Nicole by OPI ‘Wel-Kim to my World’ Collection – new shades (swatches & review)

Even though this collection was a springtime release – and setting aside for a moment that Kim Kardashian is the inspiration behind it all (one either loves her, or hates her, am I right?), I have to say that these 6 shades are just so delicately pretty, and just as wearable now that summer’s heat is fully upon us. Another plus is the inclusion of the 2 “effects” lacquers in the group which effectively double the potential looks you can create – I so love it when that happens!

“Lighthearted” seems to be the theme of this collection, if these pastel shades are anything to go by. Even though they may not be the most unique colours out there, they all still seem to bear a slight twist that manages to make them look modern & fresh. All swatches are with base and top coats. Please note that 2 coats of each shade gives fairly decent coverage and opacity, although for photographic reasons I preferred the more denser look that 3 coats gave (call it a personal quirk).

‘Others Pale by Kim-parison’ is an absolutely beautiful white hue that is prevented from looking harsh due to the blush tints in its base. The first coat applied slightly streaky, which was soon rectified by the second coat, although it still needed one more layer for a deeper opacity. I absolutely loved its softly diffused look and the ultra-glossy shine at the finish. Coats applied: 3

‘Up & Kim-ing Pink’ a muted cotton candy/bubblegum pink crème hue, appears to be paradoxically both warm & cool toned. This easy flowing formula had an excellent viscosity to it, although the first coat had some patchiness issues that were resolved by the second layer. Wonderfully self-levelling and super-glossy at the finish. Coats applied: 3

‘Kim Konfidential’ is my new love. A fleshy honey beige hue, there appears to be some slight peachy/yellowish undertones in the base colour that helps this shade stay on the warm side and thus flattering on basically on all skin tones. With an almost jelly-like consistency to the formula, and as with the previous two shades, there was some slight streakiness upon application of the first coat, but the second layer filled everything in and added a luscious cushiony look. Self-levelling, insanely glossy and with a seamless looking texture, this might very well be my new favourite nude! Coats applied: 3

‘Nothing Kim-pares to Blue’ is a slightly sheer-leaning and cool-toned cornflower blue shade, filled with ultra-fine pearlized blue & silvery shimmer. Another surprise was the formula; slight jelly-like consistency to go with its inherent translucency – from looking at the bottle, I didn’t expect it to apply as sheerly as it did, although it still bore a nice self-levelling finish and glossy shine at the end. So pretty! Coats applied: 3

‘Lights, Kim-era, Action!’ one of two “effects” lacquers (as I like to call them) in this collection, is almost fairy-like; a slightly thicker formula and not as free-flowing as the previous shades, this milky based hue is absolutely filled with opalescent ultra-fine shimmer that appears to have a slight greenish duo chrome flash in certain lights, and still applied very well despite its density. Alone, it bears a gentle & ethereal look; applied over the other shades in this collection, it transforms them into something almost magical, although it should be noted that you shouldn’t skip top coat here, as the finish is definitely less glossy than the rest. ‘Here Kim’s the Sun’ , the second “effects” lacquer of this collection, is a clear base hue filled with prismatic (holographic?) square shaped micro-fine glitter, all in a slightly thick suspension-like base. One coat yields just the merest twinkling effect which is nice for a more subtle look. The glitter leaves this lacquer somewhat rough to the touch when dry, although a thicker top coat will quickly eliminate that issue. Coats applied: 3

Final thoughts: I’ve always considered myself to be attracted to more deeper-toned and moodier-hued shades, but right now I’m totally loving these types of lighter hues, such as this latest Nicole by OPI ‘Wel-Kim to my World’ collection – although when the weather begins to cool, I’ll most likely gravitate back towards darker colours again. Experimenting with ‘Lights, Kim-era, Action!’ yielded the most interesting results from the 2 effects lacquers here, adding a whole new dimension to each shade and giving them a sugar-coated look. If I were to choose my favourites from the 6, I would have to go with ‘Kim Konfidential’ for being such a perfect nude shade, ‘Others Pale by Kim-parison’ for the most flattering shade of white, and ‘Lights, Kim-era, Action!’ for its gorgeous glowy effect. My only issues with these varnishes is the same as with all Nicole by OPI: the price (CDN $10.99 each) – I don’t get why they’re more expensive than regular OPI, and the bottle shape (someone likened it to a saggy boob; I have to concur). Still, a nice little grouping, and one definitely worth checking out!
