CHANEL · Rouge Coco Flash

CHANEL recently launched Rouge Coco Flash replacing the original Rouge Coco Shine range … and I’m so down for these lippies. With the iconic double C’s standing out thanks to new transparent caps and with a texture that has a lock on shine + comfort, I do believe I may have found my Summer faves … that will take me well into the other seasons too, I might add.

Rouge Coco Flash (CAN $46.00/each) | Housed in similar black lacquered casings as the original Rouge Coco Shine range, these are differentiated by their transparent caps, enabling you to see at a glance what colour you’re reaching for. Available in 26 shades (some limited) and three transformative top coats, they have been created with a Hydraboost complex that contains waxes from natural origin (mimosa, jojoba and sunflower) which provides an easy glide to go with a melt-away texture, imparting a hydrated feel to lips. Thanks to oils that have been specifically selected to reflect light while adding long-lasting nourishment, these also leave a brilliant shine behind. Staying power is shade-dependent, with deeper hues lasting significantly longer … although I’ll take any chance to pull one of these out in public to reapply.

As the formula includes several emollient ingredients, they all display some slip (no mattes here, thank you) and will need reapplication at some point. That said, the deeper shades do leave a light stain behind, but nothing intense.

Below, I’ve broken them down in colour groups to make it simpler: neutrals, pink/corals, reds.

  • N° 53 Chicness – nude
  • N° 54 Boy – muted pink nude
  • N° 84 Immédiat – petal

Named for “Boy Capel”, the love of Coco Chanel’s life, I immediately pulled out the orginal Rouge Coco Shine version to see how the two compared. As can be seen in the below swatch, the original appears to be definitely more pink as opposed to the 2019 version which is also shinier (this is clearly visible more in person than in the photo), somewhat sheerer and more nude-leaning. Both are beautiful and totally wearable — and completely within my neutral-loving wheelhouse.

  • N° 76 Enthusiasm – rose
  • N° 72 Rush – soft pink
  • N° 60 Beat – coral pink

  • N° 91 Bohème – watermelon
  • N° 66 Pulse – red rose

  • N° 68 Ultime – cool red
  • N° 92 Ultime – raspberry red

While these are labelled as “Top Coats“, they are all still quite wearable on their own. Light Up has the most complex ultra-fine shimmer — done in CHANEL’s sophisticated and subtle way, and on bare lips it provides shine while capturing light. If planning on layering it, then I feel it would work best over a matte lip product — this way it won’t get muddied up. Warm Up has colour changing properties that react with your own pH levels, meaning it will look unique on every single person, but provides a light veil of colour even when worn on its own. Finally, Deepness is a great shade to wear if you’re looking to tone down anything too vibrant or pastel, creating an entirely new colour combo in the process.

  • N° 200 Light Up Illuminating Top Coat – transparent with prismatic sparkle
  • N° 202 Warm Up Colour Enhancing Top Coat – sheer orange which reacts to your own natural pH levels
  • N° 204 Deepness Colour Intensifying Top Coat – sheer mauve

As someone who always tends to reach for balms & glosses — especially anything in easy-peasy neutral tones, I was quite excited to see how these would fare. I was also curious to know if they would truly be an improvement over the original Rouge Coco Shine range and the short answer is yes: the differences are subtle, but somehow the new Rouge Coco Flash manages to provide stronger colour, a higher shine factor & more hydration, and all factors that last longer than the originals. All in all, CHANEL did an excellent job of going back to the drawing board here, which means that obviously now I need to go check out the rest, am I right?
