When it comes to CHANEL, it doesn’t take much to grab my attention. Learning that a new blue lacquer was on its way, along with 2 new Illusion d’Ombre shades – again, in blue – and I began compiling my wish list. Naturally, the ‘Bleu Illusion de CHANEL’ collection would be limited (what a shocker) and while it would eventually be available for purchase on CHANEL’s website, us Canadians wouldn’t be able to go that route as the brand doesn’t ship to Canada or take Canadian credit cards. But as they say, patience is a virtue and some 9 months after I first learned of these beauties, I was finally able to get my hands on them. Breathing a sigh of relief now….
When the big fashion houses put on their shows, they are always spectacular, but some of the most fantastical, unique, and original themes have to go hands down, to the venerable house of CHANEL. The Spring 2012 show was no exception. The theme was “runway”, as in airplane runway, and to that end a specially-designed jumbo jet setting was created, with the invited guests seated to the left & right of the actual runway the models used – totally brilliant!

Final thoughts: Of course, a totally blue-themed cosmetic collection can be either hit or miss; being a long-time fan of the CHANEL brand however, I felt pretty confident that they would find a way to get it right. The concept behind this entire show was absolutely mind-blowing, and I found that all the looks were feminine without being over-the-top, while managing to be totally wearable. The makeup looks created for the show were at once ethereal and powerful — not an easy feat to accomplish when using blue; too much and you wind up looking like an 80’s reject, too little and you channel early 70’s flower children. I also had some concerns about the new varnish, ‘Sky Line’, especially since I had heard that it was somewhat “frosty” looking, but the collector in me doesn’t really dwell on details like that … not for too long, at any rate!
