Charlotte Tilbury · The Legendary Muse Palette & Black Diamonds Colour Chameleon, Holiday 2016

ct-legendary-muse-black-diamonds-opener

For Holiday 2016, Charlotte Tilbury has released several gift sets at varying price points; one such item is The Legendary Muse Eyeshadow Palette that is not only filled with four party-ready shades, but comes adorned with a festive star pattern on the lid. A new discovery for me is this Black Diamonds Colour Chameleon, a combination of smokey, sexy, sophisticated, and glam all housed in once pencil. Sounds almost too good to be true, right? It’s not.

ct-legendary-muse-palette-1

The Legendary Muse Luxury Palette, limited edition (CAN $64.00) | Four eyeshadow shades bearing varying degrees of shimmer (and one with glitter), housed in the brand’s signature deep burgundy & rose gold compact but prettied up for the holidays with a star pattern on the lid. The shade breakdown:

  • top left – rose gold, shimmer
  • top right – champagne gold, satin shimmer
  • bottom left – gold with ultra fine glitter
  • bottom right – peach/rose/gold, satin shimmer

Right on point with the rose gold trend that’s still going strong in both fashion and cosmetics, this palette is perfect for those who want a little bit of glamour to their look but still want it to be utterly wearable. All four hues apply smoothly and blend flawlessly with no fall down, although it should be noted that the gold shade is not as opaque as the rest due to its ultrafine glitter, but is made even lovelier because of that since you can almost ‘control’ the bling factor better — or even layer it over other shades to add a touch of sparkle. Staying power (over primer) is excellent, staying true until removed.

ct-black-diamonds

Black Diamonds Colour Chameleon (CAN $32.00) | An eyeliner pencil in a chubby stick format in a deep charcoal hue filled with finely ground silvery/gold glitter. The texture is incredibly creamy, which means it will apply easily and without any harsh tugging along the sensitive skin of your eyes. Once applied, you do have about a minute or so to smudge/blend it out; after that, it’s basically set in stone. What makes this standout for me, is the good ratio of glitter in the mix that gives a lift to what would otherwise be a run-of-the-mill blackened liner. NOTE: not to be applied to the waterline.

Shimmer aside, this palette didn’t initially feel very ‘holiday’ to me at first glance, but after swatching and playing around with some looks — then going in and adding Black Diamonds for definition and depth, I’m actually really loving the more subtle take on holiday bling The Legendary Muse provides. And while it may lean a little warm, the shades are not so scary pigmented that those with fair complexions can’t pull them off – it’s all a matter of application proportions. After all, makeup should be about fun & experimentation and there’s no better time than the holidays to do both! It’s almost law, in fact …

CHANEL SS/17 · Codes Subtils, Noir Pétrole, Libre & Noir Moderne

chanel-coco-codes-eyes-lips-opener

Last post was all about cheeks; today’s focuses on eyes and lips with a few more selections from the CHANEL Coco Codes Collection for Spring/Summer 2017 (it’s crazy to even contemplate Spring — or even Summer right now, but that’s the beauty industry for you). What makes everything here so unique, in my honest opinion, is the utter wearability of each and every hue and even though I don’t mind stirring things up from time to time with pops of unexpected colour, there’s something comforting about going with standby favourite shades. Especially when they’re all such amazing performers … along with sporting those alluring double C’s.

Previously reviewed from this collection:

“My favourite time to wear Rouge Coco Shine Noir Moderne is in the Spring. I like the idea of a shade of black. I also wanted elements of comfort in the collection – beauty is not just about artifice” ∼ Lucia Pica

chanel-code-subtils-new

Les 4 Ombres 278 Codes Subtils, limited edition (CAN $68.00) | One of two eyeshadow quads released with this collection (the other being 275 Codes Élégants), this one somewhat softer-leaning with shades that can be used to create a subtle look for day, or amped up for evening by applying them with a dampened brush.

  • top left – shimmering rose/peach
  • top right – platinum bronze/taupe
  • bottom right – warm intense pewter (with a strong olive undercurrent)
  • bottom left – bronzed mid-brown

Ever since CHANEL reformulated their 4 Ombres formula, I have been really impressed with the level of pigmentation and how smoothly the shades apply. This palette is no exception; seen in the swatches below, all have been applied dry and it’s clear that the saturation level is excellent, although using a fluffier brush (and going in with a lighter hand), you can also diffuse each shade for a softer effect. Each has shimmer of varying complexity that lends depth of tone and a subtle radiance, and all display very little powdery kickback when swirling brushes across their surface. Staying power (over primer) is outstanding, with the colours staying true until removed.

chanel-noir-petrole

Stylo Yeux Waterproof 931 Noir Pétrole, limited edition (CAN $35.00) | One of my favourite eyeliner formulas is CHANEL’s Stylo Yeux Waterproof, and while there have been a few misses for me colour-wise, I still fall back on these time and time again. With a smooth application (which means no tugging along the sensitive skin of the eyes) and strong colour saturation per swipe, I get easily 6+ hours of wear — even when applied along the waterline — before needing to touch up.

What makes this shade unique, however, is its intense mossy green base colour which is also a great alternative to wearing straight ip black, made even more special via the bronze glints in its depths. Total ♥!

chanel-libre-noir-moderne

Rouge Allure Velvet 62 Libre (CAN $43.00) | Adding two new shades to the Rouge Allure Velvet roster (61 La Secrète not shown), the finish on this lipstick formula is exactly as the name implies: velvety. Very hydrating in feel throughout the wearing, this rosewood-tinged beige hue is ultra wearable by a broad range of skin tones and provides a touch more colour than a straight up nude would. Makes a perfect swipe-and-go shade too.

Rouge Coco Shine 128 Noir Moderne (CAN $43.00) | Another standout of the collection, this is a wearable version of cult-fave shade Rouge Noir. The sheerness and slip of the formula take the scare factor out of what looks to be an über-vampy hue and turn it into wearable sexy. I’m having a major moment with Noir Moderne and I’m already planning a backup. Seriously.

At the risk of repeating myself, there’s really no other better way to put it than to say that all the pieces I’ve seen of this collection thus far, are all so worth your time to look into when everything launches. Gabrielle Chanel, whose love of these classic codes (red, black, gold, white & beige) was definitely stated, was all about making women feel liberated and empowered; Lucia Pica continues the tradition by delving into the archives and reworking these shades with modern formulas and textures — all while keeping their integrity intact. So well done … #slowclap

Give In Take Dual-Intensity Eye & Cheek Palette, Sephora Exclusive (CAN $85.00) | This Sephora Exclusive palette is absolutely divine and don’t let the price tag scare you off; if purchased individually, the total would be CAN $250.00 so I’d say it’s an amazing deal, especially for NARS. Moving along …

If you’ve yet to try this brand’s Dual-Intensity formula, then you owe it to yourself to check this baby out. Included in the palette are 6 eyeshadow shades and 3 blush hues that can be worn dry for a soft-focus effect (although even dry, the pigmentation is superb) or applied with a dampened brush for mega-intensity. Staying power is impressive and the complex shimmer on all gives a gorgeous multi-tonal depth to each as well.

So…..what do we think? Not a bad looking group, wouldn’t you agree? Each and every set offers something new without any crossover duplicates, and the price point on all is quite reasonable in my opinion, especially when you consider the crazy mark-up us Canadians have to pay for this brand (which reminds me … NARS, why?). Quality-wise, there are no disappointments, as everything delivers and the final perk? With Christmas & the holiday period looming closer every day, each set here would make an AWESOME gift. PS: giving to yourself counts.

NARS x Sarah Moon Collection · Eyeshadow Duos, Kohliners & Eyelashes, Holiday 2016

nars-sarah-moon-eyes-opener

The first thing that struck me about the NARS x Sarah Moon Collection, were the hauntingly beautiful images on the packaging – it’s details like that which get me every single time. But as we all know by now, it’s the actual products that count and on that score, this collection totally delivers. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say that the outside is important to me too …

NARS x Sarah Moon · Indes Galantes & Quai des Brumes Eyeshadow Duos

nars-sarah-moon-indes-galantes-quai-des-brumes-2

NARS consistently puts out amazing eyeshadow duos, both in terms of colour pairings and quality, eyeshadows that I continue to reach for even now. What’s great about both Indes Galantes & Quai des Brumes (apart from the exotic-sounding names) is that the colours are not only wearable, but even interchangeable as well as combinable. Quality wise, the texture on all four colours display an effortless blendability along with excellent colour saturation, and any powdery kickback seen in the pan results in hardly any fallout upon the skin. Staying power on all — over primer — is faultless, staying true without fading.

nars-sarah-moon-quai-des-brumes

Quai des Brumes Eyeshadow Duo, limited edition (CAN $44.00) | The more muted of the two eyeshadow duos (but no less impactful), both shades are in the same colour family:

  • left side – shimmering lavender grey
  • right side – charcoal with golden shimmer flecks (ultra fine and sparse)

nars-sarah-moon-indes-galantes

Indes Galantes Eyeshadow Duo, limited edition (CAN $44.00) | Definitely the duo with the stronger pigmentation, the two shades compliment each other while still managing to stand alone:

  • left side – shimmering deep gunmetal
  • right side – matte plum (burgundy undertone)

Kohliner, limited edition (CAN $32.00) | These eye pencils come in a self-sharpening pen format, although neither is retractible (so make sure you don’t twist them up too high). The texture is soft enough to glide effortlessly without any harsh tugging along the skin, and each displays excellent colour saturation & staying power. Once applied, you have about a minute to work with them for any blending; after that they’re set for the duration (or at least, until removed).

  • Witching Hour – iridescent charcoal
  • Sichuan – rust brown

NARS x Sarah Moon · Numéro 9 & Numéro 10 Eyelashes

nars-sarah-moon-number-9-10-eyelashes-2

Eyelashes, limited edition (CAN $25.00) | I’m not sure if NARS has ever done lashes before, but I’m not surprised to see that both limited edition pairs are superbly crafted, bearing a clear thin seam with a length that should easily fit most eyes, along with being reusable (with proper care). Perfectly in line with the entire theme of the collection, these lashes can provide a lush yet ethereal finishing touch to eyes. Interesting note: the boxes the lashes come in have a magnet along the side, making it easy to keep both together for storage.

  • Numéro 9 – the more delicate & subtle of the two with slightly more length at one end
  • Numéro 10 – a touch more flamboyant, with graduated hair lengths and a longer wing

nars-sarah-moon-number-9-10-eyelashes-3

NARS x Sarah Moon · Numéro 9 & Numéro 10 Eyelashes

I’ll keep this to the point: each item shown here is totally wearable — even the lashes. The formulation of both Indes Galantes and Quai des Brumes is well within the usual NARS standard (excellent), and will suit a broad range of skin tones & eye colours. The pencils apply exactly the way you’d want an eyeliner to, although I’d feel a lot more secure if they were retractible. As to the lashes, they provide understated volume and happen to be quite comfortable to wear, so in a nutshell: all definitely worth checking out.

Guerlain · Shalimar Collection by Natalia Vodianova, Holiday 2016

guerlain-shalimar-collection-2016-opener

Several weeks ago I was honoured to be amongst a select few invited to a special media preview of the Guerlain Shalimar Collection for Holiday 2016 which was held at Restaurant Europea in the heart of downtown Montréal. Discreetly tucked away on de la Montagne Street, the unassuming exterior belies the gastronomic delights we were about to discover, along with the exquisite beauty collection itself. Presented by key members of the Guerlain team along with International Makeup Artist for the brand, Maxime Poulin (whose talent is simply phenomenal), we were given a thorough breakdown of not only the entire collection, but of several other new releases, including Orchidée Imperial Black, the most über-luxurious skincare cream I’ve ever come across, and the newest additions to the Les Exclusifs de Guerlain fragrance range.

The Guerlain holiday release is always one of the season’s most highly anticipated (last year’s version sold out as soon as it hit counters), and the Shalimar Collection which was created by Shalimar face & muse Natalia Vodianova in collaboration with the house’s Creative Director, Olivier Echaudemaison, is no exception — drawing inspiration from Imperial India and one of history’s great love stories, that of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Tahal. Their passion and love for one another has since reached legendary status and when she passed away, her grief-stricken husband dedicated one last homage to her: the creation of one of the seven wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal, a tomb fit for a queen.

I’m going to warn you right now: this post is quite picture-heavy so get comfortable and read on. I’ve begun with the event itself, immediately followed by my review with swatches of the entire collection. I’ve also included the Shalimar full-length video produced by Bruno Aveillan — an absolute must-see for any die-hard romantic. Personally, I can watch this on repeat all day long as it is just so beautifully crafted and visually arresting. Then there’s the divine jewelry worn by Natalia that I’m absolutely lusting after …

*Note that the entire collection is limited edition

Guerlain · Shalimar Collection by Natalia Vodianova, Holiday 2016

guerlain-shalimar-collection

The uniqueness of this collections starts with the intense cobalt blue outer packaging, a  hue that’s also carried throughout the rest of the pieces. Inspired by the colours of India’s precious  metals and stones, blue & gold decorates the detailing of the Météorites container, a design which is reminiscent of elegantly delicate lapis lazuli jewelry boxes. Taking things to the next level, a faux-sapphire cabochon adorns the luxurious Rouge G lipstick, turning this ubiquitous beauty item into a covet-worthy work of art that just begs to be taken out in public. Rounding the collection out is the body & hair spray; delicate, ethereal and the only festive touch you’ll need for the holidays.

guerlain-precious-light-1

Precious Light Pink Pearly Illuminator (CAN $62.00) | A subtle highlighter in a pen format that you click to release the product onto the brush. The shade is a pale pink with pearly reflects and can be used to bring radiance to key points of the face: inner or outer corners of the eye, upper cheekbones, bridge of the nose, brow bone and/or cupid’s bow of the lips. The shade is actually universally wearable due to the complexity of the pearly particles, and should even suit the darkest complexions without appearing ashy.

guerlain-ecrin-shalimar-eyeshadows-1

Écrin Shalimar Precious Eyeshadows, Gold & Sapphire (CAN $51.00) | The two shades of this palette are not only incredibly complex formula-wise, but work in perfect harmony together. The gold has a nice balance of both cool and warm tones, therefore making it workable on a broad range of skin tones, while the sapphire is truly jewel-like with hints of indigo, purple and even a fine blue shimmer thrown in to keep it unique. The texture is incredibly smooth — almost creamy to the touch — and blends beautifully. The colour of both shades, while not initially overly strong, is also easily built up; you can apply either as a sheer wash of colour, or layered for more impact and depth of tone. One thing to note with Guerlain eyeshadows: if you opt to use the shades damp, then you probably won’t be able to go back to using either dry again, as wetting them changes the texture.

guerlain-lor-eyeliner-1

L’Or Eyeliner, Felt Eyeliner Sparkling Gold (CAN $42.0) | A scintillating gold eyeliner with a felt tip for ease of use and precision application. The texture is initially cooling to the touch upon skin (but which dissipates fairly quickly) and you can build up the intensity  for more impact. Apart from using this in place of a traditional eyeliner (i.e.: to line either the upper or lower lash line), you can also apply some to your finger then lightly pat that on the mobile lid for some extra sparkle, or my favourite, along the tips of the outer lashes for a unique glittering touch. There’s about 30 seconds of play time before it sets, because once it does, it’s there until removed. True fact: I swatched a bit on my hand and even after showering, it was still there — how’s that for crazy staying power?

Guerlain Shalimar Collection · Terracotta Terra India Shimmering Bronzing Powder

guerlain-terracotta-terra-india-3

Terracotta Terra India Shimmering Bronzing Powder (CAN $64.00) | There are several facets that make this Terracotta powder stand apart from the brand’s other versions: first up is the indigo outer packaging, followed by the intricate pattern embossed on the powder’s surface. Not meant to be a bronzer in the traditional sense, the hue appears more rose-gold when applied thus turning it into an almost hybrid highlighter/bronzer type of product. That being said, there’s a unique versatility to this shade in the fact that all skin tones can get something out of it: the über-fair can use this as bronzer without fear of overdoing things, it works as a gorgeous highlighter (neither blingy nor ashy) for women of colour, and makes for a gorgeous touch of radiance for just about everyone. The texture is [unsurprisingly] highly refined and blends/buffs into the skin flawlessly, while the product can be worn either as a sheer wash or layered for more depth — all depending on your preferences and the look you’re going for.

821 Rouge Saphir Rouge G Exceptional Complete Lip Care (CAN $61.00) | The epitome of luxury lip colour, if a fairy-tale Indian princess carried a lipstick, then I’m betting this would have been it. The finesse starts with the casing, which here is a gleaming pewter that bears a solid heft to it and adorned with a faux-sapphire cabochon. Popped open, it reveals a mirror — perfect for touch ups and basically made to be pulled out in public to do so (I mean, how could you not?). The shade is a lush scarlet and so incredibly pigmented that you basically get full coverage/opacity from the first swipe. As to the texture, I almost have no words: buttery, velvety, and hands down superior to anything else I’ve ever applied to my lips. Even the staying power is impressive, lasting through eating & drinking with minimal fading, and leaving a beautiful deep-rose stain behind.

Météorites Perles de Légende (CAN $79.00) | I may have an slight obsession with Météorites, begun when I first discovered these little pearls of perfection years ago and saw first-hand the effect they can have on one’s skin. This collection’s iteration is no less amazing; housed in a stunning metal container that bears a design perhaps Peter Carl Fabergé might have imagined, the 3 shades it holds were personally selected by Natalia as they reminded her of ‘the colour of mosaics in Indian palaces’, although there’s more to them than that. The pink hue provides brightness and enhances the complexion with a touch of freshness, the blue shade works to even out the skin, while the golden hues act as subtle illumination and call forth light to the face.  Bearing the brand’s signature violet fragrance, it does dissipate fairly quickly after application and instead of the usual powder puff (which honestly, I never use) the pearls are protected by a foam cover. Slightly more shimmery than any of the Météorites in the permanent range by virtue of the golden pearls, the effect is still delicate enough that you won’t come off as appearing overly glittery. In fact, trying to describe what this powder does is beyond difficult; you basically have to try it to fully understand, but it’s like an invisible veil that somehow magically makes your skin look a zillion times better. The type that will have people asking what you did, because your complexion looks so good.

Souffle D’Or Perfumed Iridescent Body & Hair Powder (CAN $105.00) | The final crowning touch, Souffle D’Or is literally bottled fairy dust. I kid you not.

Imbued with a subtle version of the Shalimar fragrance, this gossamer-light mist is meant to add delicate golden touches to either hair or skin and retains some of the scent long after it’s applied, only to be picked up ever-so-softly with movement. The indigo bottle bears the traditional Shalimar shape and has that Old Hollywood-glam style bulb for applying it with, lending a sensuous boudoir touch to the entire experience. The shimmery bits come in a variety of sizes and while some may fade, others stay behind along with a whisper of scent, just to keep things interesting.

If you’ve made it all the way to this point, then I applaud you for sticking it out but sometimes you just can’t condense something so spectacular in just a few words or pictures. Guerlain is a luxury brand that refuses to comprise on details, and that fact is brilliantly apparent with the Shalimar Collection, a first for Natalia Vodianova who’s been the muse for the Shalimar fragrance range running on 8 years now. This collection has been beautifully curated and nothing has been overlooked, but it does lean on the steep-side price-wise; the lipstick alone is a hefty investment, but I can honestly say that I have never worn anything like it before (and trust me, I’ve worn a lot). Last year’s Météorites had a waitlist a mile long and something tells me that this year’s version will fare the same, especially when you consider that the shade range is so suitable to a much broader complexion range. With the Christmas season and holidays upon us, any one of the pieces here would make an absolutely incredible gift for the beauty-lover on your list … that’s assuming you don’t scoop everything up for yourself first.
