essence #01 It’s Popul-art Blush – Vintage District Collection

essence It's Popul-art Blush opener

A few weeks ago, I came upon the essence Vintage District Collection on display at my local Pharmaprix (Shopper’s Drug Mart elsewhere in Canada), and stopped dead in my tracks when I spotted this blush. To begin with, the peachy/coral hue of the blush is right up my alley and a colour that is universally flattering, but the gilded scrollwork on its surface is a veritable work of art – how could a beauty fiend like myself possibly even consider marring such loveliness? So I bought two … problem solved.

*I need to state from the outset that this blush, along with the other items from the Vintage District Collection by essence, were all limited edition and might not be readily available now, but I absolutely needed to show you all this stunning blush — I apologize in advance for any longing this might stir up

#01 It’s Popul-art Blush (CAD $3.49) – a mid tone peach hue with a floral golden overspray that hides a coral shade beneath. The larger coloured section of this blush bears some pink undertones and applies rather softly at first, although it can definitely be built up easily and with very little powdery kickback. The overspray took a few swipes of my brush to reveal the darker shade beneath – a good thing in my book, as I’m not a huge fan of glimmery cheeks. Swirled together with just a hint of the gold thrown in, however, creates the most gorgeous summery glow to the cheeks … a less intense version of NARS’s cult classic Orgasm blush. Lasting power was quite good as well, going a full 8 hours before I noticed any fading.

*As there is talc in this formula, those with sensitivities to this ingredient should beware.

Last Word: This is my second essence blush, and while the first one I tried (from the Cherry Blossom Girl Collection) was a bit of a let-down quality and colour-wise, I have nothing but praise for #01 It’s Popul-art. The 3 shades (peach, gold & coral) combine to create a shade that will suit all skin tones, except for perhaps the darkest – upon which this shade could actually function exceptionally well as a warm highlighter, and the powder itself is rather finely milled as well – completely unexpected, when you factor in the ridiculously low price point of this blush. As a long time fan and purveyor of high end cosmetics, I just love it when a lower-priced product comes along and surprises me like this!

The Vintage District Collection from essence is limited edition, but might still be available at select retail outlets.
