Elizabeth Arden · Prevage City Smart, Prevage Anti-Aging Foundation & Always Red Femme
Some brands seem to fly under the radar, yet in my opinion, they also happen to release some of the most amazing products out there. Elizabeth Arden is one such brand, and apart from some pretty awesome colour cosmetics (some of their past bronzers are to die for), they also happen to make one of my absolute favourite skincare ranges, Prevage.
Elizabeth Arden | Superstart Skin Renewal Booster
In early June, I was invited to attend the Elizabeth Arden Global Symposium in New York City (travel blogpost coming soon), where I not only had the opportunity to sit down and pick the brains of some of the beauty industry’s finest, but learned that there’s much more to the Stratum Corneum – our skin’s surface layer – than previously imagined.
During the symposium, we were introduced to Arden’s new skincare philosophy called Arden Active Skincare, whose aim (with the benefit of the brand’s extensive portfolio of skincare products) is to assist us in optimizing and actively improving our skin’s overall healthy appearance. Our skin is, after all, our body’s largest organ and while the focus of late has been on products designed to work from the inside out, Elizabeth Arden has gone back to the drawing board to look at things from another perspective: start at the beginning. Here’s where Superstart comes in, a product created to be used first in your skincare regimen (after cleansing) to set the defence perimeter up, so to speak.
This breakthrough product is marking the beginning of a whole new beauty category, one which addresses the health of the skin’s surface layer; when used before your serum or moisturizer, the ultra-light and fast-absorbing formula of Superstart Skin Renewal Booster will help provide ‘daily support to the surface layer of the skin, boost its natural defences & ability to renew itself, while ultimately optimizing the results of your entire skincare regimen‘.
Some of the key ingredients include:
- Probiotic Complex – a complex that provides the skin with complimentary pre-probiotic action that not only triggers an improvement in the appearance of the skin with a nourishing and smoothing effect, but also optimizes skin’s microflora and natural defenses
- Sea Fennel – this rare Mediterranean coastal plant with its unique ability to survive on rocks despite regular exposure to intense waves, enhances skin cell renewal and epidermal differentiation to help increase luminosity, skin smoothness, and the complexion. It also contains antioxidant properties that help to scavenge and fight off free radicals that lead to skin damage and signs of aging
- Flaxseed Extract – this plant see extract helps to reinforce skin’s barrier and encourages skin to sustain optimal lipid levels
- Glasswort Extract – derived from a coastal succulent, it helps boost skin’s natural moisturization by optimizing Aquaporins, skin’s hydrating channels, and reducing water loss within the skin
Now, if you’re like me, you’re probably thinking that the last thing you need to add to your already overloaded skincare regimen, is yet ANOTHER step (ye GODS), and while I confess to that being my initial thought, after testing Superstart since my return from that media trip, consider me a believer. A devoted believer, in fact. Possibly even a Superstart fanatic.
And for crying out loud, it’s just one small pearl size drop I’ve added to my skincare routine, not an entire vat … doesn’t get easier than that.
I have to also add here, that upon arrival back to my hotel room after the Symposium, I was greeted with an amazing press package: the new Superstart Skin Renewal Booster, housed in a box that when opened up, began playing the latest video campaign from Elizabeth Arden featuring the new face of the brand, supermodel Karlina Caune (who’s just the nicest and most down-to-earth young woman … plus kick-ass gorgeous). How cool is that? (Yeah, I’m like a child and can be amused for hours with pretty pictures, lol)

Superstart Skin Renewal Booster (CAN $88.00) | Housed in a futuristic-looking slim silver bottle with gold banding & lettering that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, the product is dispensed from a nozzle in front, and locks securely closed via a toggle switch on the back. The milky fluid is of a medium consistency that feels initially cool to the touch (a sensation that quickly dissipates), spreads effortlessly and becomes fully absorbed into the skin within seconds, leaving absolutely no filmy feeling behind. Superstart does contain fragrance – a fresh, green-floral scent that I personally find very pleasing – but worth noting for those with sensitivities. Application is very easy: I dispense one pearl-size drop (1 pump) onto my fingertips and then place my other hand on top to spread the product out; using a ‘press/pat’ motion, I apply it to my entire face, with any leftover going to the neck and earlobes, then lightly smoothening it all into my skin.
As much as I adore colour cosmetics, the past few years have seen my obsession with skincare on a meteoric rise – most likely induced by the fact that I myself am getting older (duh) and understand that the better care I take of my skin, the bigger the rewards (i.e.: smoother skin, which translates into more youthful-looking skin, which means I’ll need less makeup to look good, which means my makeup will look better, in general. Win-Win). When I was at the Symposium learning about Superstart, I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first; apart from the fact that using this meant adding an extra product to my daily/nightly skincare routine, why would I need it anyway? Wasn’t my regular regimen enough?
The answer, surprisingly, was no. The concept is interesting: think of the stratum corneum as a brick wall; cells filled with proteins (the ‘bricks’) are embedded in essential lips (the ‘mortar’). The extracts found in Superstart act as a support system to help bolster and reinforce the integrity of this all-important surface layer, or ‘brick wall’, and when skin has a healthy stratum corneum, it can better protect itself from the environment, toxins and irritants. In other words, you’re basically letting your skin do the work for you. How’s that for a lazy girl’s guide to better skin? Of course, Superstart is designed to be the first line of defense – you shouldn’t skip the rest of your regimen.
Within just a few days of consistent application of Superstart, I noticed a difference; my skin did in fact feel smoother, which resulted in a more even-toned overall appearance, with the other benefit being that I in turn then needed less of my skincare products to do the same job as before, all of which then translates to getting more for my money’s worth in general … along with the supreme perk of gorgeous skin. Not bad for 1 pearl sized drop, huh? Another bonus? Superstart works with all other skincare brands/regimens, making it a simple and welcome addition to whatever it is you’re currently using.
Verdict: after 2 entire months of twice-daily use (and the bottle is still not showing signs of being empty), I love the effect Superstart has had on my skin and will definitely continue to use it. Just try and take it away from me.

Elizabeth Arden continues to be a pioneer in the area of skincare innovation, and first out of the gate with this latest breakthrough, is Superstart. Seems almost too simple to be true, right? Or, better still, why hasn’t anyone thought of this before? I mean, doesn’t it stand to reason that if we help our surface layer of skin to protect itself, it will enable us to better manage the rest? Imagine that … the poor stratum corneum – so obvious, and yet so overlooked. But never fear, Superstart‘s got your back. And front.

Elizabeth Arden | Sunkissed Pearls Bronzer and Highlighter (LE)
Maybe it’s because I’m a Summer-baby (born in July), or possibly because I always wanted to be a mermaid (my lack of strong swimming skills basically killed that idea), or most likely because I am still obsessed with – and constantly reach for – last year’s limited edition bronzers from Elizabeth Arden, but the minute I laid eyes (see my preview post here) on this Sunkissed Pearls Bronzer and Highlighter (created by the incredibly talented Rebecca Restreppo – Global Makeup Artist for Elizabeth Arden, and one of the most genuine women it has ever been my pleasure to meet)) with its seashell and pearl pattern, the anticipation began to build: it would be mine.
Elizabeth Arden | Sunkissed Pearls Bronzer and Highlighter, ingredients list
Elizabeth Arden | Sunkissed Pearls Bronzer and Highlighter with demi-lune brush
Sunkissed Pearls Bronzer and Highlighter in Warm Pearl 01 (CAN $48.00) is a gorgeous trio in a clamshell/pearl embossed pattern that consists of 2 bronzing shades (lighter tan on the left/largest portion – deeper tan on the right) and a softly shimmering pink highlighter hue, which also comes with an included silver metallic demi-lune brush, in a pearly white case with a large clear window on the cover (made in Italy – major points scored for that). The quality of the brush is surprisingly good, with a wide enough shape to apply broad sweeps of colour but with enough density to the bristles that it can also be used along its side for more precise application. That being said, I still prefer using my own brushes for the job just the same (I usually use several brushes for bronzer application, so maybe it’s a personal thing).
Key ingredients:
- Vitamin E – protectant against environmental stressors which contribute to visible signs of aging
- Argan Oil – rich in beneficial nutrients including fatty acids, to help keep skin feeling soft and moisturized
- Illuminating Microlight Minerals – optical diffusers that work to scatter light and soften the look of fine lines and wrinkles
The quality of the two tan powders is buttery soft and non-powdery whatsoever – the same applies to the highlighter, for the record. The largest & lightest tan portion is camel-coloured and slightly peach/rose tinted, appearing to have more shimmer than the deeper bronzing hue, although that shimmer is so incredibly fine-milled that it serves to add radiance to the face – without being obvious about it. The darker bronzing section is more of a true tan colour, although subtlety is the operating word for the shades of this compact, meaning that it will be hard to overdo things (which is a very good point, where bronzers are concerned). The pink highlighter portion has the most obvious shimmer of the three, but once again it’s so finely milled that it adds luminosity and stays far away from the dreaded mirror-ball effect. It should be stated that while all three hues lean on the warm side, I can definitely see the lighter bronzing portion working beautifully on those with very fair skin, while the highlighter has enough pigmentation to even double as a light blush. For dark/very dark complexions, I suspect that the highlighter section will be the only usable shade of the trio – and will look simply awesome in that capacity.
When all three shades are combined, the effect is a perfect merging of light bronze and light pink reflection (note: the darker bronzing section can be built up for more depth) and fuses beautifully with the skin’s natural oils, giving off a healthy-looking, sun kissed glow. As with all bronzers, these shades “develop”; what that means, is that after initial application, wait a few minutes before adding more as the product will develop & evolve with your skin’s warmth and natural oils. This tip will save you from ever overdoing it, trust me.

Elizabeth Arden | Sunkissed Pearls Bronzer and Highlighter, all three shades blended
I’ve probably said this a million times before, but Elizabeth Arden is a brand that has been flying under most people’s radar for quite some time now – but here’s the thing: the products are truly amazing. As a beauty blogger, I’m fortunate enough to get to try many different brands, while as a consumer I’m also quite selective about which brands finally make it to my vanity table – and all I can say, is that just like last year’s versions, the Sunkissed Pearls Bronzer and Highlighter delivers. I personally wish it were also available in a darker triad of shades, but since the entire scope of the collection is more about an ethereal aquatic theme, then this grouping makes sense. With regards to packaging, I’m a little torn; on the one hand, the plastic compact keeps things lightweight and it really is pretty with its pearly gleam, but feels more ‘drugstore’ than ‘department store’ which is so totally at odds with the exceptional quality of the actual product. At the end of the day, it should always be about the quality, but as I’m a sucker for more luxe-looking packaging (especially with a brand like this which totally deserves to be showcased better) I would say that if Elizabeth Arden needs to work on anything, it’s that. Certainly not a deal-breaker however and knowing what I do about their products, that doesn’t stop me from highly recommending this little beauty. Just remember that it is limited edition, so fair warning.

Elizabeth Arden | 2015 Spring/Summer Color Collection & Fragrance launches
Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of attending an Elizabeth Arden media launch held at Newtown, Montréal, where we were treated to gorgeous visual displays of Elizabeth Arden’s Spring/Summer Sunkissed Pearls 2015 Color Collection, along with several new fragrance launches (one of which I can’t reveal just yet, but I can tell you that the bottle is absolutely lovely!). Members of the Elizabeth Arden team were on hand to answer all questions and provide in-depth information on all products, as well as offer makeup touch-ups as well as a personalized foundation colour matching for each guest.
After a brief presentation, we sat down for a delectable lunch along with our host and the Elizabeth Arden team, and the wine – as well as the excellent conversations – were flowing. Capping off the event, we were invited to enjoy the goodies on offer at the overflowing candy bar (I may or may not have filled a few bags to bring home. For my daughter, of course).
The upcoming Elizabeth Arden Sunkissed Pearls 2015 Color Collection will sport iridescent exterior packaging and includes: cream eye shadow pencils (3 shades), black gel eye liner, a lip gloss trio, and the pièce de résistance, a combination bronzer/highlighter compact – all new. From quick swatches I did at the makeup stations, I was quite impressed with the quality of the cream eye shadow pencils – saturated, complex shimmers, easily blendable and all felt like they were literally gliding along the skin. The gel liner was equally impressive, bearing an intense level of black pigment and an incredibly creamy feel. I did not swatch the bronzer/highlighter, but it doesn’t matter; I’d go for it just for the embossed seashell pattern alone – although if past Elizabeth Arden bronzers are anything to judge by, I just know I’m going to love this one too.
A huge thank you to all involved for having me take part in this wonderful event!

Elizabeth Arden – Ceramide Boosting 5-Minute Facial
Confession: I’ve never had a professional facial (I’ve also never been to a spa or have had a massage either, for that matter insert stunned silence here), but I’ve read countless reports on the experience, and the common thread expressed by all, is how refreshed, revived & glowing their skin feels after. Well, now we can all enjoy that feeling with Elizabeth Arden’s Ceramide Boosting 5-Minute Facial, a two step bi-weekly system to treat and pamper your skin, all in the comfort of your own home.
Merging over 100 years of hands-on spa experience with their cult-fave Ceramide youth restoring skincare technology, has led to the creation of this innovative system that consists of a self-foaming mask to first draw out impurities from the skin, then followed up by a serum to deeply penetrate for maximum effectiveness, leaving you looking like you just spent oodles of money for a luxury treatment.
Housed in 2 cylindrical pump-dispensing containers to preserve the integrity of the ingredients, this system is meant to be used 1-2 times per week (or as the perfect prep before a special occasion) and as a replacement for the Ceramide Capsules Daily Youth Restoring Serum (or your usual moisturizer)
Key Ingredients (Self-Foaming Mask):
- Lactic Acid & Protease Enzyme – a combination of alpha hydroxy acids and an enzyme that gently exfoliates and dissolves surface skin-clogging impurities
- Botanical Extracts – a blend of bilberry, sugar cane, sugar maple, orange and lemon botanical extracts, which all contain naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acids that help exfoliate the the skin
- Targeted Peptide – a purifying peptide that helps prime skin for optimum treatment
- Glycerin – a humectant that replenishes skin with moisture
Key Ingredients (Replenishing Serum):
- Ceramide Triple Complex (a targeted blend of Ceramides 1,3 and 6) – helps to restore skin’s protective barrier ad stimulate new ceramide production
- Retinyl Linoleate – a Vitamin A derivative that gently and effectively smoothes the look of fine lines and wrinkles while increasing skin’s firmness
- Red Algae Extract – a marine botanical that helps reduce the look of dark spots while increasing skin’s brightness
- Rice Kefiran and Aloe Vera Gel – an anti-inflammatory duo that soothes, calms and helps heal skin
- Tropical Fruit Extracts – a blend of natural extracts that work together to help plump and firm the look of skin
- Optical Enhancers – a blend of Mica, silicone, silica and pearlescent pigments that instantly blurs fine lines and wrinkles
- Glycerin, DL-Panthenol, Sucrose – a humectant blend that helps support skin’s moisture retention
Sounds like a ton of stuff, doesn’t it? Whatever … as long as it delivers, I’m SO on board.
As the Ceramide Boosting 5-Minute Facial (CAN $100.00) is a 2-step system and should ideally be timed, here are a few tips that worked for me. Prepare by having a clean towel handy & a timer (I use my kitchen/cooking timer) that you pre-set for 2 minutes. Start by dispensing a golf-ball sized dollop of foam from the Self-Foaming Mask into the palm of your hand and then quickly applying that to the face and neck, making sure to avoid the orbital (eye) area. Here’s the cool part: the mask actually seems to foam & bubble up, then about a minute later starts to fizz — right before your eyes! Immediately start timer and as soon as the 2 minutes lapse, completely rinse everything off. Follow up by applying the Replenishing Serum (face + neck), massaging it into the skin with your fingertips until it is completely absorbed, then apply your preferred moisturizer.
I have never thought of myself as particularly sensitive-skinned and usually when products say they “tingle”, I’ve rarely experienced anything at all. Either my skin has changed or this Self-Foaming Mask is quite strong, but the first time I applied it, within 10 seconds I was ready to rinse it all off – it was a tingling sensation bordering on hellfire. For the sake of the review, I endured it and by the time I was ready to rinse it all off, most of the heat had subsided. But STILL, I was a little hesitant to try it again a few days later … but once more, into the breach, as they say. Surprisingly, the second time around, I experienced a strong tingling, but no burning; either I knew what to expect, or my skin was going through some bizarre phase the first time, but I cringed for nothing – it was absolutely fine. The best part, was seeing what my skin looked like once I was done: radiant, renewed, and basically re-booted. For that, I’ll take on the über-tingling any day.

I can’t speak for the long-term benefits of the Ceramide Boosting 5-Minute Facial, but if what a few treatments of using this duo is anything to judge by, I am completely impressed by my results so far. For those who find alpha hydroxy acids too strong or that have ultra sensitive skin, then I strongly suggest a patch test first, as this may prove to be too strong. For everyone else who’s been looking for an at-home skin renewal system but have been disappointed by other brands, then I cannot urge you strongly enough to give this a shot. Just a thought: this would also make a great Mother’s Day gift … or an anytime gift, for that matter!
