YSL · Tatouage Couture Velvet Cream

YSL recently launched Tatouage Couture Velvet Cream liquid lipsticks and ridiculously long name aside, I’m actually surprised by how much I’m liking the formula. Of course, the gorgeous packaging had something to do with it, but in the end it was the “velvet” part that hooked me.

Tatouage Couture Velvet Cream (CAN $49.00/each) | Available in 14 shades, these are liquid lipsticks that are stated as imparting a “velvet matte stain”. Housed in a frosted acrylic rectangular case, the black cap bears the iconic Casandre logo done in gold, while the wide slanted flocked applicator is unique to the brand as well. The formula is interesting; gliding on buttery smooth, you get full coverage by the first swipe and the sensation is very comfortable throughout wear, as these don’t dry lips out the way traditional matte stains do. Speaking of stains, the lighter hues only provide a light tint when the majority of colour is gone, but the deeper shades definitely provide significantly more. By the way, how cool is Pink Accomplice with its shimmer? I’m not sure I’ve seen a velvet stain done that way before. For those with sensitivities, note that there is a soft rose fragrance discernible upon initial application, but it does dissipate quickly after that.

I love the editorial look of a matte lip, but can definitely do without the desiccating feel. I’m also not a fan of how matte liquid lippies tend to emphasize my [overly] lined lips — that’s why I find that these Tatouage Couture Velvet Cream shades are a happy medium. While they don’t exactly dry down, there’s a richness to the colour that gives them the appearance of mattes, but with none of the dry factor. That they fade to a stain also turns them into a two-for; add a slick of clear balm & you’ve just created something new!
