Skyfall … a movie & a mani
I usually prefer to watch movies from the comfort of my couch and have no problem with waiting for them to be released onto BluRay, but I will always make an exception for James … Bond, that is. When I announced on my twitter and Instagram feed that I was thinking of perhaps wearing a ‘Skyfall’ inspired mani to attend the movie (TODAY! SO EXCITED!), my brain started churning out ideas.
Now, if you’ve been following me for any length of time, you’ll know that I’m not really into nail art as far as my lacquer preferences are concerned, as I am a “colour purist” at heart; however I really do admire all the talented people out there who create some truly wondrous nail art. While my skills in that field are rather limited, every now & then I like to break out of my comfort zone and try something new. It doesn’t always work out, but sometimes I surprise myself (pleasantly) with the results.
The Criteria: a Skyfall-inspired look, using shades from OPI’s latest Skyfall Collection (you can read my previous posts here and here)
The Inspiration: since I always wanted to be a Bond Girl (as well as a mermaid; a Bond Mermaid would be my ultimate dream role), I let the enigmatic beauty of Bond Girl, Sévérine (french actress Bérénice Lim Marlohe) be my guide for this creation.
The Look: the deep maroon walls in the photo of fig. 1 (see below) reminded me of OPI’s ‘Skyfall’ – probably my favourite shade from the entire 12-piece collection – and the delicate jet beading on her dress brought ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ to mind, which led me to combining the two shades.
My ‘Skyfall’ mani:
- I started by cutting a couple of strips from a new latex makeup sponge along with a small square of foil – them set them aside
- beginning with base coat, I then applied 2 coats of ‘Skyfall’ and let that dry completely
- I then placed a large drop of ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ onto the foil and dipped one end of the sponge strip into the polish
- working one nail at a time, I then applied the sponged colour onto my nail tip in a stamping motion, gently fading it as I moved up towards the cuticle line, avoiding most of the top area
- I let that dry completely for a couple of minutes, then applied top coat
- … and done!

Final thoughts: As I stated above, I’m not one for intricate nail art but something as relatively simple to do like the mani I’ve created here, is right up my alley. I’m so pleased with the result; ‘Skyfall’s’ creamy & vampy hue was the perfect backdrop for the edgy & dangerous shot provided by ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ – I love it when things tie in together like this, and even if no one else at the theatre today will know the significance behind it, you all will … and that makes me happy!

… and in case you’re wondering, this mani will definitely be gracing my nails as I watch the movie today!

OPI – ‘The Bondettes’ Mini Nail Lacquers (Skyfall Collection)
In conjunction with Skyfall, the latest Bond movie which officially premieres today, OPI has also released ‘The Bondettes’ – mini sized versions of 4 of the shades from their 12-piece ‘Skyfall Collection’ (see my earlier reviews here and here). These little beauties might be small in size, but pack major impact – plus, aren’t they the cutest?!
The Bondettes
The Bondettes (back label)
The 4 shades that make up ‘The Bondettes’ quartet, are an absolute perfect homage to Skyfall’s exotic Bond-girl, Severine: mysterious, alluring, seductive, and a little bit dangerous (yes, nail polish CAN be all that!). While the brush is appropriately sized to the amount of lacquer provided, I had no application issues – but that could also be because of the fabulous formula of each shade. The following swatches are from my original posts using the larger versions, and are with base and top coats.

Final thoughts: One thing that I love about OPI’s mini collections, is that you have the opportunity to indulge in shades from a collection, without committing to the cost of 4 full-sized bottles. Let’s face it; how often do any of us ever finish a bottle of nail polish? These minis may appear to barely hold enough lacquer, (3.75 ml – 1/8 fl.oz vs 15 ml – 0.5 fl. oz) but you would actually be surprised at how many applications each one offers – plus, you could always then invest in a full-sized version of the one that turns out to be your favourite. With Christmas and the holidays around the corner, there’s another reason to give ‘The Bondettes’ a look: these little sets would make the perfect stocking stuffer for any lacquer-lovers on your list … if you could bear to part with them, that is!

All Hallows’ Eve 2012 …
I’m not one for complicated nail art, but every now & then I like to try my hand at something outside of the box — at least as far as my tastes run. In honour of the pagan holiday “All Hallows’ Eve” which we all know & celebrate today as “hallowe’en”, I once again turned to a shade from one of my most beloved brands, a-england’s ‘Lancelot’ (previously reviewed here) – a shade that straddles the line between deepest onyx and blood red, accompanied by ‘Goldeneye’ from OPI’s ‘Skyfall Holiday Collection’ (previously reviewed here) – the most brilliantly luxurious gold. All swatches are with base & top coats.
The look:
- once the base coat was dry, I applied 3 thin layers of ‘Goldeneye’ over the entire nail, waiting approximately 2 minutes between coats to avoid any dragging
- making sure to leave enough of a border around the nail to show the base colour, I then carefully applied 1 coat of ‘Lancelot’ down the center of the nail
- a final layer of top coat sealed everything in and served to amplify its already intense shine
I am so happy with the way this turned out, with the deeply burnished gold of ‘Goldeneye’ under ‘Lancelot’ almost making it seem to pulsate like a beating heart – an unexpected thrill, and one that made the entire look that much more seasonally appropriate – in every sense of the word!

Final thoughts: I’ve stated often enough that I’m a “colour purist” and tend to lean towards dark hues, although I confess to being so attracted to shiny things as well – a contradiction, but one I can’t deny. My inspiration for this look was drawn from antique Venetian masks: luxurious, mysterious, and darkly seductive, and to that end I wanted to try and recreate that feel with nail lacquer – I absolutely love how it turned out! Now if I only had a masquerade ball to attend …
Happy All Hallows’ Eve!

OPI – Skyfall Collection Magnetic Lacquers (swatches & review)
Along with the 12 stunning shades of the ‘Skyfall Collection’ (previously reviewed here – part 1 & part 2), as well as ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ 18K Real Gold Top Coat (previously reviewed here), OPI has a few more “007” goodies to throw our way. For their first foray into magnetic lacquers, the brand launches 3 new shades inspired by Skyfall, the newest Bond movie coming to theatres this November 9th, each with their own unique magnetic pattern … thanks to these innovative little gizmos, we can all now create some big-screen magic of our own!
Boasting rich colour and interesting visual textures, the 3 new OPI Magnetic Lacquer shades are also fabulous stand-alone hues. Two of them (‘Is That Silva?’ and ‘Morning, Moneypenny’) are also filled with multi-dimensional holographic particles that rise to the surface quite prominently when the magnet is applied; the last shade (‘Bond, James Bond’) has an underlying patina of old gold – very luxurious and enhanced by its interesting magnetic pattern. All swatches are with base and top coats.
According to the insert provided with each combo – and as with other magnetic varnishes – the best way to achieve each magnet’s effect is to work one nail at a time. What I found works best:
- begin with base coat
- add one layer of magnetic lacquer on all nails
- beginning with the pinkie, apply a second layer of the magnetic
- with the ‘magnetizer’ resting on a flat surface – pattern side visible – place your finger inside & rest it solidly on the bottom surface
- ensure that the little indentation found on the top inner surface of the ‘magnetizer’ falls just above your nail & rests on the cuticle
- be careful to not let the inner surface of the ‘magnetizer’ actually touch the surface of your nail (I made sure I kept my finger pressed down)
- the instructions say to hold it in place for 5-6 seconds; I kept it down between 12-15 seconds and found the pattern was more clearly defined
- carefully open ‘magnetizer’, remove finger and … voilà! Instant nail art!
TIP: After some experimentation, I found that a thicker layer of the magnetic lacquer helps the pattern emerge in a more pronounced manner.

Is That Silva? – steely silver-grey hue dusted with incredibly fine prismatic glitter. The formula was of a medium thick density, but flows quite easily upon application. Self-levelling, hardly any visible brush strokes and finishes with a beautiful natural gloss. Absolutely no difficulty with removal.
After using the ‘magnetizer’, the pattern that emerged was surprisingly vivid, with the stripes appearing more like tungsten steel against a gunmetal-silvery base – all sprinkled with a light overlay of the holographic glitter.

Bond, James Bond – golden/pewter base hue willed with ultra-fine antique gold and bronze shimmer particles. The formula here was the thinnest of the 3, but still flowed amazingly well, totally self levelling and leaving behind a fairly shiny finish (although not as glossy as the other 2).
After using the ‘magnetizer’, the snakeskin-like pattern that emerged was a stunning surprise, with the deep golden tones standing out in sharp relief against a lighter silver/grey base. Even the shimmer seemed to be more emphasized – LOVE!

Morning, Moneypenny – dusty plum/burgundy hue filled with ultra-fine prismatic glitter, similar to ‘Is That Silva?’ in that respect as well as the formula (medium thick density). This shade appears slightly deeper and more muted when worn alone, with hints of purple in the base as well. Beautiful natural gloss to accompany its self-levelling application.

After using the ‘magnetizer’, I was in for a surprise; I expected the pattern to be simple horizontal lines across the nail (as the image on the ‘magnetizer’ appears to be). What emerged instead was a lattice-work of wavy lines, with the rich berry tones of the base shade showing up distinctly against a purple-plum background. It looks like an “X” to me (marking the spot?)

Final thoughts: I totally LOVE these! Everything I wanted previous magnetic polishes to have – a visible & clearly discernible pattern – but didn’t (see my previous posts on the nails inc. versions here and here), these OPI beauties have IN ABUNDANCE, along with being ridiculously easy and quick to use – always a nice bonus. I also appreciate the versatility of these magnetic shades, as they look absolutely beautiful even on their own, but with the magnet applied, you really get to appreciate all the hidden nuances found deep within each one. Ready for your Bond-girl moment?!

OPI – ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ Real 18K Gold Top Coat (swatches & review)
Celebrating 50 years of James Bond, would not be the same without a gun – or in this case, a golden gun. Accompanying the 12 fabulous shades of ‘The Skyfall Collection’ (part 1 & part 2), OPI has created ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ – a totally decadent top coat made with real flecks of 18K gold. With its opaque and brilliant gold collectible bottle that comes housed in a black silk-screened box, this top coat kisses your nails with gilded luxury – Marie Antoinette would have so killed for this beauty!

The Man with the Golden Gun – irregularly shaped genuine 18K gold flakes in a clear base. Not designed to be opaque, this top coat instead imparts a unique new “luxe” dimension to either bare nails or when layered over another shade. With an excellent flow to the formula, the golden flakes each appear incredibly rich and vibrant, and I was surprised to find that the finished look was quite glossy and smooth to the touch when dry. Adding a layer of clear top coat not only seals everything in, but seems to bring out each brilliant facet of the flakes. Bonus: relatively easy removal. Coats applied: 3
Technique: I found that using a dabbing motion to apply this top coat, as opposed to straight on brushing, will ensure that the golden flakes are more evenly distributed across the nail.

I decided to layer ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ over ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’, but opted to concentrate the flakes along the top (cuticle) portion of the nail for a different effect. I have to say that this look reminded me of rich golden trim on fabric – very regal. Coats applied: 1 (over 2 coats of the base shade)

For the second version, I layered ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ over ‘Live and Let Die’, this time covering the entire nail. The deeply burnished hue of the gold flakes is so beautifully set off by the deep pine green of the base shade, while the emerald micro glitter seems to just glow. Once again, a complex & rich combination. Coats applied: 1 (over 2 coats of the base shade)

Final thoughts: Having just scratched the surface of what I can do with this top coat, I must confess that there’s a part of me that hesitates to try any other combinations – mainly because of the cost involved. With an accompanying price tag of CDN $37.50 (slightly less in the US), you want to make sure that whatever look you come up with will be one that you’ll want to keep on your nails for as long as you can; no sense in wasting something this precious, right? Still, as far as effects top coats go, this beauty is not only easy to work with, but the smoothly-flowing formula and amount of flakes per brush stroke, means you can apply this as subtly as you wish, with multiple layers easily added for more luxe & drama. Released in time for the movie and in conjunction with OPI’s ‘Skyfall Collection’ for holiday 2012, this is a limited edition item – and one that gives new meaning to being “worth its weight in gold”!
