CHANEL | L.A. Sunrise Collection Spring 2016

CHANEL LA Sunrise Spring 2016 opener

The L.A Sunrise Spring 2016 Collection from CHANEL launched across counters in a blaze of flamboyant colour and sizzling energy, albeit done in the typical refined manner that this brand has become known for. Aiming to capture the glorious landscape of this city in beauty form (you can read my review on the Sunkiss Ribbon Blush Harmony here), this collection certainly manages to do exactly that with shades that can take you from a Hollywood red carpet premiere to the free-spirited vibe of Coachella.

CHANEL Tissé Beverly Hills

Les 4 Ombres 262 Tissé Beverly Hills (CAN $68.00) | Ever since CHANEL reformulated all of their eyeshadow quads, I have been loving the formula and shades of every release. Done in a baked format that combines serious pigmentation with a smooth texture for effortless blendability, each shade of this quartet can be applied either dry or damp, and provides long-lasting colour (especially when worn over primer) that stays true without fading. They each have shimmer of varying degrees, with the teal and pink appearing to have the most metallic finish, while the darkest hue has ultra fine glitter specks thrown in for visual contrast as well. The shades, clockwise from upper left:

  • lavender/pink
  • champagne/oyster
  • eggplant/plum
  • teal

CHANEL Moonlight Pink, Griffith Green & Ocean Light cover

CHANEL | Illusion D’Ombre 118 Moonlight Pink, 126 Griffith Green & 122 Ocean Light

CHANEL Moonlight Pink, Griffith Green & Ocean Light 2

Illusion d’Ombre L.A Sunrise Collection, limited edition (CAN $41.00) | A cream to powder eyeshadow formula that is best applied using your fingers, although I’ve had pretty good success using a variety of both synthetic and natural bristle brushes. There is an almost ‘spongey’ feel when pressing a fingertip to the product’s surface and the texture is ultra smooth, gliding effortlessly along the skin. You have about a minute of play to do any necessary blending before the product sets, and each can be worn as a sheer wash of colour or layered for more intensity. Touted as being long-lasting, they definitely are all that — but for those with oily lids like me, you do need a primer first.

  • 118 Moonlight Pink – salmon pink, light peach undertone, the least shimmery of the three. Gives an eye-brightening effect when worn alone
  • 126 Griffith Green – pine green with a light emerald undertone, excellent pigmentation and a complex shimmer for added depth
  • 212 Ocean Light – applies lighter that the electric hue seen in the pot (although it’s easily layered for intensity), the most shimmery of the three but the variety that looks ultra smooth, never chunky

CHANEL Pacific Green & Purple Choc eyeliners

926 Purple Choc & 925 Pacific Green Stylo Yeux Waterproof (CAN $35.00) | A retractible pencil eyeliner in a formula that applies ultra smoothly and thereby minimizes any pulling or tugging along the sensitive skin of the eyes. Each shade has some shimmer – but without glitter – and can be built up for more opacity, if desired. Applied to the waterline, I get a good 7 hours worth of wear before needing to reapply, with Purple Choc lasting even longer than that.

  • 925 Pacific Green – forest green with emerald bronze highlights/shimmer
  • 926 Purple Choc – eggplant/purple with magenta and iridescent shimmer

CHANEL Ardent Purple Le Volume Mascara

100 Ardent Purple Le Volume de CHANEL, limited edition (CAN $41.00) | A deep violet shade shade in one of my favourite mascara formulas of all time, Le Volume delivers on its name so completely by giving lashes a lush density you can see even from the first coat. Relatively clump-free (although I actually don’t mind a little clumping as that can also give the illusion of fullness), smudge and flake-proof as well, it stays true throughout the wearing with the added bonus of removing easily (with a dual-phase makeup remover) so that it won’t stress lashes.

CHANEL Mighty Rouge Coco Shine

116 Mighty Rouge Coco Shine (CAN $43.00) | A Malibu Barbie-pink hue that leans slightly cool due to the blue undertone in the base, in the Rouge Coco Shine glossy and almost balm-like formula. You can definitely build the colour up to some degree – enough so that it gives lips plenty of coverage, but bear in mind that this format is not meant to be opaque. Also layerable over a matching lip liner or lipstick for more depth of tone. Bonus: feels hydrating throughout the wearing and leaves a nourishing effect behind as well. Staying power is average, lasting about 3 hours before reapplying (lightly staining as well).

CHANEL Sunrise Trip Nail Gloss

683 Sunrise Trip Le Vernis Nail Gloss, limited edition (CAN $31.00) | One of the star pieces of the collection and released in a unique new format, Sunrise Trip is an electric purple/indigo/inky super glossy lacquer shade in a hybrid ultra-jelly/crème formula – with a whole new set of application rules as well. On the plus side, it’s incredibly shiny — so much so, that it really doesn’t need a top coat, and is in a colour unlike anything I’ve ever come across from either CHANEL or any other brand, for that matter. It also happens to be strangely non-staining upon removal, which was unexpected considering the deep purple base (but I’m totally not complaining).

Now for the cons: the formula is thick — as in quite thick, with an elastic-y spring-back effect that takes some getting used to, and thus making it somewhat challenging to apply. You need to almost load up your brush and work relatively fast in order to maintain an even level of colour across the nail. Another issue is some bubbling that can occur, especially if the ambient temperature of the room is a little cool, which is where a top coat can help smooth that over, even though this product doesn’t exactly need a top coat – at least, certainly not for shine. The last issue is not with the product itself but with the brush; mine was slightly splayed out at the tip and stiffer than I prefer, making it tricky even for someone with my experience to get the shade to apply the way it looks in the swatch photos below. Note: it should be said that this is the first time in my 30+ years of collecting CHANEL polishes, that I’ve ever had a brush like this.

All that being said, I still absolutely LOVE this shade because it’s just so damn unique in my collection and that makes it worth every little ache and pain.

I bought Les 4 Ombres 262 Tissé Beverly Hills in January when it was newly released, thankfully just in time for my trip to Costa Rica for my brothers wedding. I must say, I applied it over primer before going on an all day trip and it lasted all day in the +40C heat! It’s all I wore the whole trip! It was also my first shadow purchase from Chanel too, so I’m quite impressed, and excited to be able to use it again since the weather here at home is finally starting to get nice.

    • Eugenia says:

Wow – first of all, congrats to your brother & what a fabulous place to get married in! Secondly, it’s so great to hear feedback like this – I agree, the new formulation of their eyeshadows is really knocking it out of the park lately!

What are your thoughts, beautiful?
