It’s pretty much impossible to not look at this collection and smile, am I right? For Holiday 2017, two Japanese icons, Shu Uemura & Super Mario Bros. have teamed up to create this limited edition grouping of what has got to be the “funnest” beauty collection out there. Cartoon kitsch aside, there are some parallels here worth noting, namely: using colour to pursue one’s goals (Go, Mario, GO!) and even more importantly, that beauty should never take itself too seriously. Let the chase begin!
Princess Peach & Super Mario
Peach’s Eye and Cheek Palette (CAN $125.00) | Housed in a candy pink compact with the game’s pixelated characters on the cover, this palette includes 6 eyeshadows and 2 blushes. True to the brand’s aesthetic that merges art, beauty, design, and lifestyle (to name but a few, in fact), the shades all compliment each other and work harmoniously together. All 6 eyeshadow colours have varying degrees of complex shimmer, solid pigmentation & blendability, coupled with great staying power — when worn over primer. The two blushes leave behind the most interesting sheen when applied, and can be repurposed for other uses as well; both can be used as eyeshadows and/or transition eyeshadow shades, the orange can work as a natural-looking highlighter on those with darker complexions, and combining the two creates a stunning new fresh peachy hue.

Drawing Pencil (CAN $28.00) | To say these these pencils are creamy yet ridiculously long-wearing, wouldn’t be a lie. The texture is soft — but not overly so that they risk breaking off — making them not only easy to lay down, but respectful of the delicate skin around eyes. Each provides a dense & rich matte colour payoff but if planning to blend out, I suggest working one eye at a time to prevent them from setting before you’re done.
NOTE: 2 other shades available, Brick Brown & Light Orange
Brave Amber Fresh Cushion Blush (CAN $45.00) | I can’t be the only one who has an obsession with cushion makeup, right? With a lightweight texture and a cooling sensation felt upon the skin upon initial application, this universally flattering peachy/amber blush hue is perfect for those who want a natural-looking flush of colour. Easily built up for more intensity, all you really need are fingers for the easiest application, although the included flat dense sponge works great to buff any edges out. As to staying power, I get an easy 7 hours when worn over foundation.
NOTE: 1 more shade available, Dreamy Mauve
Rouge Unlimited Lipstick (CAN $36.00) | Setting the tone, are the hot pink transparent casings of these lipsticks ♥ This brand’s Rouge Unlimited range is truly well-crafted, although some hues can be a bit tricky to pull off — so NOT the case with either of these shades. I tend to shy away from pink lipsticks, but the lightweight & shiny finish of Stage Cleared adds a nice touch of bright fun colour to lips without looking juvenile, plus it fades to a nice rose stain. The texture of the Rouge Unlimited Mattes are seriously some of my faves, applying smoothly and without over-emphasizing lip lines while feeling so, so comfortable throughout the wearing. Staying power on RD 187 is pretty phenomenal, even through eating and drinking, without any noticeable bleeding into surrounding skin. Bonus: leaves a nice ruby stain behind when the majority of colour has [finally] faded.
NOTE: 2 more Supreme Matte shades available: M PK375 & M PK376 and 1 more Sheer Shine: Saved Peach
- Stage Cleared (Rouge Unlimited Sheer Shine Lipstick) – shiny cotton candy pink
- RD 187 (Rouge Unlimited Supreme Matte Lipstick) – matte true red
Stage Performer Block:Booster Protective Moisture Primer (CAN $48.00) | As someone who tends to skip wearing primer unless I’m creating a more detailed makeup look, I also appreciate that this step can sometimes make the difference between a mediocre and a great application. Adding to that, Shu Uemura’s version also includes SPF 50 for sun protection as well as ingredients that block air pollution from adhering to skin. The universally wearable Natural Beige shown here, blends out easily and also serves to impart a touch of radiance to skin, although it may be a touch heavy for those with oily to combination skin types. Also available in Fresh Pink
Skin Perfector [Yuzu] Makeup Refresher Mist (CAN $34.00) | Makeup setting mists are fairly ubiquitous by now and I personally love spritzing my face every chance I get; before makeup, to set makeup, and even to refresh makeup throughout the day. I honestly cannot resist. This [Yuzu] version (Yuzu is a Japanese citrus that provides a “profound sense of well being”) has a fresh herbal/fruity fragrance and feels cooling to the touch initially, and I find it so useful in giving my makeup/skin a jolt of freshness throughout wear. Plus it smells sooooo good. Also available in [Sakura] (cherry blossom)
Peach’s Favourite Premium Brush Set (CAN $89.00) | The Japanese have a long history of creating some of the most exquisite makeup brushes, and I have several Shu Uemura favourites that I reach for all the time. The grouping shown here, comes housed in a playful round case and includes 4 basic brushes that are perfect to travel with. The bristles are all super soft upon the skin — regardless of whether they’re synthetic or not — and are well crafted to withstand multiple washings. Plus, that zipper pull is EVERYTHING.
- Face Brush – goat hair
- Cheek Brush – synthetic fibre
- Eyeshadow Brush – synthetic fibre
- Eyeliner & Lip Brush – synthetic fibre
There’s something about this brand that has fascinated me for decades; long before I purchased my first Shu Uemura brush (a concealer brush that I still use to this day), I loved the seeming simplicity of each product but it wasn’t until I delved deeper into the range, that I understood the hidden complexities. Granted, not all items have floated my boat, but I always appreciate the artistry behind each collection. That said, there’s zero ambivalence here: this collection has nailed it at all levels (see what I did there? #videogamereference) and is in a word: FUN.
