NARS | Nail Polish 2014, reformulated
NARS introduces their newly reformulated and revamped nail polish collection – 42 shades in all (CAN $23.00 each), with 19 new colours included in the lineup. For years now, the nail lacquers of this brand have flown under most peoples’ radar, overshadowed by the sometimes overwhelming releases of both mass-market and other high end labels. That being said, there have been several NARS shades launched in the past that have almost inspired a frenzy, such as the iconic Zulu (reviewed here), a drop-dead gorgeous deep emerald jellyesque shade, and totally deserving of its by-now legendary cult status (which reminds me to wear it again … soon).
This new formula is said to have polymers that both lengthen wear time (helping it stay chip free), as well as add a brilliant glossy finish. The other changes include a new removable outer square cap which reveals a smaller ridged inner cap (a feature that is much appreciated, as the former cap was a little too bulky to comfortably hold), and a wide & flatter brush with a shorter wand – another improvement over the longer wand of the past, that had significantly thinner and floppier bristles. Even though there is much to recommend the new range, there are also a few points you should be aware of.
To start with and from the shades I was sent to test, I can honestly say that the formula on each was consistently easy to apply, self-levelling, and ending with a ridiculously glossy shine. The issue lies with a few of the more pigmented shades, and their potential staining factor – something that can be greatly reduced by simply doubling up on your base coat first, and thus making even these troublesome beauties worth wearing.
The brush, while significantly improved over the earlier version, can still use some tweaking; the flat wide shape means a quicker application in fewer swipes, which is great for eliminating any potential brushstrokes, and there is a perfect balance of rigidity & flexibility to the new bristles that should ensure a super smooth application, but as it is rather wider than usual, those with narrow and/or small nail beds may find it challenging to use. One way around that, is by turning the brush on its side and therefore exposing less of the brush’s width to the surface of your nail. Another tip is to ensure you don’t load up too much product on the brush, and then start your application by placing the slightly rounded tip near (but not touching) the cuticle area of your nail, followed by quickly pulling it downwards while applying very little pressure – this will keep the bristles from splaying out too much and will help prevent any polish from running down the sides into the surrounding skin.

La Notte | (Holt Renfrew exclusive) Inky navy hue with strong purple undertones in the base (that being said, the purple colour doesn’t translate that visibly upon the nail, but adds a lush depth), in a pigment-rich crème/jelly hybrid formula – can almost be a 1-coater. NOTE: this shade can be quite staining, so doubling up on base coat first is an absolute MUST. Coats applied: 2, no top coat
*One of my nails broke right after I swatched La Notte (insert major swearing here), which is why the other swatches are shown on my NOW much shorter nails.
NARS | La Notte
Ithaque | A seashell pink in a crème/jelly hybrid formula, that bears a medium thick flow. While not overly opaque, Ithaque still applies with decent overall coverage and while a third coat can always be added, I prefer it looking slightly translucent (think: sea glass). Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
NOTE: Ithaka, Greece, for which this shade is named, is an island in the Ionian Sea on the western coast of Greece, facing Italy (my Greek pride is showing – couldn’t resist this little nugget of information!) buy actos online andnewbloonline.com/actos.html no prescription
NARS | Ithaque
Zakynthos | A nude crème hue with pink tints in the base, and quite possibly my most favourite neutral/nude shade ever as of right now. The formula is superb: creamy and incredibly even, with good opacity from the very first layer. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
NOTE: Zakynthos, Greece, is another island in the Ionian Sea and slightly more south that Ithaka, on Greece’s western coast which faces Italy, and beyond spectacular. Known for its amazing beaches such as Navagio Beach (pictured below), this is a place that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

NARS | Zakynthos
Obscura | (Holt Renfrew Exclusive) A shadowy dusky purple with grey undertones (gives it that ‘murky’ factor) in a crème formula with intense colour saturation – this can literally be a 1-coater with ease. BONUS: non-staining upon removal. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
NARS | Obscura
Fearless | An electric orchid/fuchsia shade with slight blueish undertones, in an über-glossy and jelly-like formula that nonetheless applies with excellent coverage (no translucency, as most jellies are prone to). BONUS: non-staining upon removal. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
NARS | Fearless
Dovima | A unique red that can look both cool and warm leaning; some angles show it to be more tomato red (warm), while others bring out a cooler maraschino cherry red tone. A highly colour saturated crème formula, but as there is a good possibility of staining, do double up on base coat first. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
NARS | Dovima
Jungle Red | A slightly translucent ruby hue with blueish undertones (which by default makes this shade more cooler-leaning), in a crème-jelly hybrid formula that is so lushly pigmented, it can be a 1-coater. Once again, doubling up on base coat first can help avoid any light staining issues. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
NARS | Jungle Red
Overall, all the shades shown here have something to recommend them – from the jewel-like tones of the deeper hues, the super glossy finish each one bears, to the ease of application on every single one. From this grouping, I was originally drawn the strongest to La Notte (me & my brooding colours), and while I think it’s an absolutely stunning navy, I can’t help but be a little disappointed at how strongly it stains – won’t stop me from wearing it again with extra base, I’ll tell you that. Zakynthos was a surprise as well, as nude shades can be tricky against my skin tone, but there’s the right mix of warm & cool tones here to make it a universally flattering shade. I’ll be showing a few more shades in an upcoming post, but do yourself a favour and check out this re-launch: it will be incredibly difficult to choose just one.

Nicole by OPI | Seize the Summer Collection 2014 (Limited Edition)
The latest capsule collection recently launched from Nicole by OPI, is called Seize the Summer, four limited edition lacquers in vivid, flirty, fun hues – and all perfectly curated to capture the essence of Summer.
Now as those of you who follow me probably already know, I consider myself something of a “colour purist” and that my nail art skills are pretty basic at best, but I just couldn’t help but let some creativity loose with these four beauties – it somehow seemed effortless.
Nicole by OPI | Seize the Summer Collection
Lay it on the Lime – An almost retina-searing lime green hue with strong yellow undertones, in a crème formula that applies exceptionally easily: self-levelling, no pooling at the cuticles, and with a high gloss shine at the finish. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
Nicole by OPI | Lay it on the Lime
The Coral of the Story – A sizzling coral crème hue with pink undertones, in a formula that defines perfection: flow, opacity, and über-glossy at the finish. While this shade teeters on the edge of neon, it doesn’t quite cross over into that territory. Please note that as there could be some staining potential, do NOT skip base coat. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
Nicole by OPI | The Coral of the Story
Leapink for Joy – A Barbie pink crème hue that’s neither too cool nor warm leaning, and which should suit a wide variety of skin tones. One of the most wearable pink shades I’ve come across in a while – especially considering that it’s quite electric-appearing. Another winning formula and with a super glossy finish. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
Nicole by OPI | Leapink for Joy
Shaved Nice – Ultra fine silver & confetti glitter, filled with small white hexagonal pieces, along with medium-sized copper, purple & green hexagonal pieces. There’s a pretty decent opacity reached with 2 coats – especially on short nails, and while the finish bears a light grit feel and winds up semi-matte, there’s a strong reflective brilliance nonetheless. Coats applied: 3 (thin), no top coat buy arava online andnewonlineblo.com/arava.html no prescription
TIP: To eliminate the need for a difficult removal, I strongly recommend applying OPI’s Glitter Off Base Coat first.

Maybe it’s in reaction to the hard Winter we just had, but I find myself strangely drawn to both neon and glitter polishes this year – they just make me smile. With colours as bold as the 3 crèmes of this collection, my personal preference is to wear them as pedi shades, although I’ll make an exception for The Coral of the Story – total love! A glitter bomb like Shaved Nice is taken to a whole other level with its uniquely textured finish and given a rather sophisticated turn at that, while retaining all of its eye-catching properties. Just remember, as with Summer, this collection won’t be around forever – better jump all over these while you can. buy antabuse online andnewonlineblo.com/antabuse.html no prescription

Essie Bridal 2014 Collection
In honour of wedding season, Essie has once again released a small and beautifully curated little collection, Bridal 2014. Consisting of 4 delicate hues, this soft grouping may not be outrageous colour-wise, but is absolutely spot-on for those who want understated elegance.
Essie Bridal 2014 Collection
Essie Bridal 2014 Collection
She Said Yes – A semi sheer off-white hue with ultra fine silver shimmer, that somehow manages to stay visible even in low lighting. This shade may need 3 coats to reach full opacity, but it’s absolutely worth it for the gorgeous and super glossy finish it provides. One of few white colours that will NOT look stark upon the nails – LOVE! Coats applied: 3 (thin), plus top coat
Essie Bridal 2014 – She Said Yes
Got Engaged – A dusty ballet-slipper pink with what looks like finely ground silver and baby pink shimmer. The formula is semi-sheer upon first application, but manages to offer slightly more opacity that She Said Yes. Self-levelling and ending with a high-gloss shine, this particular shade of pink will suit both warm and cool skin tones equally. Coats applied: 3 (thin), plus top coat
Essie Bridal 2014 – Got Engaged
Meet the Parents – (All I can think of with this name, is Ben Stiller/Robert DeNiro …!) A muted baby blue with greyish undertones, in a jellyesque formula. Application is ridiculously easy – self-levelling, a plush cushiony look, and ending with a super-high glossy shine. I so totally love this! Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
Essie Bridal 2014 – Meet the Parents
Love Every Minute – A true (but slightly warm-leaning) pink hue in a similar jelly-like formula as that of Meet the Parents. For those with pale skin tones, this will definitely appear to have coralish undertones and thus look much darker worn, but still wearable just the same. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
Essie Bridal 2014 – Love Every Minute
The word to best describe this collection, is: demure. Interestingly enough, I am quite drawn to all 4 of these shades – perhaps because it’s nice to see classic hues for the occasion (or maybe I’m just old-fashioned that way shrugs). None of these shades scream original, but then again, sometimes understated speaks much louder. What works for me personally, is that these are some of the easiest to apply pastels I’ve come across – and all so very wearable. My favourites here, are without a doubt She Said Yes (absolutely perfect for a white-lover such as myself) and Meet the Parents for being so blue & squishy … a gorgeous and fun shade!

Butter London | Lolly Brights Summer 2014
Butter London introduces 6 vibrant shades for Summer 2014, the Lolly Brights Collection, consisting of 4 glass-flecked shimmery hues and 2 crèmes. Known as much for their incredible formula as well as their provocatively-named lacquers, this grouping has “hot” written all over it, although I can see at least 3 of these shades transitioning beautifully into the cooler months ahead — just not yet.
All swatches done with Butter London’s Patent-Gel Top & Tails base and top coat system.

Butter London | Chuffed – Tangerine base with gold and orange glass-flecked shimmer. Excellent flow, opacity and pigmentation, that ends in a brilliant (but not glossy) shine – like a citrus burst along the nails! Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
Butter London | Stroppy – Violet base with magenta and purple glass-flecked shimmer, bearing blue undertones that gives off a slight duo chrome effect. Another easy to apply polish with the bonus of being non-staining upon removal. LOVE. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat

With their superb formulas and vivid – yet totally wearable – colours, the Lolly Brights Collection is sure to bring a smile to your face. The intricate shimmery tone of the first 4 shades, is absolutely hypnotic, especially when viewed in direct sunlight. The crèmes are not unique colour-wise, but their amazing application makes them standouts just the same. All in all, this entire collection says ‘Summer is here’ – and that’s all I want to know.

MAC – Submerged Nail Lacquer (LE), Alluring Aquatic Collection Summer 2014
There is just that extra special something about the MAC Summer collections, that I happen to personally look forward to all year; it could be partly due to the fact that I am myself a Summer baby, but it’s more like the brand puts their most creative thinking into this one particular seasonal launch. This year’s version, Alluring Aquatic Summer 2014, is no exception to that and if anything, I can truthfully say that MAC exceeded even my high expectations. Starting from the theme – water – the product exteriors (raised water droplets on turquoise packaging. TURQUOISE), to the colours themselves, I was powerless to resist picking up several items … powerless, I tell you.
Sadly, this collection is pretty much sold out online, but you can still find several items at certain stores … if you’re willing to do a little hunting.

MAC Submerged Nail Lacquer – Alluring Aquatic Collection Summer 2014
Submerged Nail Lacquer (CAN $21.00) – Of the 3 nail lacquers released with this collection, the only one that spoke to me was Submerged, an aqua/teal multi chrome polish with colour shifts of royal blue, violet, and lavender. The consistency is incredibly easy flowing and leaves no visible brush strokes, falling in a self-levelling way and leaving behind a brilliant finish. Interestingly enough, the first coat appeared somewhat thin but becomes completely opaque by the second coat, sort of optical illusion-like. In shaded/darker light, the primary shade is teal – which is gorgeous in its own right, but it’s in sunlight that you can clearly see the rainbow flashes. BONUS: non-staining upon removal. Coats applied: 2, plus top coat
Can we also take a minute to admire the raised water droplets on the aqua metallic cap? Have you EVER seen anything so fabulous?!

Ordinarily, I’d have a hard time shelling out CAN $21.00 for a MAC polish, but I did so without a trace of hesitation for Submerged – and with zero regrets, at that. In all likelihood, I already own several lacquers that undoubtedly come close to this shade (I haven’t gone comparison hunting yet, but I intend to), which also means that if you missed out on this lovely, you may still be able to duplicate it with other brands. Still, if you happen to cross paths with any pieces from this collection, you’d be well advised to jump all over them. Just saying.
