GOSH – Galaxy (swatches, comparisons & review)

Gosh Galaxy (opener)

Other than vampy-hued nail lacquers, I’m a total sucker for anything multi-chromatic, especially if it literally stops me in my tracks the way GOSH’s ‘Galaxy’ did recently while I was running errands at my local Pharmaprix (Shopper’s Drug Mart to all non-Québecers). Ever notice how the cosmetics department is the first section you encounter at a drugstore? Yeah…that’s lethal for a beauty aficionado; you just KNOW you’ll be walking away with something. At least this time is was just this one unique bottle of varnish. Maybe two … but that’s for another post!

Gosh Galaxy

#612 Galaxy – (CAD $7.99 8 ml/0.3 fl.oz) is a highly complex shade that almost defies being pinned down in description. A sheer-ish taupe/bronze base colour that is absolutely filled with gold, green, blue, and purple irregularly shaped & finely ground glass-flecked shimmer. Bearing an excellent flow and viscosity to the formula, I found that 2 coats gives decent coverage, although it seems to turn the base colour somewhat browner at this point. With a reflective foil-like finish, there’s definitely an ombré effect seen, where the tips can appear darker and an almost greenish cast seen in some lights that provides that gorgeous duo & multi-chromatic tone. Perfectly self-levelling and with a surprisingly high glossy finish at the end, removal wasn’t too difficult, excepting for some of the more stubborn shimmery bits. Coats applied: 3 (thin)

Alls watches are with base and top coats and I encourage you to click to enlarge the following photos for ‘Galaxy’s’ full impact.

Gosh Galaxy vs OPI comparisons

The 2 polishes which bear a similar look & finish and that came to mind, are OPI’s ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ and ‘The World is Not Enough’ (both previously reviewed here) from the brand’s latest ‘Skyfall’ release, but even before swatching, you can clearly note how different they all are:

  • index finger: OPI ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ – identical sheerness level, greyer based with steel blue undertones, good shine but without ‘Galaxy’s’ high gloss finish
  • middle & pinkie fingers: GOSH ‘Galaxy’
  • ring finger: OPI ‘The World is Not Enough’ – the sheerest formula and lightest in tone of the 3, not as glossy as ‘Galaxy’

Final thoughts: As I’m not up on GOSH’s releases, I couldn’t tell you if this particular shade was from a specific collection or not, although with “special edition” printed on the bottle along with the stars decorating the cap, I’m going to guess that this was probably a limited edition colour. The formula, as with several other GOSH lacquers that I’ve tried, was quite good and if 3 coats of polish seems like a lot, then I imagine one layer over a black base would probably achieve the same depth of tone, although you may lose some of its unique complexity. Definitely a varnish that will be conversation-starting, ‘Galaxy’ is so worth hunting down, in my opinion … in particular if you also happen to be a sci-fi buff like me!

  1. Thanks for the comparison shots! These sort of colours all look alike and confuse the heck out of me! I’m thinking that I can live without this, considering that I have the other OPI shades and they aren’t my faves. OH GOSH OH GOSH. What do I do??? LOL

    • Eugenia says:

I swear I literally stopped in my tracks when i saw it (“look at all the prettttyyyyyy colours”!!!) then I was sure that the Bond OPI’s I had were close, but that didn’t stop me from picking it up anyway – glad I did, as they’re all so different!

  2. Linda says:

Huh. Really nice! I have wondered about this brand but hesitated to try it. I have become a much more discerning nail polish user than I was and cheaper, streakier polish will not cut the mustard! But you say good application, wonder about the wear…I’m so excited as I have just returned from the Bay where I have purchased the last Dior Grand Bal Collection polish! Although I may have to try it out, will probably tuck it into my Xmas stocking! There IS an upside to filling your own stocking, LOL! Also scored the last OPI Bond mini set at considerable discount at fave salon/beauty supply store. Been a great day!

    • Eugenia says:

Congrats on your Dior, and I admire your restraint – but what a brilliant idea; buying one’s own stocking stuffers, lol! Congrats on the OPI Bondettes you picked up – aren’t they the cutest?! As to the GOSH, if you haven’t tried this brand, put it on your list plus they’re frequently discounted which makes the whole deal even sweeter!

  3. miam says:

hello! i never comment so this is the first time! i love your nail polish reviews but i want to ask you a post about the top coats you most use pleasee =) glad u consider my request

    • Eugenia says:

Welcome, Miam and happy to hear from you! As to top coats, I have several in my rotation; I normally like to keep brands together (for example, if I’m wearing Essie, then I’l, use Essie base & top coats, a-england with a-england, OPI with OPI, etc). Do I have one favourite? That’s hard to really say, as some top coats do not work universally with all brands of polish. I tend to lean towards a-england’s top coat, because I love the incredible glassy finish it gives, although it doesn’t dry as quickly as Seche Vite. Hope that helps!

  4. Jennifer A. says:

I think this is actually a dupe of Nicole by OPI in For Gold Times Sake.

    • Eugenia says:

I checked out images of the Nicole by OPI you mentioned, and I think you’re right — they seem to be quite close, but without swatching the 2 side by side, I couldn’t say for sure or speak of how their formulas might differ.

  5. olivia says:

I suppose this is similar yet different from Chanel’s Graphite. For the price I will have to get this one too!

  6. Man, we don’t get this brand here! I saw some when I was in Canada, but I never thought to pick up any. Duh. Hahahaha. It’s gorgeous!

  7. Wow! This polish has so much depth! Such an interesting shade.

  8. feeraa says:

Wow! I’m not usually a fan of Gosh, but I think I might be purchasing this one…

  9. Maribeth says:

BEAUTIFUL! I need to find a way to get my hands on Gosh easily here!

  10. Deborah Pelton says:

Wonderful review, Eugenia. In the photos Galaxy reminded me of Chanel Graphite. How does it compare to the Chanel?

    • Eugenia says:

Thanks, Deborah! I didn’t compare the two in swatches, although holding them against each other, I noticed that Graphite’s “shimmer” seemed much finer & refined, with a decidedly greyer cast. Still, now you’ve got me curious to actually test them out against each other, lol!

  11. Sandi says:

I’ve never heard of this brand before! I don’t think they sell it here in the states…but this is really pretty.

    • Eugenia says:

Actually, there are several states that are carrying GOSH products again; I know that they’re available in NY but you could check their website for other cities & states as well. Plus, they offer shipping to the US as well!

  12. Jess says:

I bought this a few weeks ago and it’s sitting in my untrieds. It really is very eye-catching in person! “Sitting in my untrieds” is a phrase I seem to use a lot; it’s as if I’m buying nail polish faster than I can wear it or something.;)

    • Eugenia says:

LOL!! Jess, something tells me that that’s exactly what you’re doing…as all us nail polish fiends are doing – buying them faster than we can wear them! Go put it on girl…don’t waste another second! 🙂

  13. Meghan says:

I wish that Gosh polishes got a bit more press from the nail polish bloggers. I see them all the time at Shoppers but really don’t know whether they’re any good. I have a feeling that Gosh is more of a European brand, and since a lot of the bloggers are American, perhaps that explains the lack of attention to this brand. Regardless, this is a beautiful colour, and nice to see it on your blog. I’ll keep my eye out for it when I’m at Shoppers next.

    • Eugenia says:

Thanks, Meghan! GOSH is a brand that hails from Denmark and one reason it doesn’t get as much airtime with US bloggers, is because it used to be sold in the States, then was pulled from that market and reintroduced in certain states only recently. Apart from their nail polishes, the brand also has an extensive cosmetics range, worth looking into as well! I hope you do come across this shade – it’s a keeper!

      • Meghan says:

Thanks Eugenia for the clarification! I’ve been using Gosh mascara for about 2 weeks now and really love it. Makes my lashes full but without the clumps.

And I just noticed that your blog is snowing! Nice touch. 🙂

      • Eugenia says:

My turn to thank you, Meghan; I’ve been waiting for my blog to start “snowing” again, but wasn’t sure if it had started…I appreciate you letting me know! Good to know about the GOSH mascara – I might give it a whirl as well!

  14. So gorgeous! On your nails, it looks so different from the first bottle shots!

    • Eugenia says:

Thanks, Susan! I used flash in the bottle shots, primarily to accurately show all the tones & colours found in the bottle, which don’t always translate as clearly on the nails, but in this case, they all manage to show up just the same!

  15. I just picked this up last week, a lone little bottle in the jumble of other GOSH polishes at my local Pharmprix. It is SO gorgeous.

  16. Amanda says:

I had this in my hands last week and debated back and forth whether to get it. In the end, I put it down. Bad move on my part 🙁

  17. MariJo says:

I’m in love with this on you!!! Though, I haven’t tried it yet, I’m so happy to have this baby in my stash ;0)
