What happens when two Japanese powerhouses collaborate? You get the shu uemura onitsuka tiger collection and while at first glance it might seem an odd pairing, both happen to be pioneers in their respective fields, holding status as heritage Japanese brands. Major cool-factor aside, I’m also really vibing on the entire aesthetic of this collection.
Onitsuka Tiger (aka: Japanese brand Asics) partnered up with shu uemura to create a limited edition shoe, model DELEGATION EX. Featuring black and summer orange brush strokes against a glossy “Tokyo” red background, the sneaker is made with the brand’s groundbreaking footwear technology to provide loads of comfort alongside its stylish profile.
You guys know I’m ALL about beauty but if you follow me on Instagram, then you’re also aware that I’m majorly into tennis (and I even began skiing last winter — which I totally now love!), so when this package arrived, I confess to spending more time admiring the sneakers than the makeup. The best part is that these shoes are a perfect fit as well as super comfortable (finding shoes that don’t kill my feet is not easy, let me tell you). Plus, how cool are they?!
beyond the limit eye palette, limited edition (CAN $115.00) | Housed in a zippered cushioned plastic case that features blue & red brush strokes on the cover, it contains 8 full-sized eyeshadow shades and a mirror on the inner lid. One of two palettes released with this collection (the other is called set the motion, not shown), the finishes range between pearl, glitter, and matte.
Interestingly enough, while my comfort zone lies in neutral eyeshadows, I admit to being totally drawn to both the orange and blue in this palette — both definitely outrageous & bold hues, but stunning just the same. The texture on all is buttery smooth and highly pigmented and surprisingly, there’s minimal fallout with the glitters. Staying power over primer is excellent and in my opinion, I love how this palette is not only travel friendly, but also offers up so many look options that can take you from ethereal all the way to full-on.
- 1-1 oyster with pink sparkle
- 1-2 matte orange
- 1-3 pearl peach
- 1-4 matte ivory
- 1-5 rust sparkle
- 1-6 soft mauve pearl
- 1-7 matte vivid blue
- 1-8 gold sparkle
seal brown hard formula eyebrow pencil, limited edition (CAN $30.00) | I’m not complicated when it comes to my brows and for years now, my Holy Grail has been shu uemura’s Hard N°9 Oak Brown pencil — the current one I’m using is now down to a stump, in fact. So the arrival of this one couldn’t have come at a better time and while the shade is somewhat lighter, it turns out to still match my brows quite well. Online you’ll see that the pencil is shaved into a “naginata” shape which honours the traditional Japanese blade used by Samurai warriors. I’m going to stick with a traditional pencil sharpener, lol.
“This unique eyebrow pencil has been beloved for over 25 years. This eyebrow pencil has an oil activated formula: color only shows with natural oil that is on the eyebrow. This unique formula consists of a mix of powder, wax, and small amounts of semi-solid oil, a winning combination that delivers the perfect hardness for ultimate precision with a powdery texture that works well with foundation upon application. The result is a natural and defined brow look. Smudge-proof and long-lasting.”
The reason why this is my ride or die brow pencil, is because it delivers. A sharpened tip will obviously yield fine & precise strokes, but I usually round it out a touch for more overall colour (perfect for filling in any patchy areas). This formula does not budge, flake, or otherwise move around — another huge selling point.
summer orange eyelash curler, limited edition (CAN $26.00) | Years ago, this curler was the first tool of its kind that I tried when I began curling my lashes prior to mascara application — and has been my go-to since then (the other one I reach for is from CHANEL, but I believe that’s now discontinued). Its curved angled shape lifts and grabs all hairs and the silicone padding ensures your lashes stay protected. This limited edition version has all that AND comes in a fun summer orange colour along with the sneaker charm. I mean, how cute is that?
summer punch rouge unlimited lacquer shine, limited edition (CAN $37.00) | Housed in a rectangular white lacquered casing that features the onitsuka tiger logo as well as blue & red brush strokes, this is a glossy lipstick with a “super wet finish and a melting sensation” upon application. Stated as coming to a translucent finish, the colour saturation is pretty amazing and provides full coverage from the first stroke. This tomato red shade is definitely warm leaning and has one of the creamiest textures I’ve felt to date. Coming to a super high-gloss finish, reapplication will obviously be necessary but it also fades to a nice stain. Personally, I find that shu uemura lipsticks fly under most peoples’ radar but in truth they’re incredibly well crafted and definitely worth looking into.
ultime8 sublime beauty cleansing oil, limited edition (CAN $100.00) | My first experience with cleansing oil was with this brand and that was many years ago. Since then, I’ve tried others and with the exception of a few, this is the one I always come back to. Infused with Japanese Tsubaki Oil (aka: Camellia Japonica Oil) which is a rich source of oleic acid, polyphenols, Vitamins A, D, E & C as well as other antioxidants, this oil is effective at removing all traces of makeup (I personally don’t use it along eyes, however) and provides a thorough cleansing without stripping the skin of moisture — all this without leaving any oily residue behind.
Thanks to the current pandemic, this collection came to me much later than it should have, but summer is still here (at least for a short while more) and everything I’ve shown is still available online. The sneakers, on the other hand, might be a little harder to track down but one never knows, am I right? All in all, this is an edgy and well executed collection — but I expected nothing less from this brand.
