Starting off 2019 with some beauty luxury, and in my opinion, few brands can touch Louboutin when it comes to opulence, wouldn’t you agree? For Christian Louboutin, eyes have always been the most expressive part of the face, which is why he created Tape À L’Oeil (a French expression meaning “eye-catching“). The actual product aside, I’d probably want these for the packaging alone: definitely eye-catching and display-worthy to the max.
Tape à L’Oeil Eye Colour (CAN $65.00/each) | Available in either a matte or a metallic finish, there are 6 shades of each to choose from, with the names of the nude grouping inspired by women close to Christian. The packaging consists of a clear acrylic vial (which conveniently displays the shade it holds) bearing a golden fluted cap reminiscent of Art Deco & Byzantine motifs, both eras that the designer frequently references in his work. The tapered “stiletto” weighted cap echoes that of the brand’s nail lacquer bottles, and is similar to the concept of a calligraphy brush; the cap is able to rest comfortably in your hand, helping to ensure a controlled and precise application. The applicator is a small dense brush, making it easy to not only pick up a good amount of product per swipe, but able to cover a large expanse of the eye quickly and evenly.
Each matte nude eye colour is formulated with “an oil-based gel structure” that basically applies like a cream and comes to a powdery matte finish. Pigment-rich in nature, you get full opacity by the first swipe, along with a long-lasting finish. As these set fairly quickly, I recommend working one eye at a time — especially if planning on blending out, in order to avoid them drying before you’re done. There are several ways to wear the mattes: singly — whether diffused or layered on opaquely for a more editorial effect, mixed together to create a completely unique nude tone, or used as a base for any other shade placed on top.

The metallic formula is a unique fusion of water and metallic pigments, coming together to form a mirror-like brilliance that’s nothing short of blinding. The inspiration behind this creation was some of the highly-reflective materials used in Christian’s leather goods, bringing both a luxe yet playful touch to eye makeup. Each is highly pigmented and has a creamy texture that’s not only easy to layer along the eye, but effortless to blend out. That said, you still need to work one eye at a time to ensure the product doesn’t set before you’re done. Incredibly long-lasting, the finish is also crease & flake-proof, in particular when applied over primer.

Probably out of habit, I usually reach for powder eyeshadow, but after playing around with these shades for several weeks now, I must admit that I really like how easy they are to work with, how colour-saturated they are, and how incredibly long they last without showing any sign of fading. On top of a stellar performance, each is simply breathtaking to behold. On the expensive side they may be, but definitely well worth every penny spent.
