To celebrate Chinese New Year (2020), NARS has taken some of their cult classics and reissued them in exclusive metallic glossy red packaging etched in gold (so gorgeous, am I right?). Inspired by beauty and good fortune, these may look like collector’s pieces (which they totally are, by the way) but I have a hunch they’ll end up being some of your most reached for.
Singapore Eyeshadow Quad (CAN $68.00) | When this quad was originally released in the regular packaging, I was immediately drawn to the shade selection although I never got around to picking it up — but I’m pretty happy to finally have it now. Yes, all the shades have shimmer/sparkle to varying degrees but here’s the interesting part; they all not only display excellent pigmentation and blendability, but can definitely be made to work for both day and evening wear. Any of the lighter shades applied as a sheer wash will certainly be work-appropriate, while the deeper hues can amp up the drama pretty quickly. For even more impact, try wearing them applied with a dampened brush — the effect is nothing short of brilliant. Wear time over primer is amazing, staying true until removed.

- sparkling metallic brass, top right
- shimmering deep rust red, bottom right
- sparkling antiqued bronze, bottom left
Translucent Crystal Light Reflecting Setting Powder (CAN $49.00) | I have several setting powders to choose from and while it’s not a product I sport on a daily basis, when I do want that extra step to lock in my makeup look this is usually the one I’ll reach for. With it’s exclusive Light Reflecting Complex™, this is an exceptionally fine-milled and weightless powder that applies evenly, blends effortlessly, and despite the scary white colour, is actually completely translucent upon the skin. The microfine mineral powders in the formula are loaded with Glycerin and Vitamin E to help guard against dryness and provide a comfortable feel throughout wear, while Photochromic Technology actually “diffuses light and adjusts to new sources of light, so skin looks radiant all day while fine lines, pores, and wrinkles optically fade as skin appears visibly smoothed“. Trying to accurately capture the effect is ridiculously hard (just as with Guerlain’s Météorites powders — another personal fave), but if you look closely in the swatch below, you can see how the blended out portion makes my skin appear a little blurred and almost filtered.
Afterglow Lip Balm (CAN $37.00/each) | I am rather lip balm-obsessed, no doubt about it, and when it comes packaged this beautifully, well that’s just the icing on the cake. Seriously though, with a formula containing Monoï Hydrating Complex to provide amazing comfort and hydration throughout wear that’s married to a sheer wash of colour, what’s not to love? The biggest surprise for me is that these actually feel as good as they look and I’d say that that’s definitely the best part.
- Orgasm – sheer peachy pink with golden shimmer
- Nuits de Chine – sheer scarlet red
NARS is a brand that never disappoints — whether that’s in regards to formula, colour, or packaging and this capsule Chinese New Year 2020 Collection is a perfect example of what I’m saying. The good thing is that all these products are available in the regular lineup but if you’re new to any of them, I definitely recommend jumping all over this limited edition packaging … before it’s gone.
