Back in 1999, François Nars caused quite the stir in the beauty world with the release of the provocatively named Orgasm blush and now 21 years later, he’s taking things up a notch with the launch of the Orgasm X Collection. Basically, you might think of these pieces as multiple “O’s” for the face … and yes, I went there.
Unlike many PR mailers that tend to be quite wasteful, I actually really appreciate the box this collection arrived in as it can easily be repurposed to hold other beauty products. Well done, NARS … well done, indeed
I also love how each piece is securely in place so nothing would be in danger of becoming damaged in transport. Plus, how cute are those personalized “X” elastics?
I have to admit that from the moment I saw the images for this collection, I immediately starting lusting after these palettes. For starters, I have a weakness for reddish & salmon hues — and both palettes definitely fit that bill. They each contain a nice mix of matte, shimmer, and shine which helps in creating a variety of looks, whether that’s amped up or dialled down. The texture is creamy smooth and shows excellent pigmentation, combined with stellar blendability. Some of the shimmery shades might have a bit of fall down — nothing that a quick tap of the brush beforehand won’t solve. Staying power over primer, is “bang” on, with the colours staying true until removed.
Orgasm Quad Eyeshadow, limited edition (CAN $69.00) | The lighter of the two palettes, making it the more obvious choice for a daytime look but make no mistake about it: all you need to bring these dainty shades to a whole new level are a few coats of mascara. BAM.
- golden shimmer
- light pink champagne
- matte coral
- shimmering light cocoa
Orgasm X Quad Eyeshadow, limited edition (CAN $69.00) | The deeper toned palette of the two, you can still make the shades daytime appropriate by sticking to the lightest hues in the quad (top two), or go absolutely wild and take things all the way to evening with the rest.
- pink rust shimmer
- sparkling amber
- dusty rose matte
- black with red shimmer
Orgasm X Cheek Palette, limited edition (CAN $60.00) | This palette comes with one highlighter and 2 blushes, all generously sized and perfect to travel with. The highlighting powder compliments the blushes and is also a stellar stand alone shade (which I hope the brand decides to release as a single). The two blush shades include cult-fave Orgasm and the new Orgasm X and in my opinion, if you’ve yet to splurge on the original Orgasm then you should definitely consider investing in this trio. The texture of all three is amazing, beautifully pigmented and displaying an excellent blendability as well.
- Orgasm Highlighting Powder – golden shimmer
- Orgasm Blush – peachy pink with golden shimmer
- Orgasm X Blush – shimmering deep coral pink with gold pearl
I immediately dove into my collection of NARS highlighters to see if the Orgasm Highlighting Powder had a dupe, and the closest I came up with were both Fort De France — which is clearly lighter and slightly ‘pearlier’, and Ibiza — which is definitely deeper and more golden (both are previously reviewed here). That said, it’s like Orgasm Highlighting Powder is the love-child of both Fort De France & Ibiza, no?
Orgasm X Blush (CAN $39.00) | For anyone who’s ever felt that the original Orgasm leaned a bit too light, welcome to Orgasm X — “because too much is never enough“. This shimmering deep coral pink with gold pearl can easily be worn by a broad range of skin tones, and looks equally beautiful against both cool and warm complexions. The texture is incredibly buttery and blends out effortlessly along the skin and while strongly pigmented, it’s also easy to sheer it out for a lighter wash of colour. When worn with primer/foundation, the colour stays true throughout wear.
Naturally, I pulled out 3 versions of Orgasm to compare the new Orgasm X to. In fact, the very first blush I ever purchased from NARS was Orgasm (above, you can clearly see how much usage I’ve given it over time), and if memory serves, the one shown in the photo could very well be from the original launch date. Over the years I’ve received other Orgasm blushes — some in sets, others solo — and I’ve noticed that these newer versions are slightly pinker in tone and with less pronounced shimmer. The more recent releases also have a softer texture that’s easier to blend out. Super Orgasm, in comparison, is closer tonally to Orgasm X, but with more pronounced shimmer and somewhat larger glitter flecks. You can also see a more detailed review on Orgasm blush here.
Orgasm X Oil-Infused Lip Tint (CAN $34.00) | I first tried this formula with the recently released Bronzing Collection (reviewed here) and I’m hooked! The texture is a real sensorial experience; slick but not oily and delivering instant yet still long-lasting hydration. Infused with Pomegranate Extract, Raspberry Seed Oil, along with Vitamins A & E — all for antioxidant protection plus a nourishing lip feel, this luxurious gel-oil comes in a lovely sheer shimmering deep coral shade with gold pearl for extra gleam. With an overall non-sticky feel, its emollient nature means that you’ll definitely need to reapply, but I personally have no problem with that whatsoever.
I’m going to call it right here & now: I sincerely love each and every piece of this collection. For me, the true standouts are the eyeshadow palettes, in particular Orgasm X — but only because my preference leans towards berry hues. I also find that the Orgasm X Cheek Palette to be quite versatile, as it has both blushes and a highlighter, which in effect gives you definitely more bang for your buck. In case you’re interested, there are a couple more pieces in the collection which I don’t have, namely the Mini Orgasm Eyeshadow Palette (CAN $33.00) and the Ultimate Orgasm Set (CAN $65.00). Go on … you know you want them.
