Giorio Armani – Belladonna Highlighting Palette (LE), Effetto Nudo Spring 2014 Collection

GA Belladonna opener

When a beauty product is as exquisitely executed as the Giorgio Armani Belladonna Highlighting Palette, it becomes ‘wearable art’. The undisputed star of the brand’s ‘Effetto Nudo Spring 2014 Collection‘, this palette is said to impart a “peau d’ange” effect to the skin – luminous, ethereal & otherworldy. Highlighters in general can be schizophrenic creatures, with some barely visible while others appearing over the top, but Giorgio Armani has managed to get it just right. And let’s face it, who wouldn’t want the skin of an angel?

Belladonna Highlighting Palette, limited edition (CAN $70.00) – Housed in a black lacquered elliptoid shaped & dual-compartment compact,  which also includes a natural bristle brush and seals with a magnetic closure, the Belladonna Highlighting Palette is meant to be worn on the face, décolleté, or as an eyeshadow. The surface of this unscented highlighter bears a raised embossed rendering of a belladonna lily – a simple yet beautifully elegant flower, while the powder itself is a soft pale pearly-golden hue with the barest hint of peach in the base. According to the brand:

“The powder features micropearl technology, printed in an ultra-fine floral pattern, inspired by a flower with light, subtle petals, like a romantic and mysterious tulle fabric. The new gel-based formula is prepared using a cold-cast technique and melds immediately with its case, for a unique feel between powder and cream. A texture that is dense and incredibly light at the same time”

The first thing I noticed (other than its jaw-dropping beauty), is how incredibly silky smooth this highlighter is, with virtually no powdery kick-back rising up, even after vigorously rubbing my brush along the surface. Ultra-finely milled and bearing a lightweight texture, this highlighter applies effortlessly and evenly, lending the skin a truly stunning luminosity. I was able to wear this successfully as an eye shadow as well, layering it on a touch thicker – but the beauty of this unique new formula, is that you really can’t overdo it. Giorgio Armani’s head of makeup, Linda Cantello, used the Belladonna Highlighter Palette in the Privé Nude Show to “halo the eyes with a soft, velvety light” – and I have to say that this description is spot-on. Lasting power was surprisingly good, considering it’s not densely pigmented – lasting easily a full 9 hours as a highlighter (even melding with my skin’s natural oils, it still looked good), and even longer on my eyes (applied over primer).

It appears that I’ve managed to collect quite a few highlighting products over the past couple of years and while I largely ignored this category in the past, I have come to love that extra little touch of finesse it gives to my completed makeup look. Many highlighters can either be too frosty, too chunky/glittery, or too contrasting against my skin tone (light-medium) but the Belladonna Highlighting Palette somehow manages to not only provide a gorgeously natural sheen to the skin, it does so in an almost nude way – a fresh-looking glow, if you will. The brush found in the compact is quite well made and useful for on-the-go touch ups, but I prefer using my own brush to ensure the most flawless application.

If you pick up nothing else from this collection, make sure you do NOT skip this palette – especially if you’re a fan of highlighters. The velvety sheen is truly beautiful and the powder blends seamlessly along the skin, while the shade is neutral enough that it will suit a wide variety of skin tones across the spectrum. A bonus for Canadian fans of Giorgio Armani Cosmetics: this palette retails for CAN $70.00 versus its US $88.00 price tag … not bad, huh?!
