How do you take a cult fave and give it new life? Well, when the object in the crosshairs is Guerlain’s Rouge G lipstick range, then the answer actually lies with the outer casing and the 15 new styles that were created to help you add a personalized touch. So basically, your lipstick will now have its very own wardrobe. Your other makeup is going to be soooo jealous.
Chocolate & lipstick may not exactly go together, but both happen to be items I love; when I was gifted these Rouge G cases, it’s safe to say that I was equally excited for the included box of handmade chocolates. What I failed to pick up on at first though, was that they were actually designed to mimic the lipstick cases; at times, I can be dense like that. By the way, the chocolates were delicious (and obviously gone in a flash).
Rouge G Customizable Lipstick Case (CAN $20.00/each) | Make no mistake about it: these cases are not only gorgeous, but so much FUN. With 15 patterns to choose from, they have been crafted with the same meticulous attention to detail as the original cases. With their double mirror (which flips open as soon as the lipstick bullet is pulled out), the cases have a nice heft to them and while probably too bulky for small evening bags, they offer a decorative approach to lipstick protection … and literally make you want to use any excuse to whip one out in public.
- Minimal Chic – white marble look with pale green veining
- Exotic Safari – black & white snakeskin look
- Miami Glam – (limited edition) pink pebbled leather look
Shade N°25 Flaming Red that was personally selected for me, also came with a lovely surprise: the inner mirror was engraved with my name. I’m not sure if the brand offers engraving services in general, but I think it’s a great way to [further] personalize a Rouge G lipstick, which in turn makes it a lovely & thoughtful gift — whether for yourself or someone special. Hint: Mother’s Day is coming #justsaying
Rouge G N°25 Flaming Red Customizable Lipstick Bullet (CAN $36.00) | Interesting fact: Guerlain launched its first lipstick bullet in 1870. And no, that’s not a typo — 1870. The Rouge G lipstick was created in 2009, with its unique elegantly curved case designed by jeweller Lorenz Bäumer, marking another first for the brand: the integrated double mirror. For 2018, Guerlain introduces a new and improved Rouge G formula, enriching these lipsticks with plant-based Polymers and Silver Microcrystals for even more intense & luminous long-lasting colour, along with Jojoba and Mango Butters to provide deep nourishment. Rounding things off are Hyaluronic Acid and Guggul Resin to help smooth the look of lips. As scent is an integral part of all Guerlain products, the fragrance here is yet another statement: bearing an overall tone of softly enveloping vanilla, it is created with a sparkling top note accord of lemon, orange and bergamot, supported by the sweetness of rose and iris heart, and finally followed up with vanilla and Tonka Bean. That said, it should be noted that any fragrance dissipates quickly after application.
Rouge G N°25 is a true red hue with both cool (blue) and warm (orange) undertones in the base, making it a universally flattering AND wearable shade by a broad range of skin tones. The texture needs to be felt to be understood, but “buttah” definitely is the first word that comes to mind; it’s a sensorial experience unlike any other lipstick I’ve ever worn, in fact. With a colour that doesn’t bleed into surrounding lip lines, you basically achieve full coverage by the first swipe and it also displays amazing wear time — despite its emollient nature — fading to a lovely deep rose stain once the majority of colour has gone.
Going through my collection, the two Rouge G shades I own that are closest to N°25 are N°821 Rouge Saphir and N°822 Glamorous Cherry (both of which were limited edition releases and not currently available), and even though at quick glance they might appear similar, it’s almost as though N°25 is an amalgamation of the other two, no?
Sometimes when I get to this part of my post, I’m at a loss for words; I mean, when talking about something as incredibly luxurious and beautiful to wear as Guerlain’s Rouge G lipstick, there’s really not much more to add that hasn’t already been covered above. That said, what IS new is the fact that you can now purchase your preferred shade at a much more reasonable price than the original AND deck it out the way YOU want — even the cost of each case is really quite attractive (and surprisingly not as expensive as I expected). See? I wasn’t kidding at my opening paragraph: lipstick wardrobe.
