a-england: A very special 2-Year Anniversary promo!
In the 2 years since the cult boutique brand a-england was launched, these products have quickly risen to become huge favourites amongst bloggers and consumers alike – and with good reason. Apart from the exceptional quality of the formula and the incredibly unique colours available, there are 2 other facets that set this nail lacquer brand apart, namely the evocative stories behind each & every collection, and its creator – Adina Bodana, a woman who has shown that no matter what, her consumers come first – and with that one simple gesture, she has completely affected our purchasing ways. It has also been my personal honour to have worked closely with this remarkable lady, and I couldn’t be prouder knowing that my descriptions of her beauties are immortalized on her website!

New Year 2013 mani in luxe Black & Gold
The days following Christmas and right before New Year’s Eve found me in a bit of a dilemma; what to wear on my nails to usher in 2013. First World Problems, I know.
I wanted something unique, but not outrageous. Age appropriate, but not ageing. Sophisticated, sexy, unique & fun – all at the same time. My last criteria, was that it had to be easy to execute, as I had a family lunch planned for New Year’s day to still prepare for, and my time was rather limited. Oh yeah … I wanted to post something I hadn’t shown yet on the blog. When I factored in that I would be wearing black & gold, the solution hit me immediately:

OPI’s ‘Black Spotted’ layered over ‘Goldeneye’ from the Skyfall Collection (previously reviewed here) with Cirque Colors ‘Au’ (previously reviewed here) layered over a-england’s ‘Camelot’ (previously reviewed here) on the accent fingers. Black & Gold, but done in non-traditional manner with an edgy twist for interest and exactly the statement I was searching for to represent the gilded promise of the New Year. Plus, it looked really cool.
*Please note that OPI’s ‘Black Spotted’ was a limited edition France exclusive released last summer – I’m so grateful to my Fairy Lélie of The Purple Fairy Book for snagging this original beauty for me! ♥
All swatches are with a-england’s The Knight Base Coat and The Shield Top Coat.
For all fingers except the ring finger: I applied 3 thin coats of ‘Goldeneye’ followed by an really thin layer of ‘Black Spotted’. It should be noted that you need to play with ‘Black Spotted’ in order to get the proportions right; too thick a coat and the effect is almost non-existent, too scant and the look becomes runny & diluted. I found the best way was to wipe the brush against the neck of the bottle until it seemed just this side of dry – you could always apply a touch more if needed.

Final thoughts: I really wish my photos could show you what I saw; how ‘Goldeneye’s’ luxe hue totally gleamed under the undulating waves of ‘Black Spotted’, and looked almost multi-dimensional. The infinite blackness of ‘Camelot’ – and if you don’t own this already, you absolutely should as it’s the most incredible black shade available: creamy, glossy, a possible 1-coater & completely non-staining – enhancing each & every single 23k gold flake of ‘Au’ … absolutely stunning, but in a totally understated way. Yes, everything about my New Year mani is what I’m hoping 2013 will be: brilliant but with a touch of mystery, unique different from what came before, and filled with the promise of prosperity!

New! a-england ‘Heavenly Quotes’ – And the Moonbeams… & She Walks in Beauty
If you have already experienced the a-england brand of lacquers, then you understand how it has reached the level of cult status so quickly … for those yet to indulge, allow me to explain this phenomenon: basically, it is because each and every single bottle of varnish comes from the heart and with a story – first created in the intuitive mind of its founder, Adina Bodana, then lovingly brought to life for the rest of us to enjoy. Attention to detail is crucial to a-england’s success, with a synergy that ties all the components together: concept, imagery, shades, and formula. Truly, works of art in liquid form.
Joining ‘Beauty Never Fails’ (previously reviewed here) from the Heavenly Quotes series, I present you with the latest additions, ‘And the Moonbeams…’ – a shimmering golden hue, along with ‘She Walks in Beauty’ – an intricate gold & pink glitter confection, both shades inspired by 2 well-known works of poetry. Easily worn on their own, or layered over a base shade for a unique & new colour combination, you are only limited by your own imagination — and your nail polish collection, in how you wear these two beauties.
All swatches are with a-england’s ‘The Knight’ Base Coat and ‘The Shield’ Top Coat
Love’s Philosophy
The fountains mingle with the river
And the rivers with the ocean,
The winds of heaven mix for ever
With a sweet emotion;
Nothing in the world is single;
All things by a law divine
In one spirit meet and mingle.
Why not I with thine?—
See the mountains kiss high heaven
And the waves clasp one another;
No sister-flower would be forgiven
If it disdained its brother;
And the sunlight clasps the earth
And the moonbeams kiss the sea:
What is all this sweet work worth
If thou kiss not me?
– Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822)
And the Moonbeams… – Have you ever seen dust motes swirling and suspended in a ray of sunlight? That’s the image this shade reminded me of! A pale gold ultra finely ground shimmer base filled with tiny irregular golden glass flecks, and interspersed with slightly larger gold glitter pieces – all in a formula that defines perfection: excellent density, flow, and dispersal of the shimmer. The reflective lemony hue also seems to have an oxidized side, which gives it a greenish glow in some lights. One coat provides good coverage, although a second layer gives a gorgeous translucent effect, leaving behind a brilliant shine and feeling smooth to the touch. Rather quick-drying as well, I was surprised by how painless removal was – although the finer glitter may migrate to the surrounding skin. Coats applied: 3 thin

I knew without a doubt that I wanted to layer ‘And the Moonbeams…’ over ‘Elaine’ (previously reviewed here), a deep byzantium purple crème shade from a-england’s first collection ‘The Mythicals’. Something about purple and gold together just says “royalty” to me, but what I didn’t expect was how I couldn’t take my eyes off this combination – I am totally loving this opulent “baroque” look.

She Walks in Beauty
She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow’d to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!
– George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788-1824)
She Walks in Beauty – a highly complex shade, made up of a similar golden base to that of ‘And the Moonbeams’, but with the addition of both small and large rose-coloured hexagonal glitter pieces. The formula here is a mystery to me; seemingly thick upon initial application, it somehow manages to not only stay exactly where it’s placed, but with hardly any effort at all. There was absolutely no issue with glitter dispersal either (no fishing for the larger pieces, or placing them manually) with the final look appearing in turn golden, olive-gold, silver, or pewter depending on the angle and light. Rather quick drying and with a brilliant natural finish, the surface can be a little gritty – nothing that a thicker layer of top coat (or 2) couldn’t solve. Removal, as with all glitter lacquers, requires some elbow grease; that being said, I will soon be posting a fabulous new method that can help with glitter removal. Coats applied: 3 (as thin as possible)

She Walks in Beauty
The logical thing to do would have been to layer ‘She Walks in Beauty’ over ‘Camelot’ (previously reviewed here), a-england’s rich ebony hue, but I something steered me towards ‘Bridal Veil’ (from ‘The Legend’ Collection – previously reviewed here) instead; I felt that the subtle prismatic particles of this base shade would be the perfect compliment, along with providing a unique depth of tone to the finished look. I absolutely love how it turned out!

Final thoughts: After taking a few minutes to reacquaint myself with the poems that inspired these two lacquers, I couldn’t help but feel that once again, Adina managed to capture the essence of the words with these shades. The cool lemony-gold of ‘And the Moonbeams…’ feels right, as though that’s exactly what a moonbeam would look like in liquid form. The shimmering glitter of ‘She Walks in Beauty’ made me think of roses and femininity, yet there was strength there as well. I love how versatile these 2 shades are, giving you the choice of either wearing them solo or layered — it’s like doubling up your collection. And now, I’m already looking forward to the next chapter of this continuing story … but not before I try a few more combinations with these beauties!

All Hallows’ Eve 2012 …
I’m not one for complicated nail art, but every now & then I like to try my hand at something outside of the box — at least as far as my tastes run. In honour of the pagan holiday “All Hallows’ Eve” which we all know & celebrate today as “hallowe’en”, I once again turned to a shade from one of my most beloved brands, a-england’s ‘Lancelot’ (previously reviewed here) – a shade that straddles the line between deepest onyx and blood red, accompanied by ‘Goldeneye’ from OPI’s ‘Skyfall Holiday Collection’ (previously reviewed here) – the most brilliantly luxurious gold. All swatches are with base & top coats.
The look:
- once the base coat was dry, I applied 3 thin layers of ‘Goldeneye’ over the entire nail, waiting approximately 2 minutes between coats to avoid any dragging
- making sure to leave enough of a border around the nail to show the base colour, I then carefully applied 1 coat of ‘Lancelot’ down the center of the nail
- a final layer of top coat sealed everything in and served to amplify its already intense shine
I am so happy with the way this turned out, with the deeply burnished gold of ‘Goldeneye’ under ‘Lancelot’ almost making it seem to pulsate like a beating heart – an unexpected thrill, and one that made the entire look that much more seasonally appropriate – in every sense of the word!

Final thoughts: I’ve stated often enough that I’m a “colour purist” and tend to lean towards dark hues, although I confess to being so attracted to shiny things as well – a contradiction, but one I can’t deny. My inspiration for this look was drawn from antique Venetian masks: luxurious, mysterious, and darkly seductive, and to that end I wanted to try and recreate that feel with nail lacquer – I absolutely love how it turned out! Now if I only had a masquerade ball to attend …
Happy All Hallows’ Eve!

a-england – The ‘Gothic Beauties’ Collection (swatches & review)
In the short time since a-england, a boutique nail lacquer brand was launched, it has achieved cult status – for all the right reasons. The formulas are absolutely superb, the colours diverse and almost surrealistically beautiful, the concepts behind each collection are cohesive and unique, but the icing on the cake is the founder & creative mind behind the brand: Adina Bodana, a woman with vision and heart, who makes one feel as though each bottle of varnish is sent with love. And it is, trust me on that. With ‘The Mythicals’ (all previously reviewed here, here, here, here & here) and ‘The Legend’ (previously reviewed here) collections having been met with such rave reviews, what could possibly top that? The ‘Gothic Beauties’ Collection … that’s what.
the menacingly sly beauty of a gothically-inspired landscape
Presenting a-england’s latest release, the ‘Gothic Beauties’ collection – a group of 5 subtly shimmering colours, with the brand’s ultra black shade ‘Camelot’ forming the backbone behind each hue. Each richly glowing shade is based on a character from well-known gothic literature and the theme that ties them all together is one that is at once tragic and romantically dreamy, but the underlying currents of intense passion present in each, is what truly binds them and makes them come alive. These 5 glorious lacquers simmer with hidden desires, needing only the right set of circumstances to bring them out … or in this case, the right lighting. All swatches are with a-england’s ‘The Knight’ Base Coat and ‘The Shield’ Top Coat.

Dorian Gray – in natural light
Based on the title of character of Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, a man who falls prey to a completely hedonistic way of life, transferring all of his inner ugliness to his portrait, all the while presenting the world with a facade of surpassing beauty. He is ultimately saved by his realization that only his death can somehow atone for all of his sins.
‘Dorian Gray’ is a complex gunmetal/pewter hue, infused with ultra-fine deep gold shimmer that also bears some particles of green and pink scattered throughout, lending this shade a sinister beauty. The formula, while the thickest of the 5, applied in a buttery and completely self-levelling way, and the saturation of colour is such that you barely need more than 1 coat for complete opacity. With a unique blueish tinge when seen in subdued light, the final look gleams intently, although top coat really enhances all of its nuances. Coats applied: 2

Ophelia – in natural light
Based on the doomed character in Shakespeare’s play, “Hamlet”, young Ophelia is destined to be the future king of Denmark’s wife, but is sent conflicting messages by Hamlet himself, whom she comes to be besotted with. Upon the death of her father, she spirals deeper into madness, finally killing herself by drowning, after having taken the herb rue – a well known symbol of regret.

‘Ophelia’ is filled with the same inner struggles and complexities as its namesake character; an incredibly easy-flowing formula, the blackened base serves as the perfect backdrop for the multitude of crushed amethyst ultra fine shimmer at its core. Application of a thicker layer can definitely make this a 1-coater if so desired, although the purple gleam really develops beautifully by the second coat. Completely self-levelling and finishing with an excellent gloss, there was no staining left behind upon removal. Coats applied: 2

Tess d’Urbervilles – in natural light
Based on the character Tess Durbeyfield in Thomas Hardy’s much acclaimed novel “Tess d’Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented” (1891), a story about a woman of the rurals, whose life is torn apart by the conventions of Victorian society when she inadvertently becomes the carnal focus of Alec d’Urberville – a man of self-imposed nobility and despicable morals. Even though Tess herself is of pure heart, her beauty makes her a target and she is doomed to live in a time where womanly ideals are rigidly adhered to, thus making it impossible for her to ever find inner peace. Though she becomes imprisoned and ultimately executed for murdering Alec, she meets her sad fate finally rid of that man’s insiduous hold over her … finding peace at least in death.

‘Tess d’Urbervilles’ is a mesmerizing blackened hue filled with ultra-fine irregularly shaped & shimmering emerald flecks deep within, truly evocative of the lush & verdant landscape that Thomas Hardy’s novel is based in. While the formula here follows that of the rest and applies slightly thickly, it is of such creamy consistency that it makes the flow superb. Not as glossy as ‘Ophelia’, this gem becomes blindingly brilliant by the addition of top coat. No staining upon removal – always a bonus. Coats applied: 2

The Lady of Shalott – John William Waterhouse 1888 (source)
Lady of Shalott – in natural light
Based on the poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809 – 1892), this is loosely based on the Arthurian tales and in particular, that of Elaine who so deeply loved Sir Lancelot. The 19 stanzas (originally 20), tell the story of a woman, the Lady of Shalott, who is doomed to stay locked up in her tower and may never look fully upon Camelot, lest a mysterious curse takes her. Forced then to view the world only through her mirror, she thus displays what she sees through her weavings, but one day when Lancelot chances to ride by, she cannot help but be overcome by his beauty and presence, and upon looking at him, she brings about the curse. Knowing that there is no hope and wanting to avoid inflicting any evil on anyone else, she comes out of her tower and takes a boat downriver towards Camelot, but tragically dies along the way – only to be found by Lancelot who is awed by her serene and graceful beauty as seen in death.
‘Lady of Shalott’ bears the same blackened based as the others of the series, with the ultra-fine blue and scant pink inner particles lending this shade an inky overall tone. Viewed in sunlight, its inner sapphire flashes are a striking presence – referencing the blue tinge of the mirror that the Lady of Shalott is forced to see by, as well as the cloudless day when she first espies Lancelot. With a perfectly self-levelling and silky flowing formula, the final result is one that literally yields celestial beauty. Coats applied: 2

Jane Eyre (source)
Jane Eyre – in natural light
Based on Charlotte Brontë’s novel “Jane Eyre” and its central character of the same name, this is a tale of submerged passions, cruelty, deceit and finally, love. Jane, orphaned at a young age, comes to live with her abusive relatives but is finally rid of them years later upon entering a charitable boarding school. Upon graduation, she finds employment as a governess to a ward of Edward Rochester, the “byronic” master of the manor Thornfield Hall, and gradually they come to feel a deep love for one another. While Jane accepts Mr. Rochester’s marriage proposal, circumstances continually conspire against them, and when she learns he is still married to his former wife, she runs away rather than live in sin with him in the south of France, as he proposed they do. Eventually, she learns that his estranged and mad wife set fire to the manor, committing suicide by jumping to her death and leaving Mr. Rochester maimed and blinded by this disaster. Jane returns to him, finally able to indulge in their love for one another despite everything, and she finds freedom in her passions at last.
‘Jane Eyre’ is a brooding, deeply mysterious shade, filled with ribbons of ultra-fine scarlet shimmer that resemble the burning embers of a banked fire. Perfectly suited to the character for which it is named, as the colour red figures prominently throughout the story, this bears the same incredible formula as the rest, with application laying down utterly smooth, and while not truly glossy, there is nonetheless a wonderful gleam at the finish with zero staining upon removal. A little something extra: while working on this review, I drew inspiration by listening to the haunting tones of Loreena McKennitt, a brilliant Canadian artist (and one of my all-time favourites, I might add), in particular her rendition of “The Lady of Shalott” which she set to an original score. Enjoy …
Final thoughts: If you have yet to try an a-england lacquer, you are missing out on a truly unique experience – once that combines beauty, form, function and history. Finding inspiration in her love of art and literature, Adina has managed to once again provide us with shades that make an impression; no wildly eccentric colours or exotic finishes here, but five deeply saturated varnishes that provide a subtle beauty, elegance, sophistication, and a dangerous modern edge – further proof that the adage “less is more” was never more accurate. I don’t have a favourite amongst these jewels, as each one displays something different and covers all moods, which therefore means that I absolutely LOVE them equally; I will say that you need to look at these with a connoisseur’s eye in order to completely appreciate all of their intricate complexities, but in the end, the stellar formula of each shade speaks for itself.
EDIT: For those that can’t get enough of this amazing brand (which is probably everyone), please note that Adina also has another couple of shades – separate from this collection – in the planning stages that she is presently working on. I will be providing updates as they get closer to launch.
The ‘Gothic Beauties’ Collection is slated for an early September release, but feel free to follow a-england on facebook/twitter for all the latest updates, and do check out the brand’s website for information on the entire product range.
