlight (top photo) brings out the shimmer, while shaded light (bottom photo) lends it a more neutral coolness.

Reminiscent of burgeoning love, ‘Eros’ is a truly lovely pale celadon green hue. Slightly dusty looking, this polish also has that mysteriously fine silvery shimmer swimming in its base, lending it a beautiful richness of depth. Upon enlarging the photos, you will also notice similar random black flecks (like with ‘Hades’) as well as a few dots of yellow here and there, which makes this polish so different from other similar shades. This is a chameleon hue, which goes from warm to cool depending on the light and I feel it will also transition beautifully from one season to the next.

Get the snickers out of the way over the name, especially now that you know how to properly pronounce it! ‘Uranus’ is one of those colours that either you’ll hate or love; I personally love it, as I find that it is totally unique in my stash. A rich mustard shade when viewed in full sun (top photo), it cools down to a caramel toffee hue in shaded light (bottom photo). The only thing that breaks up some of that creamy look, is the random yellow flecks floating in this polish, which only adds to its uniqueness in my opinion. Like melted Kraft Caramel squares on your fingertips….yummy!
The next three gods to appear, begin with ‘Apollo’ (pronounced “a-po-lon” in Greek), a multi purpose deity, who is best known for being the god of prophecy & oracles. Among his other accomplishments, he is also revered for being the patron god of healing, music, song & poetry, archery, as well as the protector of the young. ‘Ares’ (pronounced “ah-rees” in Greek), is not only famous for being the god of war, but for representing battlelust as well as manly courage. Finally, we come to ‘Plutus’ (pronounced “plou-tos” in Greek), the god of wealth who has also come to represent the rich bounty of harvests, thanks to his mother being Demeter, another goddess of the earth.

The creamiest shade in this set, ‘Apollo’ is also the brightest hue of the six shown here. A luscious but somewhat muted looking tangerine shade, it instantly reminded me of the orange creme-sickles of my youth, those melt-in-your-mouth frozen treats that we couldn’t resist! I love how even though this is a vibrant colour, it still has enough of a dusty tone to it that doesn’t scream ‘neon’ and which will make it a standout shade for a summertime pedi. Can’t you just picture this with lightly tanned skin and glorious strappy sandals? (heels or gladiators…take your pick!)

Like looming stormclouds portending battle, ‘Ares’ is a contradiction as far as summer hues are concerned, but I absolutely love the sophistication of this polish. The only shade out of the six with obvious shimmer, it also has those random black flecks floating throughout its base, but which are not so easily seen on the nail. This is a deep and gorgeous blue based grey hue, with tons of silver micro shimmer swirling about and I love how elegant it makes your hands look. Sunlight truly does bring out the shimmer (top photo) but shaded light (bottom photo) shows you its simmering depth…..stunning!

Money, moolah, greenbacks…whatever term you use, the green of ‘Plutus’ has come to symbolize wealth. The most obvious summery colour of the set, this is a contradiction of a bright yet muted grass green hue, with random yellow flecks floating in its base. Because of its slightly yellowish tinge, it has a rich warmth to it and I like how regardless of the light, it nonetheless stays a true primary green shade. Such a happy hue!
Final thoughts: The twelve lacquers that comprise this entire collection are a wonderfully eclectic mix of summery shades, giving you a great choice among crèmes, shimmers, glass-flecked glitters, sheers and even a duochrome. BB Couture lacquers are free of all harmful toxins and are also animal-cruelty free, as well as made with added natural strengtheners; form & substance! The formula is simply outstanding, starting with an easy to use tapered brush, to a self-levelling application, super fast dry time, and ending with a wonderful glossy shine. Being insanely proud of my Greek heritage (we did invent practically everything, you know!!), how could I fail to be anything other than impressed by the inspiration behind this collection, I ask you?! BB Couture – A Touch of Greece ‘The Goddesses’ (swatches & review)
For Summer 2011, BB Couture has created a historically rich and lusciously hued collection of lacquers aptly titled ‘A Touch of Greece’. This collection is available in two formats: ‘The Goddesses’ or women’s polishes (identified by the round bottle shape) and ‘The Gods’ or men’s polishes (identified by the square bottle shape). Today I present ‘The Goddesses’, six beautiful jewel tones with varying degrees of shimmer in their base, and all infused with natural pearl for extra luminosity. This collection strikes close to my heart as I am a proud Greek-Canadian gal and I confess to being so totally drawn to every single one of these shades, not only for the highly saturated tones, but for the names! Who wouldn’t want to have goddess worthy nails?! All swatches are with Sèche Natural base coat and two coats of lacquer, no top coat.
I begin my review with the first three goddesses, along with their historical reference: ‘Gaia’, (pronounced “yee-ah” in Greek) is also known as the earth mother, the primeval female divinity in Greek mythology, of whom all the Titans and most Gods sprang from. Well known for her incredible beauty as well as her legendary rise from the ocean, ‘Aphrodite’ (pronounced “af-ro-thee-tee” in Greek) is the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and procreation. ‘Nike’ (pronounced “nee-kee” in Greek), is the winged goddess of victory, both in battle and in peaceful competitions.
‘Gaia’ is a medium toned green hue, resembling the promise of the earth’s re-awakening into Spring. This is a lovely celadon green shade and the incredibly delicate green shimmer in its base, along with the natural pearl, lend it a beautifully reflective shine. Wonderful opacity with just two coats, it has a fresh feeling to it whether seen in sunlight (top photo) or indirect light (bottom photo) and I’m certain will go with all skin tones.
Of course, ‘Aphrodite’ would have to be a deep rose, the hue of thoroughly kissed lips. This is deep pink shade with a silvery shimmer in its base, and it has the most incredible pearly finish. Note how full sun (top photo) lends it such warmth, while indirect light (bottom photo) gives it a much cooler cast, although the shimmer is still visible in any light it’s viewed in.
‘Nike’ is a decadent mauve shade, managing to be dark and vibrant at the same time. This is a grape hued purple, with the same silvery shimmer swimming in its depths as well as some very fine purple particles. This shade instantly reminded of the grape Pop-Sicles I absolutely loved as a child, and it bears the same lusciously cool vibe. Seen in full sun (top photo) brings out a slight reddish hue, while indirect light (bottom photo) lends it a bluer and cooler finish….delish!
The next three goddesses of this collection begin with ‘Hemera’ (pronounced “ee-me-rah” in Greek), the primeval goddess of day who each morning dispersed night’s mists and bathed the earth in the light of the cosmos. ‘Cybele’ (pronounced “kee-ve-lee” in Greek) is a Phrygian Goddess originally, but was known in Greek mythology as “Rhea” and as the primal goddess of nature. Lastly, ‘Selene’ (pronounced “suh-lee-nee” in Greek) was the Titan Goddess of the moon, and the sister to the god ‘Helios’ (the sun) who represented the gentle rays of moonlight that bathed the earth at night.
Like the breaking light of dawn, ‘Hemera’ is a sweet caress of colour. A cross between salmon pink and coral, this also bears subtle gold and silver shimmer in its depths, along with that pearlescent lustre giving it such richness of hue. The high saturation of colour is visible regardless of lighting conditions, and I absolutely love how it gleams with an inner fire. Hands down, my favourite of the six and what will surely be a hot summer shade!
‘Cybele’ is not only the most mysterious shade out the bunch, but the most elusive to properly capture. An interesting duochrome polish, which can appear either pink, brown, or olive green, this shade has a fascinating mix of greenish-gold glass like flecks in its base, as well as tons of pearly shimmer swirling through it and while the bottle shade appears dense, it is surprisingly sheer, but so wearable once applied. Never fully opaque even at two coats, it nonetheless imparts a delicate wash of colour to your nails and note how whether seen in full sun (top photo) or indirect light (bottom photo) your nails seem to be covered in starshine….a true original!
Finally, we have ‘Selene’, a deep true pink. This is a more blue based shade than ‘Aphrodite’, and much like ‘Cybele’, seems to have the same type of glass flecks but in gold and pink strewn throughout, giving it such a unique appearance and otherwordly depth. Seen in full sun (top photo), there’s a slight lavender cast to it while indirect light (bottom photo) brings out a more pearly side to this hue. A truly modern take on a dainty pink shade and will surely be a fab pedi shade this season!
Final thoughts: For those unfamiliar with this line of polishes, I can sum them up in one word: SUPERB. Not only are the shades so richly pigmented, requiring just two coats for full opacity (with the exception of ‘Cybele’), but the formula was perfect in flow, the brush thin & flexible (my favourite!) an amazing spreadability, quick dry time and quite glossy at the finish. I love how these polishes are not only free from all harmful toxins, but that this is a “4-in-one formula” which includes base coat, top coat, nail strengtheners and the lacquer itself (although I always swatch with base coat regardless). I found all six of these shades highly wearable and so lovely to look at, and now the gauntlet has been thrown to see if the ‘Gods’ can match the ‘Goddesses’! Stay tuned for the second part of my review on this collection to find out! BB Couture nail polishes retail for US $9.95 and can be purchased through the company’s website here.

BB Couture – Posse & Outlaw (swatches, review & comparison)
I recently had the opportunity to try my first ever BB Couture polishes, and the shades I’m showing you today are ‘Posse’ – a shimmery olive green and ‘Outlaw’ – a deep plum with shimmer, both from the 2011 Wild West Collection. What I find so unique about this range, is how every collection of theirs is divided into two parts: the men’s and women’s groups respectively. Why men’s, you ask? Well, when the good folks at BB Couture wondered if men would be willing to wear colour on their nails, other than clear, they were surprised to learn that the answer was…yes! Therefore, a men’s line was born, which can be worn by both genders, and certainly vice versa for the women’s group of shades, if one so wishes. All swatches are with Sèche Natural base coat and two coats of lacquer, no top coat.
‘Posse’ is a richly pigmented olive green shade, with such fine & densely packed golden, green and some pink shimmer, that it seems to literally glow, especially when seen in the sun (top photo). I found it interesting that indirect light (bottom photo) seemed to bring out a silvery sheen to this hue. Application was amazing; fully opaque in two coats, streak-free, self levelling and quick drying…what’s not to love?
I thought I had several matches for ‘Posse’, but it turns out that the closest I had was Rescue Beauty Lounge’s ‘Anne’ (from the Tudor Dynasty Collection reviewed here). While they both have an almost identical base tone, the main differences between the two is that ‘Anne’ is just a smidge deeper and seems to bear significantly more pink shimmer, which can easily be seen whether in full sun (top photo) or in indirect light (bottom photo). I absolutely love ‘antiqued’ looking polishes like these!
‘Outlaw’ is deep, luscious and definitely overtly sexy! This is a saturated plum shade, with red and some golden fine shimmer in its depths, giving it a unique cast. It’s a vampy shade without veering into black, and I love how it stays true to it’s purple tone whether seen in full sun (top photo), or in indirect light (bottom photo), making it modern, never goth. As with ‘Posse’, application was a dream, with no brush strokes in sight and a lovely gloss finish, even without a top coat added.
Once more, the only polish in my stash that came remotely close to ‘Outlaw’s’ tapestry-like colour, was Rescue Beauty Lounge’s ‘Catherine’ (from the Tudor Dynasty Collection, reviewed here). While they both have a deep plum base in common, the differences here are that ‘Catherine’ is a dustier looking mauve-y purple with pink and green shimmer in its base, making ‘Outlaw’ look more of a red based deep purple, infusing it with such a regal gleam.
Final thoughts: While only two shades out of the collection of twelve, I am nonetheless so impressed…and not only with the colours themselves, which are rich and unique, but with the high quality of the formula, the application and the wonderful brush as well. These hues may be more suited for the Fall/Winter months, but there’s no denying how elegant and sophisticated they make your nails look. BB Couture nail lacquers can be purchased through their website and retail for US $9.95
