Revlon Colorstay 16 Hour Eye Shadow Palettes | Rio Rush Collection by Gucci Westman

Revlon Rio Rush Eyeshadow palettes opener

For the Summer 2014 launch of the limited edition Rio Rush Collection, Revlon Global Artistic Director, Gucci Westman, takes inspiration from the vibrancy, passionate music, & intense colour of Brazil’s “Carnaval”. The two limited edition eye shadow palettes shown here, #583 Exotic and #587 Wild, are designed to offer long-wearing, smudge, and crease-proof colour, in sizzling hot tropical hues.

Colour this vivid, especially coming from a mass-market brand, is rather unexpected but Revlon found a way to actually makes these hues totally wearable, and while the pale/neutrals in each palette are nothing we haven’t seen before, the matte/colourful shades more than make up for that.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away … ok, not exactly, but many years ago – back to the Summer I turned 15 and was finally allowed to wear makeup (growing up with Greek parents had its drawbacks, as far as indulging in my beauty-obsession went), my first ever eye shadow palette was from Revlon – and from that time on, the brand has held a special place in my memory.

*Congratulations goes out to Germany on winning FIFA World Cup 2014! I love how today’s post somehow ties in with that, being a Rio inspired collection (the games were held in Brazil) and even the combined shades of the 2 compacts call to mind Germany’s colours. Coincidence?!

Revlon Exotic palette

#583 Exotic Colorstay™ 16 Hour Eye Shadow, limited edition (CAN $12.95) – The four shades of the #583 Exotic palette are comprised of 1 highlighter in a shimmery oyster hue, a satin/matte purple, matte canary yellow, and a satin/matte black (which actually looks more charcoal upon application). Colour payoff varies amongst the 4, especially when worn dry; the oyster hue is almost unnoticeable against my skin tone, but could serve as a good layering base, while both the purple and ebony shades apply much lighter than you’d expect, given their deep tones. The yellow shade bears the highest in colour saturation, regardless of whether it’s worn dry or wet, although there’s an overall higher intensity yielded from all four when applied with a dampened brush. I experienced some powdery kickback when I swirled my brush across the shades – easily solved by tapping the excess off first. The shades blend easily enough, and as far as staying power goes, I can’t vouch for 16 hours (I make it a point to not wear eye makeup for that length of time), but they all seemed to stand up well during a normal day’s wearing.

The back of each palette yields a diagram for shade placement which may be useful to some, although totally unnecessary in my opinion – as is the little foam applicator in each compact (why do brands insist in putting those dinky little things in there?).

Revlon Rio Rush Wild palette

#587 Wild Colorstay™ 16 Hour Eye Shadow, limited edition (CAN $12.95) – The 4 shades of the #587 Wild palette are comprised of 1 highlighter hue – this time in a frosty white, a soft champagne shimmer, a matte teal, and a matte paprika. The two paler hues of this compact have the lightest colour payoff, with the 2 matte shades giving the most (and overall effortless) colour saturation. When applied with a dampened brush, the difference appears mainly with the lighter shades as they both appear somewhat more defined (the white in particular is rather sparse & a touch chalky when applied dry), although the darker shades just come off as a couple of degrees deeper. I experienced powdery kickback with the lighter hues of this compact as well, but nothing that a good tapping before application couldn’t solve. The two matte hues are actually rather exceptional along with being quite unique colour-wise – more than worth picking this palette up, if only for those two hues. With regards to staying power, I would say this quad averaged the same length of time as the previous one.

Available for a limited time, the two Revlon Rio Rush Collection by Gucci Westman Colorstay™ 16 Hour Eye Shadow palettes (yeah…that’s quite a mouthful) are a fun way of adding a punch of colour to your eye makeup wardrobe, without breaking the bank. If asked to choose between them, my pick goes to #587 Wild for its stunning mattes, although the yellow in #583 Exotic is truly original and so Summer-perfect. At these prices, why not get both?!

These look so pretty but I don’t think I’d be brave enough to pull them off!

Don’t let the intensity of some of the shades scare you; the deeper hues can be applied as a light wash of colour while a vivid like yellow makes for a unique pop of accent colour!

  2. Both of these are absolutely stunning. The drugstore has really stepped it up in terms of formulation and quality.

What are your thoughts, beautiful?
