UNTOLD (Eau de Parfum Spray 50 ml/1.7 fl. oz CAN $75.00) – Coming in a white box with a gold embossed cross-hatch design (it’s just so pretty!) the bottle is like a little piece of art. Created by IFF perfumer Clement Gavarry, he wanted UNTOLD to be “a harmonious balance of the many facets of a woman” and I’d have to say that this warm floral manages to accomplish exactly that. The unique and faceted bottle shape with its slight curve, is an excellent representation of the many sides of every woman; present, radiant & elusive at the same time, to name a few facets. According to the company:

Each note in the fragrance was selected to evoke a characteristic of the UNTOLD woman:

  • Vibrant: Sparkling Pink Pepper fused with crisp Bergamot expose her vibrant optimism and joyful spirit
  • Unpredictable: Playful, fruity accents of Pear and Blackcurrant Bud LMR* evoke her unpredictable ways
  • Refined: Delicate Gardenia petals and intoxicating Egyptian Jasmine LMR* reveal her romantic and sophisticated femininity
  • Mysterious: Nuances of Patchouli Heart LMR* and Sandalwood hint at her mysterious aura
  • Sensual: Heated Ambers cascade over the caress of hypnotic Musk unveiling her magnetic sensuality. Lingering in the air is the unforgettable essence of her presence

*LMR= Laboratoire Monique Rémy. International Flavors & Fragrances Inc.’s in-house, natural facility situated in Grasse, France, that specializes in extracting natural raw materials through a craftsmanship technique. Therefore, productions are rare, fine and represent the best quality in the marketplace.

My thoughts: Fragrances and I have a very complicated relationship, as some ingredients can give me an instantaneous & blinding headache upon initial spritzing – in particular, florals. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this is so not the case with Elizabeth Arden’s ‘UNTOLD’, which is actually considered a floral. There’s a tangy vibrancy I picked up upon initial application, which quickly mellowed out as the fragrance began to dry upon the skin, evolving into something almost honey-like, but with teasing floral hints somewhere way in the background. The slight powdery tone that came through after several hours of wearing seemed perfectly blended with a more resin-like note, giving this fragrance a nice balance between coming off as both sensuous and fresh.

Elizabeth Arden – UNTOLD

Since 1922, Elizabeth Arden has been crafting fragrances that have been achieving cult status amongst their followers (Red Door, Green Tea), and ‘UNTOLD’ seems poised to join their ranks as well. I was quite surprised by how much I liked the way this scent worked with my body chemistry – no adverse reaction at all. The bottle has got to be one of the most beautiful I’ve seen in quite some time, and no detail has been overlooked; you will so WANT to display this.

PS: Another great gift idea for the holidays! Also available in:

Ralph Lauren + Essie Collaboration

RL & Essie Collaboration opener

The new and limited edition collections of Ralph Lauren’s Big Pony Fragrances, designed by Essie Weingarten, founder and Global Director of cult nail lacquer brand essie, feature 4 scents that capture the many facets of a woman –  from ‘Sporty’ (Blue #1), ‘Sensual’ (Pink #2), ‘Free-Spirited’ (Yellow #3), and ‘Stylish’ (Purple #4), along with a matching essie nail varnish shade, all in a signature drawstring pouch.

I was so thrilled to be told that I would be representing Yellow #3 – the ‘Free-Spirited Woman’! According to the press release:

“#3 dares to bottle the essence of a rebellious, free-spirited woman. Capturing this confidence in a manicure means wearing a bright yellow polish, accented with a bold and sunny floral print”

“Eccentric, rebellious and independent, this Floral Green fragrance highlights Pear & Mimosa. The crisp, bright scent represents ultimate optimism and natural feminine radiance for a woman who dances to the beat of her own drum”.

Yes … that definitely describes me. To a fault, I’d say. Rules are so meant to be broken.

There are 2 versions of each set, both coming in a matching coloured pouch:

  • 50 ml fragrance & essie nail polish (CAD $67.00) – available at The Bay and Sears
  • 30 ml fragrance, 50g Body Mist & essie nail polish (CAD $47.00) – available exclusively at Jean Coutu in Québec

Please note that these polishes are NOT sold individually.

This past March, I had the extreme pleasure of meeting, chatting with, and even getting my own nails done by Rita Remark, essie Canada’s lead nail artist (you can read about my experience here), and this is a lady who is not only super talented, but one of the nicest people you’ll ever hope to meet. Oh yeah, she’s also a major bombshell … The nail looks she created to match each fragrance, perfectly capture the spirit they represent and while I don’t have Rita’s mad skills, I did try my own hand at a floral accent nail – I chose a “daisy” motif in honour of Mother’s Day, and in homage to my own mom who’s name happens to also be ‘Rita’ – short for ‘Marguerita’, which means “daisy” in Greek.

Don’t you just love it when everything works out like that?

essie #3 Yellow is also unique for another reason: it’s the first time this colour is shown by essie, having never done a yellow before. As this shade is notoriously difficult to pull off, both in terms of application and skin-tone matching, I couldn’t wait to swatch it and see how it fared. I really shouldn’t have worried, however. Read on …

Essie #3 Yellow

#3 Yellow – a warm-leaning egg yolk yellow hue in a crème finish. The perfect density formula flowed really easily, neither too thick nor too thin and while the first coat looked somewhat streaky, it was quickly resolved when I applied my second coat. Self levelling and with a super glossy natural finish, short nails won’t need more than 2 coats for full & opaque coverage. Coats applied: 3 (thin), plus top coat.

RL & Essie Collaboration Body Mist

Big Pony Yellow #3 Refreshing Body Mist (50 g/1.75 oz) – a lighter version of the Eau de Toilette, this Refreshing Body Mist is perfect for those hot summer days (or nights) where you want just a hint of scent, although even the one short spritz I applied, seemed to linger on my skin for hours. Refreshing and almost citrusy, there’s enough fragrance to distinguish it from a mere body product and elevate it to scented bodycare status.

RL #3 Fragrance

Big Pony Yellow #3 Eau de Toilette (30 ml) – I’m not a floral person, I’ve stated this before, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that I not only really liked this scent, but that it actually worked with my body chemistry. There’s an interesting mix of herbaceous, floral, citrus and chypre tones, and yet there’s an undefinable “je ne sais quoi” as the fragrance dries down, leaving a hint of mystery in its wake. I like it when someone can’t put their finger on what it is exactly that makes you smell so DAMN good. This scent makes me smell that way.

RL #3 Fragrance 2

Last word: If you’re wondering what to get your mom for Mother’s Day, take it from me – a mom AND a beauty fiend – that one of these sets would be absolutely perfect. Each nail lacquer has been exclusively created for its accompanying fragrance and will not be sold separately, and as these are limited edition, once they’re gone, you’re out of luck. This collection in particular really surprised me, both the scent and the nail polish shade — a colour I did not think would suit my skin tone, and yet for some bizarre reason it does. I am definitely not complaining.

L’Occitane en Provence – La Collection de Grasse

L'Occitane Grasse opener

Grasse, France – a region renown for producing some of the finest and most complex fragrances in the market today, is the inspiration behind L’Occitane en Provence’s latest launch, ‘La Collection de Grasse’, comprised of 4 distinct scent pairings – Jasmin & Bergamote, Magnolia & Mûre, Vanille & Narcisse, and Thé Vert & Bigarade.

A true homage to the perfume schools of Grasse, each pairing has been carefully selected by Karine Dubreuil, perfumer for L’Occitane who has trained with the Roure school of perfumery at Grasse and who is the “nose” behind many famous fragrances. Sourcing precious extracts from near and distant lands such as magnolia from the Far East, blackberry from the South of France, green tea from Japan, bitter orange from Tunisia, jasmine from Grasse and Egypt, bergamot from Italy, vanilla from Madagascar, and narcissus from France, the entire list behind each duo is like taking a worldwide journey.
buy Nootropil online buybloinfo.com/ no prescription

“Two by two, the ingredients have been brought together with supreme skill from Karine Dubreuil. Sometimes they seem destined for each other. At other times, it’s like a wonderful chance encounter. And then there are the ingredients that echo and enrich each other. Nothing is forbidden – boldness is embraced”

Designed by Olivier Baussan, founder of L’Occitane, the fragrance bottles were created in an almost-perfect square, in a simple style of thick and clear glass, inspired by the traditional perfume bottles of Grasse. The black caps and the face of the matt white card packaging, are decorated by the ampersand (&) symbol in relief (and in the colours of a key accord) – which represent not only the union of scents, but gives a nod to an age-old heritage: in Occitan, the “&” (ampersand) sign was read like other letters and considered the “27th” letter of the alphabet until the  19th century. The ampersand is a ligature of the letters in “et” – the Latin word for “and”.

For the Collection de Grasse, the ampersand becomes the unifying symbol declaring a marriage of contrasting or complimentary elements.

Of the four scent pairings, 3 of them have been specifically designed for women – Jasmin & Bergamote, Magnolia & Mûre, and Vanille & Narcisse, while Thé Vert & Bigarade can be worn by both men and women. Each composition is available in (all in Canadian prices):

  • Eau de Toilette, 75 ml – $75.00
  • Body Milk, 175 ml – $24.00
  • Shower Gel, 175 ml – $20.00
  • Perfumed Soap, 125 g – #10.00

L'Occitane Narcisse & Vanille bottle

Vanille & Narcisse Eau de Toilette (CAD $75.00/75 ml) “Brazen Happiness”

Evocative of – an exuberant and expressive burst of laughter, the mellow warmth of the East

The Spirit – Vanilla lightly enveloped in white flowers

The Fragrance – Discreet at first, the scent of narcissus swells to reveal a bouquet of white flowers ad spicy heart accords. Finally, the rich and radiant vanilla borrows the wilder, untamed notes of narcissus that give it its spirit

Key Raw Materials – Vanilla absolute from Madagascar and narcissus absolute from France

Family – vanilla oriental

  • Head notes: blackcurrant, bergamot
  • Heart notes: NARCISSUS, gardenia
  • Base notes: VANILLA, tonka bean

My experience: I usually avoid florals, as I have found that they do not agree with my body’s unique chemistry. Orientals, however, are something I absolutely love and with that in mind, I looked forward to seeing how this floral-oriental combination would work on me. Upon initial application, I sensed the barest whisper of the vanilla – a sly hint of what was to come later, overlapped by the early exuberance of white flowers. The blackcurrant & bergamot notes add a unique tangy touch, helping to offset what might otherwise become too floral for me, and when the scent finally settled into its final stages some 3 hours later, I was left with the warmer & mellower notes of the vanilla. Surprisingly, this turned out to actually be a floral I can wear, although my personal preference is that the muskier/vanilla tones were more dominant … but that’s just me. Still, this scent feels like the embodiment of modern femininity, without coming off as either too cloyingly girly or ambiguously asexual – very original, and fresh.

L'Occitane Jasmin & Bergamote

Jasmin & Bergamote Body Milk (CAD $24.00/175 ml) – “Day and Night”

Evocative of – A light, graceful, sensual dance

The Spirit – The olfactory variations of a delicate flower observed in the light of dawn

The Fragrance – Bergamot discreetly lights up the scent and continues to retain a lingering presence. Contrasts blend with ambivalence, while jamine reveals all its facets. To convey this ambiguity, at least two types of jasmine would be needed: a jasmine from Grasse and a jasmine from Egypt. The balance fluctuates between petals and leaves, freshness and sensuality, day and night.

Key Raw Materials – Jasmine absolutes from Grasse and Egypt, bergamot essential oil from Italy

Family – jasmine floral

  • Head notes: mandarin orange, BERGAMOT
  • Heart notes: JASMINE, lemon leaves
  • Base notes: sandalwood, cedar

My experience: With a formula that runs more on the thin than thick side, this body milk applied like a veil along my skin, was easily absorbed and left behind a well-hydrated feeling. The shape of the bottle fits comfortably in the hand, and I really like the convenience of the pop up dispenser – keeps any mess to a minimum and can be worked one handed. The scent is crisp & herbal/green, with a slight amber-like undertone and while it was a definite presence upon initial application, it then faded to a softer version of itself – but no less bright – some 3 hours later. As a bodycare product, it has a remarkable emollient quality and my skin felt quite nourished – the addition of fragrance helps it to serve double duty, providing an olfactory appeal as well.

L'Occitane Jasmin & Bergamote soap 2

Jasmin & Bergamote Perfumed Soap (CAD $10.00/125 g) – see above for a complete breakdown of the scent.

My experience: This oversized bar, literally made my showering ritual an almost sensual experience; redolent with the sultry tones of jasmine & offset by the brighter notes of bergamot, the steam only amplified the fragrance – love it! Once you begin working this soap, it lathers up extremely well, but not to the point that it’s overdone, and after rinsing, my skin felt clean as well as supple – none of that usual tight feeling you get with some other bars of soap.

Last word: With Mother’s Day around the corner, any (or all!) of the four scent pairings from L’Occitane’s Grasse Collection will make the perfect gift. While I haven’t tried every single product available, the 3 I’m showing here were each impressive in their own right; the Vanille & Narcisse Eau de Toilette not only went the distance in terms of lasting power, but even suited a die-hard floral hater like myself. The Jasmine & Narcisse Body Milk felt wonderful going on, and the scent stayed on way past when I thought it should have faded – a good alternative for anyone who prefers a more subtle version of a fragrance, while the soap not only cleans amazingly well, but also imparts its own soft fragrant touch.
