CHANEL – #297 Sweet Beige Glossimer fall 2012 (swatches & review)

It’s worth repeating: CHANEL’s fall 2012 collection is one great product after another; not so much because of any exotic or über-unique bent, but by being so, well … normal. The colours all blend harmoniously together and form a totally wearable fall palate – but there’s still enough of a fresh new twist to keep everything look modern … never dull & boring. After all, this is CHANEL we’re talking about here, right?

#297 Sweet Beige Glossimer is another universally nude lip shade from this collection, but what makes this hue completely different from ‘#68 Troublant’ (previously reviewed here) is that it definitely falls several degrees lighter in tone, as well as the formulation – which is more of a true gloss, and therefore a touch thicker. The colour falls somewhere between a beige and nude, with an interesting mix of both greyish and peachy undertones to add both warmth & a slight coolness overall. As with other CHANEL Glossimers, you will also note the addition of pink, gold and sparse silver ultra finely-ground shimmer throughout, which give it some extra zing of sparkle, but feels perfectly smooth on the lips.

I like how the tube is clear and you can see the product itself and how much of it is available, and I find the wand at an easy to use length with the spongy doe-foot applicator being of a good size to quickly apply & spread the gloss along the lips. You should note that the first 3-4 uses yields a much scanter amount of product on the wand head, and I find this type of gloss needs to almost be “worked in” before you see flowing results – not an issue, but something to be aware of.

For a colour this light, I was surprised at how well it covered, and while definitely not a highly pigmented shade, it nonetheless provides very good opacity. The initial shine is absolutely stunning, looking almost glass-like, and the feel on the lips is very comfortable, never sticky or gummy. The wear time is slightly less than you’d get with a darker colour – you’re looking at about 2 1/2 hours at best. One thing I’ve noticed with all my Glossimers, however, is that as they fade, they leave behind a well hydrated feeling and a moist-looking sheen on the lips – no flaking at all.

Final thoughts: Everyone needs an easy-to-wear neutral shade in their lip gloss arsenal, and even though this CHANEL version may fall on the pricier side of things (US $29.50), it is well worth it for the quality and overall look/longevity of this neutral hue. Another plus is how a shade like this not only transcends the seasons – thereby making this colour very timeless & chic, but will serve as the perfect counterpoint if you’re planning on deeper or more dramatic makeup for the rest of your face and/or nails. In other words, this is a true workhorse, although I doubt CHANEL would want it described that way!
