NARS · 7 Deadly Sins Palette & Brow Perfector

Spinning transgressions into beauty might seem like quite the stretch, yet somehow NARS has managed that with the release of the 7 Deadly Sins Palette, turning something with ominous biblical overtones into a little work of lip art. To go with this palette are the brand’s new Brow Perfectors — straightforward pencils that need no instruction manual on use. Yes, please.

7 Deadly Sins Audacious Lipstick Palette, limited edition (CAN $65.00) | This slim-profile compact with its lip-print cover that depicts all seven hues of the palette, also includes a full-sized mirror on the inner lid & a separate [capped] lip brush. The shades are all in the brand’s Audacious formula: wonderfully creamy with high pigment coverage, and coming to a semi-matte finish. Healthy dose of poetic license aside, these shades may draw inspiration from the ‘seven deadly sins’, but that’s as far as it goes; instead, what it holds are colours that run the gamut from soft nude, sultry red, to lushly deep wine.

I’m usually not a fan of lip palettes in general, probably because I prefer my lippies easy; just swipe & go. That said, there are several positives in a compact such as this. For starters, you get seven absolutely wearable hues, all conveniently housed in one travel-friendly palette. Each shade is well sized, making it easy to apply — wether with a brush or a finger. Finally, it comes down to the formula and in that respect, Audacious definitely ranks as one of the better ones out there, no doubt about it. As to application, the brush is actually quite effective — even for doing precision work, but I do find it rather small to lay down a broader sweep of colour, so I prefer switching to one of my larger brushes for the job, and may even finish off by by using my finger to press the colour down into the lips. With regards to the shades, all apply easily and perform equally well, although I did find the deepest hue a bit challenging; that said, blotting it down and wearing it more as a stain worked just fine.

Brow Perfector (CAN $29.00/each) | I almost feel like NARS decided to go old school with the release of these latest brow pencils … and I couldn’t be happier. Brow creams, pomades, gels, and crayons, scare me to be honest; I’m not one for that unrealistic-looking “Instagram” brow, nor do I want all the extra fuss. What makes this version work, is that the oval-shaped tip works beautifully both for precision/detail work, as well as with shaping — while the spoolie on the other end is just long enough & dense enough to help tame any strays and keep everything in place. It should be noted that the pencil leans toward the harder side, although that’s easily solved by warming it up against your hand before going in with application. Bonus points scored for its retractible format, however.

Available in 4 more shades, not shown.

  • Calimyrna – blonde warm
  • Moanda – auburn warm
  • Näia – medium brown cool
  • Komo – medium brown warm

François Nars is the undisputed king of provocatively named products, but he also delivers: name aside, the 7 Deadly Sins Palette is an excellent way to explore the brand’s Audacious lipstick formula and makes for a great travel companion as well — just remember that it’s limited edition. As to the Brow Perfectors, I’ve been using them in conjunction with my usual favourite, and their attached spoolie makes the deal even sweeter. Nothing groundbreaking here … but plenty of good performers which makes everything here rather refreshing, in fact.
