CHANEL Arabesque opener

CHANEL’s Arabesque Harmonie Lèvres (Limited Edition, CAN $75.00) released as part of the La Perle de CHANEL Collection, is a grouping of 5 complementary lip shades in one convenient compact. Inspired by the beauty of the ballet, these 5 rose-hued lip shades (2 glosses, 3 lipsticks) can be worn individually or mixed & matched to create plenty of interesting and personalized layering combinations.

Other items from La Perle de CHANEL Collection previously reviewed, include:

CHANEL Arabesque 3

Arabesque Harmonie Lèvres, Limited Edition | A selection of five lip shades in one palette, consisting of 2 glosses (the lightest hues) and 3 lipsticks. The compact bears a large mirror on the inner lid (convenient for on-the-go touch ups) and includes 2 dual-ended & slant-headed lip brushes that are surprisingly well made, enabling you to apply each shade with ease. Fragranced with CHANEL’s signature rose scent (relatively undetectable when applied) it’s still worth noting for those with sensitivities.

Both glosses are non-sticky in feel and come in a slightly thicker formula than what you’d typically find in the brand’s tube glosses, bearing CHANEL’s patented extra-fine shimmer that feels ultra-smooth upon the lips. With regards to staying power, the glosses wear typically about 2-3 hours on me and always leave my lips feeling well nourished. The three lipstick shades need a bit of work initially to build up the colour (most noticeable when the palette is new, not an issue with continued use) and are unique in that the colour seems to almost intensify once applied (or so it appears to me), becoming fully pigmented upon the lips and with a finish that is less than a gloss, but more than satin. I’m able to get between 5-6 hours wear out of the lipstick shades, with a light stain left behind on the lips once the majority of colour has worn off and a well hydrated sensation upon the lips throughout the wearing, as well as after the colour has faded.

  • Arabesque 1 – pale peach-tinted pink gloss with a ultra-fine silver shimmer (non-gritty)
  • Arabesque 2 – warm rose gloss with fine sparser silver shimmer (non-gritty)
  • Arabesque 3 – true rose-pink, warm leaning, pigmented, no shimmer, gloss/satin finish
  • Arabesque 4 – bright pink, cooler-leaning, pigmented, no shimmer, gloss/satin finish
  • Arabesque 5 – rosewood pink, both cool & warm leaning, ultra-fine shimmer (detectable more in the pan than on the lips), lighter pigmentation, gloss/satin finish

In the past, I’ve tended to pass on lip palettes for a variety of reasons, whether that was because not all shades drew me in, or the fact that they have the potential to become rather messy with use. That being said, there is something so lovely about Arabesque, that resisting its allure becomes pointless. Factor in that every shade is easily wearable by a wide variety of complexions and the excellent texture of each individual colour, and you have a winner. Another advantage to Arabesque, is in its versatility; rather than carrying around a bevy of lip products, these five hues can literally take you from day/work to evening with just a quick change-up. To round things off, there’s the numerous layering possibilities of these shades, where creating a unique customized lip colour is basically in the palm of your had.

I don’t own many lip palettes (apart from 1 from MAC, I actually own 3 from CHANEL that were released about 20 years ago – and they have surprisingly lasted rancid-free to now), and I confess to being skeptical about Arabesque at first – both in terms of usefulness and suitability. I’m so happy to to say that every shade I apply impresses me, both in terms of feel and how it appears against my skin tone. There’s something fresh and modern about these rose hues, and they add a gorgeous brightness to my completed makeup look (at least, the lipstick shades do – the glosses have their own unique brilliant beauty), while the layering possibilities make this one of the most versatile pieces you can own in your beauty arsenal. The only downside, is the steep price, although you might say that it’s offset by getting 5 totally wearable shades in 1 compact. Regardless, I’m absolutely loving these colours (and I never wear pink/rose hues, so that says it all).

Clarins | Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil 01 Honey

Clarins Lip Comfort Oil opener

Long associated with all things slimy (or salads), oil is now the beauty industry’s latest “it” ingredient, but Clarins knew way before the rest of the pack, how truly amazing certain oils can be; over 60 years ago, the brand’s first products were in fact, face and body oils. Launched with the recent Garden Escape Spring 2015 Collection (the eye shadow palette reviewed here) the latest addition to their already impressive line of beauty care, is the Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil (CAN $23.00), a triple threat balm/regenerator/gloss lip product. And it smells so yummy.

Don’t let the orange colour fool you; this lip oil most definitely applies clear. Made with nourishing oils such as Hazelnut, Mirabelle and organic Jojoba, the sponge-foot applicator is also unique in that it is much wider shaped than traditional gloss applicators & curved for ease of use. The downside to a wider applicator, however, is that it doesn’t come out of the opening as easily; you need to exert a touch more pressure – nothing major, but it should be noted that by doing so, you may just end up dropping some product along the way. In other words, don’t manhandle the process.

The texture is at once fluid, velvety, and buttery although the viscosity is thick enough to know you’re not wearing a gloss – but it sure shines like one. I personally love the honey scent (which seems almond candy-like to my nose) and while I’m not usually a fan of flavoured lip products, I don’t mind the slight sweet taste here either. With regards to lasting power, it’s about on par for a clear lip gloss-like product and I get approximately 2-3 hours of wear, although the nourishing feel it imparts to the lips last much longer than that. Another bonus, is that this lip oil can also be layered over lipstick/lip pencil, but I wouldn’t recommend contaminating the applicator like that.

Living in a climate that wreaks total CHAOS on the lips (and the incredibly cold Winter we’ve been experiencing this year, has taken things up a few notches in the dry/peeling/cracking lips department) I am constantly on the hunt for lip products to help give back what nature (and indoor heating) has taken away. This new Comfort Oil certainly delivers in that category, while making for that perfect swipe-and-go gloss … great for those days when you don’t want to bother with colour. With regards to long-term benefits, I can say that it won’t be replacing my current Holy Grail lip treatment product (which happens to be Vaseline’s Lip Therapy in Cocoa Butter) but it does an acceptable job just the same. My only issue, is that I find that about 30 minutes into the wearing, my lips actually start to feel a little tight around the edges – a quick press and the product gets redistributed, which goes a long way in eliminating that sensation.

The advantages to the Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil, are several; nourishing ingredients, instant shine and a feel-good scent/taste. Considering the CAN $23.00 price point, it’s also well within the reach of most budgets, especially when you factor in that it’s a department store brand. A lip saviour, it definitely isn’t for me, but I do like the feel upon initial application and enjoy the fact that my lips feel quite hydrated once it has worn off. I still think it’s worth looking into all the same, as we all respond differently to products and this might just be the ONE you’ve been looking for. Personally, I wish all lip products had this scent – bonus points for that.

Dior · Rouge Dior Brillant Bonheur, Victoire & Darling

Dior Rouge Dior Brillant opener

First introduced in 1981, the House of Dior reinvents their Rouge Brillant (CAN $39.00 available in 12 shades) – a high impact lip gloss – with a new innovative formula and incredible shine. More than just a gloss, each slim profile tube is banded by the brand’s iconic ‘Cannage’ pattern in silver, with a transparent reservoir that clearly displays each colour held within. According to Peter Phlips, Creative and Image Director for Dior makeup, each new Rouge Dior Brillant is also a ‘modern treatment for global beauty, a truly Elusional Liquid Balm, bringing lip care to the heart of your lips for radiant perfect colour’

Dior was kind enough to send me several Rouge Brillant shades to test out, and after playing around with them for just over a week now, I am impressed enough to want to add them all to my beauty collection. The formula is created with a blend of three highly refractive treatment oils that include Vitamin E for its antioxidant and regenerative properties, as well as a proprietary plumping ingredient that ‘reactivates collagen synthesis‘ to help your lips feel incredibly smooth and completely hydrated. The precision-tipped applicator has a well in the centre to hold the perfect amount of product per swipe, while the included ‘long-wear contour waxes’ provide colour definition, staying power and mega-watt shine. Each gloss is scented with Dior’s signature rose fragrance, although I don’t notice anything after application – still worth noting for those with sensitivities.

The texture of each gloss, is where this product displays how outstanding it is in the category; the feel is a total sensorial experience with its buttery and emollient consistency, while the deeper Rouge Brillant shades are intensely colour-saturated enough to enable you to achieve full coverage with one swipe. I experience minimal settling into lip lines (and my lips are quite deeply lined), with no pilling of the product along lip edges either (when it collects along either the inner rim of the lip or at the corners). The absolute perfect mix of colour, brilliant shine, and balm. I’m not sure about a plumping effect, although I do sense a slight tingling upon initial application which leads me to believe that some fullness probably does result, although that effect would be temporary at best.

Rouge Dior Brillant #468 Bonheur | A delicate light milky pink that leans warm against my skin tone, filled with an ultra-fine shimmer that never feels gritty upon the lips, but serves to add radiance instead. As my lips are quite lined, my high-res swatch photo below gives the illusion that #468 Bonheur emphasizes said lines, but the effect is quite the opposite seen in person. Finding a pale pink that doesn’t clash with the underlying yellow tone in in my skin, can be a challenge but I believe I can stop looking now. The shortest in staying power of the three (obviously due to the pale hue), I am still able to get a good 3 hours of wear (if you exclude eating & drinking from the equation), with my lips feeling fully nourished even after the colour fades.

FUN FACT: this pink shade was a favourite with M. Dior who believed that this colour “not only made women more beautiful, but happier”

Rouge Dior Brillant #808 Victoire | An apricot/coral shade filled with the same type of shimmer as the rest, with a deeper pigmentation than that of #468 Bonheur (although not as intense as #775 Darling), which can also be layered to some degree for a stronger tone. Definitely more of a warmer hue, #808 Victoire will also make a great shade for those with cooler complexions, as it doesn’t lean too orange. As far as longevity goes, I am able to get 5 hours of wear (less, if drinking/eating), with a light peachy stain left behind on the lips after the colour has faded.

FUN FACT: Victoire was M. Dior’s youngest fit-model and muse, and this colour is named for her, as well as inspired by her youth and ‘sassy elegance’.

Rouge Dior Brillant #775 Darling | An intensely colour-saturated and pigment-rich raspberry/fuchsia shade, that provides full overage from the first swipe. In the same format as the rest (with regards to shimmer and texture), #775 Darling is hands-down the longest wearing of the three, and leaves a deep rose stain on the lips after the majority of colour/shine has faded. The coolest-leaning of the group, there are slight warmer hints in the shimmer that enable this shade to be worn by all skin tones with ease, and is the perfect pop of colour to pair with a simple black liner. Lasting power is impressive, and I’m able to easily get about 6 hours of wear, although I do experience a tiny bit of bleeding into surrounding lip lines after eating (adding a matching lip liner beforehand could help with this issue).

FUN FACT: This shade draws inspiration from an evening dress of the same colour that was created by M. Dior for the Spring/Summer 1948 Fashion Collection, embodying the spirit of ‘seductiveness and couture elegance’.

I received one more shade, #999 a classic red in true Dior style and that I will be showing in an upcoming post (spoiler: it’s totally gorgeous and you’ll want it – even if you never wear red lip shades). Don’t get me wrong; I love lipstick and the elegance that seems to be a part of the application ritual (there’s something to be said for taking the time to enjoy makeup, as opposed to just wearing it), but gloss is just so much easier, especially when you’re on the go. The new Rouge Dior Brillant glosses have upped the ante in the lipgloss game, by creating a product that feels as good as it looks. Did I mention that they’re also all layerable over lipstick? Not that you’ll want to, as they’re just so luscious on their own.

MAKE UP FOR EVER | Give In To Me Collection

MUFE Give In To Me opener

Beauty giant MAKE UP FOR EVER has released four makeup kits inspired by the film Fifty Shades of Grey, that opens up in theatres today. Love or hate the novel (I personally laughed my way through it), there’s no such ambivalence about the makeup, in particular the Give In To Me Alluring Color for Eyes & Lips set shown here today (CAN $90.00). The collection includes a customized eye shadow palette featuring four cult-favourite Artist Shadows, lipstick, lipgloss, mascara, and new Graphic Liner – all in a reusable soft case which bears a large mirror on the inner lid, a ‘secret compartment’, as well as a booklet that allows you to recreate 3 iconic looks from the movie, as created by Victoria Down, Head of Makeup Department for the Fifty Shades of Grey film.

The Graphic Liner shown below was previously reviewed in full here, so I won’t go into detail in this post.

At the end of the post, I have also included the instruction sheets for the 3 looks (Natural, Sultry, and Empowered) created by Vitoria Down for the Anastasia Steele character (portrayed by Dakota Johnson), all of which can be reproduced with the products of this collection.

MAKE UP FOR EVER | Give In To Me 4 Artist Shadow Palette

MUFE Give In To Me palette macro

If you haven’t had a chance to try out MAKE UP FOR EVER’s range of recently launched Artist Shadows (300 shades available, at last count) then you are seriously missing out on what has got to be some of the best eye shadows available in the market. Made with the highest levels of pigment compared to every other brand, they come in 5 different finishes (S = Satiny, I= Iridescent, D= Diamond, M= Matte and ME-Metallic), can be applied either dry or damp, are long lasting, super blendable, and display a buttery/velvety texture.

The four shades of the Give In To Me Palette (breakdown below) are all in highly wearable colours that you can tweak for either an easy daytime look, or ramped up for evening.

  • I-514 – described as ‘pink ivory’, I see this as more of a champagne hue
  • S-556 – described as ‘taupe grey’, this shade is the most matte of the four
  • ME-612 – described as ‘brown silver’, reads more warm copper to me
  • I-628 – described as ‘reptile’ (which is perfect), this complex hue has mossy undertones

MUFE Give In To Me Smoky Extravagant mascara brush

MAKE UP FOR EVER | Give In To Me Smoky Extravagant Mascara

This is the latest mascara to be released from MAKE UP FOR EVER (also available in a waterproof version), and is meant to provide ‘dramatic impact & graphic precision’, with the aid of its ‘ergo-conic’ brush head and intense formula.

It’s definitely one of the deepest black mascara shades I’ve tried and even by the first coat, I notice that my lashes look plumped up, longer, and fuller. A second coat gives serious drama and almost makes lashes look fake – very impressive. What I find, however, is that I have better success applying this to my upper lashes; I usually end up smearing the product on the outer corners of my lower lashes, possibly due to the width of the brush head. The formula also has a tendency to clump slightly (contrary to the ‘clump-free’ claim), but I personally don’t have an issue with that (clumps can also add to the appearance of volume, and basically disappear against eye makeup anyway) and it’s also nothing that a quick lash combing can’t solve (a habit I’ve only lately gotten into doing, and can’t believe what a difference it makes to my finished lash look). Staying power is impressive, smudge and flake-free, and looking just as fresh at the end of a day’s wearing as it did from the start.

MUFE Give In To Me Rouge Artist Natural

MAKE UP FOR EVER | Give In To Me Rouge Artist Natural N4 Lipstick

MUFE Give In To Me Rouge Artist Natural macro

Rouge Artist Natural N4 Lipstick | The description of ‘Pink Beige’ is spot on, although it definitely leans more warm than cool. Available in a range of 50 shades, the Rouge Artist Natural formula is ultra creamy and nourishing, enriched with a ‘cocktail of vegetal ingredients, made of waxes and Cupuassu Butter’ to hydrate your lips with a natural sheen‘.

The texture is unbelievable silky and literally glides along the lips without any tugging or pulling. Considering the creamy consistency, I am pleasantly surprised to find how well pigmented N4 is, while still managing to offer full coverage. Staying power is yet another surprise, lasting about 4-5 hours without any fading (eating and drinking will definitely drop that number, however). Suitable for a variety of skin tones across the board, except for darker complexions where this shade might just prove almost invisible.

MUFE Give In To Me Lab Shine Lip Gloss

MAKE UP FOR EVER | Give In To Me Lab Shine Lip Gloss D-14

MUFE Give In To Me Lab Shine Lip Gloss macro

Lab Shine Lip Gloss D-14 | Available in 3 finishes (D=Diamond Collection, S=Star Collection, M=Metallic Collection) and 35 creative colours, these glosses are designed to achieve an ‘ultra-bright effect, with the silky brush ensuring an optimal and dazzling coverage‘.

This shade from the Diamond Collection, has sheer coverage for a more natural effect and filled with sparkling shimmer (of the non-gritty variety). The feel is at once lush and lightweight, as well as non-sticky throughout the wearing. Worn alone on my lips (which are rather pigmented naturally to begin with), it appears as a clear gloss with a whisper of a rosy undertone, with the shimmer more visible when seen in bright light/sunlight. Lasting power is about what you’d expect with a gloss and perhaps a touch longer than usual (approx. 3.5 hours), leaving lips quite nourished and hydrated long after it has worn off.

Pairing the lip gloss and lipstick of this collection together, yields a significantly more lush appearance than wearing either lip product alone – and they seem to perfectly compliment each other.

Yves Saint Laurent Beauté | Volupté Tint-In-Oil

YSL Tint In Oil opener

A few weeks ago, I was invited to take part in the YSL x Google Glass experience (you can read about it here) and while that in itself was pretty amazing, for a beauty aficionado like myself, seeing the YSL Spring 2015 Collection up close and personal, was an even bigger thrill. The latest innovation from YSL Beauté and the first of its kind in the beauty world, is Volupté Tint-In-Oil (CAN $35.00, available in 8 shades), a unique new lip oil that is infused with tint that provides all the nourishing benefits of a balm, but with the beautifying effects of colour.

Housed in sleek chrome tubes belted with the YSL ‘Cassandre’ logo (this band also displays the colour of each individual shade for your convenience), the contents are kept cocooned away from light in order to preserve their integrity. The ‘bouche à bouche’ diamond-shaped & angled applicator with its soft texture and mini-reservoir at the centre, has been designed to help dispense a perfect hit of product in one simple swipe, almost making it intuitive in terms of application ease – no mirror required. Adding to the sensorial experience, is a delicious mango scent (although it reminds me more of watermelon candies), which is so uplifting mood-wise.

According to the brand, there are two facets to this unique new formula:

COLOUR LINK INF– USER

Although oil and tint naturally repel each other, YSL Beauté has conceived of a way for opposites to attract – compelling these two ingredients to work effectively as one. COLOUR LINK INF– USER is an ultra-stabilizing technology developed by YSL Beauté for its ability to disperse and homogeneously solubilize colour particles in oil to create a hybrid formula. The colour pigments are captured within the oils to dispense an ever-evolving burst of liquid lip colour. The oils slowly disappear but the pop of colour stays true.

5 PRECIOUS OILS

Apricot Kernel Oil, Macadamia Seed Oil, Coriander Fruit Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil, Passion Flower Oil

The precious Passion Flower has been well-documented as having invaluable nutritive properties. Historically cultivated in the Majorelle Garden in Morocco (a place so dear to M. Yves saint Laurent’s heart and one of his prime sources of inspiration), this flower blooms only in daylight and fades by nightfall, waiting for the energizing light of the sun to come again.

Another interesting feature of the Volupté Tint-In-Oil, is the ‘bitten-lips/stain’ effect they leave behind, a colour that will be unique to each and every user. The colour tint that is parcelled within the oils, awakens on contact with the lips and then proceeds to interact the the lip tone, in effect creating one’s own bespoke colour finish. The tint itself evolves with the wearing, becoming more vibrant minutes after initial application, enhancing your lips with a natural glow.

YSL Tint In Oil applicators

From start to finish, it’s LOVE; to begin with, the packaging is über-elegant and just begs to be taken out in public. The applicator truly is goof-proof and as the Tint-In-Oil formula is not colour saturated, you really don’t need a mirror for application (as well, the tint of each shade does not stain surrounding skin, in the event you ‘colour outside the lines’, so to speak). The magic begins immediately upon application, starting with a rich nourishing sensation of the oil upon the lips, a feeling that’s neither oily, too slick, or sticky – just ultra comfortable and hydrating, and one that seems to fill in lip lines as well (my lips are quite lined, and I was amazed to see how diminished said lines appear). Within a few minutes, you can see and feel a few other changes; there’s a slight tingling I sense which is not unpleasant for me (anyone with sensitivities, should definitely test these out at a counter first) and then the colour begins intensifying. Lasting power is on par for a gloss (I get between 2.5 – 3.5 hours), although that is also affected by food, drink, etc. and even when the glossiness has faded, I am still left with a slight stain on my lips (intensity of stain will vary with each individual shade), along with a completely hydrated feel.

N°2 Oh So Gold – the lightest of the 3 shown, warm-leaning with a light apricot tint and iridescent gold shimmer (non-gritty)

N°4 I Rose You – carnation pink, perfect mix of cool & warm undertones making it wearable by a broad range of skintones, iridescent pink shimmer

N°5 Cherry My Chérie – lush true pink, the most intense of the 3, leaves behind a hint of shimmer along with tint upon the lips. According to my press sheet, this is the ‘Star Shade’ of this collection, iridescent pink shimmer

Volupté Tint-In-Oil is ultra-comfortable with a soothing feeling on the lips. It’s more like a liquid lip balm than a gloss or a stain. It creates volume and erases texture on the lips with a beautiful shine.

It’s great for people who might be afraid of colour, as it’s super natural. Balms, glosses and stains generally tend to achieve only one effect rather than several effects together. Volupté Tint-In-Oil perfectly combines colour, shine, and absolute comfort”

Mark my words, you’re going to start seeing all brands – from luxury to mass market – begin releasing their own version of YSL Beauté’s Volupté Tint-In-Oil, although I sincerely doubt anyone can match the utter gorgeousness seen here. In general, I enjoy the convenience of using lipgloss, but reapplication is a chore and more often than not, my lips wind up feeling parched after it’s worn off. That being said, I experience none of these issues with any of these Tint-In-Oil shades, although N°2 Oh So Gold only left a mere whisper of a stain to my lips – perfect for fans of a more natural looking mouth. As pink lip shades fall out of my comfort zone, I was stunned by how much I loved the look of N°5 Cherry My Cherie; both upon application, and again with the stain it left behind – reminded me of the way my lips would look after devouring a pink PopSicle. Come to think of it, one reason I used to love those treats, was exactly because of the way they stained my lips – early signs of a budding beauty fiend, perhaps?

How perfect are these for Valentine’s Day? Even the applicator seems to be in on the theme!

Available now at Sephora, Sephora.ca and The Bay stores throughout Canada.
