Fenty Beauty · Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Setting Powders & Fairy Bombs

When Fenty Beauty launched last year with its range of 40 foundation shades, jaws dropped — then basically every other brand raced to follow suit. In keeping with the whole skin-diversity theme, the brand recently launched setting powders to match, as well as 3 new highlighters … the latter of which are exactly what you’d expect from Rihanna: a killer glow.

Looks like the beauty version of an amino acid chain, no?

Each powder has its own included inner cap – genius!

Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Setting Powder (CAN $40.00/each) | Housed in octagonally shaped acrylic jars with a mirrored cap, each powder also includes an inner lid that helps keep the contents spill-free & neatly contained. Available in 8 shades that range from the fairest (Lavender) to deep (Coffee, not shown), each powder is ultra finely milled, weightless and comes to a sheer matte finish when buffed gently into the skin. Said to help blur the look of pores, fine lines and minor imperfections, this formula also has the advantage of helping you get photo-ready as it minimizes camera flash-back. Note that while fragrance is mentioned in the ingredients list, I detect absolutely nothing.

I tend to concentrate more on colour cosmetics and skincare, and it’s not until I have an event where my makeup needs to stay the course while looking flawless, that I turn towards what I call the “support system” i.e.: primer and setting powder. At those times, I want products that will do the job invisibly and that’s exactly what these powders strive for. On my complexion (combination, light-medium tone & which tans easily) Banana turned out to be my best match, with Butter coming in a close second. Lavender is obviously much too light on me for overall application, but does an excellent job of brightening my undereye area without giving me that dreaded “raccoon effect”. While said to work with all complexion types, my gut tells me that those with drier skins might need to test these out in person before committing.

Please note that the swatches below were all done with a heavy hand, in order to show the colour differences between the three shades.

  • Banana – for light to tan skin tones, great for brightening
  • Butter – for fair to medium skin tones
  • Lavender – for fair to light skin tones, great for brightening

Fairy Bomb Shimmer Powder (CAN $35.00/each) | *Online ONLY* Give me all the highlighters … From the very start, Fenty Beauty has separated itself from every other brand on the market via the release of incredibly unique highlighter shades & formulations (see examples here and here). These latest iterations also include an inner lid for protection as the setting powders have, and can be used on both the face and body. With the same reflective shimmer that comes packed in the Fairy Bomb Glittering Pom-Pom but in a loose formula here, they have a soft vanilla-coconut fragrance that’s completely inoffensive, and which dissipates soon after application.

There’s nothing quite like a bit of shimmer to not only attract light to the skin, but to lift my spirits (highlighter makes me happy – end of story). What’s interesting about these Fairy Bombs, is that while there are just the 3 shades, they somehow manage to bridge a wide variety of skin tones. Each powder is exceptionally fine-milled and silky, and while quite colour saturated, they also blend out easily to a gossamer-thin veil, if need be. Staying power when worn over primer/foundation, is excellent as well.

Note that all have been applied with a heavy hand in the swatches below.

To be fair, I’m not one to layer on a full face of makeup on a day-to-day basis and setting powder is not a product I tend to reach for, but as I have combination skin (which tends to get oily in the T-zone), I need to rethink my methods, and after testing these out, I’m really impressed with the way Banana not only gives my skin a more air-brushed & flawless finish, but helps to keep me looking shine-free much longer than if I had gone without. As to the Fairy Bombs, all I can say is this: SO MUCH YES. If you’re a highlighter fiend, then you probably need these. And even if you’re not, you still probably need them. Just saying …
