Nicole by OPI | Spring/Summer 2015 Collection preview
In my previous post, I gave you a glimpse into the Elizabeth Arden preview event I had attended – I should have added a ‘stay tuned for more’ at the end of that post, because my day did not actually end there; a couple of hours after that event, I was headed for the airport and along with my hosts, we flew to Toronto to continue the next round of activities – starting with a blogger dinner that took place early evening of that same day.
After checking in at the Thompson Hotel, the car service picked me up and I was brought to Gusto 101 in Toronto, to attend the blogger dinner that officially launched the Nicole by OPI Spring/Summer 2015 Collection (review/swatches to come). Unfortunately, Executive VP & Artistic Director of the brand, Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, had to cancel her attendance at the last minute due to personal reasons (although she was able to make a luncheon on the following day – stay tuned for that post, where I was also able to sit down and chat with her). Despite this unexpected snag, my colleagues and I (along with our wonderful hosts) took advantage of the opportunity to freely mingle & connect, eat endless amounts of food (I swear, the trays just kept on coming), enjoy copious amounts of good wine (naturally), explored the new Nicole by OPI Spring/Summer 2015 Collection at our leisure, and just generally had a great time.
What made the event even more special for me, was in finally meeting so many of the bloggers that I’ve known for some time now but have never actually met in person – in particular, Aire of The Obsessed, who has also recently experienced the loss of a beloved pet, as have I, and with whom I’ve forged a special bond. (Today also happens to be her birthday … Happy Birthday, Aire! ♥)
I hope you enjoy these preview photos of the collection!
PS: If you haven’t already done so, please take a quick moment to vote for my blog by clicking on the ‘Vote for me’ button in the sidebar – last year, ommorphia beauty bar finished up as one of Canada’s top 3 Beauty Blogs, and I’d so love to be able do even better!
I appreciate every ounce of support you all give me – thanks so incredibly much!
Thank you to my wonderful hosts for inviting me to be a part of such an incredible event.

Nicole by OPI | Seize the Summer Collection 2014 (Limited Edition)
The latest capsule collection recently launched from Nicole by OPI, is called Seize the Summer, four limited edition lacquers in vivid, flirty, fun hues – and all perfectly curated to capture the essence of Summer.
Now as those of you who follow me probably already know, I consider myself something of a “colour purist” and that my nail art skills are pretty basic at best, but I just couldn’t help but let some creativity loose with these four beauties – it somehow seemed effortless.
Nicole by OPI | Seize the Summer Collection
Lay it on the Lime – An almost retina-searing lime green hue with strong yellow undertones, in a crème formula that applies exceptionally easily: self-levelling, no pooling at the cuticles, and with a high gloss shine at the finish. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
Nicole by OPI | Lay it on the Lime
The Coral of the Story – A sizzling coral crème hue with pink undertones, in a formula that defines perfection: flow, opacity, and über-glossy at the finish. While this shade teeters on the edge of neon, it doesn’t quite cross over into that territory. Please note that as there could be some staining potential, do NOT skip base coat. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
Nicole by OPI | The Coral of the Story
Leapink for Joy – A Barbie pink crème hue that’s neither too cool nor warm leaning, and which should suit a wide variety of skin tones. One of the most wearable pink shades I’ve come across in a while – especially considering that it’s quite electric-appearing. Another winning formula and with a super glossy finish. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
Nicole by OPI | Leapink for Joy
Shaved Nice – Ultra fine silver & confetti glitter, filled with small white hexagonal pieces, along with medium-sized copper, purple & green hexagonal pieces. There’s a pretty decent opacity reached with 2 coats – especially on short nails, and while the finish bears a light grit feel and winds up semi-matte, there’s a strong reflective brilliance nonetheless. Coats applied: 3 (thin), no top coat buy arava online andnewonlineblo.com/arava.html no prescription
TIP: To eliminate the need for a difficult removal, I strongly recommend applying OPI’s Glitter Off Base Coat first.

Maybe it’s in reaction to the hard Winter we just had, but I find myself strangely drawn to both neon and glitter polishes this year – they just make me smile. With colours as bold as the 3 crèmes of this collection, my personal preference is to wear them as pedi shades, although I’ll make an exception for The Coral of the Story – total love! A glitter bomb like Shaved Nice is taken to a whole other level with its uniquely textured finish and given a rather sophisticated turn at that, while retaining all of its eye-catching properties. Just remember, as with Summer, this collection won’t be around forever – better jump all over these while you can. buy antabuse online andnewonlineblo.com/antabuse.html no prescription

Nicole by OPI – Roughles Collection, Limited Edition
For Spring 2014, Nicole by OPI has just released their ‘Roughles Collection’ (pronounced “ruffles”), four traditional pastel hues with a unique twist. Colour-wise, these four shades are spot on to kick-off the warmer weather, and whether you’re a fan of textured polish or not, they are undeniably sure to draw your attention, but in a more subtle and gentler kind of way.
The formula on all four may be a touch thicker than that of traditional crème lacquers, but still quite easy to work with. One thing you should note is that they all seem to have these “threads” (the textured part, I’m guessing) that may required you to nudge them into place at the nail’s free edge. Other than that, clean up is simple and I love how the formula stays exactly where placed, without pooling or running into the cuticles. If your polish is prone to chipping, I advise running your brush lightly along your nail edge to seal everything in – but no top coat, as that would be totally redundant here. As to removal, be prepared to use a touch of elbow grease.
For the last photo, I tried my hand at creating a rainbow mani using all 4 Roughles, and even though the finished look is a touch chunkier than I was going for, I actually rather like it – not bad for a first attempt, right?!
Nicole by OPI – Roughles Collection
Sand in my Shoe – a buttercup yellow hue (totally reminds me of frothy egg yolks shrugs) with scattered red specks throughout, in a medium-thick formula with excellent opacity & coverage, leaving behind a raised/textured finish. Coats applied: 2
Nicole by OPI Roughles Collection – Sand in my Shoe
I’m Stucco on You – a soft lavender hue with red and blue flecks throughout (which effectively makes this shade both warm AND cool leaning), in a slightly thinner flowing formula than Sand in my Shoe – a highly flattering colour for all skin tones. Coats applied: 2
Nicole by OPI Roughles Collection – I’m Stucco on You
Rock the Look – a cotton candy pink hue with a unique combination of both red and charcoal scattered specks throughout, making this shade lean more cool than warm which in turn keeps it looking more “grown-up”. Coats applied: 2
Nicole by OPI Roughles Collection – Rock the Look
On What Grounds? – a saturated aqua hue (Tiffany Blue? Robin’s Egg Blue?) with navy and some sparser charcoal specks in the base. A super easy formula to work with and in a shade that looks amazing on everyone – LOVE! Coats applied: 2

I have always maintained that I am a “colour purist” and tend to stick to crème hues as personal favourites, but lately I’ve been expanding out of that box and embracing both colour and texture. Still not quite there yet, and I may never have the patience to sit through intricate nail art work, but I can definitely fake it with the help of textured polish. The four shades of Nicole by OPI’s Roughles Collection make me smile and think of Summer days, lemonade stands and staring at clouds (someone wants to be a kid again…)

A luncheon, an interview & an Unveiling: Carrie Underwood for Nicole by OPI
In my previous post, I wrote about the intimate dinner I attended with guest of honour Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, Executive Vice President & Artistic Director, OPI Products Inc. As I was seated beside her at the dinner, we were able to chat at length on a variety of topics but I did leave some questions out on purpose – mainly because I knew I would be seeing her again the very next day at a media luncheon, where the latest collection from Nicole by OPI was to be launched – along with the fact that I would be getting some private one-on-one time with her for an interview.
The luncheon was held at Buonanotte, Toronto, and the entire restaurant was booked & decked out for the event – I got so caught up meeting and talking with so many people, I completely forgot about taking more photos of the venue. With several displays of the upcoming Nicole by OPI Carrie Underwood Collection available for viewing, City TV interviewing Suzi, and mani stations set up for the invited guests, I almost didn’t know where to look first. Once lunch was served, I was whisked away for my mani appointment where there were endless possibilities to choose from; I finally opted for ‘Goodbye Shoes’ – a unique sage/army green crème shade, with not one, but 2 accent nails: a chevron tip on my thumbs done with ‘Color Me Country’ – a creamy Barbie pink & ‘Carrie’d Away’ – a fine golden glitter, and ‘Party Bus’ – a mix of holographic glitters, down one side of my ring fingers. Definitely not looks I would ever usually wear, but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. The only sad note, is that I ended up missing dessert – my absolute favourite part of a meal … and it was my favourite too: Tiramisu. Small price to pay though, right?!
Immediately following my mani (my nails were actually still wet at this point), I was directed towards a secluded table where I was given a few minutes to interview Suzi – while our time was somewhat short, I am nonetheless grateful, as right after the interview, she left to catch a flight. Even pressed for time, she still graciously gave me her full attention and made me feel very welcome.
The following interview has been lightly edited in order to keep this post from becoming ridiculously long (oops – too late!). Also, I should mention that if the questions seem a little random, it’s because I forgot my notes back at my hotel room, and tried to remember it all from memory *palms face.
When you began working with nail polish, did you ever imagine that it would take off the way it has?
“Never. I was hungry and I really had the passion; if there’s one thing my parents taught me, it’s to be passionate about what you do. I sometimes teach branding & marketing at university, and I always tell students that it’s hard work. You must commit and you have to have a certain vision and follow through, even though there may be many bumps along the road”
What do you personally feel about nail polish? Do you enjoy painting your own nails, or would you prefer someone else do them?
“I love it and no, I don’t do my own nails. I think it’s the one service in the beauty industry where client & technician are face to face. There’s something about someone touching your hands – that comforting feeling, like everything is going to be ok – and you have that 30 minutes or up to an hour, where you get a chance to relax, like a mini getaway. I like to say it’s like ‘psycho-a-nail-ysis’!”
I find that we’re in a very innovative & exciting time for nail polish right now. Which direction do you believe these trends are going?
“I believe that all this variety will continue – the shimmers, the glitters and all the textures, but I also see a more retro look coming back, crème shades in many colours, such as mauve, pink and red – all hues from darkest to lightest. I definitely see crème shades coming back for a more classic look, but in a modern way and there’s nothing to stop people from dressing up even a classic look with something fun”
What is it about nail polish, that is just so appealing?
“Colour is very personal to a woman and nail polish allows you self-expression, it can affect your mood, change your look as well as your outlook. You can look at your nails anytime you wish to enjoy the colour – no need to get up and use a mirror for that. We talk and motion with our hands all the time; take a newly engaged girl for example – her fingers are the most important thing where everyone wants to see the ring and by extension, her nails. Nail polish plays a role in so many important events in our lives – starting from when as a young girl, your mother might take you to get your first manicure, to applying nail polish for various social situations, to your wedding day”
What was your first personal experience with nail polish? How old were you?
“I was probably around 16 or 17, a late-bloomer to nail colour, but to this day, I still get that same feeling each time get a manicure from one of the OPI technicians: I always say that my nails look so much better than when I sat down! That’s why we’re still in this business – it’s an uplifting feeling!”
Who is the ‘Nicole by OPI’ woman? Who does this brand cater to?
“She is younger – that’s how this brand was originally designed; for example, someone who probably just got her first job and may not have the disposable income to purchase OPI, but wishes to stay with a trusted brand. This is how we envisioned it”
Are there any specific charitable causes that tie-in with Nicole by OPI?
“We have contributed to many charities since we began, but as OPI is now owned by Coty, we participate in the parent company’s focus, which is to eradicate blood cancers”
Other than the fact that it is an accessible commodity, what do you contribute to the success of nail polish with consumers?
“As you said, it is primarily an affordable luxury, but another aspect is how fashion has embraced nail colour, and I believe that really took it to another level; for the past 5 years at least, designers have been working in tandem with brands to help make nail polish an integral part of their vision”
What are your feelings on fashion designers creating their own lacquer brands?
“You know, I think it shows how important and influential this category really is and how consumers wish to become even more personal with their favourite designers – as an extension of their overall look”
Speaking of designers, is there a specific look or fashion house that you particularly embrace?
“I love Lagerfeld, CHANEL, Givenchy, Céline for her clean lines, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler – I believe that there’s an amazing crop of new talents behind these brands, and their work is so impressive”
Therefore, you believe this tie-in between fashion and nail polish will continue?
“Absolutely. I don’t see this collaboration going away”
What haven’t we seen with nail polish – what’s left unexplored?
“I do believe we’ll be going back to crèmes again, but always keeping the quality in focus; shine, longevity and saturation of colour continue to be important – all qualities first introduced with gel colours. I believe we’ll be looking more towards creating polishes that offer the same benefits of a gel manicure, but without needing to go to the salon to achieve the look – something the consumer can do herself. I think that’s the next trend”
Certain shades, such as blues and reds, can be quite staining – how has this been tackled by OPI and Nicole by OPI?
“To begin with, inferior dyes definitely play a role in these issues. I believe in dealing with reputable manufacturers of such products, in order to avoid this problem in the first place. But as I always say: please apply a base coat first, or even something thicker such as a ridge filler”
Are you ever polish-free?
“Always! At the office, I test things on myself all the time, but leave my nails bare in between”
As a last gesture before leaving, Suzi gifted me with a personally autographed bottle from the upcoming Nicole by OPI Carrie Underwood Collection – a truly lovely keepsake of the entire experience!

I’m still reeling from this entire experience – from meeting Suzi (twice!) and getting the chance to pick her brains (she’s a formidable woman, but so incredibly grounded as well), being wined and dined so lavishly, getting my nails done (I’m definitely too critical to make this a regular habit), to getting the opportunity to also meet two amazing fellow bloggers, Marta & Mary (we sat together at lunch, then capped off the day by heading to Starbucks where we continued our conversation!), this was an incredible experience and I am so grateful to everyone who helped make it all come about – thank you, from the heart! ♥
The Nicole by OPI Carrie Underwood Collection will officially launch at all retailers starting January 2014, but I’ll definitely be showing you my swatches way before then!
homeward bound …
My dinner with Suzi Weiss-Fischmann of OPI
I recently had the pleasure of being invited to Toronto for a very special event – a private dinner with Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, founder of OPI nail lacquers, and presently Executive VP & Creative Director. Along with key members of the host PR firm and two associates of Suzi’s, there were 8 bloggers in attendance, one of which was none other than yours truly.
Upon arriving at the venue, CIBO Wine Bar – an unpretentious eatery in the heart of downtown Toronto, I was almost stunned into incoherence upon learning that I was to be seated next to Suzi – what an incredible honour!
Cocooned in our private dining room, with what seemed like endless trays of food going around the table family dinner-style (I’m sure I must have rolled back to my hotel later on), the conversation flowing, and sets of the upcoming holiday 2013 Selena Gomez for Nicole by OPI lacquer sets in front of us, the night could not have been more perfect … unless you count going back to my luxurious king suite at the Soho Met, an über-chic boutique hotel, with heated marble floors in the palatial bathroom (I want to move in) and Molton Brown body care products. Or maybe the topper was my getting the chance to meet Suzi again the very next day where I was given the opportunity to interview her … but that’s best kept for my next post!

I must confess that meeting Suzi Weiss-Fischmann was definitely something I can now cross off my bucket list; engaging, down to earth, as well as humble – along with being funny, incredibly intelligent, and honourable, are just a few ways to describe this woman. It was my complete honour to have been able to spend this quality time with her, something I’ll cherish forever. A massively huge THANK YOU to everyone who made this dream possible! ♥
Stay tuned for my next post, as I detail my interview with Suzi Weiss-Fischmann.
