NYFW Nail Edition | OPI covers BCBGMAXAZRIA SS/15

OPI-BCBGss15-2

Heralding the start of the fashion season, Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is currently presenting designers’ Spring/Summer 2015 collections (we haven’t even felt Winter’s first touch of cold and they’re already showing Spring/Summer … sigh), with nails once again playing as important and cohesive a role in the overall theme of each collection, as hair and makeup do.

Kicking off the shows at Lincoln Center for BCBGMAXAZRIA, lead nail artist, Miss Pop, created a softly neutral look using OPI’s Base Coat followed by 2 coats of Bubble Bath – the brand’s bestselling soft pink shade – and finished it off with 1 coat of OPI Top Coat. This sheer neutral look was in line with and complimented the collection’s bohemian silhouettes, mutes pastel floral pieces, and earthy tones.

CHANEL | Le Vernis Secret, Atmosphère & Orage – Collection États Poétiques Fall 2014

CHANEL Fall 2014 polishes opener

CHANEL has released three new nail lacquers with their Fall 2014 États Poétiques Collection, #625 Secret – a nude crème, #629 Atmosphère – a pearly duo chrome, and #631 Orage – a dusty navy. I absolutely love Fall launches (the cosmetics, not the fact that the weather’s cooling) and look forward to wearing deeper and more jewel-like tones, but I also appreciate how these 3 new CHANEL shades will work beautifully throughout the entire year – versatile, as well as gorgeous.

CHANEL #625 Secret swatch

#625 Secret (CAN $27.00) | A nude crème hue with a combination of pale pink & light beige/mauve undertones (will suit both cool and warm skin tones), in a formula that bears jelly-like properties: self-levelling, plush finish and ultra glossy. Managing to be both crisp/clean looking as well as diffused, this is a modern yet totally feminine shade with no hints of chalkiness whatsoever. On shorter nails, 2 coats will give good coverage, while longer nails may need a 3rd layer for complete opacity. Biggest surprise? How much I absolutely LOVE the way this shade looks on me – not to mention how easy it is to apply. Coats: 3 (thin), plus top coat

With 1 coat of #629 Atmosphère layered on top, it gives a unique iridescence to #625 Secret – at times grey-tinged, at others golden, but always with a pink shimmery glow in the middle. So hard to capture in photos, but a truly gorgeous combination.

CHANEL #629 Atmosphere swatch

#629 Atmosphère (CAN $27.00) | A semi-sheer pearly grey base hue with violet/pink, gold and more random green prismatic colour shifts – although the pink/violet colour flashes the most dominant. A steady hand is needed here to avoid any visible brush strokes, which does tend to level out somewhat on its own just the same. For a subtle look, this shade can be worn alone (1 coat gives decent coverage, 2 coats intensifies the duo chrome effect and adds to the opacity) and depending on your preferences, anywhere from 2-3 coats should do but layering #629 Atmosphère over any other shade is best for bringing out its multi-dimensional beauty. Coats: 2, plus top coat

CHANEL #631 Orage swatch

#631 Orage (CAN $27.00) | A dusty navy blue with strong charcoal grey undertones with CHANEL’s ‘secret’ shimmer (mainly visible in sunlight), in a jelly-esque formula: self levelling, cushiony look, and super glossy at the finish. The first coat lays down slightly sheer, but becomes totally opaque by the 2nd layer and even though the shimmer is ultra-fine and all but invisible in deeper light, it still serves to add an overall lustrous depth of tone. BONUS: non staining upon removal. Coats: 2, plus top coat

One coat of #629 Atmosphère layered over #631 Orage, does all kinds of crazy wonderful things, with too many colour shifts to count: pink, green, gold, amber, grey, as well as unique gradient effects seen under certain lighting.

While all three shades are new releases from CHANEL, nothing I’ve come across lists them as limited edition so I’ll assume they’re to become permanent (if anyone has other information on that, let me know). Of the three, I absolutely adore #625 Secret – mainly for how beautifully this nude works against my skin tone, but for the formula as well, and #631 Orage because I find near-black shades like this very sexy. There’s no denying #629 Atmosphère is pretty to look at, but I find that it didn’t impress me as much and therefore not a must-have … unless you’re a CHANEL collector like me (damn this addiction).

I can never get enough of this type of vivid blue, and even though several other brands have released their own versions (Bleu Majorelle from YSL, Butler Please from Essie, IKB:2012 from Rescue Beauty come to mind), I’m very happy to add NYFW to my collection as this shade does not disappoint on any level: formula, application and finish. Tre fact that there are no staining issues – something commonly found with blue pigments – is another huge bonus for me and then there’s the fragrance factor: all Cirque Color shades have essential oils of Lavender and Rosemary included for their beneficial properties. Basically, your nails will smell as good as they look … doesn’t get better than that.

Yves Saint Laurent Beauté | La Lacque Couture #52 Bleu Galuchat & #53 Taupe Grainé (LE)

YSL Bleu Galuchat & Taupe Grainé opener

Perfectly on point with the whole sensually organic theme of this collection (see my previous review here), the two new (and limited edition) shades of the Yves Saint Laurent Cuirs Fétiches Collection for Fall 2014 manage to be at once classic (the colours) and edgy (the finish). Textured polish is something that’s been around for quite some time now, but what you’ll find here with #52 Bleu Galuchat and #53 Taupe Grainé is chic and luxurious, with just the right amount of roughness added to the mix to bring out your inner RiRi.

A point most people don’t often stop to consider when dealing this variety of lacquer, are the options: you can wear them as intended to highlight their multi-dimensional effect, or simply add a top coat for an entirely new look. Personally, I adore the “leather look” and what I couldn’t adequately capture in my photos (you have no idea how hard it is to accurately photograph every nuance of these beauties), is the final look – definitely pebbled looking, but in an ultra-fine way and yet there seems to be little glints of something you catch every now and then, especially when seen in direct sunlight (shy shimmer, I tell you). The new wide, yet tapered & chiselled brush of YSL lacquers, makes application a breeze – even for those with small nail beds, while removal works the same as with regular polish.

NOTE: Both #52 Bleu Galuchat & #53 Taupe Grainé apply like regular polish – the textured effect takes a few minutes to fully develop, staying still relatively shiny at first and then toning down to a satin/matte finish once fully dry, revealing the completed leather grain look.

YSL #52 Bleu Galuchat

#52 Bleu Galuchat, limited edition (CAN $27.00) | A deep rich teal with fine – albeit sparse blue shimmer throughout – in a textured finish that completely resembles the finest grain leather and which comes to a satin/matte finish. Highly pigmented even with by the first coat as well as bearing an excellent flow, this lacquer stays exactly where applied, without pooling along cuticles or nail edges. When top coat is added to #52 Bleu Galuchat, it brings out the shimmer but I personally feel it detracts from the sensually brooding vibe of this shade (see the photo above of Cara wearing it, to understand what I mean). NOTE: To avoid any possibility of staining, I doubled up on base coat first. Coats applied: 2, top coat only for last swatch

YSL #53 Taupe Grainé

#53 Taupe Grainé, limited edition (CAN $27.00) | In some lights, this shade appears to be a mink brown, while at others it comes off as a silvery taupe – probably due to the ultra fine silvery & prismatic shimmer it holds in the base. Bearing the same leather-look textured finish as #52 Bleu Galuchat, there is excellent flow and pigmentation to #53 Taupe Grainé as well, while the finish appears slightly more satin than matte here – probably due to its complex shimmer. BONUS: Non-staining upon removal. To change up the look, you always have the option of applying top coat, but just keep in mind that you may need at least 2 layers for a smooth finish (this finish eats up top coat). Coats applied: 2, top coat added only for last swatch.

Textured polish won’t appeal to everyone, but what I love about both #52 Bleu Galuchat and #53 Taupe Grainé, is not only their classic (yet still-so-chic) colours, but how cohesive they are with the rest of the YSL Fall 2014 Collection. As Lloyd Simmonds, Creative Director for YSL Beauté says, “nails can be fashion’s most sophisticated accessory” but these shades are also sexy, a little bit naughty, and biker tough – definitely in the best way possible, of course. Textured polishes have inspired strong feelings with people – you either love them or hate them, but you can’t deny how cool these two shades are. Just take a look at Cara in the photo … again.

Dior 5 Couleurs Collection Fall 2014 | Bar trio

Dior Bar trio opener new

In 1947, M. Dior created quite a stir in the world of fashion with the introduction of a unique silhouette: the legendary ‘Bar Ensemble‘, a tailored and minimalistic yet still quite feminine tone, dubbed the “New Look“. The newly released Bar Trio from the 5 Couleurs Collection for Fall 2014 (see my previews reviews on the other trios here, here and here), pays homage to that look in shades of grey, black and beige – all working in harmony yet with enough dark touches to keep things modern and edgy.

Dior legendary Bar Ensemble – New Look (1947)

Dior #317 Bar new

Rouge Dior #317 Bar (CAN $36.00) | A pinky nude lipstick hue made totally unique by grey/lavender undertones and a fine silvery sheen in the über-hydrating Rouge Dior format. Finding the right neutral lipstick shade to suit my skin tone can be a daunting task as most can pull either too flat or ashy on me, but something about the combination of colours here just works; I’ll even go out on a limb and say that #317 Bar may very well be my most favourite nude lipstick shade to wear. EVER. Any settling into lip lines is minimal at best (keep in mind that as my photos are high resolution, they magnify EVERYTHING) and wear time was about average for a shade as light as this, about 4-5 hours before reapplying (no mirror needed for that either – another plus), leaving my lips feeling super nourished long after all traces of colour had gone.

Dior #056 Bar palette

5 Couleurs #056 Bar (CAN $61.00) | The most neutral leaning of the 5 eye shadow palettes released with this new collection, #056 Bar has quickly become my go-to range of shades for every day. A breakdown of the colours, starting clockwise from the upper left:

  • silky taupe with grey undertones (slightly cool leaning) and superb pigmentation
  • cool white frosty hue with light silvery reflects, well pigmented and non-chalky
  • soft mauve (warm leaning) with a light pink duo chrome-like sheen, satin formula with excellent pigmentation
  • matte soft black, great pigmentation and excellent blendability
  • cool baby pink in a frosted formula, least pigmented of the 5, pink tone more apparent when applied damp

As a taupe fiend, I couldn’t be happier to see 2 versions in this palette – and both quite different one from the other. Some matte black shades can appear quite flat and light-absorbing, but the one in this grouping seems to defy that principle with its unique velvety softness and the easy manner with which it can be blended – or taken to a new level of dark by applying it with a dampened brush. The pale pink shade when applied dry seems like a slightly different version of white against my skin tone, but on the eye it appears to reveal more colour – especially when juxtaposed beside the others (which goes to prove that arm swatches are not always a good indicator of how a particular colour will appear on the lids), but it still bears the least amount of pigmentation (unless applied with a damp brush) making it an excellent highlight hue (inner eye corners or under brow bone). Apart from the 2 palest hues, I experienced no powdery residue or kickback when swirling my brush through the shades and regardless of pigmentation levels, they all blended beautifully.

One of the main advantages offered by the #056 Bar palette, is the total wearability of these shades and how well they should compliment basically all skin tones across the spectrum. Another plus is how travel-friendly this palette is, small enough to take up little room in your makeup case and with plenty of look options offered by the 5 shades.

Dior #902 Bar nail polish

Dior Vernis #902 Bar (CAN $26.00) | An obsidian black hue with Dior’s secret shimmer that adds a unique overall depth (not very overt but still visible to the naked eye), in a plush jelly-like formal. Self-levelling and with a mirror-like shine at the finish, #902 Bar is a decadent black shade that appears almost velvety soft (sounds odd, but that’s what the final look reminds me of) and has enough cool & warm tones to suit all skin tones. Bonus: non-staining upon removal (provided base coat is applied first). Coats applied: 2, plus top coat

In case it wasn’t made clear in my breakdowns above, I am absolutely in LOVE with all three items of the Bar Trio. I’ll keep it short: for all who love neutral eyeshadow shades, then the #056 Bar palette is definitely worth looking into. For lips, don’t be fooled by the cool gleam of #317 Bar; there is some sorcery at work here, as this shade seems to work on all. As for nails, #902 Bar is an obvious urban yet sensual hue, made even more distinctive when seen in contrast to lighter makeup. So much for keeping it short – just goes to show you that this trio is a total hit … at least for me. prescription
