The recent CHANEL Métiers d’Art 2021 Collection was intended to be viewed in person at the 16th-century Château de Chenonceau (more commonly known as the “Château de Dames”) and while the runway show did indeed take place there, thanks to the current pandemic it ended up seen only virtually. Not that it lessened the grandeur one bit, mind you …
Château de Chenonceau
When Virginie Viard — Creative Director for CHANEL, was scouting out the location, she was stunned to discover that Catherine de Medici, once the doyenne of the castle and wife of King Henry II, had as her personal symbol a pair of interlocking “Cs” — an image that is so similar to the instantly recognizable iconic CHANEL logo and which forms the the backbone of the brand’s DNA.
The distinctive checkerboard floor where the show was actually staged, also served as inspiration for the minimalistic colour theme seen on both the beauty look and the exquisite fashion.
« The collection embodies the Renaissance spirit. It is a very modern interpretation of strong women owning their power. The makeup is graphic and strong, it exaggerates the eyes into a bigger, wider shape. The look emphasizes black and matte on the eyes with clear shiny lips and a blurry matte skin.” (Lucia Pica, Global Creative Makeup & Colour Designer for CHANEL)
Hear me out: what I appreciate the most about this beauty look, is the simplicity. Granted, the eyes are quite bold, but paired against the neutral effect of skin, lips, and nails, it somehow lessens the drama of the eyes and turns them into a crisp focal point instead … a look that totally works with our mask-wearing norm. The other benefit I see is that even if you don’t own the exact products used, this is a look that can easily be recreated with what you probably already have in your stash AND does not require makeup-artist skill to achieve. I call that a win-win.
