Celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee with Butter London’s ‘Lillibet’s Jubilee’ !

On June 2, 1953, Great Britain celebrated a coronation, and a young woman – Princess Elizabeth, took on the mantle of Queen. June 2, 2012, marks the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, celebrating 60 years of her reign – an admirable accomplishment in today’s modern world! Here in Canada, we have always kept our special ties to the monarchy, holding the title of the largest land mass of the Commonwealth, and I clearly recall having to sing “God Save the Queen” after the Canadian anthem every morning during my grade school years – as a matter of fact, I still remember the words!

First there was the dainty yet modern ‘No More Waity, Katie’ (previously reviewed here) in honour of Kate Middleton’s engagement to Prince William, and now in honour of Queen Elizabeth’s 60th year of reign, Butter London has created ‘Lillibet’s Jubilee’ – a lacquer more than worthy of this distinction. Interestingly enough, while the colour purple has long been associated with royalty, Butter London has given this hue an urban spin by not only lightening it up several degrees, but with the unique mirror-like finish of the lacquer itself.

‘Lillibet’s Jubilee’ is a brilliant silver/lavender foil-like metallic shade, in an absolutely STELLAR formula that has an excellent flow & viscosity. At times a shimmering silver, a moodier grey, or an ombré violet, one coat is actually enough to provide full and opaque coverage, although I personally prefer 2 coats, as I applied on all the swatches here. The delicately textured finish not only adds depth and visual interest to what could otherwise be a rather one-dimensional hue, but also helps to camouflage any potential visible brush strokes – not that I really noticed any. Other favourable factors here are the self-levelling application and the high shine natural gleam at the finish, with the bonus being how quickly this varnish dries to the touch. Removal was effortless and quick, leaving no sparkly residue behind – hate souvenirs like that!

Interesting note: the addition of slight colour (lavender) to the base shade (silver), gives this lacquer such movement, as it seems to morph with the changing light, even managing to show all of its varying degrees in a gradient format at times – it’s like mood polish! Love this!

Final thoughts: There’s a good reason why Butter London products have such a cult following; not only is their cruelty/toxin-free formula amazing and the shades released spot-on trend, but the names are quite irresistible – not to mention the rather bawdy slang thrown in at times which keeps us all guessing! ‘Lillibet’s Jubilee’ is one of those shades that could easily have come off as looking like “old-lady-hair-rinse-mauve”, but the highly reflective base shade has instead given it a more futuristic bent and kept it vibrant. This shade almost pulses with life, possibly because of the interesting colour mix, and I love how the finish isn’t glass-flat, making application so much more forgiving, especially for a foil/metallic finish.
