Sephora by OPI – Absinthe Makes The Heart

In light of the fact that I still can’t get my hands on CHANEL’s Black Pearl (yet!), I searched through my stash of lacquers to find something that would *temporarily* satisfy that colour craving….enter Sephora By OPI’s ‘Absinthe Makes The Heart’.

A brief history lesson: the spirit known as Absinthe became popular in the late 19th – early 20th centuries among the Parisian artistic sect.  Also called “La Fée Verte” (The Green Fairy) because of it’s green colour and somewhat hallucinogenic properties (an effect brought on by the herb ‘Grande Wormwood’ which was a main ingredient), it was finally banned by 1915 in the US and most European countries. Since the late 1990’s, Absinthe has been enjoying a revival, and as of 2008, there were over 200 makers of the spirit, without the wormwood that was prevalent in the original.

Let’s get back to the polish, shall we?………..!

Sephora by OPI’s (or SOPI for short) ‘Absinthe Makes The Heart’ (AMTH) is original and absolutely stunning….can’t believe I’ve had this since it came out (Winter 2009) and never wore it! It is a steely grey-green shade, with very fine multi-coloured micro glitter.  In sunlight, you have the most spectacular deep tinsel-like flash, which settles down to an über sparkling dusty green in lower light….mesmerizing! The formula was excellent, not too runny nor too viscous and the brush, while on the thin side (my personal favourite) is quite flexible and made it very easy to get to the edges of the nail with finesse.  Final pictures are with base coat, 3 thin coats of polish and Sèche Vite top coat.

With the 1st coat, the base looks more grey than green with the micro-glitter showing clearly.

It becomes basically opaque by the 2nd coat, with a more greenish cast to it.

By the 3rd coat, it is fully opaque and the reflected sparkle is outstanding; almost seems lit from within and extending out.

In more natural light, the green presence and sparkle are still evident but take on a slightly more subdued look.

Because this shade was a limited edition polish released by Sephora in Winter 2009, it is no longer available for purchase on their website and I hate showing you something you can’t presently get….I apologize with all my heart! Of course, you can always try tracking it down on ebay (*shudder*!!!) but my aim was to show you another dark-with-green-undertones-and-shimmer polish along the lines of CHANEL’s Black Pearl (yes, I know the two are probably nothing alike but the theme is somewhat similar….humour me!). Seriously though, isn’t this mix of grey/green/micro glitter simply awesome?

CHANEL Riva & Comparisons

Today I have a few comparisons to ‘Riva’ to show you using CHANEL’s ‘Nouvelle Vague’, Seophora by OPI’s ‘Havana Dreams’ and OPI’s ‘What’s With The Cattitude’.

Before I obtained Riva, I assumed it would be similar to Nouvelle Vague, but the colour difference is quite obvious: Riva is definitely baby blue while Nouvelle Vague is a washed out turquoise.  The formula was not even close either, with Riva being thin and needing at least 4 coats to build to full opacity with a jelly-like finish, while Nouvelle Vague is significantly thicker, achieves opacity with 2 coats and has denser and finer shimmer throughout.

While I already reviewed Riva against Havana Dreams in more detail here, that was before I actually had my own bottle of Riva, therefore I wished to show how both shades looked on my nails as well as pitted against each other, and I also threw in OPI’s What’s With The Cattitude seeing as how it was the only other pale blue I had in my collection (this was one of the minis of a 4-piece set from OPI’s Shrek Collection). In all pictures starting from pinkie, ring, middle and index fingers the shades are: Nouvelle Vague, What’s With The Cattitude, Riva and Havana Dreams, all with base coat.  (*Please excuse the nasty cut on my ring finger…I seriously need to start wearing gloves when I clean & water my yucca tree!*)

The first coat shows the same streaking pattern between Havana Dreams and What’s With The Cattitude, while Riva & Nouvelle Vague do apply smoother and the shimmer in the latter two is clearly visible in the sun. What’s With The Cattitude was also the thickest of the 4 and somewhat chalkier as well.

With the application of the second coat, Nouvelle Vague & What’s With The Cattitude seem basically opaque while Riva & Havana Dreams are not only the closest in tone but the sheerest and you can even see a slight bald patch with Havana Dreams.  Any streaks, however, disappeared with this layer.  This coat also highlights how much greener Nouvelle Vague, is while the more Robin’s Egg Blue of What’s With The Cattitude is nowhere near Riva’s rinsed pale blue.

With the third coat, both Nouvelle Vague & What’s With The Cattitude achieved 100% opacity and while the sunlight pictures show Riva to be pretty opaque as well, you can clearly see that it’s still somewhat sheer in natural light.  Havana Dreams maintained a small bald patch, but that’s due more to my application than the polish itself (oops!).

In this last picture, I gave an extra coat to Riva, bringing its total to 4 coats and finally fully opaque, and I also added Sèche Vite top coat to all for some added shine.

Final thoughts: Nouvelle Vague could not be considered anything other than a ‘Tiffany Box Blue’ as I like to call it, or a rather washed out turquoise, leaving it out of the running for a match.  What’s With The Cattitude is much brighter and more of a sky blue shade, although a nice light blue alternative if you have it and cannot find either of the remaining two (or don’t wish to empty your wallet trying to purchase them).  As I stated in my previous post comparing Riva & Havana Dreams, I can now truthfully say that while they are extremely close (more like sisters than twins), Riva is still unique in it’s slightly more washed out appearance and the shimmer, while not always visible, does add a little something extra.

CHANEL Riva vs. Havana Dreams

Good day to you all!

It was back in early summer when I first heard the whispers that CHANEL would be releasing a pale blue nail polish shade for their cruise collection. At the same time, Sephora by OPI  had launched a new collection and among the limited edition shades, was a baby blue called ‘Havana Dreams’…which I promptly picked up!  Without knowing if it would be within the same tone as CHANEL’s, I did hope it would be.  Then just over a week ago, the first promo pics starting appearing about ‘Riva’, CHANEL’s baby blue polish….I just had to swatch my version to see how close it came….see the results for yourself!  The always amazing Michèle and her fabulous nails published the first actual pictures of Riva — you can check out her article here.

The most obvious difference I notice between the two, is the subtle shimmer Riva seems to have, versus Havana Dreams’ more flat finish, but that will have to be determined finally in person to be sure.  Havana dreams, as most light pastel colours tend to be, was slightly streaky in application, requiring 4 thin coats to get to full opacity.  In the pictures above, Riva still seems to pull a little cooler, but it could be the different lighting used. I can’t wait to be able to try CHANEL’s version for myself and look forward to a sky blue shade….it’s like the first breath of Spring!

Final thoughts: while I like the idea of a pastel to herald the (soon to be) warmer season ahead, it seems a bit too ‘bright’ for my fingers right now, although I can definitely see it being a stunning pedi colour, especially on tanned feet! Havana Dreams is still showing as available on Sephora.com and retails for $US 9.00/CAD 12.00 for 0.5 fl.oz/15 ml.
