Buxom · Plumpline Lip Liner & Shimmer Shock Lip Stick
Buxom has been around for some time now, although it’s a brand I’ve yet to explore — until now, that is, so naturally when these lippies came in I was excited to give them a shot. Forgetting for a moment the torture I put my lips through when working on a lot of swatches, I can’t resist a chubby stick…they’re just so cute, dammit.
Givenchy · Rouge Révélateur, Rouge Interdit & Lip Liners
Givenchy is one of those luxury beauty brands that somehow manages to fly under most peoples’ radar, but beauty lovers take note: I dare you to try any of their products, and not be impressed. Just launched for Spring 2017, the marbled Rouge Révélateur lipstick is one such product and pretty much guaranteed to blow you away.
Benefit · they’re Real! Big Sexy Lip Kit & they’re Real! Big Sexy Eye Kit
Benefit, the brand that’s not only known for wanting to perfect your brows but will forever be linked with the most fun retro-kitschy packaging on the planet, also produces some pretty amazing beauty products. A while back, I was sent these two cases with each bearing a prelaunch version of 2 new & upcoming products for 2017: four they’re Real! Double the Lip shades and a trio of they’re Real! Duo Shadow Blender hues.
So what exactly are these things, you may be asking? Well in a nutshell, the lippies — which come housed in packaging that’s a slimmer version of the brand’s best-selling they’re Real! Mascara — are a combo lipstick & liner in one. The unique teardrop shape has the liner portion at the tip and is quite effective at “grabbing & defining” the lip line, filling in lips with colour and a complimentary liner at the same time. The eyeshadow duos come with a unique ball-shaped sponge applicator that is meant to be swiped along two shades at the same time and then deposited along the lids, effectively creating a “bigger, wide-eyed” look with the complimentary colours. Sounds simple enough, no?
EDIT: as I sat down to write this post, I actually received the most generous package from Benefit that came complete with all 8 shades of both the lip and eyeshadows! How’s that for timing?!
they’re Real! Big Sexy Lip Kit (CAN $38.00/A $52.00 value) | The unique teardrop shape of the bullet has in effect combined both a lip shade and a complimentary lip liner hue in one product, to help provide the appearance of an instantly fuller pout. The formula is said to give 8 hours of wear, but I’m guessing that claim will probably hold truer for the deeper tones, with the lighter shades most likely falling short of that. The texture is quite creamy and glides easily along the lips and while there’s a slight learning curve in manipulating the tip to effectively outline the lips, it’s actually pretty easy to use once you’ve got it down pat. The only issue is in keeping the tip sharp (if anyone knows how I can do this, let me know in the comments) but even that isn’t a deal-breaker for me, since I don’t mind having the two shades combined anyway.
- Flame Game – tangerine with a deeper orange tip
- Pink Thrills – hot pink with a deep rose tip
- Revved-Up Red – pink red with a deep rose/red tip
- Lusty Rose – dusky rose with dark pink tip
they’re Real! Big Sexy Eye Kit (CAN $47.00/A $94.00 value) | The three trios in this set can also be used as 6 individual shades, although the deal is to actually apply each duo simultaneously with the help of the unique spherical sponge applicator. Said to provide “12 hours of crease-resistant” wear, I still need to apply primer first as my lids lean on the oily side (ugh) – something to consider if you’re like me. As with the lippies, there’s a slight learning curve here too but once you get the hang of it, it’s actually not only easy, but fun.
All you have to do is hold the applicator firmly and in one even stroke — keeping even pressure the entire time — swipe it across your chosen duo. You should clearly see both shadow colours upon the applicator, which you then apply to your lid using the same even-stroke method … just ensure you do this by also following your eye shape’s unique contours. What you should wind up with is the two shades deposited at once, with one running along the lid and the other at crease-level. Of course, this isn’t set in stone; feel free to use whatever brushes you prefer and whichever shade you like to mix & match at will. Personally, I feel that who can really benefit (lol) from this system will be anyone who’s not that adept at applying multiple eyeshadows (this take the guesswork out of the equation) or anyone in a rush and just wants to slap something on quickly. Boom. Done.
- Beyond Nude – soft tan with champagne shimmer
- Naughty Neutral – mauve taupe with pink pearl shimmer
- Bombshell Brown – pale brown with oyster shimmer
What saves either of these products from being gimmicky, is the fact that the quality is spot-on, the shades are all lovely & wearable, and they more or less function as per the claims. As to convenience, I like the idea of the two lip shades in one but the texture is quite soft which means the tip will round out rather quickly. Again, I don’t mind because instead of a sharply lined look, you then get more of an ombré effect — something I like even better, in fact. As to the eyeshadow duos, I find the textures to be quite good and the colours very complimentary, but I’ll definitely stick to using my own brushes for application; keeps my inner control-freak happier that way.
Available at Sephora/individual shades will be available February, 2017

On current rotation: Dior Addict Lip Glow lip care
Lately it feels like I’ve done more than my share of lip swatches and as a result, I’ve needed to give my lips some major TLC. That’s where this trio of Dior Addict Lip Glow Care lovelies have come to the rescue to not only give me back some much-needed hydration (plus very gentle exfoliation), but to help get my pout back to optimum shape. A good thing too, as I have about ten bajillion more lip products to swatch …

001 Universal Pink Lip Glow Pomade Colour Reviver Instant Oil-Gel Care (CAN $41.00) | The cue here is in the name: from the French ‘pommade’ which means ‘ointment’, this is an intensive moisture treatment for the lips. Its unique new oil-gel texture is dispensed via a velvety flocked applicator which contains high levels of shea butter for long-lasting & deep nourishment. The universal pink shade (which also matches both the Lip Glow Liner and any of the Lip Glow Colour Awakening Balms) can be worn alone or under any lipstick for some extra pucker protection, although I prefer wearing it an night to let it thoroughly drench my lips with restorative moisture while I sleep. Gotta love a beauty product that does its work for you.

Lip Glow Liner Contour Colour Reviver & Filler, limited edition (CAN $36.00) | This is a barely there nude-rose lip liner that can be worn alone or with any other lip product, which can also provide a custom ‘filler’ effect. The angled bevelled tip makes it easy to work with whether used along its broader side to cover larger areas of the lip, or with the pointier tip in the event any precision work is needed, although why anyone would need precision from a relatively transparent product is beyond me (but I still felt like throwing that out there). I prefer using this as more of a ‘dam’ to help prevent darker lip shades from feathering out or bleeding into surrounding lip lines – works like a charm!
*To the best of my knowledge, this product is only showing availability at Sephora
EDIT: this is limited edition and exclusive to Sephora, so better get it while you can!

005 Lilac Lip Glow Colour Awakening Lipbalm (CAN $41.00) | Ever since trying my first Colour Awakening Balm a few years ago, I have been hooked and totally get why people stock up & hoard these limited edition lip saviours. A must-have at all Dior backstage shows, these act to not only prep the lips with soothing moisture, but will also enhance and bring out your natural lip colour by reacting to your unique chemistry via Dior’s Color Reviving technology. Wild Mango and Luffa Cylindrica in the formula add an extra protective and moisture boost as well. I personally absolutely love the faint lilac hue this shade gives my lips, and usually prefer wearing this solo for a hint of colour to go with all the other yummy good stuff it includes.

Being in this industry, I’m fortunate to have access to all the latest products that get released and while you can always find me testing a bagful of lip care products at any given time, I always come back to time-tested favourites such as the Colour Awakening Balm. The Pomade has been a steady and regular staple in my lip care routine since it arrived and while I may not need the Lip Glow Liner all that often, I like knowing that I have that option in the event of. Like with all those intense Fall & holiday hues that are everywhere right now …
Do let me know if you’ve tried any (or all) of these, as well as what your faves are!

CHANEL | Le Rouge Collection N°1 Fall 2016 – cont’d
Recently arrived, I have a few more pieces from CHANEL’s Le Rouge Collection N°1 for Fall 2016 to show you — and the reason why they weren’t included in my earlier posts. Lucia Pica’s first collection for this beauty giant, is based on red – a favourite hue of Coco Chanel herself, and a colour that invokes the strongest and most intense reactions from any other in the spectrum. Plus it’s sexy as all get-out, and you can’t go wrong with that.

128 Rouge Brûlé Illusion d’Ombre, limited edition (CAN $41.00) | A cream-to-powder eye shadow in a high-shine metallic copper/rose gold colour. I’m going to put this out there: I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SHADE TO COME INTO MY LIFE. Bearing absolutely faultless pigmentation, this can be worn alone for megawatt impact or layered under similarly hued powdered eyeshadows to provide staying power and more depth of tone. You do have about a minute to play/blend before it sets because after that it will not budge (that’s over prime lids).

58 Rouge Vie, Rouge Allure Velvet (CAN $43.00) | This is the brand’s version of matte, done the CHANEL sophisticated way. A positively perfect red hue with both cool and warm tones in the base, making it wearable by a broad range of complexions. The finish is as described: velvety — but it’s also plush and quite opaque, offering amazing coverage from the first swipe. Staying power is excellent as well, with some obvious fading seen after eating/drinking.
97 Désir Precision Lip Definer (CAN $33.00) | A searing orange-red lip liner hue in a creamy formula that has enough give to provide an effortless application (no tugging or pulling, thank you very much) but still manages to stay stiff enough that you can use it for more precision lining as well. It comes with a separate sharpener, and while I love using retractible pencils, you can only get the sharpest point by sharpening it the old fashioned way.
TIP: Using a lip liner that’s a few degrees lighter in colour than your lipstick may provide a slight illusion of fullness to lips (which is exactly what I’ve done in the swatch photo below).

CHANEL | 97 Désir Precision Lip Definer & 929 Agapé Stylo Yeux Waterproof
929 Agapé Stylo Jeux Waterproof, limited edition (CAN $35.00) | For the most part, CHANEL’s Stylo Yeux eye liners are my absolute favourites and for a number of reasons: excellent colour payoff, smooth & gliding feel to application, non-irritating and quite long-lasting. This shade is a complex rich hazelnut brown with burgundy glints in its base, and will look amazing on everyone, not to mention being a great alternative to wearing black.
CHANEL Fall 2016 | 929 Agapé Stylo Yeux Waterproof
I have to bow to CHANEL’s genius with the release of this collection: every single piece I have tried (which is basically the entire collection; I’ll be picking up the last two items I don’t currently own) has been nothing short of STELLAR. Building an entire collection around the colour red, was a bold & inspired move from the brand’s new makeup head and her gamble paid off because it totally rocks. For the record, I have been totally vibing on red, berry, & rust hues for some weeks now and the results slay me every.single.time.
