OSEA Malibu Skin Care

Several weeks ago I was invited to discover a new (to me) skincare range, OSEA Malibu, where I sat down for an intimate chat with the founder’s son, David Denberg. In truth, I’m always excited to learn about products that can have a positive impact — especially where my skin is concerned, and it was also a pleasant surprise to learn first-hand how this unique brand came about. Then again, the fact that its very name conjures up images of the ocean, probably would have won me over anyway …

With David Denberg, son of founder Jenefer Palmer

Representing the core elements of wellness, OSEA stands for: Ocean ♦ Sun ♦ Earth ♦ Atmosphere. First launched in 1996, the brand was founded by Jenefer Palmer who has extensive experience in the wellness industry, and who looked to create a range of products that were free of potentially toxic ingredients, cheap fillers, dyes, and fragrances, and that would instead provide the skin with the benefits of nature’s immense bounty. Inspired by her grandmother’s love of the ocean’s natural curative properties, the star ingredients are three types of ethically sourced bioavailable seaweed:

  • Gigartina Skottsbergii – a red marine algae rich in trace elements iodine & bromine, as well as sulphated polychaccharides  — known to deeply hydrate skin and help reduce fine lines
  • Undaria Pinnatifida – a brown marine algae rich in sodium, iron, potassium, calcium and Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 & B12 which also contains Fucocidan, a particularly hydrating compound that helps to promote skin’s plumpness
  • Macrocystis Pyrifera – (commonly known as Giant Bladder Kelp), the largest of all marine algae and contains high levels of iodine, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Helps to reduce the appearance of blemishes and surface redness, while also improving skin texture and tone

Used in powder, whole leaf, and extract forms, these seaweeds hail from a remote corner of Patagonia, ethically harvested by one single source farmer and in a completely bioavailable way. Basically, this means that the harvest is done in a way that works with nature (gently hand-harvested and allowed to dry naturally in the sun), as opposed to stripping it of one of its most precious resources. Using one source also means that there is full control in how many hands are involved in the process, thereby ensuring only the purest form of these incredible ingredients are included in product formulation.

These are the four products I was gifted at the meet-up, but note that the range includes several more, including bodycare. The packaging is quite simple; glass containers (plastic can out-gas, as opposed to glass which is more hygienic) with just a [recycled] paper outer sleeve that’s basically there more for protection, than any ‘look’. Elegant, clean & no frills.

ocean cleansing milk (CAN $60.00) | Excellent for all skin types, this is a milky cleanser that foams up lightly when emulsified with water. Star ingredients include:

  • Algae Extract – contains potent vitamins and minerals. Hydrates dry skin and reinforces the appearance of a healthy, balanced, moisture-rich complexion
  • Cassie Flower (Acacia Farnesiana) – has a light protectivie emollient effect on skin
  • DPHP (Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline) an amino acid compound that visibly reduces the signs of aging and provides an overall smoothing effect
  • Rose Flower (Rosa Centifolia) – hydrates, brightens, soothes and softens skin. Also perfect for sensitive skin types
  • Water Lily Extract – helps to visibly diminish surface redness and irritation for a soft, hydrated complexion

What makes this cleanser unique in my trials, is the fact not only does it perform very efficiently in cleansing off basically all traces of makeup — and this by using my hands alone and not with a device, followed up by the ‘white towel’ test (which I’m happy to report came away clean), but leaves my skin feeling comfortable, and not stripped of all moisture.

hyaluronic sea serum (CAN $110.00) | This serum contains a high level of Hyaluronic Acid (which attracts up t0 1000X its weight in water and thus helps to swiftly plump — as well as maintain — the skin’s moisture barrier. Star ingredients include:

  • Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide. With the ability to hold up to 1000X its weight in water, it helps to flood skin with long lasting hydration and strengthen the moisture barrier — derived from the plant-based bacterial fermentation of Bacillus Subtilis. Includes 3 molecular weights of Hyaluronic Acid and 3 types of seaweed extracts to help boost skin with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

The slightly gelatinous texture of the serum is quite intriguing; the dropper dispenses enough product per pump to effectively cover the entire face, neck and even the décolleté, and once applied it literally sinks into the skin without a trace. The colour is naturally derived and there is absolutely no discernible scent. Basically, you can go in right away with applying a moisturizer, as no wait time is necessary (yay!).

advanced protection cream (CAN $120.00) | Created more for dry and sensitive skin types, this is a rich cream with a hybrid gel/cream texture that is meant to deeply moisturize while also helping to firm the skin. Star ingredients include:

  • Algae Extract – contains potent vitamins and minerals. Hydrates dry skin and reinforces the appearance of a healthy, balanced, moisture-rich complexion
  • Avocado Oil (Persea Gratissima) – firms skin and helps diminish the appearance of wrinkles. Rich in vitamin E
  • DPHP (Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline) – an amino acid compound that visibly reduces the signs of aging and provides an overall smoothing effect
  • Grapeseed Oil (Vitis Vinifera) – this lightweight, rapidly absorbed oil hydrates and helps smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Rich in essential fatty acids
  • Macadamia Seed Oil (Macadamia Ternifolia) – a lightweight botanical oil rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Deeply hydrates skin and visibly reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

My skin is normal/combination with an oily T-Zone, although as I’ve gotten older I’ve definitely seen the need for more hydration. Living in a climate with such extremes (fierce cold in the Winter, crazy high humidity in the Summer) has also taken a toll on my complexion and I’ve been reaching for richer moisturizers as a result. In testing out this product I noticed a couple of interesting things; firstly, my skin seems to drink it in — surprising, considering its rich nature, and secondly, in the morning my skin in general appears more matte with my pores looking smaller as well — this is incredible, as usually when I wake up, my skin actually has a bit of a sheen to it. A welcome surprise, indeed.

That said, one other thing I noticed was that the texture of my skin did not feel as smooth as I preferred so I decided to add in one of my absolute favourite products — Mineral 89 from Vichy (which really deserves its own post) — as a first step after cleansing, and it made an obvious difference. To be fair, I can’t be sure if it was this change or the fact that 3 weeks into testing my skin began behaving differently, but I couldn’t be happier with the way my complexion looks now. Oh, and my tone is significantly more even-looking AND (it might be just my imagination, but I have to put this out there), my skin actually feels firmer. It’s hard to pinpoint, but let’s just say that I noticed.

anti-aging body balm (CAN $60.00) | And now we come to the product that I am so TOTALLY loving. This silky body balm is good for all skin types, and helps to intensely nourish while at the same time firming the skin. Star ingredients include:

  • Acai Pulp Oil (Euterpe Oleracea) – rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Deeply hydrates, firms and plumps dry skin
  • Babassu Seed Oil (Orbignea Oleifera) – a fast absorbing oil, Babassu is one of nature’s richest moisturizers. Adds luster to skin with no greasy residue
  • Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera) – packed with essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants. The ultimate skin superfood, coconut oil firms and smoothes skin and minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Geranium Flower Oil (Pelargonium Graveolens) – decongests and reduces surface irritation while promoting healthy looking, glowing skin. Provides a sweet floral aroma
  • Passion Fruit Seed Oil (Passiflora Edulis) – loaded with vitamins A & C and essential fatty acids. Hydrates, helps promote a firm, youthful appearance and protects against environmental aggressors

To begin with, a little really goes a long way; I made the mistake of applying one pump of product onto one leg and I was literally trying to rub it in for EONS. Lesson learned, I now go in with smaller pumps. The texture is unlike anything I’ve experienced before as well; it’s as if melted wax was fused with oil — but nothing heavy or greasy, and it leaves a light sheen behind on the skin upon initial application, but which ultimately becomes absorbed (it takes a good 10 minutes for that). The scent is positively addictive: reminds me of herbs and green flowers and the best feature of all? How nourished my skin feels … even hours later. So much love for this product, let me tell you.

I’m fortunate to be involved in an industry where I get to try so many different brands — although I’m quite strict in which products will actually make the cut to the ‘clinical trial’ phase. Testing skincare is also subject to many variables and as I can only speak for myself and what works for me, I leave it up to you to decide whether a product I’ve reviewed meets your own needs. All I know after a month of consistent (you might even say religious) testing, is that I see and even feel the results. Am I 20 years younger-looking? No, but my skin sure feels firm and appears quite even-toned and what’s more, applying makeup on this new smoother ‘canvas’ is a breeze. Yes, it’s a range loved by many celebrities (who happen to be quite discerning, I might add), and yes, my beloved ocean plays a huge role in the entire concept but at the end of the day, it’s a personal thing … although you should do yourself a favour and check OSEA Malibu out, just the same, no?

Thank you for your comment, but as I’m not a medical professional and as these products are not mine (I don’t formulate products), your best bet would be to ether contact the brand directly or speak with a dermatologist.

What are your thoughts, beautiful?
