Givenchy · L’Interdit Givenchy Eau de Parfum

Legend has it that in 1957 when Hubert de Givenchy created a fragrance exclusively for his muse & dear friend Audrey Hepburn and then asked if he could commercialize it, her emphatic response was “je vous l’interdis!” (“I forbid you”), and thus the name of that legendary scent was born. Fast forward to the present with the release of L’Interdit Givenchy, the new incarnation of an icon that pays homage to the original … without breaking any promises. Something tells me that Ms. Hepburn would approve.

Givenchy’s muse, Audrey Hepburn with the original L’Interdit created just for her

L’Interdit Eau de Parfum (CAN $112.00/50 ml) | In tribute to the 1957 bottle, this iteration doesn’t stray too far from the original, bearing the same square shape and gently rounded shoulders, even displaying a similar cap — although this version includes a small square tag with the brand’s 4G logo on the grosgrain ribbon . Created by master perfumers Dominique Ropion, Anna Flipo, and Fanny Bal, this fragrance falls under the floral/woody classification: feminine yet slightly mysterious at the same time. The mood this scent is meant to convey is one of “freedom and the embrace of forbidden sensations”, I’m guessing that’s probably due to the contrast of white flowers against a darker accord.

  • Top notes: Orange Blossom, Jasmine Sambac
  • Heart note: Tuberose
  • Base notes: Patchouli, Vetiver, Ambroxan

When it comes to fragrances, I am quite particular — primarily out of necessity, since certain scents can trigger an instant migraine. Florals tend to be the biggest culprits for me, which may be why I hesitated to test this one out when it first arrived … but never let it be said I didn’t take one for the team. At first spritz, I pick up something fruity mixed in with what feels like “happy” flowers (sounds nuts, but it’s the best way I can describe it) that instantly brought me back to my teens. About 30 minutes later though, everything shifted to something creamier and a little deeper; at this point it was more “dappled forest” and less “white bouquet” — which suits me just fine, as I do like my fragrances to lean dark. By the end of the day, the light-hearted start became a dim memory, leaving behind a soft vanilla/warm skin type of scent, but with a hint of something earthy. The best part? No migraine, so I call that a total win.

Reviewing fragrances is tricky, mainly because we all have our scent preferences and what works for one person, can be noxious to another. And since I’m not exactly “fragrance vocabulary-proficient”, I’ll stick to the basics: what this scent is composed of and how it makes me feel. Bottom line: L’Interdit Givenchy is interesting: easy to wear, fun, flirty, sophisticated and yet still holds a sensual edge … not to mention being a great way to channel your inner modern-day Audrey Hepburn.
