Fresh · Vitamin Nectar Mask & Waterlily Soap
Face masks are definitely having their ‘moment’ and thankfully consumers have a vast array to choose from. One that I’ve been really loving lately is the new Vitamin Nectar Vibrancy-Boosting Face Mask from Fresh; with its strong citrusy presence, it engages almost all of your senses at once — along with making your skin look great. The new Zodiac Oval Soap Collection created in collaboration with internationally known astrologer, Susan Miller, features a bar for each sign and each is as gorgeous to behold as to use (not to mention what an awesome personalized gift it’ll make. Just saying).
Vitamin Nectar Vibrancy-Boosting Face Mask (CAN $80.00) | Created with 50 percent real crushed fruit including oranges, lemons, and clementines — all containing natural AHA acids to gently refine and smooth the skin. This proprietary fruit complex uses a paste from lemons of the Mediterranean region to provide a double exfoliation while the AHA acid content offers a mild chemical peeling effect, leaving skin glowing and even-toned. Made without any parabens, sulfates or phthalates, and good for all skin types: normal, oily, dry, combination & sensitive.
The first thing you’ll notice upon opening this jar, is an uncanny resemblance to orange marmalade (both in smell & look — just don’t eat it, although I’m thinking it’s probably edible too, given the high levels of real fruit in the mix), followed by a wonderfully yummy citrus fragrance. To use, I recommend 2 important tips: do apply the mask while standing over a sink, as some of the its particles will certainly fall, and use a muslin-type cloth for removal which will not only make the job so much easier, but further the exfoliating effect begun with the mask itself. After having used Vitamin Nectar regularly for several weeks now, I’ve noticed that my skin is definitely brighter and more even toned, with the bonus effect of my pores appearing less noticeable and fine lines diminished. In fact, I saw an improvement the very first use, and experienced absolutely no irritation.

Waterlily Soap – Zodiac Oval Soap Collection, Cancer (CAN $18.00) | This vegetable-based oval shaped soap celebrates the water sign Cancer (me!!) and comes infused with a fresh ‘floral aquatic’ fragrance. Wrapped in a gorgeous aqua coloured paper, it’s also embellished with a small stone at the centre of the wire tie — I’m such a sucker for details like this. There is a soap for each sign of the zodiac, divided into their four groups (air, water, earth & fire) and a specific scent for each group.
As someone who ‘masks’ on the regular, I couldn’t have been more excited to try Vitamin Nectar and even though it ranks up there as of the messier masks I’ve used, it’s totally worth it for the clarity of tone it imparts to skin. Bonus points scored for it being THE best-smelling mask out there. As to the Waterlily soap, it’s absolutely gorgeous – no denying, but unfortunately the fragrance turns out to be a touch too strong for my sensitive nose. That said, I have found a new use for it in my linen closet (and my towels and linens have seriously never smelled better), and wouldn’t any one of these soaps make the perfect hostess gift for that special someone on your holiday circuit list?

L’Occitane en Provence – La Collection de Grasse
Grasse, France – a region renown for producing some of the finest and most complex fragrances in the market today, is the inspiration behind L’Occitane en Provence’s latest launch, ‘La Collection de Grasse’, comprised of 4 distinct scent pairings – Jasmin & Bergamote, Magnolia & Mûre, Vanille & Narcisse, and Thé Vert & Bigarade.
A true homage to the perfume schools of Grasse, each pairing has been carefully selected by Karine Dubreuil, perfumer for L’Occitane who has trained with the Roure school of perfumery at Grasse and who is the “nose” behind many famous fragrances. Sourcing precious extracts from near and distant lands such as magnolia from the Far East, blackberry from the South of France, green tea from Japan, bitter orange from Tunisia, jasmine from Grasse and Egypt, bergamot from Italy, vanilla from Madagascar, and narcissus from France, the entire list behind each duo is like taking a worldwide journey.

“Two by two, the ingredients have been brought together with supreme skill from Karine Dubreuil. Sometimes they seem destined for each other. At other times, it’s like a wonderful chance encounter. And then there are the ingredients that echo and enrich each other. Nothing is forbidden – boldness is embraced”
Designed by Olivier Baussan, founder of L’Occitane, the fragrance bottles were created in an almost-perfect square, in a simple style of thick and clear glass, inspired by the traditional perfume bottles of Grasse. The black caps and the face of the matt white card packaging, are decorated by the ampersand (&) symbol in relief (and in the colours of a key accord) – which represent not only the union of scents, but gives a nod to an age-old heritage: in Occitan, the “&” (ampersand) sign was read like other letters and considered the “27th” letter of the alphabet until the 19th century. The ampersand is a ligature of the letters in “et” – the Latin word for “and”.
For the Collection de Grasse, the ampersand becomes the unifying symbol declaring a marriage of contrasting or complimentary elements.
Of the four scent pairings, 3 of them have been specifically designed for women – Jasmin & Bergamote, Magnolia & Mûre, and Vanille & Narcisse, while Thé Vert & Bigarade can be worn by both men and women. Each composition is available in (all in Canadian prices):
- Eau de Toilette, 75 ml – $75.00
- Body Milk, 175 ml – $24.00
- Shower Gel, 175 ml – $20.00
- Perfumed Soap, 125 g – #10.00

Vanille & Narcisse Eau de Toilette (CAD $75.00/75 ml) “Brazen Happiness”
Evocative of – an exuberant and expressive burst of laughter, the mellow warmth of the East
The Spirit – Vanilla lightly enveloped in white flowers
The Fragrance – Discreet at first, the scent of narcissus swells to reveal a bouquet of white flowers ad spicy heart accords. Finally, the rich and radiant vanilla borrows the wilder, untamed notes of narcissus that give it its spirit
Key Raw Materials – Vanilla absolute from Madagascar and narcissus absolute from France
Family – vanilla oriental
- Head notes: blackcurrant, bergamot
- Heart notes: NARCISSUS, gardenia
- Base notes: VANILLA, tonka bean
My experience: I usually avoid florals, as I have found that they do not agree with my body’s unique chemistry. Orientals, however, are something I absolutely love and with that in mind, I looked forward to seeing how this floral-oriental combination would work on me. Upon initial application, I sensed the barest whisper of the vanilla – a sly hint of what was to come later, overlapped by the early exuberance of white flowers. The blackcurrant & bergamot notes add a unique tangy touch, helping to offset what might otherwise become too floral for me, and when the scent finally settled into its final stages some 3 hours later, I was left with the warmer & mellower notes of the vanilla. Surprisingly, this turned out to actually be a floral I can wear, although my personal preference is that the muskier/vanilla tones were more dominant … but that’s just me. Still, this scent feels like the embodiment of modern femininity, without coming off as either too cloyingly girly or ambiguously asexual – very original, and fresh.

Jasmin & Bergamote Body Milk (CAD $24.00/175 ml) – “Day and Night”
Evocative of – A light, graceful, sensual dance
The Spirit – The olfactory variations of a delicate flower observed in the light of dawn
The Fragrance – Bergamot discreetly lights up the scent and continues to retain a lingering presence. Contrasts blend with ambivalence, while jamine reveals all its facets. To convey this ambiguity, at least two types of jasmine would be needed: a jasmine from Grasse and a jasmine from Egypt. The balance fluctuates between petals and leaves, freshness and sensuality, day and night.
Key Raw Materials – Jasmine absolutes from Grasse and Egypt, bergamot essential oil from Italy
Family – jasmine floral
- Head notes: mandarin orange, BERGAMOT
- Heart notes: JASMINE, lemon leaves
- Base notes: sandalwood, cedar
My experience: With a formula that runs more on the thin than thick side, this body milk applied like a veil along my skin, was easily absorbed and left behind a well-hydrated feeling. The shape of the bottle fits comfortably in the hand, and I really like the convenience of the pop up dispenser – keeps any mess to a minimum and can be worked one handed. The scent is crisp & herbal/green, with a slight amber-like undertone and while it was a definite presence upon initial application, it then faded to a softer version of itself – but no less bright – some 3 hours later. As a bodycare product, it has a remarkable emollient quality and my skin felt quite nourished – the addition of fragrance helps it to serve double duty, providing an olfactory appeal as well.

Jasmin & Bergamote Perfumed Soap (CAD $10.00/125 g) – see above for a complete breakdown of the scent.
My experience: This oversized bar, literally made my showering ritual an almost sensual experience; redolent with the sultry tones of jasmine & offset by the brighter notes of bergamot, the steam only amplified the fragrance – love it! Once you begin working this soap, it lathers up extremely well, but not to the point that it’s overdone, and after rinsing, my skin felt clean as well as supple – none of that usual tight feeling you get with some other bars of soap.
Last word: With Mother’s Day around the corner, any (or all!) of the four scent pairings from L’Occitane’s Grasse Collection will make the perfect gift. While I haven’t tried every single product available, the 3 I’m showing here were each impressive in their own right; the Vanille & Narcisse Eau de Toilette not only went the distance in terms of lasting power, but even suited a die-hard floral hater like myself. The Jasmine & Narcisse Body Milk felt wonderful going on, and the scent stayed on way past when I thought it should have faded – a good alternative for anyone who prefers a more subtle version of a fragrance, while the soap not only cleans amazingly well, but also imparts its own soft fragrant touch.

L’Occitane en Provence: Shea Butter Fortune Flowers Limited Edition Collection + Solidarity Soap
L’Occitane en Provence is a brand that cares – both for the people that use their products, the environment, and the overall betterment of our world. This 2nd shea butter limited edition collection, draws its inspiration from two West African ancestral traditions: the outer packaging highlights traditional basket-weaving patterns & motifs, while the Rose Petals, Date Bouquet, and Mango Flower scents of the products are derived from folkloric tales of three African fortune flowers. The drive behind the ‘Solidarity Soap’, is to raise funds and awareness for a cause dear to the brand’s heart: to eradicate preventable blindness throughout the world. Indulging in this collection will not only have you looking and feeling good on the outside, but also where it counts: deep within.
The ‘Shea Butter Fortune Flowers’ collection is redolent with the three scents of traditional West African fortune flowers:
- Mango Flower: reveals a full & zesty aroma – the olfactory signature of the wide open spaces of Burkina Faso
- Date Bouquet: recalls the mouth-watering essence of this deliciously sweet fruit
- Rose Petals: evoking the sweet floral notes of rose with a hint of the sugar-coated scent of candied almonds
The striking patterns on the product packaging, designed by Olivier Baussan – founder of L’Occitane, symbolizes the blazing African sun and the artistic motifs created by the traditional basket-weaving women of West Africa.
Ultra Rich Body Cream in Mango Flower (CDN $28.00 100 ml/3.5 oz) has a light & smooth balm-like texture, that glides like silk across the skin upon application. Made with 25% shea butter, this is an ideal body cream for dry to very dry skin, although I found it to be equally effective on my skin type (normal), without any excessive greasy feel. The delicious mango scent of this cream is fresh and invigorating, and with a slightly cool feel to the touch, it absorbed quickly and kept me feeling hydrated the entire day. Smells so good in fact, you will definitely be tempted to eat it!

Hand Cream in Date Bouquet (CDN $12.00 30 ml, $30.00/150 ml), made with 20% shea butter for exceptional skin protection and nourishing properties, continues the cult phenomenon hand creams that L’Occitane has become known for. I absolutely adore these creams, and always have a tube with me, especially easy to do as it comes in a convenient travel size, along with the more cost effective larger version. Absorbing quickly and with no greasy residue, using this product leaves my hands feeling softened and incredibly hydrated, even after hand washing. The gentle yet exotic scent of this version is TO DIE FOR and you can bet that I’ll be stocking up!

Lip Balm in Rose Petals (CDN $18.00/15 ml), made with certified organic ingredients as well as 10% shea butter in the formula, comes in a tube with a convenient slant tip, making application effortless and eliminating mess (no finger smearing). Ideal for all lips, regardless of levels of dryness, I have come to rely on these lip balms – whether it’s to add a touch of shine, a deeper moisture, or flat-out reviving. The delicate rose petal scent is not overpowering and fades fairly quickly, leaving you with nothing but soft, smooth (kissable … very kissable) lips.

Solidarity Soap in Rose Petals (CDN $3.00/50 g) is dedicated to raising funds towards a global cleanup, and with our support it CAN happen. According to the company:
To support the L’Occitane Foundation in its fight to eradicate preventable blindness throughout the world, 100% of profits (retail price, minus taxes, transport and production costs) will be donated to NGO’s that are improving eye health in rural communities of developing countries, by providing high-quality opthalmological care.
On an international scale, the challenge is huge: over 280 million people in the world are visually impaired, and yet 80% of blindness is preventable.
Thanks to the money raised in 2010:
- over 400 doctors were given training
- 0ver 80,000 people received treatments
After having used this bar, I can vouch for 2 things: 1) my skin felt thoroughly yet gently cleansed, with absolutely no tight feeling after drying off, and 2) knowing that just using this bar of soap is benefitting and making others feel good, well … it doesn’t get better than that.

Final thoughts: With a well-thought out little collection of products that are items we can all use, along with scents that are either exotic (Date Bouquet), fresh (Mango Flower), or subtle (Rose Petals), your body will thank you. While I generally prefer my body lotions to come in a pump-bottle format, I found the oversize screw-cap tin of this version easy to use & access and I know that there will be zero waste when it’s done – plus I can reuse the container for something else (pretty smart, huh?). I can’t say enough great things about L’Occitane hands creams, but if you haven’t tried them yet, you are so totally missing out. As to lip balms, I’ve tried many over the years, yet none have come through on their promises like these do – another must-have item, for sure. And the soap – tell me you don’t love the nostalgic look of this little bar?
