YSL · Rouge Volupté Rock’N’Shine

YSL has added to the Volupté family with the launch of Rock’N’Shine Lipsticks, and I can’t stop staring at them — guessing I’m not alone, either. At this point, I’m not sure whether I want to wear, or display them …

Rouge Volupté Rock’N’Shine Lipstick (CAN $49.00/each) | Housed in hefty silver metal cases with caps featuring a scattering of sparkling glitter (totally evokes a celestial sky, no?), each also sports a band depicting the shade found within along with the iconic “Cassandre” logo. The attention to detail continues with the actual bullet, which displays a shimmering ‘star’ core surrounded by colour. More along the lines of lipstick-meets-balm, I was honestly not expecting the high level of colour saturation they impart. The star’s glitter is of renewable plant-based origin, and is said to melt onto lips, while the fresh mango scent is soft & pleasing, but which also dissipates quickly. Application is effortless, with the creamy buttery texture literally gliding along the lips. Staying power is colour-dependant, with the lighter shades fading faster while the deeper hues leave a light stain behind. Note that the star’s surface will get “muddied” once you start using the lipstick, but since it runs through the core, its glimmering effect will continue with each swipe.

Even though I don’t mind taking the time to carefully apply a traditional lipstick (when the occasion warrants), my preference is definitely for either a balm or a gloss — mainly because it’s a lot easier and I can be lazy that way. Apart from the visual aesthetics, what I really like about these Rock’N’Shine lippies, is how goof-proof they are to apply (and that includes the deeper tones) as well as how comfortable their wear is, leaving my lips feeling nourished long after all traces have gone. By the way, how cute is the hot pink vinyl makeup bag they came in?

Available in 10-12 shades (retailer dependant)

In a word, exquisite — from the outer packaging (YSL knows how to do that beautifully), the appearance, and down to the actual effect. Sometimes a gimmick is just that: gimmicky, although that’s certainly NOT the case here. That star core is definitely pretty, but also actually provides a little something-something. Still, it’s the performance of each that has won me over. So if you’re more of a swipe-and-go girl like me, I’d say that the Rock’N’Shine Lipsticks are totally worth a look-see.
