China Glaze – Avant Garden Collection Spring 2013 ‘Pastel Petals’

CG Avant Garden part 1 opener

The China Glaze Avant Garden Spring 2013 Collection are 12 shades inspired by flowers in bloom – literally epitomizing what Spring is all about and in my opinion, it’s refreshing to see a collection that actually reflects a season, as opposed to trying to reinvent it. Formula-wise, there is something to be said about a brand with such a relatively low price point that consistently delivers such a quality product – you almost have no excuse to not buy them all!

Part 1 focuses on the 6 softer shades of this collection, the ‘Pastel Petals’. All swatches are with base and top coats.

Dandy Lyin’ Around – a sheer leaning soft white hue filled with ultra fine crystalline shimmer which also bears some slight prismatic flashes. Self levelling, non-streaking and a glossy shine at the finish, there was some shimmer spread upon removal, although easily cleaned up. I absolutely love the pureness of this shade! Coats applied: 3 (thin)

Pink-ie Promise – a carnation/bubblegum/barbie pink hue with blue-lilac undertones and an almost imperceptible pink shimmer that while it doesn’t translate too visibly on the nail, serves to add a nice overall depth. Excellent pigmentation for such a pale shade, and a nice shiny look at the finish. Coats applied: 2

Keep Calm, Paint On – a pale seafoam/celadon green hue with an inner ultra-fine pearlescent shimmer. Paradoxically, while sheer-leaning, this shade still manages to build to a good opacity by the 2nd coat. An absolutely stunning take on mint and one that won’t give you the dreaded “lobster hands”. Coats applied: 2

Tart-y for the Party – a blue based lilac/lavender crème hue that is everything right: self-levelling, amazing opacity, wonderful flow, and super glossy at the finish. Coats applied: 2

Life is Rosy – a rich and true rose crème hue that is ultra colour saturated and can almost pass as a 1-coater. Its dusky quality makes it suitable for all skin tones across the spectrum – a powerfully feminine shade, and super glossy at the finish. Coats applied: 2

Fade into Hue – (NOTE: ignore the yellow cast to my skin in these swatches – still not sure what happened there, but the colour at least shows true!) a delicate periwinkle/cornflower blue crème with violet-blue undertones and an easy smooth application. There’s a slight jelly-like consistency to this formula, backed up by the ultra glossy shine at the finish. Coats applied: 2

Final thoughts: Even though my personal preferences run to deeper, vampier shades, something about these 6 colours makes me feel happy and ultra-feminine. Dandy Lyin’ Around stole my heart with its pristine look, while Keep Calm, Paint On is a mint that will look simply spectacular against a light tan (as well as untanned skin too). Even though there’s only so many versions of pastels that can be produced and while not all hues shown are original in terms of colour, it’s their formula and application that makes them stand out.

Stay tuned for Part 2, the ‘Blooming Brights’.

  1. Nails and Noms says:

GORGEOUS swatches Eugenia!! You managed to capture the hidden shimmer all of these that I hadn’t seen on other blogs. Coincidentally, my wishlist for this collection has now doubled. 😉

    • Eugenia says:

Awww…thanks, my friend! Even though China Glaze is not a high end brand (and you know my weakness for the pricy lacquers!), the polishes definitely beahve as though they’re high end and I love the choice of colours and finishes — this collection was the PERFECT Spring grouping! Let me know what you pick up!

  2. Latoya says:

I wholeheartedly agree with your faves Eugenia – I have Dandy Lyin’ and I really do love it!! I didn’t pick up Keep Calm but I think I might have to, it really is lovely 😀

    • Eugenia says:

Can’t you just see that pale minty hue as a summertime pedi shade? On the beach? Yeah….you definitely need to check this baby out too!

  3. ellie says:

ooooh, I am drooling over these. Great swatches! Your nails are beautiful. How do you keep your cuticles so nice looking?

    • Eugenia says:

Thanks, Ellie! I moisturize my cuticle daily (I always have a hand cream with me and never let my hands get that dry feeling) and I’ve found that the best way to keep up with cuticles, is to push them gently back with an orange stick when you’re fresh out of the shower and the skin there is soft enough to manipulate!

  4. I typically loathe whites for some reason- they seem to look good on everyone but me. However I really want Dandy-lyin Around.Actually I used to kind of avoid pastels in general but I did go to Ulta last week hoping to find that mini set of all the Pearl Petals colors. They were sold out of pretty much all the Avant Garden shades except for Tart-y to the Party which was the main one I was lemming. Now if I could at least get my hands on Dadny-lyin Atround & Keep Calm, Paint On I’ll be a happy girl 🙂 I’ll probably end up ordering them online.

    • Eugenia says:

I used to be the same about white shades as well, but I guess it’s the hue we need to consider; this isn’t too stark and the shimmer makes it completely wearable! At least you were able to get the shade you were lemming…always a good thing!

  5. Deborah says:

Your swatches are so pretty! You are making me reconsider getting some of these ;-).

  6. Hmmm… been a while since I’ve wanted a nail polish but Keep Calm looks so cheerful! I think my longing for Dior Nymphea is transferring onto it. 🙂

    • Eugenia says:

I want that Dior shade too – I’m such a sucker for those types of colours, especially as the warmer weather begins to roll in. That being said, it was snowing here this morning. Go figure.

  7. Linda says:

I am wearing Dandy Lyin’ Around right now for the first time and love it, too! Think I will have to go back for Keep Calm, Paint On now that I’ve seen the swatch. Maybe Tarty for the Party, too!
LOL I need a break from ‘the dark side’ right now! Great post, thank you!

    • Eugenia says:

Hahaha – you’re welcome, Linda – glad you liked the swatches! I’m always impressed with what this brand produces, and at their price point (much less expensive in the US than here in Canada, that’s for sure), it’s easy to pick up as many shades as one desires!

  8. I love Fade Into Hue!

  9. Julia says:

This collection is a little off for me–maybe the pastels are too pastel? I don’t know. Haven’t picked up any yet and I don’t know if I will. I’m starting to feel a bit stressed about my collection–I am moving in two months and I have NO CLUE what I’m going to do about all of my polish (I can leave stuff behind), especially because I am going to have to move again 2-3 months after that. The last time I moved I had about 15% the nail polish I have now…sigh.

    • Eugenia says:

Wow…I don’t even want to think about what moving would entail for my nail polish/makeup collections *shudder*! Even though these shades don’t quite catch your eye, perhaps something in the second half will! Best of luck in the move, Julia – I’m confident everything will work out for you!

  10. Neelie says:

Lovely swatches as always. Gosh, except the dusty rose colour, I think I want them all! I am curious how Tart-y to the Party compares to OPI you’re such a budapest.

    • Eugenia says:

Thanks, Neelie! You have a keen eye; the two shades are actually quite close, although I would have to say that Tart-y to the Party leans a couple of degrees more purple beside the OPI

  11. Ashesela says:

There are some really beautiful colours in this collection!! Great post! 😀

  12. Dovey says:

    Hi Eugenia,

What a great collection! I think Fade into the Hue might be my favorite — what a relaxed blue! The clean white of Dandy-Lyin Around is pretty awesome too!

    • Eugenia says:

Hey Dovey! I couldn’t have said it better myself: a relaxed blue! Very calming, am I right?! I’ve never been huge into pastels, but I couldn’t help but love so many of these!

  13. Maribeth says:

My favs are the 2 you named in your last paragraph- Dandy Lyin’Around and Keep Calm…!So pretty…i hope I can track these down!! Beautiful pictures lady!! 🙂

    • Eugenia says:

Well, we are fellow Cancerians…of course we’d like the same shades! I sure hope you can find them; would love to see these swatched on you!

      • Maribeth says:

Your images were haunting me today (in a good, obsessive sort of way) and I went out looking. I was able to snag Dandy Lyin’ but no such luck with Keep Calm…. I am determined to find that one now!!! 😉

      • Eugenia says:

Ooooh…can’t wait to see this pristine beauty on your nails, Maribeth! I sure hope you find Keep Calm, Paint On as it’s such a gorgeous shade!

  14. I love the way Keep Calm looks on you! Great photos as always!

What are your thoughts, beautiful?
